I lived extremely frugally for years, then one day I discovered my savings had grown enough to sustain my frugal lifestyle well past my most optimistic life expectancy. At this point extreme frugality seemed silly, I now spend in ways that bring the most pleasure while still staying on a glide path that will allow my savings to last longer than I will. I now budget in ways that save me the most time, effort and give the most happiness.
When I was a kid, my mom taught us kids how to set up a tent. We would sleep out in the yard in our tents and had a blast doing it. She would take a blanket and we would all lay on it together. She showed us star constellations and planets. She knew a lot about astronomy. We loved it! It gave us time with my mom and was a teaching time with her, too. She helped us have love, respect and awe for our Creator. It’s one of the best memories I have with my mom. Every time I look up at the stars I think about what an incredible mom she was. I was so blessed. I miss my mom every day.
My friends make fun of my frugality, but when I took a year off to travel, who had the last laugh? Now I learned to cut and color my own hair, fixed my own vacuum (cost $5 thanks to TH-cam instruction), cook at home most days, drive an old car and downsized my house. I love taking trips around the world and having adventures, but otherwise, I live very simply.
Wow, you managed to take a whole year off? You rock!! That's extremely inspirational. Where did you go? What was your savings plan? What bargains did you find? Tell me more!!
I earned mostly low wages my whole life but now I have a modest little house with no debt. MY furniture is at least thirty five years old . I have kept my chosen possessions in good shape.
You made lots a really good points. I live a frugal life style myself. I started learning as a kid. It's one of the most valuable lessons to learn in life. If you have extra cash, it's much more satisfying to help a cause, person or animal that you believe will benefit, than buying something you don't need. Over my life, I've taken in several unwanted 2nd hand pets. Although it costs money, I'm very fortunate to have a low cost Vet clinic near by. I take them for medical care, nurse them to health & look after them. They're worth more than their weight in gold. They've filled my heart with lots of love, sincere appreciation, companionship & priceless laughs!
Frugal people don't tie their sense of identity to THINGS. They recognize how influential Advertising and media companies are, and will limit their exposure, if necessary.
YES this! I moved to the country for this reason - now, a trip to the city is quite overwhelming & tiring because of all the in your face advertising EVERYWHERE! Super noticeable! Never noticed it when I was in the city - also we also notice sirens in the city! There's always sirens. In 3 years living in the country I have heard...wait for it....2 sirens. that's it. and you go stand out on the porch to investigate because it's so weird to hear one lol
Classic rock Lover this is meeeeee😣😣😣 I need to learn to stop tying my indentities to the things I have and don’t have. But idk how to do that😭 especially being a sophomore in college and having friends/ a social circle who don’t even know what the word frugal means. But limiting what I watch (like beauty and lifestyle guru channels) and instead watching financial channels such as these has helped a whole lot.
I just look as advertisements as amusement. "How can they say that w/o getting sued?" . I sometimes appreciate a ad that informs me, but that's rare and I never impulse-buy.
My first degree is in advertising. By my senior year, I didn't want it anymore. Advertising is a disgusting profession. They work to entice you to buy things. Their only goal in life. The more creative and manipulative you are, the more they congratulate you. It's all a load of bullshit. You're better off ignoring them altogether.
Kathy Radford I beieve her 100% on it!...because there *are* people out there that'll throw *all* of their coins away & not bat an eye over it! I've seen many people do it myself!
S Hartman a friend of mine always collected change that people threw on the ground and soon they just gave her their spare change, cursing how they hated spare change in their pockets. she kept putting it in a container and ending up buying a $600 show saddle. that proved to me that perseverance of saving and what can be accomplished by saving over a long time.
@@kathyradford4048 My millennial do! They 'don't' like to carry cash or change! Who are these people?? I've always heard picking up change from the ground lets the universe know that you are open to more wealth! My local Kroger store told me that the Coinstar machines don't take real silver coins...I check the receptical EVERY time i go...98% of the time I find coins! I keep a plastic envelope in my driver side door I put only 'found $$ in. i've almost filled it up. One day while waiting in my car I'll add it up!
@MrEnergyCzar ... There's a huge difference although I have called myself "cheap". Being a daddy's girl, I learned so many life lessons from him. I love quality over quantity. Family is #1 😊
Thanks, you have given me a review of what to teach to my grandchildren. I am a 66 year old and my mother, who was born in 1917, raised me with the WWII slogan, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." That principle has saved me a lot of money in my lifetime.
It's crazy, right? I am thrilled when someone is sloppy with their cart at Aldi and I get to put it back and 'earn' a quarter. I found 14 cents in the grocery store parking lot recently and I swear, it made my day lol.
I work on a checkout and you would be surprised by how many people say keep the change as if the store needs extra i tend to put it a side and put it in the children's charity collection pot we have in store.
The BEST one is the smaller house one. It boggles my mind that people believe that kids NEED their own room. We have 7 people living in 1100 sq ft. Two boys share one room, three girls in one room, and my husband and I in the master. We make it work because our home fits our budget.
