  • Testing out the MPC One as a brain of the hardware dawless setup. Thought about using it mainly as a sequencer but it’s just impossible to ignore all the other features it has! The MPC is well known for its powerful sampling and sample manipulation engine but how about the bundled synths and effects? Well, I must say it’s awesome for that also! So, besides using it as a sequencer, I explored the sample playback and some of the virtual synths and effect plugins. I used plenty of effects for the samples and virtual synths, mainly delays and reverbs.
    Breaking down this setup, here’s how it’s comprised:
    For main drums I used the TR-8s sequenced by the MPC. I divided all the TR-8s drums into 4 MIDI tracks on the MPC. One for kick, another for mid percussions (snare, toms, rims, etc.), another for main hats and the last track for secondary high percussions, such as shakers. This way I can easily mute each of these groups with the MPC. If I want to control each individual drum I can just use the faders on the TR, like I do during the intro and outro.
    For bass I used the TD-3 running through one of the Zoom CDR pedals for some chorus. The Model D plays the main lead and it is also processed by a Zoom CDR pedal with a kinda complex effects chain (compressor, EQ, delay and reverb). For secondary lead, which plays the same notes as the Model D, I used the Hype synth. There is also another virtual synth playing, which is the Odyssey. For the pad sound I used the Hydrasynth with it’s internal FX engine. All the 5 synths have their own MIDI tracks in the MPC so it is possible to mute them easily. I also used another three tracks for some supplementary sounds. First two for top drums (one clip/loop track and one drum pad track) and the third for FX samples. The FX samples were heavily processed adding some high feedback delays and long tail reverbs. The full track was divided into 4 MPC sequences which were triggered manually when I considered appropriate. Regarding routing, all the hardware synths are mixed together with a small mixer and sent to the MPC. The MPC runs into the external mix input on the TR which has a sidechain effect applied to it, triggered by the kick. The TR is outputting two stereo signals, one containing all the TR drums and another everything that is coming from the MPC. These two stereo signals are mixed with an old analog DJ mixer.
    Hope you like it! Please listen with headphones for better experience! 🙂

    how did you use mpc, only as a sequencer, and wanting a sampler? I'm studying my dawless setup but I opted to keep Maschine + as a groove box and mpc I'm selling it, as a pure sequencer I'm waiting for torso t1, hydrasynth also present in my setup, together with prophet rev 2 and moog grandmother, analog rytm mk2 and analog four mk2, I'm waiting for lemondrop or tasty chips gr1 and dreadbox typhon,

      I use my MPC One as a sequencer, sample player and I also use it’s internal synths for some sounds. I also run some of my hardware synths through it for some effects. So I guess I’m taking advantage of lots of its features. It is a solid machine!

    Great jam.. have to say that's refreshingly not the usual sounds of a mod d. very nice .. those CDR are still one of the best budget stereo effect available altho I wish they had a sync of some sort . also I have to say if you don't already have it the paid synth bundle for the MPC it is astonishing I am tight as f@#k but bought it when in offer.. best thing I bought last year. Anyway we'll done 👏👏

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thanks! 🙏🏻 I’m very happy you liked it! I don’t usually use my synths in different ways as I very often stick to the basics and straightforward sound design, but this time I wanted to use the Model D more as a lead synth rather than bass synth. The CDRs are amazing for their price but as you say, no MIDI sync and no MIDI control. I’m planning to get a used Zoia. I already tried it and it’s pretty powerful! You can make two patches and use them simultaneously to process two different instruments, so it’s like having two pedals in one! I recorded a small jam recently, you can check it out on this channel. And regarding the MPC, I’m aware of the paid stuff but for now I already have lots of things to play with. So I’ll stick to what I have for now, hehe

    Without much knowledge I've acquired a MPC One, Hydra Explorer, TR8s and a borrowed Poly D. Looking to buy a UMC1820 to hook them up to the MPC since that is the most inputs for price I can get at the moment. Will that setup be able to split drum tracks and hook everything up to do something similar to you in this video?

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not very familiar with the UMC1820 but as long as you have enough inputs for your gear it will allow you to route everything into the MPC and process the audio there. You can split drums on the TR-8s across its 6 outputs and then route those into your audio interface and then into the MPC. Is that what you’re looking for? Just make sure the MPC supports the UMC1820.

    I remember using the MPC One as external sequencer for various gear but never used the plugin synths, only for Midi. Lately I have the ambition to multi sample various Boutiques etc and sequence only that from the MPC like with the old Emu and Akai samplers. I have a hard time with the song mode on the MPC though. Much better on the Digitakt with its simple mute automation. Deep house ftw!

