So to answer why furries, and more specifically, furry artists don't like nfts is not that they are uneducated of them (though do some fall under this). Its more that people are taking the images they make and are minting them into nfts and selling them, and there is nothing these artists can do to stop this, so it creates this stigma around nfts because while art theft is a problem in the community, usually calling someone out is enough. Now however if the art is stolen, minted, and sold, there is almost nothing the artist can do to stop this. Also a response to why gamers don't want nfts in their games or have items be nfts is cause a lot of gamers really don't care about making money off the games they play and don't want them flooded by people looking to just make money and dip.
There seems to be a misunderstanding of the "adopt" thing that some furry artists do. These adopts are basically artists designing characters and making reference sheets and selling them to another person. People might buy them due to a lack of creativity or because a certian design catches their eye but also paying for the artwork made of the characters. These don't always become sonas, many people make their own fursonas anyways, but these might become characters/OC's. They might use these for commissioning artwork of these characters or kinds of fursuits. Like secret suits or just a fursuit to preform as this character that is very distinct from yourself. Artists will either offer them for set amounts or auction them off if the demand is very high. Still, I think it's better to refer to them as characters or OC's as these are generally what they become rather than fursonas. People don't normally buy their fursona, they just make one up.
Basically, we don't get these to make money or as a status of wealth. People like these characters and want to be represented by them. Like buying a personal logo rather than a picture that says "hey, I have money and I'm a duche".
I'm related so much to Colossal. Not only are most overpriced "designer" clothes and furniture absolutely uninteresting for the price, they don't even compensate in function compared to a reasonably priced counterpart - they aren't better. In fact, most people who buy those things don't even use them - they just store them away to covet and collect. That 1000$ t-shirt is completely boring.
The mix of reprobatic-yet-intellectual conversation, as well as the blend of Newgrounds animation and Quake III icons staring back at me makes me think this podcast will be huge. Heck, it's at least got me wanting more!
First of all, gotta say I really love how you made a podcast so enjoyable to watch with all the editing and I'm looking forward to future episodes. I do feel like Nerd may be projecting a bit when he talks about NFTs in games, and their reception from gamers. I definitely wouldn't like this kind free market cosmetics/items which I assume is opposed to the current more centralized way of microtransactions, first because there is at least a semblance of stability in the worth of things right now, and also because it would further validate the recent economical model of games. In general, I feel like basically every domain where NFTs are implemented, they're trying to fix a system that is broken, and people think putting it on the blockchain will make it less bad because there's less restrictions from a regulator or a big company while the root of the problems still remains, and we're just moving the goalpost to an even less transparent regulator (cryptos). Hopefully when the Try Hards episode comes out, it will give a satisfactory explanation as to why you think they are an actual useful technology, beyond just "being less restricted by current regulators (and moving to new ones)".
Yeah, I also see no reason to move in-game items onto a blockchain. All the use cases can already be handled by a traditional centralized database, the devs can even add trading for real money if they really want to(remember Diablo 3 marketplace?) As for using the same item in different games it would involve the devs of both games to agree which item id means what(cause I'm assuming they're not gonna put actual assets onto the blockchain), how those items are used in games, etc. Might as well have a shared database for that.
Right!!! I miss this!! And this was even better than baited! Honest but with people that actually like each other. (Unlike having a rat on the podcast)

Nerd: the term you were looking for the whole podcast was "conspicuous consumption". It is the act of buying products at a higher price, without practical benefit in order to signal the owner's social status.
This was an entertaining episode 1. The patience and curtesy displayed by NerdCity is nothing short of polite. I think I'll subscribe since the robot was kind enough to recommend this to me.
