Thanks so much, I managed to buy a 1 TB Steam Deck OLED a few days ago, being in awe of it over TH-cam since its release and I hadn't had much time to set it up at all as yet. This video is precisely what I'd searched for on TH-cam for help - 'subscribed 👍 .
Great lil beginners crash coarse. Just got my deck about a week ago and it's reassuring knowing that ive been hugging all the right settings. Just got done setting up decky for plugins and customization and cryoutilities for performance tweaks. Great content man and well presented. Liked and followed.
Glad you enjoyed it! I did this one a while ago and honestly never thought it would be as popular as it is. Happy to see that people are still getting value out of it.
Great tips & suggestions. Being more on the lazy side, I locked my Deck at 40 fps and have had no issues or disappointments, but I may have to try playing with the single game settings a bit. I did get the 64gb model and just installed a 1tb SSD this weekend (TIP: Find the Sabrient videos on TH-cam for the best explanation of the process - both on the hardware and software sides), so now that I have the storage capacity, I am exploring non-Steam launchers and emulation. Always more to learn and videos like yours help increase my knowledge - Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed the video. I just did the 1TB upgrade using Sabrent as well. Easy upgrade and got it for $109 US which was great! I have a couple more videos planned out for more about plugins, launchers, and more settings so stay tuned!
2 more tips. If you hold down the steam or access button, it will show you the shortcuts and you can use either to use shortcuts. So if you hold down the access button, you can use the left stick to control the brightness.
Thanks for this video, got the new oled steam deck and cant wait too play it, i seen you had god of war and uncharted. Do you know if i will be able too play them games at 60fps plus? And thank you
Helpful for a newbie, thanks. I'm curious, what is the game you are playing at 4:10 ? I just got the Deck here in Australia, cost me a pretty penny but I love it. Currently playing Hogwarts on the Deck with the NReal Air's, they are a pefect marriage.
It should. Are you’d docked? That’s the probably the reason. Also, I know that if you are in family view you will lose visibility into some of these options. Not sure if that is your issue or not.
Great video! Just a question, I don’t actually have a Steam Deck (yet) but wanted to get one for a younger sibling - just wondering if there’s a way to completely block access to fiddling with wifi controls at all? Maybe with a pin? All of the games are going to be downloaded so no wifi access needed - is this possible? Thanks in advance
Quick question but will my performance be affected because of a low disk message? I’m asking this because I’ve noticed at least 3 games that are now performing pretty crappy whereas before they were running great. I did start up by holding volume + and power button and changed 1GB to 4GB I’m a major noob to anything PC and I’m really frustrated. Also is there a way to test the fan?
I’ve not had issues with games because of low disk space but in general “they” say you should have around 40-50GB reserved. On my legion I’ve got like 10 GB left and I’m not experiencing any issues. The vram change you made can cause issues with some games. I’d suggest reverting it back to 1GB and booting the game again. I know red dead redemption 2 for sure can have performance issues if you change it from 1 to 4GB vram.
No it’s not. I should have replaced the footage in hindsight. I was having issues with my computer not the steam deck. It’s resolved now and I don’t have any issues with frame rate now when streaming.
I have an question I just purchased the steam deck oled 512 GB and was told that getting an 512 GB ssd mini for extra storage is it possible to add another card into the deck or it can only hold one at an time?
You have the single internal 2230 SSD that’s the 512GB. There is also the option to expand your storage by buying microSD cards. I personally like the Samsung EVO or Samsung Pro microSD cards they work really well. You can also upgrade your internal 512GB SSD by buying and installing up to a 2TB SSD to replace it. It’s really simple to do and ifixit has a great tutorial. Hope this helps you.
Are you docked? I’ve only seen this while docked and using an external monitor or using Family View which does hide some of the QAM settings. Hope this helps!
i got my steam deck recently and I already installed distrobox, multiple emulators, pirated games, and neofetch. it's beautiful. shame sleeping dogs doesnt work on it but atleast I can play undertale and paint the town red free of cost
sleeping dogs definitive edition was marked as playable on february 1st. it was labeled “unsupported” before that for some reason. lots of people have played it on steam deck since the deck was released
Good question! I believe it’s still blocked unless you install windows on your steam deck. I’ll have to try it with remote play but my assumption is it’s the same.
I typically don’t turn the refresh rate down below 45-50. My comment is in the wrong spot I was trying to comment on frame rate. I’ve never seen the need to go below 30.
This is SUCH a great video for people new to the Deck such as myself. Wow, very helpful! So, seeing as this video is 8 months or so old, is there any new info or any changes since then that would apply to the new Oled models?
Thanks for the kind words. Honestly not sure on the new OLED model as I don’t have it yet. Vibrant deck shouldn’t be necessary but other than that most should still be beneficial on both LCD or OLED.
Not sure if yours is overheating but definitely play around with the performance settings. It all really depends on what game your trying to play. Lots of good content on Reddit for settings best for specific games.
I dont know why people don't informed that when you adjust your frame rate to below 60 fps using frame rate limiter, you would get screen refresh (quick flash of black screen) every time you navigate between the game and the steam game mode lobby. it can get annoying. If you stick to 60fps, you will get smooth transition when multitasking.
@@StewdioGamer Hahahaha im sorry if i ruined it. To check them out, after adjusted your frame rate to 40, open any game. Then when game running, click on the steam button and click home, you will see flashes of black screen. Then go back to game, it flashes black screen. Super annoying.
Use the SteamGridDB plugin from decky loader. I have a video on plug-ins check it out. Once you have it just scroll to the game you want to change click on menu and there should be an option to change the artwork.
I wish I'd seen this before I got mine (last week). 1st game I played was the outer worlds. I assumed the steam deck would automatically apply the settings... Oops!! Beautiful game. Smooth as butter right up till my 1sy battle with multiple enemies. I heard a nasty digital scream in my ears and the screen froze. I shit a brick!! All good though. Just let it cool down then checked reddit for settings.
You can do it but you’ll notice a drop in performance. I wouldn’t recommend going below 10 TDP for that game. I’ve been able to play it at 8 with min refresh rate of 40 and hover around 30 FPS. Gets a little choppy at times though.
I bought the deck a year ago Endless updates turned me off Thanks to you I am excited about trying the steam deck again This video is super useful to the end user I give you 5/5 stars Thank you tech Stewart
So if you don't have a PC and steam account like me can you still get an steam deck and plays games??? How does steam work? I'm console guy I don't know nothing about PC gaming
Of course. You can create an account and buy/download games through Steam. Steam has a library of games verified and compatible to work with steam deck. There are also ways to use Xbox game pass and PlayStation plus on steam deck. Emulation is also a route you could go if you wanted to.
Thanks for calling that out! Yes the refresh rate minimum is 40. I was actually trying to comment on frame rate it’s just in the wrong place on my script.
Just got my Deck and this is EXACTLY the type of content I was looking for. Really informative, and looking forward to more Deck videos! 👀

My kid just got a steam deck and I'm crazy jelly and can't wait to get my own! Great tips here, I'll pass them along, thanks!
