    Michael Golden fostered an entire generation of comic book artists in the early 90's and his influence is still felt today. I have DVD's, books, anything that has to do with Golden and still could never get a idea of who he was but your TH-cam video is by far the best I have ever seen on this eccentric man.

      Thank you so much. I spend so long on these and it's comments like this that really make it worth while. Golden is one of the unmentioned men who make up the DNA of the image founders and like 99% of the guys that they worshipped like Art Adams and stuff. I've spent years admiring Golden's work but it was really interesting getting to the bottom of his reputation and work behind the scenes. I'm so happy people seem to be enjoying this one, put a lot of TLC into! Thanks again for the kind words as well as for checking this out and especially for taking the time to leave a comment really helps out the channel a ton

      People tend to give credit to Arthur Adams without realizing Adams himself was a Golden clone!

      Well thank you for your research of Golden. He is one of my all time favorite artists and especially the connected he has with the Gen X comic book artist and reader. You can tell his influence obviously with Art Adams along with McFarlane with that cartoon like style that didn't start taking shape over at Marvel until the late 80's and blew up in the 90's. I don't think later fans understand this but back when Golden was drawing The Micronauts NOBODY drew like him. It was the mighty Marvel way like Buscema or Trimpe or Romita and Golden did not fit the bill. Here is a good example, look at how Frank Miller was drawing back in 79 compared to his later years when he had more artistic freedom. That might be one of the reasons why Shooter didn't like his work.@@JerkComic

      That means a lot. I spent the better part of 2 years pouring over everything I could find to try and put together the best and most comprehensive overview of him that I could. Shooter's treatment to Golden seems to echo his treatment to contemporary fellow Micronauts artist Pat Broderick: "Jim Shooter had all but informed me that, in his opinion, my art sucked and that I would never get another raise there, regardless of how well my books were selling."
    Broderick has made known his liking of Golden's work

    Great and thorough document, really enlightening. I had the fortune to see Mr. Golden in 1983 (I think) at the Houston comic con, where he spoke as a panel member of artists. He definitely came across as an arrogant and jaded person, saying that he disliked the comic business and actually discouraged any artists in the audience from entering into the comics field. This of course was hard for many of us to reconcile, especially seeing his work and finding it hard to believe that someone with such a craft disliked doing it. He also said then that he was doing graphic art and design more, and comics not so much. One thing that he said that was hard for me to believe was that he no longer did pencil layouts, and just started drawing straight into the page with ink. This flipped my wig then, thinking that it was either then sign of a savant, or a lot of hokum. Now I think that he was just doing a bit of self aggrandizement, in keeping with his snarky-ness at the time. I really loved his work on Micronauts, that i got from the spinner rack as they came out, and it influenced my ideas of form and composition greatly. Looking forward to seeing part 2!

      First off, thank you so much for not only taking the time to check this out but leave a comment - means a lot and helps out the channel more than you know! As per Golden, yeah he definitely comes off as disliking the industry, because, well - I think he does. He never got the respect or treatment he deserved and I think he went through a bad stretch of self-aggrandizing and getting a big head that he didn't like and completely turned on the industry as a result. TBF, I also feel like Marvel is just a disorganized mess in a lot of cases and that teamed with the length it takes Golden to get stuff done it was just a recipe for headaches and heartache. And re layouts - if he said he didn't even pencil at all anymore, yup he was full of it. Now, bear in mind, the man's "roughs" are like gestural figures and by all accounts he'll spend a DAY thinking about what a page or image is going to look like, another one or two doing research and reference work, and only THEN put pencil to paper so that he doesn't have to "draw things twice". From everything I've heard he does ALSO work just like Kirby essentially printing a page out from his brain starting at the top and working towards the bottom or vice versa - complete savant level stuff that I don't think needs exaggeration...

    40:33 - I was unaware Heath was an influence on Golden, but the art similarities have always struck me. On Showcase Presents Haunted Tank, Heath’s b&w work looks a lot like Golden’s: explosions, tech, storytelling, etc. I’m still watching and listening to this epic episode, Jerk! Incredible effort. Thank you! 👍

      Yeah Golden doesn't talk about anyone as being a big part of his work but both P Craig Russel and Heath pop up a LOT. I guess Heath was a major influence on his use of the brush which he tried to use almost exclusively for years. Was interesting to learn about as it totally tracks but I wouldn't have put it together myself either.

    Great research! I was in middle school when Micronauts #1 came out; it made a huge impression on me mostly due to Golden’s art. I never invested the effort into the various other licensed property books (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, GI Joe, ROM, Battlestar Galactica, and Godzilla]. For years a cover by Golden justified buying an otherwise pedestrian comic. I missed the chance to get the Micronauts artist edition, but got a copy of the more recent “Michael Golden Marvel” artist edition. I read everything I could ever find about that part of comics history, so I was not expecting to learn so much anew in your video. Cheers for doing a great job!

