I recently had a few flights with HK Express and they did me dirty. 2 different scams. The customer service for this airline is atrocious. In the video I will update you on these scams and hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else.

There is no glitch. It's by design. Shame on them. Thanks for exposing them.
I believe that too
Thanks for the heads up Greenie ,… I’ll avoid that airline like the plaque
Yea. They are shifty
Thank you for exposing the scam. I will never fly with them.
They are scammers
Wow that's crazy. I would seriously be pissed. Thanks Greeny
Everytime I think about it I am. If the were in America I’d be having the attorney general and FTC looking into this
What did we learn? Always check your dates before paying. The middle name yes that's BS
Yea. It’s set up on purpose to make our life difficult and steam money
Always check
Amazing what companies try to get away with. Agree with you 100% - disgusting behaviour. Scamming right in our faces. I checked today, and it's STILL the same error. I could see many folks making that mistake.
They won’t fix. Make big money like that
Me and some friends just flew to Thailand and Vietnam. American Airlines canceled my friends flight from San Antonio to Dallas. They had to drive there five hours.
Then a flight from Phuket to Bangkok was delayed so I would miss my flight to Vietnam. I had to buy a whole new ticket for me and my wife. In Vietnam, our flight was delayed eight hours coming back to Bangkok. Getting very tired dealing with airlines now.
I’m so sick of these airlines screwing people over.
Great video. It is a scam and it has happened to us.
Stuff like this aggravates me, they can't make money by being honest.
Not enough the honest way. Gotta be greedy
Scammers' why are they allowed to deliberately steal our mony. Any one else would go to jail. Well done greeny for exposing these thief's
They will say glitch. I know it’s on purpose or they would give me a refund the next day when I called. They are greedy
Wow what a scam ! Well do for shouting that out to us 👊
Yep. If not scam but glitch they would have refunded my money. I noticed instantly
Oh Greeny… Thanks for the heads up. I work for an airline and most of my trips are on id tickets and that is completely a different world when/if you don’t know what you are doing. Luckily the aftermath is not usually that costly… but yet it pisses you off to lose money every time.
Thanks for sharing this - I concider it as caring about us, your audience. So, thank you Sir!
Not much money. The point though A bit shady when they make you jump through hoop to try to remedy
The 'computer says no!' scam. Thanks for sharing Greeny.
lol. They know all
Never flown with them. Now never will.
Not now anyway. Glad I can help
Good job on calling them out. All we can do is not fly on them and I won't.
No customer service
Great video, thx for heads up.
No problem. Everyone should know to be careful of them
Thank you for sharing. Very informative.
Appreciate it
Thanks for this Greeny. I'll be sure never to fly this airline. Perhaps you might send a link of this video to your credit card company so they can see the whole thing in detail?
A good rule of thumb is to book airline tickets to or in Asia using your exact same name that is on your passport
Airlines often have weird conditions and restrictions in their small print that can be missed. It could be that HKE have a condition that says no stopover allowed on a multi city booking, meaning if you want to do an onward trip leg you have to book that separately.
My own habit is to read and double/triple check every item on the booking on the payment page before I pull the trigger and hit PAY. I’m super cautious because a minute spent double checking there saves a lot of hassle if I rush and get it wrong. I EXPECT errors and look for them!
Good advice. They are tricky AF
Thank you Greeny! This exposes an interesting cultural business phenomena present if much of Asia, which is "if they can cheat you and you do not catch them, it's your fault." I've exprienced this to some degree since the early 90's traveling throughout Asia and the Middle East. It's certainly not in 100% of transactions. But there's a large cultural block that do business this way since being opportunistic is a large part of Asian and Middle Eastern business culture. Oddly, personal interactions do not usually display the same degree of bias, at least in my limited experience.
Yep. It’s quite a business model
If you haven't flown with an airline previously, conducting your own due diligence is a no brainer - especially for someone like yourself who travels frequently. (Especially considering safety record, etc with low cost airlines) Booking multiple trips.... a big mistake - why? There is no cost (or any other) advantage - if you read the terms you'll likely see in the event you miss your first flight, any subsequent flights paid for on the same booking number are forfeited - so even if you manage to jump onto another flight & make it in time - you are screwed, or if the flight is a number of days later - still, you are screwed.
Yes, its your fault if you didn't check all the deets before you hit the purchase button. The good news is you've alerted others as a result of your bad experience. PS: That middle name thing....dodgy as! Thanks for posting this informative video for the new players out there.