As I followed your 25 Habits, I checked off nearly all of them. Also, I live by myself and do not own a car. I get exercise when I walk to work. I was raised to be frugal and love my lifestyle. Thank you for the simple tips and keep up the good work!
Sara Pause, I don't think it's being frugal, I think it is more how to be wise with money. It's about life choices with the money that comes into the household. What this woman is saying, isn't really being frugal.
My husband and I keep a mason jar on his nightstand in our bedroom, which is where we keep all of our spare change so that it's not floating all over the house, car, etc. We cash it in once a year (usually in the springtime). It's fun to guess how much money is in the jar before we cash it in. And I feel like the mason jar filled with coins doubles as a decorative item in the bedroom, just looks kinda cool I guess. Great video!
Not so convinced about shopping around for too long or ordering everything online. If it takes you hours to find the best deal on something and the difference you save is less that what you could have earned int the same time, then what's the point? Also when you let your local shops die one by one by ordering online and as an end result you cannot get by anymore without car, or your children cannot have a local summer job because the community around you is economically dead, that is also not a saving in the long term. It is a delicate balance between short term frugality and long term economic and social goals.
I think being frugal Is different for everyone. I'm a minimalist but I cannot stand staying at home like a hermit, our world has so much to enjoy out of your house. Our family doesn't eat out as much anymore but we do enjoy going out together and trying out different restaurants or going to markets. Less is more. Memories are more important than material things. I agree with the house idea. Big houses are so pointless...like that family room that has the dining room table that is never sat at?????
Lots of good ideas here. I cut cable 4 years ago. I missed it at first, but now not at all. My daughter gave me her password for Netflix & Hulu and I pay half. I used to spend a lot on books. Now I use the library. They have movies for free. My car is 9 years old and I’m religious about servicing it. I do my own lawncare and I’m almost 70 years old. This means I can take wonderful trips. Next May I will make my final payment on my home (1200 sq. Ft. Built in 1970). Then I plan to travel to Iceland and Ireland. I enjoy the travel so much more than an extravagant lifestyle. But to each their own.
I thought i'd want a bigger house, but now that I own one I want an even smaller one. We live in a 3 bed townhouse and I don't want any more storage space or anything more to clean or a higher mortgage. no thank you. :-)
The Frugal Five I feel the same. We went from a 1000 sq foot townhouse to an almost 3000 sq foot home. Although I love my house, it's too big, too expensive and I'm the only one that cleans it. I don't want to go back to 1000 sq feet but 2000 would probably have worked for us.
The Frugal Five You said it! We’re moving to Seattle with a family of 5 into between 850-1100 sq ft from a 2400 sq ft home. I can’t stand it... too much to clean and too much space for things to accumulate 👍
I love living in a small space. I currently live in 700 sq ft. I have lived in apartments as small as 400 sq ft and even moved into a camper (75sq ft) for 5 years. You learn what you really value when you live in a small space. (Also it's easy to clean😆!)
In my country we have the most expensive electricity in the world. It's really important to unplug electrical items you are not using. Because even when electric item is on standby it's still using electricity. Close all doors in the house, and only heat/air condition the room your in. Use natural light instead of using lights all the time. Check to see if your electricity contract has peak hour costs. Some parts of day/night costs more to use electricity. So it's best to avoid using washing machines, charging phones, etc during electricity peak hours.
I unplugged the power strip by a tv we don't use. Turns out I unplugged the tv satellite. My husband called the provider angrier than a stirred up hornets nest. They came out that day only to tell him to plug in the strip. Good thing I'm the one who pays the bills. I do not use my dryer even in the dead of winter. Hang the clothes out, beat off the ice and hang them inside late afternoon. It keeps the inside of the house from drying out. I only bake in the winter and leave the oven door open when done baking. I use fans in the summer, keeping my house somewhat cool when I use the ac, the fan makes you feel cooler. I open the doors at night to let in the cool air provided it's not humid out. During the summer, I avoid using the cook top. Mostly eat vegetarian wraps. When I do cook, I make a big pot of food and eat on that for several days. Heat it up using the micro. Sweep, don't vacuum, hand wash the dishes. Keep my hair long. Wear it down in the winter, up in the summer. Wear my clothes several times before I wash them. All that, I still pay ridiculous electricity rates.
I totally believe in heating and cooling ONLY the rooms you use. I do not have central air and heat. It is EXTREMELY important to get a good seal on the air conditioning unit on the window, to use a wind guard on your door and utilize a blanket in the winter months.
FYI not everything plugged in draws power! Ex: A vacuum will never use power until it is on! A cell charger just plugged in but not charging does not draw! Things like your microwave that have a clock are drawing such a small amount that it would reflect on your bill in the amount of $1.00 every two months! LED lights are used in every appliance in home! Now when a light is on of course it draws but, the amps are very low, given you use LED bulbs! You use more power flipping the light on and of than you do letting it run for two days! Most TVs and or electronics today have an energy star setting using this reduces drastically! Standbye modes will reflect $2.00 in 6 months! Things that cost are motors, ranges, hot water heaters, fridge, garage doors washer/dryers and any lawn or tool equipment that is designed to use electricity! It goes for cars too turning your car off and on uses more gas than running your car in idle or driving! Try this you can leave stuff plugged in!
