Mermaids are beautiful mythical creatures. In my opinion its hard to translate them to regular playline fashion dolls. If you go with hard plastic tails they have limited interchangability, flexibility, and often have the awkward tailfin/stand gag you mentioned. And with fabric tails they often arent form fitting and have printed on bright glittery fabrics with flowers and such, and fake scales. I dont think toy companies have figured out how to make a doll with essentially no lower half as fabulous, accessorized, and detailed as say a Rainbow High doll, who is thuroughly accesorized from head to toe with a second outfit to boot. Perhaps if mermaze mermaids wasnt relying on the color change gag they could find something that would work. I really like the design of the pj dolls. Its a shame we'll probably never see them

I agree with you 100 percent. That's why I kinda just look at mermaze like they're art dolls almost? I always take their jackets off , put them on their stands, and admire them. I have kishiko, shellnelle, and all of Winter waves except the blonde..Gwen I think. I knew they were going to get canceled soon, but I REALLY wanted those Slumber Party dolls. I'm in love with the designs, and sleepovers are one of my favorite themes.

I agree with all of your points! Now fast forward a whole year later, and now the Slumber Party dolls have been released! Only downside though is that they were sold on some weird 3rd party website in the UK that doesn't even ship internationally (The Entertainer is the name I think). What are your thoughts on those? Personally, I feel like MGA was just clearing out leftover unused stock for the Slumber Party girls, and we won't ever get them here in America. I had to buy Monroe off eBay for triple the price! I probably won't get the others, but I'm happy to have at least ONE of the Slumber Party dolls! Which makes me so sad, because I've been obsessed with Mermaze Mermaidz since they were leaked. And I faithfully bought them all in stores when I had the cash for them! Feels like a slap in the face from MGA to not make them more accessible for true fans to enjoy! I understand that they didn't do too well on shelves, but honestly they should've given us the option to purchase the dolls from their website at the very least! Sorry for rambling, I'm just really passionate about this topic! 💞😭💞

@@brittneycofey8753 here are my thoughts, when i first saw the dolls in mermaze mermaidz i looked at kishiko and she looks like a BARBIE DOLL I BOUGHT A LONG TIME AGO! KISHIKO LOOKS LIKE A KNOCKOFF FROM A BARBIE DOLL I BOUGHT, the barbie had the same hair with a purple jacket and white mop things all over the jacket and a tank top that said "LOVE" and the same skin color, and KISHIKO over here, has a blue top, SAME HAIR, SAME SKIN AND A JACKET! I FEEL LIKE IM THE ONLY ONE THAT KNOWS ABOUT THIS..

It's quite sad because Mermaid High was said to have ended due to competition with Mermaze yet now Mermaze may end. Though I love the detail, I wouldn't have wanted these if I were a kid because you could not remove their tails. With that high of a price point I would have wanted to swap their clothes.

  • @Iroh12345
    @Iroh12345 ปีที่แล้ว +59

I recently got Orra for a heavily discounted price and I was honestly happy with her. She's super pretty, feels heavy and her hair is very soft. I would've never, ever bought her for full price though. I think MGA dropped the ball by releasing the line with very blatant issues (no stands and tails not working as stands, the dolls not being able to sit, Riviera losing a ton of hair, Harmonique's tail chipping, no knee articulation). They probably thought they could easily coast through thanks to the succes of their other doll lines, but consumers are not easily fooled. You can't ask a premium for dolls with so many issues which both limit play value for kids and annoy collectors. Besides all that, I think MGA made the wrong decision to blend fantasy with realism like they did with Mermaze. Either make them 100% fantasy mermaids, or make them regular girls who can be transformed into mermaids. The weird thematic choices (hot drinks, puffer jackets and a car for mermaids permanently living in the ocean?) were just confusing. Fantasy has never been MGA's strong suit anyway.
I hope the line isn't cancelled because it certainly has potential. If they cancel it now it just underlines the fact that MGA probably never really cared for this line to begin with as they haven't even tried resolving some of the most blatant issues. At least they got the competition out of the way by taking over Mermaid High's niche for a while -- that's probably all they really hoped to do.

