Can you talk about elder brain dragons? They were suspiciously introduced just before BG3 was announced and would make for a perfect boss game in this game, both thematically as well as in terms of difficulty. They are basically stronger elder brains that are mobile, instead of being stuck to just one place. I really think there is a very high probability that this will either be the final boss related to the mind flayers, or at least one of the last fights in the game
I played the Throne of Bhaal bonus content 20 years ago and it was playing out all the parts of the Dark Urge Quest line most notably stealing the crown from Mephistopheles with Gortosh but everything that is illuded to in the Dark Urge questline the story had been written decades ago
fun trivia, some mindflayers go "vegan" eating a species of sentient moss, its not satisfying for them as the moss is incredibly undeveloped and stupid, but, it works.
It would be cool if the Githzerai made an appearance in BG3 to see the philosophical differences between them and the Githyanki - especially from Lae'zel's perspective
4:42 - I always had to me the name ceremorphosis implied that the tadpole dissolved inside the skull and its cells started to dpread through the organism, changing ithe body. And the BG3 tadpoles have a Netherese magic cast on them that preserve their integrity, hence they don't dissolve and start ceremorphosis, and can even leave the host body without dying.
You know, we can blame the illithids for most of the worst problems Toril has. All those aberrations they made with their mad science. Astarion in the thumbnail is always a good move ;)
I always enjoy Races like the Mind Flayers, having your body violated is always a great way to make players feel disgusted and make you fear encountering them. I can't wait to see what other horrors await in BG3.
Despite being from separate universes, the Illithid single handedly justify the xenophobia of 40K's Imperium of Man. Faerun needs some Astartes 'love'.
One of my absolute-ly fav creations of D&D lore. Lovecraft inspired, This is top Tier fantasy for me. This Video went Deep into the lore. It will give us all advantage on Intelligence checks in our understanding of one of the greatest monsters in Fantasy!
I want to see an elder brain in BG3 full release but it would also be really cool if the main villain and final boss was some representation of the god of mind flayers. That would be soooooooo cool. :D
Hey Wolf, I'm really enjoying the Forgotten Realms lore videos. My first experience into the Forgotten Realms was reading the Icewind Dale Trilogy. I've been hooked ever since. I've lost count of how many Forgotten Realms novels I've read. I have also read several Dragonlance novels and although I loved the trilogy with Raistlin, Tanis, Flint, etc; I keep coming back to the Forgotten Realms. Keep up these interesting lore videos and good luck with your meniscus repair surgery. I had one a few years ago, it's not that bad and you should recover quickly.
I love ilithid! I'd really like a mindflayer path in the story. Embracing your ilithic power and becoming more than who you were and what you should have become. Becoming a new being that can rival a mother brain but retaining some sense og humanity to use your ilithic powers to influnces the realm as you see fit.... probably not! But imagen!

Another well done lore video to satisfy our appetite. Good luck with the knee surgery. I had the same done over 20 yrs ago. I had to use crutches for a week or 2. You'll do just fine.
Great video, Wolf! What a strange, fascinating world we'll be gaming in! Good luck with your surgery, I just spent a couple days in the hospital myself, never a fun time. I hope your recovery is quick and you're 100% in no time.

I have a question about BG3 which is related to the mindflayers. I'm asking this question because I neither played bg1 and 2 nor have a deep knowledge of d&d. It seems like, at the adamantine forge of underdark, there was a time of union against something. A union even including the forces of hell and their magma, Shar, Elune and all others seems like worked together for the forge. But against what? Mindflayers? And what were they forging?
OK so there are a number of adamantine forges in the realms so there is no single "Adamantine Forge of the Underdark" as a thing in Realms lore. Are you referring to The Grymforge? So since I'm not sure what you're referring to some interesting lore around the history of adamantine... Adamantine (an alloy of the fictional ore adamant) was first forged by the dwarves, with the first recorded adamantine constructions being around -8700 DR., though this is an adamntine gate on a large dwarven city so it's assumable that they were using it long before then. The drow, forced into the Underdark around -10,000 DR (during the 4th Crown Wars) later learned of the forging of adamantine from the dwarves (pretty sure it wasn't a friendly exchange of knowledge) and developed their own variation on it, with the first recorded use around -8100 DR. There is no recorded history of dwarves working willingly with drow around forging adamantine, with all indications being that the dwarves started forging much more adamantine after the arrival of the drow possibly directly due to drow incursions into dwarven mines. The Mind Flayer city of Oryndoll was founded around -11000 DR so mind flayer civilization in the Underdark would seem to pre-date the use of adamantine and the drow descent into the Underdark by a significant margin.
@@jarrodbright5231 yes I'm referring to the Grymforge. Thanks for the answer. Seems like a classic dwarf innovation drama. I wonder if there is a way to forge souls into the items with things like soul coins? Kind of like the Daedric items of the Elder Scrolls lore.
@@f.jideament So as far as I can tell the Grymforge was a completely new thing for Baldur's Gate 3. Not much light to shed on that from having played BG1 and 2 or from Realms lore.
Soooo, this mind flayer of 1:47 went to the future and watched Pirates of the Caribbean? Or maybe more likely good ol' Davy Jones was a mind flayer wannabee? Other than that, Illithids were always 1 of the scariest races for me, giving off these Lovecraft vibes...
Can ceremorphosis be reversed? Edit: I've looked into it, and it seems possible (if the DM allows it) at very high level with spells like Clone, or a ring that keeps your soul alive if you die, that sort of thing. So it most likely won't be possible in BG3, but it was fun to look into. :)
That quote from the intro is definitely supposed to be "warm and moist", not "warm and most"... it was just copied and pasted so many times from the source that typed it incorrectly, that it appears almost everywhere as "warm and most."
So I do understand the whole time limit per video thing but how can you discuss the Mind Flayers and mention the Mind Flayer god without mentioning the former Netherese wannabe-God who decided to turn himself into an Elder Brain as a stepping stone on his desire to become all-powerful? Surely Ioaulaum the Oracle of Ellyn'Taal has to be one of the Forgotten Realms figures with the most matches for Baldur's Gate 3 specific keywords?
As a fully grown gnome, I'd probably still let them turn me into one. It's still cute. I want to see what it looks like to mind zap ⚡ TARDIS as a wee 🐙 squidee And to freak Carli out... Although she would probably still chase me around. So nevermind that.