I do many of the 25 now, but only after years of spending money on impulse. Yes, I was one of those well-meaning people who signed up for gym memberships but stopped going after the 2nd time, still paying the monthly dues hoping I’d get motivated again. I shopped when I didn’t need anything, just enjoyed the thrill it gave me. Going out with girlfriends for lunch then shopping seemed to become a way to make me feel good about my life. It was a known fact that none of us wanted to go home empty-handed. Just constantly wasting money that I had worked so hard to earn. I’ve seen your video before but didn’t comment, so now I want you to know how much you have helped me “get smart” about money. I started watching Dave Ramsey because of you too. I have learned to be happy staying at home now that I have retired. There’s so many hobbies that I wanted to do all those years but never did because of time restraints. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I admire you so much after watching so many of your videos. With best regards and looking positively toward the future!
I truly believe staying home saves money because every time you get n the car its gunna cost something whether its costing you gas or spending money you don't need to spend.
To a point... I had to get new tires, mine got dry rot from sitting in driveway all winter because i never go out. Turns out they need to spin regularly, it activates some chemical in the rubber that keeps them pliable. Who knew??? Tires were expensive.
The "fix stuff" one is so true! I have never done a big fix on my car, but last week I got my hands dirty and looked up some how-to videos on youtube, and fixed the turbo in my car, myself! I probably saved hundreds of dollars. Now spending less on food is my real challenge....
I believe in kids sharing rooms also. My sister and I did and it worked out fine. My former husband insisted on the kids having separate rooms and we had 4 kids! So what did the kids do? They all piled into the older one's bed every night and slept in the same one anyway! Face palm!
They will prefer their own rooms eventually. Don't worry. As they get older they will want their privacy. Or maybe u can rent ur rooms. I don't know. I said maybe.
I never wanted my own room. I roomed with my sister and even when there was a room available when my brother moved out, we stayed together. I never understand parents catering to what they THINK their kids need. They don't NEED their own room. They NEED to be taught financial independence, sacrifice, hard work, and not giving into desires and envy of what others have, rather appreciate what YOU have living within your means.
14 is so important! I deliver food for a somewhat popular restaurant in my city right near a business park and near several other businesses. I am shocked how often the same people order almost every single day. $15 on lunch x 5 days a week = $75!!!! Holy cow!
I do all of this and it occurred to me that frugal people are also healthier because of not smoking and drinking, drugs or exposed to these negative things through others so yes our family and friends should be encouraging too. Being content means a lot- great advice and stick to it😀
We go to a hair cutting school for our cuts. It’s great! The students and instructors are fantastic. We use paper towels but we live in an apartment and it’s not always best for us to use towels due to lack of washer/dryer. I agree, fellow frugal friends are a must :-)
Love this! WHO throws change away? That's just nuts LOL. The lunch thing is huge. People argue that packing a lunch still costs, but definitely not the $10-$15 I see people at my office spend. Ironically these people also can't afford to retire...
+Kristen B Exactly! It's almost as if the corporations encourage the lunch spending - one more thing to set back their savings and ensure employees are dependent on their jobs for longer.
Great idea about repairing items. Yesterday, I took the damaged shoulder strap off a bag and will use the smaller handle instead. Saved $34. I am also using my sewing machine and overlocker more.
New subscriber who is SO excited to have another frugal tuber to pull inspiration from! Cooking makes the BIGGEST difference in budget and health! Cook cook cook cook cook!!!!! I pick staying home too and this is GOOD. You made your home a desirable place to be and this is also good! Keep fighting the good fight lady!
I love this video, thank you. We're only a few months into handling money the right way. Budgeting, packing lunch etc...I used to do the opposite of all these things. One of the hardest things is the social pressure towards us for being frugal. Work lunches don't exist and I've been telling people no a lot more. Thanks for all your videos, you and some others on youtube have really helped us out.
My husband's truck is 15 years old and has almost 240,000 miles on it and mine is 13 years old with 108,000 miles on it. They arnt beautiful but they run great and are paid for. We also have a 944 Sq ft home for our family of 5.
I agree about the home. My home is approximately 1500 square feet. Before we were in it, the occupants raised 2 boys, mom and dad, two small rooms and one Jack and Jill bathroom. They got along just fine.
I am frugal mom as well...sadly have to let go friends who is'nt, just can't compete with them...but not so sad, I feel awesome a lctually. I enjoy life with family and spring is almost here in Calgary, so excited what we can do in our backyard...
The course is called Cosmotology. Hair, makeup and Biology. Health and Beauty. There is more to study then just holding scissors. Our Community College has a program where the students do cut people’s hair for $10.00. That way,you are supporting potential new comers to the industry.