"Riveria losing a ton of hair" Oh so that wasn't just my Riveria then. She's the only Mermaze I have. Between the hair loss and the price I decided it wasn't worth getting any more.

I noticed prices falling rather steeply here in Germany, which is on one hand a good thing since we even get the new Rainbow High series with just one outfit for the same price as the releases before - and we can be happy if we have a way to get those dolls here without importing them anyway - but it also made me wonder if they were selling badly. I instantly got Riviera when they came out here because I adore her rock girl design but she loses an insane amount of hair. I barely dare to touch her. I also have Kishiko, both in regular and winter, and Nera from the winter line but I left those in the box so far.
Overall I really like the series but I saw a lot of people who disliked the modern looks and strange fin designs. I wouldn't want to see the series go though, I hope they might work it over and give it another chance.

I personally felt that the Mermaze Mermaidz dolls were overpriced for what they were, and it was kind of unclear as to whether or not they were fashion dolls or water-play dolls in the marketing. Nera looked cool though, but I wasn't willing to get her at full price, and I skipped getting her because I am much more focused on collecting Shadow High currently.
Probably my favorite moment from the webisodes was when Nera described herself using the terms 'prep' and 'goth', because it really reminded me of Ebony Dementia Raven Way from the infamous Harry Potter trollfiction, "My Immortal" for some reason. I am still wondering if MGA meant to reference that specific trollfiction or if it was just a coincidence.

FINALLY!! 😈My curses have finally hit the Mermaze Mermaidz brand in order to avenge the cancellation of Mermaid High! MOUAHAHAH!!!! 😆😂😆😂😂(I'm kidding of course!)
Although I've never been a big fan of this line of "influencer mermaids" dolls, they had certain aspects that made them a bit enjoyable. But I'm surprised that the brand seems already canceled in less than ONE year. Yeah, nothing new on TH-cam and socials since December but I was gegnually assuming that MGA was taking a break for January since there's no new Rainbow High episode either But you're right, there are still RH filler content on TH-cam and not for MM. More bizarre: the French TH-cam channel has not finished to post the webisodes and the last upload was a month ago. I looked a few channels in different languages and it looks like all are stuck at webisode 11 too. Kind a shame because the 3 last webisodes in English were better since they abandoned all that Color Change and influencer stories non-sense to fiiiinally focus on the mysterious mermaid that threatens Mystic City. Too bad it ends with a cliffhanger!
4:05 Same. 😅 Still can't make the difference between Winter Kishiko and Winter Harmonique even after watching the webisodes twice.
5:48 If I can recognize ONE quality to Mermaze Mermaidz webseries is that the opening song is a real BOP! I was already listening in repeat when it came out.
6:56 Now you're talking about... I realize it's weird that both are sisters since Harmony has darker skin tone than Riviera.
The concept of these dolls makes no sense: fancy and delicate outfits with a tail for water play and terrible bad hair quality wasn't a good mix.
Maybe I'll try to take one or two if I see them in clearance... but only in order to put their tops and accessories on Winx Club dolls.

Yeah, I could never figure out why I never got into MM, and just chalked it up to being low-key mad at them for kicking MH off the shelves and leaving their TH-cam series on a cliffhanger, (which, now that I think about it, actually had more closure with the Mermaids at least giving Cora access to their underwater hangout where as MM ends with the color disappearing completely), even though that's not what happened at all.
Turns out there was more to it than that.