      @JerkComic  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah I used to pick up a LOT of books just because they had a Golden cover, sadly, no room for such things these days but he's still one of the greats. And yeah, I missed out on the Micronauts AE myself. It's one of the few I was going to pick up but didn't realize it would only be in print for a few months and now the prices are WAY beyond what I could ever hope to afford. It's a shame as I'd love to see that book up close, maybe someday, right? I am going to snag a copy of the new AE book as soon as I get the bumper back on my car and the hospital bills paid off... so hopefully it sticks around in print a little longer than Micronauts did, lmao. In the meantime at least i can oggle Heritage hi res scans haha

    • @JerkComic
      @JerkComic  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah he constantly says that he had little to no access to that stuff as a kid and only read like Disney and Little Lulu books. Was interesting coming across the interview from the 70s where he was a little more open about reading comics as a kid as well as talking to his teacher. Part 2 should be done in a few days, maybe a week just editing visuals on it now.

      I was doing a lot of art but that was mostly because of money issues - I much prefer working on the channel than drawing all the time, I'm getting too old for that, haha. I'll likely have a book out sometime this year but I spent some time in the hospital again recently and had some pretty bad financial issues this last year. it costs a lot to do these videos because I have to buy all this research material and I spend all this time and I just had to take a break sadly. Thankfully I'm back, this is going to be a 4 part piece at least with a Danzig skull special to cap it off and then we're on to newer stuff from there. Thanks for sticking with me and I hope the new stuff is up to snuff because I realized one thing when I was working on this above all else, I was rusty, haha!

      I’ve met him a few times throughout the years and I think I annoyed him once when I questioned his most recent style. He went into a small rant on the nature of the evolving comic industry and how he does what works best for business because at the end of the day it’s a commission. He is a strange cat, but I loved his old stuff. A legend for sure. Thank you for all you do my friend!

      I don't know if he ever was as full of himself as he thinks he was. He's a super sure of himself dude and comes off as somewhat jaded in a lot of cases, and he definitely KNOWS he's good you know what I mean? But he's not egotistical from what I've seen. I think he just got some blow back over the fanzine interview and a few other things early on and decided that he was the problem. Which he partly is, but I don't think to the extent or in the ways that he necessarily thinks.

    Getting the Micronauts as it came out, the shift from Golden to Chaykin’s breakdowns heavily inked by Milgrom was jarring. The Golden covers kept the momentum going for me enough to keep buying until Broderick came on board. Despite the flat inking of Bulandi, I like the Broderick stuff. After that, I was out, only to occasionally to drop in.

      I was always a sucker for Guice so I got down on that, and I'm legit obsessed with Chaykin but have NEVER gotten into Al Milgrom's heavy handed work either. It was definitely jarring to say the least. His covers helped, but they almost made me feel robbed and let down at a certain point when you'd open it haha. I haven't read the entire run in a LONG time, looking forward to the new omnibus so I can see how it all chains together and flows for the first time in 35 years!

      I think in a lot of ways he was kind of built for Euro comix especially. It's a shame he never made the leap or was invited as I think his art would have likely clicked with them too. That's an interesting thought that I hadn't considered until now. Had he ever been able to make the leap he would likely have thrived. He belonged working with people like Toppi and Druillet in my opinion and I did always find it weird he never mixed or hobnobbed with any of those guys that I know of. He dislikes the comics field enough I don't know if he ever gave it a second thought tbh though

    Its has some good moments after he left but it was never the same ..the covers he did were just a reminder of that, Rubinstein is a great artist in his own right. It’s always seemed strange to me how he feel about Micronauts considering how good it was ! It’s also a little petulant to leave considering the direction The book actually went after he left ..

    • @JerkComic
      @JerkComic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tbf he took the series because no supes and then in less than a dozen issues that's the direction they went knowing Golden hated them, if he hadn't left who knows how long that original Karza arc would have gone on too. Plus we got Kelley Jones and Butch Guice art after so at least there's that haha. Thanks for checking this out and hope you liked it! @@JerkComic it did go supes for a few but then it went so far away from that… frozen planets , Bugs planet can’t spell that one .. other than the Xmen cross over that was separate they really stayed in the microverse ..with new characters Devil and Huntarr .. so maybe it was just a misunderstanding.. he didn’t do the Annual with the FF .. and to be honest as much as I admire Ditko for him pioneering work .. it was impossible to see the Micronauts in that primitive manner after seeing Goldens layouts

    • @JerkComic
      @JerkComic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bobbyhulll8737Well Ditko wasn't really putting in much effort by that point as he was being forced to work in licensed properties and lower tier crap after being at the top of the pecking order before Lee and him had their falling out and he left for Charlton. And I don't think it was a misunderstanding at all. Shooter and Mantlo wanted to integrate the book into the MCU proper and it didn't really play so they had to peel all that back and figure out how to recenter the book, which they did to an extent but I don't think they ever really got it balanced back out. It was a weird one but there was some fun stuff from the rest of that series if you were kind of forgiving about weird fills and non-sequiturs that didn't go anywhere at certain points.