I agree with most of your list, but sewing, knitting and gardening could become very expensive. I like to buy my clothes at second hand shops and go to the farmer's market instead. Camping is cheap, but I like to travel more comfortable, so I budget to my vacations.
Rita Váradi Cheers, Rita! I grew up in a camping family and I had such horrible experiences. If my kids REALLY want to...they can go with my in-laws because I just can’t bring myself to do it again. I’ll do AirBnB and travel 👍
I buy all of my of my yarn at yard sales and thrift stores when they have half price or bag sales. Same for fabric. This works for me because i make rugs and afghans. Fabric can be tricky, I don’t make clothes, just gifts like table runners, etc.
Providers in some countries include cable and internet in the same package, selling separate only on occasion and it costing more than the package. I do not watch cable but I still have to pay for it because I need the internet. This is how they make us pay for all...
Buying used non-hard surfaced furniture is something I can no longer be convinced of. Recently there was a huge infestation of bed bugs at a local thrift store and customers were outraged. Couches, beds, chairs.. will always be new (when needed of course) in my home.
I'm the same way. I won't buy soft furniture used anymore for that reason unless it's from someone that I know and trust (even though I've been seriously disappointed with the new stuff we bought - it's not nearly as sturdy). Even used clothing I'm cautious about now - we have strict protocols we follow when we bring anything potentially bed buggy into the house.
Bed bugs are exoskeletal, their bones are on the outside, as other insects are. Borax is extremely sharp and damages them. Get a shaker or sieve and sprinkle the borax on your sheete where you sleep so that when they come for a bite they are likely to rub against the shards of borax. Also sprinkle all soft furnishings and leave it there for some time after the biting stops. Or more expensive and hazardous is diatomacious earth - same treatment but be very careful you don’t breathe in the fine dust. Not for your bed! Borax is cheap ( not boracic acid as that is something else).
Great, great post-thank you! I calculated that the three of us brown bagging lunches rather than buying would save us $5,000 per year! So, we are doing that. I still haven’t gotten round to replacing paper napkins and towels with cloth, yet. Guess that’s the next step… A trick for food shopping is to “shop your pantry” before you go out shopping. You may already have it.
What about growing your own food! Even just herbs in pot plants. I hate when I have to pay couple of dollars for a bunch of parsley when I just need a little bit
Señor MeinKrafter2020 I'm guessing you haven't been in one. Sure they have their knockoff brands, but you can also find many of the bigger brands in there. A penny saved is a penny earned.
@@SenorMeinKrafter Some things you might want certain quality on and some things just are not that important. You have to figure out what YOU think is important. A good example for me is, in fact, foil. I like Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty. I also prefer Charmin bath tissue. I feel if there are MANY other things I don't care and buy store brands or off brands, I am going to "splurge" on the things I feel will make my life more comfortable. That is the difference between cheap and frugal. You may have different items you prefer a better brand like Tupperware instead of a former butter container for leftovers. That is unimportant to me and I will take the cheap way out.
Bravo...love this...I already do every single thing on the list, but it's good to know I'm not alone in my thinking! I even say...I'm driving my car until the "wheels fall off" so that one really hit home.
I have been frugual all my life. My colleagues that make more than me usually have problems at the end of the month saying they dont have money anymore. And me im like never crying or without money at the end of the month
I'm a homebody too. I love being on the lounge and watching a movie. It's winter in Oz so all the more for cuddling up under a blanket. Love youtube for learning also - google anything and it comes up on youtube. Great point about leavingstuff in the cart for a time before buying.
I just came across your channel and I love your simple yet effective approach to all things related to personal finances. I would also like to add, frugal people don't get into phone contacts (instead use pay as you go) and they do not buy a new phone every 2 years. They use their phone until it literally dies, and then pay cash for a new one. I spent about 250 Euros on my last smartphone in 2016. And although it's cracked, it still works and I don't plan on getting another one anytime soon.
Thank you for the tips! We're a family of four and I plan to homeschool my kids by fall 2019. We are currently on Dave Ramsey's baby step two which we just started in June. Your videos have been very helpful and encouraging. With $50k debt, we need as much advice as possible. Thank you again.
Yay! I've been living frugally without even knowing it. I think growing up poor and NEEDING to find ways to save make it easy to seem frugal even when you could change your spending habits later in life 😸
I agree! At 30 yrs old I am a first generation college graduate in my family. Even though my financial situation has changed from growing up I still do things a certain type of way. For example I love name brand clothes but I literally only buy from thrifts or Ebay when I really want something. I will also wait to half off days at thrifts to get extra percent off. People at work always have told me you dress so nice! Little do they know my entire outfits cost like 10 bucks from head to toe!
Lol same! I have been living frugally forever. Mainly because doing the things explained in the video just make sense to me. I vary rarely do anything that I can’t justify or make common sense out of.