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! 🙂 some of the MPC’s plugins are really good actually. Solina, Mellotron, Electric, Odyssey and Tubesynth are my favorites! Not a fan of Hype honestly. And I don’t use song mode as I prefer to change sequences myself during a jam. What I don’t like in the MPC is that mutes are not global. If you mute one track it won’t be reflected in another sequences. It’s a big downside for live performance IMO. Good luck with the synth sampling! Sounds like a fun process!

    Hey, Im trying to figure out the best way to add sidechain in my setup. MPC One > USB hub > UMC1820 Audio interface > Poly D / Hydrasynth / TR8s. Every external synth is connected via L/R outs to audio interface. My goal was bass from Poly D being sidechained from the TR8s ext in, but I can't figure out what to connect via what.

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! I’m not sure if I understand correctly. Do you want the sidechain to happen in the TR8 or MPC? If TR8, then there is an option to apply compression to external input using one of the 11 instruments as a sidechain source. If in the MPC, then you need to use a plugin called Mother Ducker but I’m not sure if it can use external input as a sidechain source.

    I’m thinking of getting an mpcone for sequencing hardware similar to your set up here. I have 2 boutiques, td3, tr8s. Can I have them all going into a usb hub and the hub goes into the mpc, then still have the audio going from each piece into a separate channel on my mixer Same as usual. So sequencing notes and chords via the mpc and still mixing and recording via the mixer.
    I’ve never owned or even played on an mpc one but I am really tempted to get one.

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The MPC is an amazing piece of gear for sequencing your synths but I prefer to sequence everything using MIDI cables because USB hubs usually introduce a lot of noise into the audio signal. I noticed this specially happens a lot with the boutiques. What you’re asking is possible but beware of noise issues using USB.

    • @h-dawg969
      @h-dawg969 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@synthsforbreakfast
      I am genuinely really tempted to get one.
      How would you go about it via MIDI with only the one 5 Pin MIDI out of the mpc one?
      I use MIDI leads sending clock etc already, so I’m more than happy doing that rather than usb. I just dunno how to with the one port, so thought that they’d have to go into a usb hub.
      Sorry for the newb questions but as I mentioned, I’ve never had the chance to play an mpc so won’t be able to try before purchasing.
      The hardware I’ll be needing MIDI out to is sequences to JU06a, Sh01a, TD3 & clock to RC202

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In my case I just daisy chain everything. So basically from MPC to the first synth, then from MIDI out of that synth to the next one and so on. Some synths don’t have MIDI thru so I only use one of that kind and place it at the end of the MIDI chain. But the best way is to use a MIDI thru box.

      MPC One (using it as a sequencer), TD-03 is a 303 clone for bass, Model D a Moog clone using it for the lead, Hydrasynth for pads and TR-8s is a drum machine using for all the drums.

      @@synthsforbreakfast hey, how do you route out two stereo signals from tr8s?

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can assign each drum, a group of drums or your external mix input to any of the 6 additional outputs of the TR-8s. In my case, I’m sending my external mix input to one of the additional output pairs. The pairs are labeled as A, B and C, this si how you find them in the menu. The advantage for me to route the mix input to the extra output is that any master fx, when enabled, won’t affect the ext mix in. But sidechain effect still works. This way I can put a master fx on the drums but not on the external mix input!

    • @dubioussource349

      @@synthsforbreakfast yo great method. Never thought about it this way around. Using the tr8 for sidechain ext. in yes I did in my last jam, but more simple, Model d into tr.. anyways, love the routing idea!

      Worth getting one? I'm torn between creating live sets that are improvised (loop pedal guitar, simple bass lines and chords on Synths composed on fly, drum machine mutes etc,) and using a DAW for more complete performance

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your only workflow is the one that you described, then I don’t think it will worth it. MPC is great for sequencing and sampling/playing samples. AFAIK it’s not good enough for looping. Everything that I make is kinda pre-programmed. My jamming consists of bringing or taking out elements to the mix live and play with filters and fx to create tension and open up sounds. For that, MPC is vert helpful, specially for sequencing!

    • @synthejayzer
      @synthejayzer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@synthsforbreakfast yes I do that way also ;) just wondering if there is any reason to change from Ableton 🤣 - I use sl mk iii for sequencing when not using the daw and saving for a deluge, but I need to try the mpc in store I think

    • @synthsforbreakfast
      @synthsforbreakfast  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was searching for a decent sequencer and groovebox lots of people suggested the Deluge. But I didn’t consider it due to two reasons: price and no proper screen. Synth engines are also, to my knowledge, are very basic. MPC has very good synths and effects also. Sequencing capabilities are superb! Sample manipulation is also very advanced. The big screen helps to guide you through all options and visualize every sample very well. And the price is very competitive. I really recommend trying it out before making final decision!