Regarding the point that Nerd makes about furry art and NFT’s, I honestly don’t think it’s a bad idea. I agree with his and Pyro’s stances on it but I think it would kind of be a flop. Pyro makes the point that the community wouldn’t want to do it because they wouldn’t be comfortable with change which is 100% fair. It seems to me that a lot of the community, especially the people buying the adoptables and doing auctions for sonas are young. And in my experience as a 17 year old kid and my friends, we really only care for ourselves at this point in our lives. So to me I honestly would never buy any sona if it was tagged as an NFT. I feel like it also just makes buying one more complicated. No one who doesn’t touch crypto let alone ever want to in the first place is gonna get it. That’s just my assumption and my non-educated-about-crypto-and-nft brain vomit though. Also let me just say that the blood feud between Colossal and Pyro is so entertaining. Good show guys.
I agree on the last point you make. Adding in crypto/blockchain stuff to furry art just seems like overcomplicating the process for not enough gain. I frankly don't want to buy into crypto just to get art, I think there are way too many issues for me to justify putting money into it. As an example, am I gonna have to cover gas fees to get my commission? Plus there's the whole issue of malicious tokens that could drain my hypothetical wallet if interacted with and all the environmental issues of existing crypto infrastructure. I think it'd be a hard sell to get artists to use some unknown but less ecologically-damaging chain than one of the bigger, more established ones
The comparison to a digital image that can be easily replicated and almost impossible to differentiate vs a physical object is absurd. It’s impossible to claim ownership of something (like an image) that can be perfectly replicated in half a second by anyone with access to the internet. This is why no one, including myself, understands why someone would purchase an digital image for the amount you can buy a vehicle or a house with…
They don’t elaborate on it well enough, but they aren’t defending BAYC. They are defending the idea of being able to sell or place value on pieces of data or use them as methods of entry or differentiation. These uses wouldn’t make these pieces of data worth 250k, much smaller amounts.
I've never really been a podcast guy, but this is definitely one I'll be tuning into. You guys have a great chemistry plus really high quality production, at least for a TH-camr podcast

Great first episode, guys! You all have just enough disagreement and back and forth that it's not boring and enough politeness and common sense towards each other that it's not aggravating. I loved hearing everyone together. I am going to give my two cents on a few artist-related things discussed since I'm an artist myself as viewers who aren't familiar with that community may become confused. Around 51:54, those are known as "adoptables" they're very common but aren't the only way to get a character design from an artist and aren't only used for fursonas. Adoptables have been a huge debate with artists for years because the idea of selling off that sort of thing already premade (for sometimes thousands of dollars, which is usually only common for special closed species made by the artist or if the artist is incredibly popular) can be seen as pretty silly to some. The process really is a bit similar to NFTs, and has been a comparison made before but I've noticed crypto folks get a little tiffed by it sometimes. As for the suggestion that artists are rarely that educated about tech, I would honestly agree. But I would also counterpoint that with a lot of tech people not bothering to learn about artists and art, many of them seeing artists as lesser and more uneducated people in general. Which not only makes it difficult for artists to want to combine their skills with these projects but makes them wary when a tech guy shows a lot of ignorance in the artistic process and expects them to help them out or get into the community with them anyway. The reason many artists are "afraid of change" is because of how many people take advantage of us or see us as personal entertainment machines and wave money in front of us to try and get us to do stuff, leading artists to be much more closed off to new possibilities unless they've been thoroughly tested for quite some time. The amount of peers I've seen get screwed over by these guys because they don't understand art and its industry at all is insane. There needs to be more education on both sides before further continuing. I'll lean into your stereotype and say I personally think NFTs suck ass for actual art right now but I think with time and improved tech it could be great. Like, these minting sites don't even have features to make it so you can't repost the exact same JPG file with the same name and everything over and over again leading to tons of scams. I hope in the future it gets better and more rounded out.
@@gnewhall4116 I wasn't watching the clock but overall less than 10 minutes, I'm a fast typer and enjoyed the video enough I had been thinking of what to say in my comment while watching. :)
@@DG-LG Hey, you're welcome! I didn't want any viewers getting confused. I think there's a really unspoken issue with a lot of people outside of creative communities assuming artists are low-key uneducated and seeing refusing to learn about the complexities of their industry when trying to work with them/convincing them to join something as a non-issue. People genuinely rarely care about artists' opinions and input into important conversations.