I love this video! I totally agree with sharing bedrooms. I think its great for kids and helps to bond them. I also shared a bedroom with my sister growing up :)
Gardening tip: This year And last we grew the best garden. This year first time from seed. We started a perennial herb bed too all from seed. Not one purchased plant. Great activity for the kids to see where the food comes from too. This year one of the pumpkins seeds sprouted from last years compost!!!!! Its so much fun to watch it grow, i planted squash amongst our other perennials and they made a fantastic awesome looking architectural ground cover and soo many squash from one plant. Best of all no weeds because they shade the ground. They are so easy care for too. You can grow food anywhere in your yard. I wish we had planted our berm this year now. Nothing like going to the yard for groceries!! Buy seed at the end of the year for best prices and use the following spring. Do this no dig method for almost no money. To start the bed, preferably in fall, put down a layer of cardboard, wet with a hose, top with compost, cow manure, straw bedding or whatever you have then top with wood chips. Pull back the wood chips and plant. Once the plants get established, push the wood chips back. Each year add more wood chips. The best ones come from free from tree services. They are happy to give them to you. Do not till anything. Ever. Its the best way to get fresh organic food and you know whats in it. The growth is amazing. Almost no weeds, and very little watering once the wood chips break down and make soil. Best to start the plot in fall. Worms love the glue in the cardboard and start working the soil for you. Its the “Back to Eden” method. Lots of good information on you tube. Get growing. Save tons of money with little effort.
Great video Dana! The last tip is my favorite! I have a friend that is the total opposite of frugal so we are trying to find our happy medium when hanging out
Great advice! I've been frugal my whole life, both of my parents were frugal and I now live very frugally. I don't make much money at the moment but even if I were making more I'd still live a frugal life. I am now working on paying down my credit card debt and then tackling my student loans in order to eventually have the money to get a used car. Thanks for your advice, looking forward to your many advice videos! I also LOVE Dave Ramsey, good Christian and great at helping folks learn how to manage their money.
Sometimes State or National Forest have free campsites. Google maps shows these areas and then click on the forest name and google info on this forest.
Great tips! I too am a homebody, I just enjoy hanging out with my sofa 😄. My biggest down fall is food....I love good especially when it's served to me, 😄😆. I don't know about camping, lol...🐜🕷🐞🐝🐛🕸🌻...noooooo! 😅.
How to get your kids on board the frugal bandwagon? ( Cuz a pre - teen can really derail the best laid plans.... ) = tell your 10 + year old (s ) that she or he needs to help extend the life of the car; by washing it, learning to change the oil , not having people drive it unless necessary , ETC. BECAUSE THIS IS THE CAR THAT WILL BE THEIRS WHEN THEY HIT 16, and if they don't want to have to drive a beater, they need to get with the program.
martha jean Mcgrew Love that! My daughter is still driving my 99 Infiniti. She was going to buy a new car 2 years ago, and I asked her why. I told her to put a car payment in her savings every month, and when she wants one she can buy it cash. I paid $5000 for it 9 years ago. That's the way you stretch $$$$.
I'm frugal n do alot of things you mentioned here, although I do eat at a restaurant once a week. I wish I could meet a good heartedman , that's a frugal homebody like me !! But being a homebody. . . . how am I gonna meet him?
I'm so happy I found your channel! You are so genuine and I can learn a lot from you! I already do some of what you mentioned but got a long way to go to stop eating out-- still my problem!
I watched this video 2 or 3 years ago, and it’s just as good now as it was then. And doing a comparison of my frugality then and my frugality now-I’m more frugal now than I was then, and some of these tips I’ve integrated into my life and made them my own. Thank you for this excellent video!
I subscribed when I heard "homebody." I never understood these people who need constant entertainment at overpriced locations when, basically, all your cool stuff is at home.
Same with crochet. I live in Spain. I like to crochet as it is relaxing for me, but the yarn is more expensive than going to the cinema!! About gardening vegetables, you will expend more money on water and good quality earth or fertilizer than what you get. So if those things make tou happy, go ahead. But not for the sake of being frugal
It depends where you live. You live in city where there is everything, then it's not worth it sewing, unless for a special design you can't find anywhere.
Being frugal helps me paid off my credit cards. I haven’t shopped for anything in the last 6months, except for groceries. I make a list when grocery shopping and stick to it. Think thoroughly before purchasing anything now I need to keep this habit.
Frugal people begin each day with a good early morning cry. Im frugal so i cant go out and party on the weekends with my friends, im happy 2 sit at home with my 2 best friends MY CAT & MY LOATHING. Its awesome. Love u dana!
Frugal living pays off. 66 and 73 and trying to spend all the savings now by going on fancy trips but still have very fond memories of the family camping adventures. Everyday life continues to be relatively frugal. It is hard to be wasteful when thrift is ingrained in your lifestyle.