Dealing with A.I. is also a scam
Yea. I had a great conversation with Bolts AI a few weeks ago. No follow up on my complaint there. Big companies don’t care about customers any longer so I will announce my concerns
When booking with an airline make sure you read the rules. I recently booked a flight with Cebu pacific. It had a first and last name but says name must appear like it is on your passport so I put my first and middle name under my first name.
I booked Viet jet last week. Asked for both. This airline doesn’t cause they want the extra money cheap bastards
I'm in Thailand and am routinely referred to as Mr.(middle initial) (full last name) and (full legal first name). I can't remember but my airline tickets may have been the same and of course that doesn't match my passport.
Finnair does the same thing first and last name only. In a lot of countries, they don't use middle names so their forms don't have include a space for them. As someone else mentioned, put your first and middle name in the first name box.
I think I remember reading something about this on Reddit, the whole middle name thing. The customer service thing I just chalk up to companies not wanting to pay people and even the people they pay to talk-- those people don't want to talk to you about anything. They're just going to wait you out.
Last, it seems to me that some of the sites for asian airlines are really dated (ANA and JAL for me).
Definitely sub par customer service
Greeny is doing the Lords work 🙏
I hate scammers
If that can happen to a seasoned traveler like you, it can happen to any one. Thanks for the info, I will be more careful for my future travels. Stay safe, God bless you
I mean I put the dates in. That shouldn’t happen
I can probably find a software glitch in about every international airline website. Curiosity had me signup/register and create a profile. I download the Hong Kong express app and could not register using there app. (trbl using USA mobile number- software issue) after numerous attempts I had to go online to complete. I noted, the registration did specifically ask for first and middle name that matches your passport. Also note the mobile app for Hong Kong Express doe not have an option for multicity, probably not commonly used. Granted that app's are more limited. I cant agree its a scam but a software glitch that never gets addressed. Seems the airlines puts all responsibility to the passenger regardless. I am not defending the airline these glitch's are there, given poor web development. Also been a follower of yours since you arrived in Thailand, always look forward to your videos.
Agree. I recently booked Viet Jet. They ask. If HK does t ask they shouldn’t charge 44 to add it
HK Express is owned by Cathay Pacific. Send an email to their customer complaints department.
I’m past that. HK didnt want to deal with it I’m taking other means
I went to Cathay website feed back customer service ,complaints. That's as far as I could get you either do a WhatsApp or phone call. I even clicked on lost baggage. It kept going back to choose feedback. Ugh...
Interesting clip out of CNN this morning talking about the worlds best airlines... a clip from this article, "AirAsia was once again crowned the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline - repeating an achievement it has made every year since 2010."
They are usually my go to. Only issue most flight are out of DMK which is a pain for me to get to
I’ve never booked a multi-city excursion, but this is good information! Guess you have to either book each segment individually; or use a reputable travel agency that you can go back to if there’s an issue.
I have had issues with reservations because my passport shows my first name and middle initial; not my middle name. Always make sure your passport and reservation match!
No issues with other airlines. I just tried it on united. You can do 9 cities 9 different dates. No scam crap
Holy crap Greeny! Good to know. 😊
Thanks
Really useful info.thank you............
Appreciate you watching
What a scam job … thanks for the intel .I usually do all my flights like that separately if possible. Like one trip at a time to multiple cities .
This was more convenient but apparently not. I just flew all over Europe last fall doing multi destination like this on other airlines. No issues. This is some BS
Very shady! I’ll be sure to avoid that airline. I frikin hate this new way of doing business, through an app, with no real person available to solve problems (that THEY have created!). I guess they figure that you’ll get so irritated trying to get help that you’ll just give up. I’ve encountered that several times with all 3 of the airlines that dominate in Mexico. It’s the antithesis of customer service.
Yep. They just want us to give up. Unfortunately for them I have no life lol 😂
Something similar happened a couple years back with my wife with two different airlines when she arrived in China. She was going home for a visit and when she landed in Shanghai she needed to make a connecting flight when she got to the gate she was refused entry because the airline booking procedure did not put in her middle name. So she had to buy a ticket locally from Shanghai to her destination inside China. After the second occurrence what I did was I combined her first and middle name into the first block of the name and this eliminated the problem because her full name was then printed on the ticket. But this cost her over $100 each time they refused her due to the airline's booking process error.
Before corvid I booked flights and payed extra "Flexi" that I could modify dates if necessary, as it turned out and for the first time in my life this is what I needed to happen, turns out to adjust dates a few months into the future they where going to charge me almost the same fare again in essence paying for the flight twice...I burned the flights and location.
