  • Hartley is a 15-month-old black bear yearling. He’s residing in a Wild Enclosure at Appalachian Bear Rescue until he’s big enough to return to the wild. Today, Hartley went for a swim! Black bears are excellent swimmers.
Hartley shares the Wild Enclosure with two female yearlings; Sweetie and Daffodil. Black bears lead a mostly solitary life and are protective of their turf. Hartley and Sweetie have “words”, establishing boundaries. Black bears avoid physical confrontation when possible, so there’s a lot of bluff and bluster. In the end, Sweetie holds her ground.
We post updates on our eight resident bears twice daily on our Facebook page and once daily on the weekend. Please click on the link below. / appalachianbearrescue
Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR), founded in 1996, is located just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Townsend, Tennessee. It is a rehabilitation center for orphaned and injured black bear cubs, two years of age or younger, with the goal to release them back to the wild as soon as possible.

He's come a long way from that pathetic, hairless, sad cub. He's beautiful and LOVES the cubby pool. Thanks to all who have worked so hard to save him. He thrives because of you ABR & the great vets at UT.

Love the posturing, you’d think they were a couple of black bears or something. Thanks for giving them a good home and the opportunity to live like bears naturally do.