Gardening is a great one! There are some really easy things to grow which cost almost nothing if you have some area in your yard. Just need seeds and some garden soil (plus watering). We probably don't grow a ton of things which saves us a lot but its maybe $50-$75 for the summer at least for just a small commitment. This summer, we put green onions on some water to get the roots going again and planted them. We don't buy green onions on lot because its hard to use them up sometimes before they go bad. Having them in the garden is great cause we have access to them whenever we want and add them to our meals more often now. They are great too because as you clip them, they will continue to grow so they last a long time!
We do many of these things. My family loves to be at home. We don't eat out much. We are entertained by simple things. We do go on vacation once a year but we go frugal even then. We get a condo so we don't have to buy food out the whole time. Our last condo was $55 a night with full kitchen.
Jenny Conklin yes old cars are great I like that cheaper to maintain and the older style cars have more space.Insurance is more cheaper and compact car is cheaper too.
Everyone in our household would pay in dollars for whatever they spent that day & would throw all the change they accumulated into a gigantic jar. As summer got near, we'd roll all the change & it would usually run anywhere from $600-$700 and pay for our vacation! Easy way to save money for a trip & not feel deprived :-)
My dad has done this my entire life. One time i was short on college tuition and he brought out the Kenmore water jug and told me to start rolling lol. It covered the $300 or so that I couldn't come up with.
PROUD OF YOU!!
This post made me realize...I could TH-cam cooking "shows." Thanks!
You rock!
Inspiration!!!
I earned mostly low wages my whole life but now I have a modest little house with no debt. MY furniture is at least thirty five years old . I have kept my chosen possessions in good shape.
Jeanne Bowes God Bless you for living within your means. You have no debt and that is the best freedom! You must sleep well and deserve it!
I've been living the frugal life for the last 15 years it really works never give up.
Not usually...
I used to buy lunch before and my money basically flew away. Now I bring my own lunch and it has saved me a lot of money.
And coffee...i refuse to buy it.i make my own!
It really does. If you get coffee and buy lunches out during your work day, you can easily spend over $300 a month!
Who throws away change???? OMG that's crazy!! We once took a whole bin of change to the bank and got about $200. I can't imagine throwing it away.
S Hartman I do not believe her when she says people do that
Kathy Radford I beieve her 100% on it!...because there *are* people out there that'll throw *all* of their coins away & not bat an eye over it!
People confuse Frugal with being Cheap...
What do you mean
Example: My dad was so cheap he would dictate how many squares of t.p. we could use when going to the bathroom. That's cheap.
Cheap is when it becomes rigid and selfish. We should never impose our frugality on others. Guests, friends, relatives etc, should be treated.
@MrEnergyCzar ... There's a huge difference although I have called myself "cheap". Being a daddy's girl, I learned so many life lessons from him. I love quality over quantity. Family is #1 😊
Cheap is a miserly attitude and frugal is managing your resources to get something better--paid for with cash, of course!
Thanks, you have given me a review of what to teach to my grandchildren. I am a 66 year old and my mother, who was born in 1917, raised me with the WWII slogan, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." That principle has saved me a lot of money in my lifetime.
Throwing money in the trash can is horrifying! I picked up a penny this morning!
Found out someone I work with used to do this and I couldn't believe it.
I agree! Never throw away money.. it all adds up
It's crazy, right? I am thrilled when someone is sloppy with their cart at Aldi and I get to put it back and 'earn' a quarter. I found 14 cents in the grocery store parking lot recently and I swear, it made my day lol.
i make fires with $100 bills i think i'll save money and just use $50 dollar bills in the future
I work on a checkout and you would be surprised by how many people say keep the change as if the store needs extra i tend to put it a side and put it in the children's charity collection pot we have in store.
We are big Dave Ramsey fans and we do all the things that Frugal people do and we are sooo happy. Doesn't kill u to b frugal.
I also love the library, for audio tapes, free movies, and reading:)
Every time I start to lead astray I get back to basics..watch yo videos
ok I wanted to learn how to be frugal and I discovered I am already frugal!
Me too
😎
Sara Pause, I don't think it's being frugal, I think it is more how to be wise with money. It's about life choices with the money that comes into the household. What this woman is saying, isn't really being frugal.
I was raised frugal so it is a way of life. I do spend on certain things that I really want.
The hardest part is finding frugal friends. lol..
Hi
Isis Escobar, I am very frugal. Do you want to be my friend?
More like inpossible 😒
Very trur
CAN I GET AN AMEN👐
My husband and I keep a mason jar on his nightstand in our bedroom, which is where we keep all of our spare change so that it's not floating all over the house, car, etc. We cash it in once a year (usually in the springtime). It's fun to guess how much money is in the jar before we cash it in. And I feel like the mason jar filled with coins doubles as a decorative item in the bedroom, just looks kinda cool I guess. Great video!
Robyn me too!
I had to use an opaque jar, a big thrift-shop vase, to keep temptation utta sight outta mind.
You can also find really good free workouts on TH-cam - for those of us who don’t like to run in the winter
Kelly kelly I agree about THAT!!!! But there are SO many FREE and inexpensive events that people can go to and enjoy themselves!