Business model Stick it to the customers
Have you tried notifying them of this discrepancy? Also notify the country agency overseeing that airline. If that does not work, notify the major media outlets. You have evidence and that is powerful.
I called the immediately. They don’t car it’s a big money maker
The thing is,the website will assume its one long flight from Bangkok to Taiwan interrupted by a stopover at Hong Kong. What you should have done is book one there-back return from Bangkok to Hong Kong . 1 return flight, then print out tickets. Then book your second return flights from Hong Kong to Taiwan [and return]. That way should be more straightforward for booking.I suspect this is is just how airlines operate!
This video is so helpful. The name thing is a pain. I checked via Google Flights and went to Hong Kong Express and if you use a laptop you will see the middle name example Surname (Last Name)*English name on passport
e.g. Chan
Given Name (First and Middle Name)*English name on passport
e.g. Tai Man
I use a laptop as much as I can due to vision issues. If you see the ⓘ hover over it for more info or if you see a red * hover over that. I can't check it on my Android but someone here can.
This website trick on mobile and computer. I thinks is intentional
I had it happen to me before, especially with "BUDGET" airlines. Sometimes the problem with multiple destination trips is they do not fly on certain days and it defaults. Maybe that was what happened.
I tested it multiple different dates. All the same
I have experienced the name change situation when my first name was left out of the ticket, and they required a small fee to change it. On another occasion the budget airline staff member attempted to short-change me when paying a luggage extra weight fee in Hanoi. I would guess it's a common predicament many budget travelers have experienced and if you happened to make small talk with fellow passengers they'd likely have a similar story. I have read google reviews of budget airline offices and some are airing their various grievances there.
This industry filled with less than upstanding folks
It’s amazing in how sometimes it’s so seamless but then other times it’s an adventure. I think they know they can get many customers at least one time through the conveniently bureaucratic and often unclear systems
thank YOU, we need to all stick together I will never fly this scam airline
They are not very customer friendly in my experience
If "I know I'm doing it right" why would I double check?
Well, I've never flown with that airline, but I've worked with that "perfect person" many times, and if it's important I've learned to double check their work, because they miss things and won't catch a problem until it blows up.
You would think automated website not gonna change the date you enter. Live and learn
@@GreenyTravels Honestly when I check flight prices (not actually booked though), I notice the dates often flip flop around. But Greyhound and Amtrak are far worse, if they don't just lock up.
I'm a cheapskate who just assumes low quality so I double check.
Had the same and other similar issues with Volaris (Mexico Discount Airline). Reservation not showing pre-paid bag so you have to pay again more at the airport, return flight the same day as your departure, no middle name on passport issue.
I’ve disputed CC charges only to have return flight cancelled or held hostage until I paid again.
Take a photo or screenshot of 2nd bag upon buying. Some airlines also have the decency to send an email. But better take a photo.
Industry sources greedy. They probably hold seminars on how to get the most cash out of us.
It’s a glitch but they don’t care. Never flown that airline. I will say my favorite airline is Cathay Pacific though
I explained it to their English speaking representative on the phone but they acted like I was speaking German
Can't stand bad websites and poor follow through from major companies. I can imagine how many people this adversely effects every day. I hear ya man, hope the CC company refunds this for you.
Not that much money but it the point so I will be a pain
@@GreenyTravels Agreed, it's the principle.
United Airlines uses them for connecting flights to BKK. I didn't trust that so booked another carrier without code share.
Agoda arbitrarily changed a hotel booking date from what I had entered in my initial global search. I have to watch those jerks like a hawk at each stage of the booking.
On one TPE carrier they require middle names be appended to first name, but they don't tell you on the booking page. Fortunately I know the drill from other TPE carriers.
BTW they will often cut other Asians some slack.
I guess we better double and triple check these companies
Hi Greeny. I think this was a case of you moving too fast when you did your booking. Even on your screen record, I don't think you noticed, but when you clicked on that second date and opened the calendar, it activated the *first* date field.
When booking Multi City trips you have to select the dates like you would a hotel booking - the first date you select would be your "check in" (Departure) and on that same screen/calendar you select the "check out" (Return) date - when you want your next flight. What you did was just select a single date, so it assumed that's what you wanted. Additionally, where you showed the 9/25 date for the return trip, you could have clicked on the next date in that row (or any date for that matter) and it would have shown you those flights.
