This is actually so helpful I’m 15 and i haven’t started hockey school yet but i learned how to skate backwards by myself. First training lesson on Thursday, wish me luck lmao
If you can skate you are half way there, never too late to start. Hey even Bill Burr plays “pick up” hockey. A few of the guys at various sessions I’ve played at and currently play at have people in their 60’s playing who might not have speed on their skates, but they have poise and great stick handling and vision for passes that break out of defence or into the offensive zones. If you can afford it, give it a try. I think you will easily transition to hockey if you have the hockey mentality and buy the kit.
OMG, just that one tip to go on your toes is the one thing I’ve been missing (I’ve only just discovered Hockey for myself at 42 and am learning-by-doing in a beer league).
The kids that are fully invested in hockey and will end up really good beer league players and the ones that like hockey but don’t want to be on the ice 6 days a week.
I feel like from my own life experience... a lot of times kids cant learn technique like this toes one because they just aren’t able physically- the one kid who can I would be curious what he does off ice, as in stretches / exercises etc - you know what you need to do but just can’t sometimes
Yeah. It's all well and good saying "get on your toes" but if you don't tell them HOW they can get up there then it's a bit useless. Requires a lot of balance and ankle strength/mobility.
I agree with this, and the other attached comment. The number of times this coach blows his whistle right after he's just told them, "goh!" simply to stop them after one line goes and says "hey.." drives me nuts. Give the kids a chance to try. Explain how to be on your toes better. Also that comment about stabbing a guy? Odd
@@RichardTurlington also agree, it takes almost a minute for him to say 'Aiden' .. 'watch Aidens feet' and then Aiden shows how good he can do the cross overs exercise on his toes, the coach, at the start of the video just goes straight into the exercise withought any clear coaching ...... hmm
Great video, very interesting. But maybe you guys should watch speedskaters too, I think it is about bending the ankle and keeping it bend during the push. Instead of extending the ankle in the push.(like when running) I did an instruction video on that for speedskaters. Nr. 1 has english subtitles now.
You know, Ray Ferarro once remarked on a hockey broadcast, "that reminds me of something we used to say back in Trail. You can't teach fast and you can't fix stupid." Nice to see someone trying to prove that wrong. Well, half of it, anyway.
I wish I did ice hockey as a kid. I did roller hockey from 11years old so there was some difference in learning how to skate the most notable being stopping. This drill would have been nicer for me on ice than it was on roller, less slide on a plastic sports court for something this short of a distance.
I forgot to reduce the speed of my video. (I normally watch at 1.5x) This video is hilarious at that speed! I love the instruction, though. I'll be giving it a try in the near future.
Not trying to sounds condescending but this doesn't work on becoming a faster skater. This just works on quick feet. Maybe your acceleration from the side... #1 thing to improve on to be faster at skating is your form in stride. Most people don't get enough contact surface with their stride (small steps) but everyone is different...

Don't necessarily listen to this video this is not about how to do a crossovers that's for sure you'll never get anywhere if you stay on your toes that long two three steps and you're into a full stride
I want to be first woman on the NHL and I figured out that I just have to do everything I'm doing right now but a lot better so I was thinking that I just watched a couple videos on how to get really fast I'm already pretty fast not trying to brag but I just want to learn how to be faster and compete with me I will devour you
Not sure if you reply but I've been struggling to have energy recently. I had a tournament about a week ago and ever since then I've just been tired feeling. My game has dropped a lot and I'm playing worse than ever. Any ideas on why this might be happening?
I do an 8oz of red bull (lite, sugar is not needed in my case) right before a skate and it tends to help. I'll even do one before a late game and just skate as hard as I can every shift to burn it off. I do need to get to sleep, eventually. Also, stay hydrated!!
I would kill for my coach to teach at this quality and do drills like this. I do a power skating program, and the drills for girls are less effective and important than the ones for boys. They do balance, quick feet drills, shooting drills, recovery one, and actually get pushed.
need u as my coach lol, i suck and im 15, trying to get better, I cant keep up with other players, I'm so slow :(, I suck as well, I just have good hockey IQ, my shot isn't bad, but pretty bad XD, I am a playmaker for sure, decent passing, again horrible skating.

You're better off learning how to perfect your stride and balance before you waste your time doing this if you can't take a good forward stride so many kids are up for it some don't appear to be
sadly hockey coaches do not have the proper skating background...hes seems like a great coach but what he teaches is wrong. you get grip from the edges of the full blade not the toes, the more blade on the ice the more weight and power you can transfer on the ice. thats why speedskater have long blades (more glide and more pressure on the ice). although hes right about skating on the same plane (sideways) kids need not to jump up while doing cross over they lose the pressure (power) they just put on the ice, you need indeed to move the knees quick but bent towards the direction you're going not up (like jumping farther to the side, not up). been coaching both hockey and short track speed skating for years now, all the players who come dab into speed skating end up being the fastest of their league because they're taught how to properly do weight transfer and effective crossovers skating nowadays make a whole difference in the NHL, top players are also great skaters think of mcdavid, makar, mackinnon, kaprizov etc.
This actually sounds very correct in terms of being quick on your edges, but what I feel this drill does is primarily improve just the quickness of your feet on the ice, no?
Good instructions, but the guys need to train this and the trainer stopped them after few seconds. Let them train and do not stop the guys. Otherwise you have zero result. Guys need practise
Seems to be more about the “coach” spewing. Put the whistle away and let the kids work it out for a couple reps. And…don’t mention stabbing with skates to kids, just weird.
I’ve really come to the conclusion that figure skating ⛸ could help hockey players with speed & agility… I’ve heard that some pro teams employ figure coaches for some part in skills development…or maybe that’s just an urban legend? 😂
I’m damn near 40 and these vids have improved my beer league skills dramatically. See you at the show, boys
Im over 40 and this something to teach..... well im not just pro
See you up there buddy
Yeah, i bet you can drink way more beer now.

This guy is a great instructor! I’m digging these videos.
Agree. Best fundamentals teacher I have found on YT so far.
He's very technical which is key to development
Learning hockey eh?
I’m learning teaching methods, trying to help my kid.
He is just to annoying! You dont need a whistle to be a good coach!
This coach is the best I have seen. He has really broken down hockey skills and what the best way is.
I like how you're very strict but fair, as a kid I would've thrived under such influence
What a gem of a video. The foundation exists figuratively and literally within your lower body and core. Thank you!
I wish I had a coach like this when I was playing hockey.
Born in Holland and learnt to skate there. Grew up in Australia and lived for a bit in Toronto.
Wish I had grown up playing hockey

Valuable instruction for young hockey players to learn. Very good instructor
not only for the young ones :)
I wish I could send my kid to his camp. We watch all his videos. We live in Texas and I’ve never seen a camp here. It’s killin me !!!
im a grown ass man and im watching this. and i really appreciate this. perfect for my beer league
Awesome!
I feel you brother!
This drill requires great strength and balance. These young boys will get it but it will take time.
My thoughts on this too. They are still not strong enough in their legs to fully get this drill correct
@1:55
"Imagine that if we had that in hockey? You stab a guy with the... uhm. So, you're on your toes!"

i love these specifically beccause you can see exactly which kids care about becoming better and the ones that genuinely dont give a crap

burnout and overtraining. take a break and go easy on yourself. find other hobbies and interests, find balance.
Have you recently been "medicated"? Just curious. I am noticing this with some of the youth players lately.
But also what James said. Burnout is such a huge factor and devastating to many players.
There is zero substitute for good sleep and sufficient recovery, physically and mentally