Agree. Minimalism is not having anything at all but having only things that matter to you.
Same
Lots of good ideas here.
Lawn? Why not to plant few fruit trees?
Great tips! One more: Frugal people use their library!
I'm A Mom Too, Meghan My library has a book sale twice a year. I once walked out with 171 books for $1. Best day for me!
I'm A Mom Too, Meghan i used almost all these principle ,I can't stand being at home all the time!!So do free or low cost entertainment things.
Mickey Rob h
the frugal landlord Not all the time
Mickey Rob I don’t believe you ... That’s just NOT possible 🤯
I don't want to go back to 1000 sq feet but 2000 would probably have worked for us.
yes, frugal people clean their own homes so th smaller the space the better.
q
So it's best to avoid using washing machines, charging phones, etc during electricity peak hours.
where do u live for ur power to be so expensive?
Guam?
What is a point of life, if you only stay at home? World is amazing, try it sometimes.
Face palm!
+Marquita Martin LOL!!!!!! Love it. 😂💕
I hated sharing a room with my sister. Loved having my own space.
Marquita Martin was
They will prefer their own rooms eventually.
Holy cow!
Find a penny, pick it up and all the day you will have good luck!
+Libby Reed YES!!!!!!!!!! 💕👊🏻
So your luck will never end, pass it on to your best friend :)
I do all of this and it occurred to me that frugal people are also healthier because of not smoking and drinking, drugs or exposed to these negative things through others so yes our family and friends should be encouraging too. Being content means a lot- great advice and stick to it😀
Really?
We go to a hair cutting school for our cuts. It’s great! The students and instructors are fantastic.
We use paper towels but we live in an apartment and it’s not always best for us to use towels due to lack of washer/dryer.
I agree, fellow frugal friends are a must :-)
Amanda Stone i also go to hair schools for cuts and sometimes for color. I use box color and air dry my hair most of the time
Kristen B tis true friend!!
Kristen B I am so shocked ppl threw away their money too! very wasteful..
Debt Free Dana ツ yes!!! I’ve never even thought of this. Great point Dana!
I enjoy taking my lunch to work vs buying lunch. I take a sandwich. LOL
Great idea about repairing items. Yesterday, I took the damaged shoulder strap off a bag and will use the smaller handle instead. Saved $34.
I am also using my sewing machine and overlocker more.
You give some simple, down-to-earth, do-able advice, Ms Frugal. And I am loving it!!! Thanks.
Oh my... I have Asian back ground, and those rules are exactly same in Asia too. Frugal is not cheap, but it is the smartest way of living.
+Carly Ferdinand Thanks, Carly! You too! 💪🏻✨💕
Frugal people save for their next car and never have car payments.
And you don’t worry about it getting stolen 😉
I agree about the home. My home is approximately 1500 square feet. Before we were in it, the occupants raised 2 boys, mom and dad, two small rooms and one Jack and Jill bathroom. They got along just fine.
I am frugal mom as well...sadly have to let go friends who is'nt, just can't compete with them...but not so sad, I feel awesome a lctually. I enjoy life with family and spring is almost here in Calgary, so excited what we can do in our backyard...
you are my soulmate hahaha! I love staying at home, like I can stand staying at home for days! So glad to have found your channel! Just subscribed! :)
I love camping!!! It brings my family back together and we have a lot of fun!
I cringed when you said that people actually throw away change. I throw it in a jar
Last year we had over $50.00 just in change we picked up from the ground!
Hey, flowers are productive. My heart's gotta have 'em.
also many flowers are edible and can be used as teas ...
I really like how simple you make things. It’s a simple video format. It’s a simple plan to live by. Really well done!
I once saved $60 in dimes. Find a good size jar and put your change in it and see want happens over time.
Rita Váradi i buy used clothing at Goodwill or garage sales... & I have a sewing machine to alter the hem, or holes... its such a money saver!!
Farmers markets are so expensive 😭 I wish they weren’t
Rita Váradi Cheers, Rita! I grew up in a camping family and I had such horrible experiences. If my kids REALLY want to...they can go with my in-laws because I just can’t bring myself to do it again. I’ll do AirBnB and travel 👍
Gardening is NOT expensive at all. That is an excuse for not putting the effort in.
I buy all of my of my yarn at yard sales and thrift stores when they have half price or bag sales. Same for fabric. This works for me because i make rugs and afghans. Fabric can be tricky, I don’t make clothes, just gifts like table runners, etc.
cable is a waste of money
Agreed. Netflix and Hulu are soooo much cheaper and have a lot more on them than cable does.
sheis jennifere Yes. I got rid of my cable this year. I have Sling Tv and Hulu. And I don't watch them much either.
Providers in some countries include cable and internet in the same package, selling separate only on occasion and it costing more than the package. I do not watch cable but I still have to pay for it because I need the internet. This is how they make us pay for all...
I heard that Jenny. I have Netflix or You Tube. That is all I need.
and time.
I'm currently crocheting resuable swiffer sweeper dryers to save money on the ones you would buy and are single day.