I'm not trying to be a pain in the rear, I do genuinely enjoy your content; and have for a while - but it's happened to the best of us - I think this was just one of those things that we have to remember to pay attention to. As for their customer service though - that's unacceptable.
You're right. That's exactly what he did.
I just messed around on the United site. No problem. When you put dates it they shouldn’t change it.
Hi Greeny. My daughter's first names is Maixxxxx, Schxxxx
So you would call the second one "middle name"
But I checked again her passport before posting this.
There is no "middle name" field in her passport (European passport). You can verify yourself.
Only "First names" or "prénoms" in french (with an s).
So since those airline staff see all kinds of passports, better put the two in the first name(s) field separated by a coma unless there is a middle name field. That's what we did in our trip to the US last month, because the website asked for "exact and complete writing as in the passport"
Interesting.
Awesome video
Appreciate it AJ
I've heard that about the middle name crap. They(Asian airlines) always use the middle name. But because Asians don't have middle names so they don't add that in their web. As far as the date thing, I'm an ex airline computer engineer.... I think they're not scamming on purpose. They programmed their web site to handle to sell trips. One trip at a time. You tried to book 2 at the same time. I didn't look closely at the webpage you showed but they "assumed" you were going to Taiwan. You might have to book one flight, BKK to HKG pay it and then book the other HKG to TPE and pay that. Based on what I saw their date functions were built to some you were transferring. 🤟
Yea. I see that but I put the correct dates in. I’ve booked many multi country flight like this. Never a problem with other airlines
@@GreenyTravels better programmers 🤣 I've sold airline tickets and programmed many things. I didn't think they'd do it on purpose. Just didn't think it through on their date function. No matter what you do flying into HKG and going to another destination, their always going to "assume" it's the same day on the Web page. Sounds like you'd have to have 2 bookings
@@GreenyTravels I just checked it myself lol...
Problem is their definition of multi-city means a connecting flight. Not 2 flights what you wanted. There's no way to book 2 flights for 2 different dates. It's a no frills airline that only allows one booking segment. You need 2 booking numbers, not a multi-city connecting flight. Lost in translation 😂
A few weeks ago I booked two separate tickets from Bangkok to Shanghai and Shanghai to Seoul on China Eastern ... very stressful as the English version of the website still uses Chinese in some parts of it. Anyway, they clearly say on the web page passenger's name must exactly match the passport name. I think you've just got used to certain airlines and when using Chinese airlines you need to play by their rules.
Greeny... yup a Scam for sure. BUT... If you charged all the fees on a major Credit Card... Why could you not just make a fraud report and have the charges cancelled/reviewed? Or did they require cash?
Oh I did. We will see what they do. They make it very difficult to submit the pertinent information
Thumbs up 👍 Greeny….
same on the Singapore airlines app. very frustrating.
I just checked united. Works fine. Can choose 9 destinations
Its not the only airline with the middle name problem. Last name is last name ONLY. Everything else goes on as your first name. Even Singair does this.
$44 to add 5 letter. They don’t ask because they are greedy and want to get easy money. They know if have to pay or you can’t leave
I just hopped on the website and tried to replicate this and sure enough it happened on both multi city and round trip flights. I would never fly with these guys.
Sneaky bastards
I have never booked on cheap airlines,I alwsys book on big liners I have never ever had any problem in over 55 years of flying.Only thing to do is quit booking on cheap airlines to save a few pennies.
I usually use Air Asia or Viet jet for these short flight with no issues
That's a profit center for then. Should be fined. Would you fly Cathay pacific since they are affiliated? I was once looking at flights to Japan with ANA and they booked my flight without me checking out. I had to jump through all types of hurdles to get a refund. Wonder if it was done on purpose
I wouldn’t be surprised if
Just eat the loss. It's a learning experience. Next time book two separate flights and you won't be confused.
I wasn’t confused. I got scammed. I put the right dates in. I don’t care about the money but definitely gonna expose this on my channel because that’s what do
They may have scammed you out of $44, but letting your audience know of their dodgy business practices will cost them more than that $44, rest assured. When flying to Taiwan, where I once lived, fly EVA. No fuss and straight forward. Thai is similar in price, at least when I was going back and forth between Taiwan and Thailand.
No to EVA. My wife and I had to fly to China for her father's funeral and the dates got changed and when we contacted EVA they refused to change the dates unless we paid a massive charge. For a funeral. So no, we will never be using EVA again. We went with Cathay Pacific and had exceptionally good service and a good price.