  • @kadajsnightqueen

As a quick post-mortem to this particular doll line, I think the main problem is that they just didn’t feel like mermaids. Popular culture has a particular vision of how a mermaid should look: pretty fish tail, long hair, nautical theming, lovely smiling face. Barbie pretty much nailed this look back in the 90’s, and Ariel and her sisters set it in our minds via Disney. The Mermaze dolls, though, just look like they’re a weird mix of trying too hard and half-baked concepts. The variety of tails and unique hairstyles is nice, and who doesn’t love a good color-change doll. But their clothes mostly look very strange on a mermaid (even as a little girl, I would have wondered how they could swim in those huge fluffy coats), the lack of articulation in the tails is a big turnoff, and as someone who grew up with Barbies and Skippers who could just slide on their shiny mermaid tails and take them back off whenever the imagination wanted, the inability to switch fins and legs just seems wrong. At least when Monster High did this, they had some variety and real articulation! Then there’s the faces. Who wants a doll that looks simultaneously bored, stoned, and stupid with a hint of RBF?
I still think a dedicated mermaid line could work. But this was most certainly a misfire.

looking at that orange haired mermaid in pyjamas....we were ROBBED 😭 I own 2 Mermaze dolls and I like them, but I'm not a huge fan because they were only really created to crush Mermaid High. I think even if MH had been a huge success, they probably would never have been an actual threat to MGA, so releasing a competing line just to sabotage the competition is a dick move on MGA's part. And I'll forever be a little salty that MGA split their budget so thin making Mermaze and Dream Ella. Maybe this isn't actually what happened, but in my mind, if they hadn't diverted resources to these 2 new lines, potentially the Bratz Rock Angelz repros would've been so much better. So yeah, as much as I like my 2 Mermaze dolls, I can't really say I'll miss them. I wish we could've got Mermaid High in my country though, they were cute and had potential, especially that prom/secret date line that was supposed to happen.

I actually wish I could come up with my own doll brand. I have a cool idea.
So I’ve listen to K-Pop for about 13/14 years now and I thought of a K-Pop mixed with Now United type of concept.
Basically the doll line is a group of dolls in a group. So it would be a Coed group, full of girl and guy dolls. But the thing is that the number of members change with each release. So for the first release maybe have 5 girl dolls and 2 guys, then the next would be maybe one guy and girl from the first release in the second group with 3 new dolls. In K-Pop there are subunits, which is a brand off of a main group with some of the members, but not all and that would be where each release could have different characters. And each character could match to a concept, like one character is a bad boy, so he’s in subunits with that concept or a girl is cutesy, so she get in concepts like that. And the characters are from around the world, like how Now United had done for their group. I also would want to make the dolls look different too, like different races and skin tones and even other conditions. I even thought of one of the girl dolls having a Hijab.
I like how K-Pop is marketed, you can make music to go with the release and the boxes could be similar to LOL Surprise OMG doll’s boxes. And a thing Bratz used to do, give them collector cards (which also happens in K-Pop Albums). K-Pop albums are marketed to be bought for more than just the album and I think this could work amazingly for dolls as well.

Seems more intended to adults (who are the ones who folow kpop) and that would exclude the children (a huge source of money for toy companies), in adittion, they would have to be well detailed and therefore that would raise the price highly (no parents would spend that much money on a child). Finally it should gain the attention and likes of the adults, surpasing the stigma of buying toys at such age.
It may end up being a success between adults collectors, but considering that this group would not be big enough to surpase the expectations in sellings and considering that not all of them would buy despite liking them, would end up being a bad idea.

Also, a pretty big thing about mermaid fans: WE LOVE HUGE FLUKES AND FINS. The ones on Mermaze are just way too small and don’t help the designs pop off whatsoever.

Mermaze has defeated Mermaid High for last because MGA was still a bigger company, i vote for MGA!, sigh, I've been noticing they're taking a break for now.

I do love some of the striking designs but the execution and price not so great. I got Mora on a deep clearance sale, shes beautiful but hair quality is not great, some of her eyelashes have fallen out and I HATED the tail. I would have loved the option of a removable tail, and I think it would have attracted a wider variety of doll collectors because I do love the fashions they had. I ended up rebodying mine and I like her better now

Mermaze mermaids is one of the doll lines that I don't care for . I do agree with everything you said about the dolls & playsets and their quality.