🥂
Trishia Watson - I agree!!!
Yesss! I live in ohio. There are lots of bed bug outbreaks around here!!
Great, great post-thank you! I calculated that the three of us brown bagging lunches rather than buying would save us $5,000 per year! So, we are doing that. I still haven’t gotten round to replacing paper napkins and towels with cloth, yet. Guess that’s the next step…
A trick for food shopping is to “shop your pantry” before you go out shopping. You may already have it.
Hey, another Bonnie :') hi
What about growing your own food! Even just herbs in pot plants. I hate when I have to pay couple of dollars for a bunch of parsley when I just need a little bit
I know right! I have two guinea pigs and I bought a little pot of parsley for $3. I let them eat it then put the pot back outside and it grows again.
Frugal people shop at the dollar tree! I find i do MOST of these things, not all. Thanks for your channel! Have a blessed weekend

No, cheap people do. High quality > low quality.
Señor MeinKrafter2020 I'm guessing you haven't been in one. Sure they have their knockoff brands, but you can also find many of the bigger brands in there. A penny saved is a penny earned.
i goto 99 cents creations @ 149 w 24 st ny 10011 / 6th and 7th aves nyc
This is my first time watching you and I agree/practice many of the things you said in your video. Lots of great ideas!
This woman just told me that I am a frugal person. That is good to know :-) Thanks.
I pick up pennies too! 😊
In our country we say such coins bring luck.
Check your loose change online. There is a book available that informs you if your old coins are worth more than a penny, etc.

That's the way you stretch $$$$.
yeah, howdy!!!
Excellent advice. I'll keep that in mind if I ever have kids and have a car I want to give them.
Lol...you are the boss.
Genius!
Frugal and proud of it.
Hope you’re ok 💕
Making your own clothes you won't save a dime. Fabric is so expensive.
Unless you buy items at thrift shops. A dress can make a top, or be revised into a way prettier dress, and many more!Learned that on YT 😊
thrift shops
Same with crochet. I live in Spain. I like to crochet as it is relaxing for me, but the yarn is more expensive than going to the cinema!! About gardening vegetables, you will expend more money on water and good quality earth or fertilizer than what you get. So if those things make tou happy, go ahead. But not for the sake of being frugal
It depends where you live. You live in city where there is everything, then it's not worth it sewing, unless for a special design you can't find anywhere.
Making your own clothes saves you money if you love well made clothes. If you buy cheap clothes then you can’t compare.
Being frugal helps me paid off my credit cards. I haven’t shopped for anything in the last 6months, except for groceries. I make a list when grocery shopping and stick to it. Think thoroughly before purchasing anything now I need to keep this habit.
i live in Australia we never use the dryer.
Really interesting ideas. I'm on my way to be more and more frugal. It makes lot of sense. Regards from Spain.
Frugal and Proud!
New subscriber. I was looking up frugal and I wanted educate myself. I do alot of these things. I really enjoy this video
I need to incorporate a few of these changes into my life. Thank you for the tips
Greetings from Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Frugal people begin each day with a good early morning cry. Im frugal so i cant go out and party on the weekends with my friends, im happy 2 sit at home with my 2 best friends MY CAT & MY LOATHING. Its awesome. Love u dana!
Frugal is taking one tomato seed and turning it into several plants by rooting cuttings😁
Frugal living pays off. 66 and 73 and trying to spend all the savings now by going on fancy trips but still have very fond memories of the family camping adventures. Everyday life continues to be relatively frugal. It is hard to be wasteful when thrift is ingrained in your lifestyle.
I can count on one hand how many times a year I use my dryer. Line dry all the way.
+TalesFromAPolkCountyGirl Nice job!!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻😀
Down to earth and totally resonates with me
We do many of these things. My family loves to be at home. We don't eat out much. We are entertained by simple things. We do go on vacation once a year but we go frugal even then. We get a condo so we don't have to buy food out the whole time. Our last condo was $55 a night with full kitchen.
funny how being frugal is closely related to being eco-friendly
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I don’t get tire of hearing this video over and over, thank you 🙏
I had my car for almost 18 years. I took good care of it. I would still have it if someone didn't hit me and totaled it.
Jenny Conklin yes old cars are great I like that cheaper to maintain and the older style cars have more space.Insurance is more cheaper and compact car is cheaper too.
Mine is 26 years old, Peugeot 205, what an engine, I love it, car is family

Jenny Conklin I'm planning to do this. My Toyota Corolla has 135k miles. Curious to see how long I can make it last
How many mileage?
Yes I am going to get into home hobbies, gardens, making sewing- grocery bags pillow cases. I will try a no spend month
CHSwildcats19 Genius 😜
My dad has done this my entire life. One time i was short on college tuition and he brought out the Kenmore water jug and told me to start rolling lol. It covered the $300 or so that I couldn't come up with.
Love it!! We do all of this :) After watching your video, i really want to do a camping trip this summer!!