I’ve had good experiences with Eva. But you never know. The industry as a whole dooms to be getting less and less customer friendly
Of course the "error" in these programming snafus (which is how these fly by nights get away with this shit... saving face) are never in the favor of the customer.... always in favor of the airline.
Make a different reservation for each leg of your trip. I always put my first and middle name together with a space between them in the first name field of any reservation I make. Then its exactly as shown in my Passport. Learn from your bad experience
I’ve done multi city trip with other airlines with no issues. Should not have been an issue
Hi Greeny here is my advice anytime an airline defraud you as in this case, I will pickup the phone and call my credit card company and request a full refund after explaining the scam and invoke the purchase protection feature that comes with all credit cards, this always work. I avoid contacting the airline unless it is necessary, in writing would be a better option as you can present evidence to the credit card company. Good luck
I flew AirAsia unless I don't have the option when traveling within Southeast Asia. And I avoid vietjet like a plague.
I use both of them. No issues
Greeny, when booking a flight. If it doesn't ask for middle name, I always put my first and middle name where it asks for first name.
Obtw we booked round trip tickets with them 2019, no problem. ( cnx to Hong Kong )
You know in my air Asia profile it only had my first and middle name. Never had an issue. I went ahead and changed it anyway
Just booked a flight today but the app didn't ask for middle names too but I put my middle names in first name section. I know already this is tricky.
Good idea.
If you mess with Greenny you'll get put on blast
I tried to get refund on the phone. 2 can play the game. Maybe I can get 1M views. Share with all your friends 😂
Chinese made , Chines products and Chinese attitudes.
Something a miss
I have heard of the middle name scam. I always use credit cards for flights American Express will take your side. Edit. Oh you did.
Bank of America. We will see
Clearly a scam, but they are assuring that nobody will fly with them twice
Sketchy business model
I got exactly the same know where in thailand
Everything booked
And yess the second flight
Not correct date and first name !!
So have to pay a extra 278€
😢
😡 😡
Maybe best to pay a little more on a well known airline. Thanks.
I had the same middle name problem leaving Bangkok
It’s fine. They should add it if they need to not charge $44 to do it. 5 letters. Pure greed especially when they don’t specifically request it in the 1st place
Just post your screen recording on TH-cam and send them the link to the TH-cam video
I’m not done. Will make shorts and reels for all Tik Tok, TH-cam instagram facebook.
Forgot...would it be safer to use a travel agent?
They still have those?
Not a Scam. I see where you went wrong, just did the booking myself. Always check your dates.
Date shouldn’t change. How it not a scam? You think it’s not intentional for this exact thing to happen. I reported it a month ago. They haven’t fixed because they make money 💰
@@GreenyTravels See yepimliberty's comment below also under video. " You moved too fast" . Hence why you must check and double check.
Needs wider circulation. Ideally get one of the airline reviewers on it. Wont be using them!
I will keep pushing this one out
I guess you should report this item of a malfunction website to the IATA, which HK Express is a member from. If the IATA will tells them off, maybe something will happen.
Why book flights on an airline with such poor reviews? 🤔🤔
Short flight to HK. Didnt look till after this BS
HG Express is very safe airline but crooks. But you will fly on anything wont you ? No fear. Would you fly on Laos or Cambodian airlines??
I was in some funky little planes in the Philippines.
Why didn’t you call your credit card company to cancel immediately.
What a scam
First time I’ve had an issue with this
Let your subs call them to make their ears bleed.
lol. That would be cool
Look into Thai Computer Crimes Act
Yea, sketch.
Dirty dogs 🐕
You get what you play for you want to fly cheap cheap it is you want quality you pay for it unfortunately in this case you paid for it later and didn't get it the lesson here is flight First Rate airlines not budget Airlines
I do voice to text that's why there's errors in the grammar and punctuation for all those wanting to complain about that
Maybe next time I will charter a private jet.
Sorry, multi destination is always same day transfer to the next city. You want to hang out in a city for a few hours then bail. If you're leaving a different day always always always book a separate ticket from city B to city C. The website works as programmed.
This is not true at all. I’ve done it with other airlines
Just went on my united app. Checked multi destination. You can book up to 9. All different days. This greedy company knows what they are doing. Anyway to get a few extra bucks
You didnt check the dates! Now your moaning about it and calling it a scam. More fool you for not double checking the dates.
If I were you, I'd delete this video... you can get in big trouble.
I won’t be in Hong Kong for a bit