I think what could've actually gotten kids to buy this doll brand was to improve the tails. Honestly I myself would buy these dolls from how immensely good (well almost immensely good) they use colour contrasts. I specifically like the ice finned mermaids and their very cold colours to match with their outfits tail and looks. But I think that this doll brand also isn't something that many kids would probably be wowed about unless they saw any connection to these characters. If there was more depth to the story and a better plotline where they appear human at first but can change whenever into their mermaid version a LOT of kids would probably wish to buy this brand. A switch of articulation would probably be the go to hit for these dolls to make it far. But....alas I don't think these dolls will last unless they find a real way to draw their audience in.

OK I have a cousin who was obsessed with mermaids and she said that she didn't like the dolls because of the glass eyes and the dolls look very crappy what I mean by that is it looks like they just threw whatever they wanted to together

I wasn't planning on getting any of them and just started recently and ended up purchasing all of them except the one with the interchangeable fins but I'll get her too. I also want the car now. I like their out of water fashions. Since I never saw the show and am only looking at them as dolls certain things don't bother me like they may others. I saw one or two of them as the discount department store but was passing on them because I didn't know what I would do with them and they all looked alike. Then they added some others but the others were sold and I just kept looking at them and finally decided I wanted them. I always thought they were beautiful just didn't know how they would fit in my collection. Some of the hair quality could be better. The make-up is beautiful but I want to add a little more, so that it will be fun, I also actually really love the glass eyes, I think they are gorgeous and really makes them and their pouty lips. I hope they don't completely discontinue the line. I have thoughts of photography with them at the beach, I think that will be fun, along with the new muscle barbie signature looks Ken. Also if they continue I think they could have a really cool merman, probably way cooler than the Ken collector merman. I also like others would not pay full price. Thanks for the video, exactly what I was looking for.

Nothing is confirmed just yet. I have high hopes they will still release the slumber party girls and depending how well they do that will determine if they are gonna continue or not. I'm sure the slumber party girls have been in production way before we knew about them. I'm assuming it would cost them more money to just scrap then it would just to release them. Plus we saw a leak a while back of one of the slumber party's outfits
I also think they are gonna wait to get out all the new Rainbow High dolls first and promotion before they start back anything with Mermaze. I think that was one of the problems RH overshadowing Mermaze with every release. Didn't it confirm that they moved the Mermaze Dolls to the fall of this year
    I'm staying positive

I dont know much about the franchise I just saw it passing by once. But just from looking at the dolls, it seemed like the creators missed the main point of toys. Which is, to play.
These dolls really don’t look fun nor practical. As a kid I would’ve hated a hard plastic tail, it needs to be articulated. It would’ve been much better if they were made of rubber or silicone.
Then there’s the aspect of putting them in the water. It seems to be their selling point as they focus so much on the color changing tails. But if I look at the dolls themselves, putting them underwater seems like a nightmare. All these accessories, the hair, curls, buns, jackets. It seems like it will all be ruined after just submerging it once.
The toys look like collectors items. To be kept in a box and look at. But not as something that’s fun for kids to play with. They shouldve toned it down with all the accessories. And besides that, none of the characters is distinguishable.

These dolls have the most beautiful faces they are worth buying and replacing the bodies ,this company should for sure do that .release a new line with normal fashion doll bodies

I wholeheartedly agree with you! MGA should've just updated the Project Mc2 bodies (with RH level articulation) and made the Mermaze Mermaidz humans instead. Like a Moxie Teenz inspired type of doll line.

They were cute but super creepy looking. I think MGA should have gave them the feature to switch from Finns to legs. Like you said some of the hairstyles and overall design was just hideous and over the top. I also found the plot of the show to be super boring.
I think the whole mermaid trend died out in the mid 2010s. I can’t even lie tho when I was younger my mermaid dolls were my least played with dolls because of how limited they were.