The NFT stuff presented here contrasts to what I been learning on Coffeezilla. Apparently, most NFT art sells a hyperlink, and aren't an analogue to "owning an original," since the art can't be hosted on the block chain unless it's just a few pixels.

I love how Colossal is completely baffled by the idea of ✨status✨ and how anybody can care about it. That being said: I agree that status as a construct is completely ridiculous, but like… suspend your disbelief my guy. This whole NFT game as it stands is about status. Just put yourself in the shoes of the elitists for a minute. They’re very lonely, shame.
He understood it he was illustrating the point about how dolan and pyro pretended to be on the same side talking about nfts but then participated in that culture
@@male1ism Constructs are real, too? Hierarchy is a construct as well. They're both societal concepts that we can't physically touch or create, but we need to enact it through our behaviour. For instance: a brick can be physically created, picked up and thrown. I can't pick up hierarchy and throw it at you to kill you, but I can still weaponize it to harm you. Bricks, Hierarchy and Status are all real, and they all exist. How you weaponize or embody them in practice can just be a bit ridiculous. To embody status: You need to buy a fancy watch and wear it as a symbol of your excess wealth. But it needs to be fancier than someone else's watch. It has to be the best watch. And you have to let a certain group know that this watch is the best watch, otherwise the watch won't establish that you deserve a higher spot in the hierarchy. The content of your character doesn't matter. Integrity and intellect don't matter... it's all about frivolous excess and openly bragging about said excess. It's shallow and silly.
@@HumanShitpostA lot of people use "social construct" in order to delegitimize a concept, even using the phrase "X isn't real, it's just a social construct.". I think he was assuming you were doing that. Which I think you kind of are doing, anyways, considering you had to qualify that you hate that the construct of status exists. Social constructs are created because they serve a utility, and civilization nessecitates the creation of numerous social constructs to function at all. People who bitch about particular social constructs should never have their political opinions taken seriously. That said, status being defined by your decadence is certainly wretched. Also, not all forms of hierarchy are social constructs. There is a hierarchy that nessecarily exists between parent and child (besides the one that socially defined), for example.
So let me get this straight four youtubers I like, three of which have the most inconsistent upload schedules on the website. Have came together to create a podcast, cool I'll return here again in a year to watch episode three.
Is it just me or does anyone else think that watching that much jaystation is more damaging to Colossal’s health compared to all the cigarettes he has partaken of?
So batches, you’re talking about adoptables. And in regards of NFTs, there have been multiple cases of assholes posting up others artwork on OpenSea to sell when it’s not their artwork or property to sell. I make adoptables to make a quick buck on quick designs.
The historical inaccuracy it's killing me that is a pike helmet that was used by Germany but not in world war II it was used in world war 1 and the Nazis didn't even rise to power until the Great depression if I'm not mistaken which happened in the 1930s world war I happened in between 1914 to 1918
history repeats itself, these bored apes are literally just those "batches" (generally called adopts/adoptables) but for hypebeast crypto guys instead of furries, ive been saying this since the beginning and its just so weird to watch it all unfold
The problem that I have with NFTs is that it uses cryptocurrency-- in which it's worth changes at seemingly random. So if you sell an NFT, it's value could change with a blink of an eye for better or for worse. I never really liked crypto for that reason, as well as the people who like to buy GPUs so they can constantly mine crypto. I feel as if the majority of people who get into crypto and NFTs are just in it for money and to show off their wealth. There isn't many people I've seen (except for Nerd) that uses that platform to buy artwork. If tokenizing didn't contain crypto then I'd be fine with it.
Who's gonna tell these guys about the adoptables community on Toyhouse. Listening to that last bit of commentary about selling old sonas and character designs to buy new ones made me wanna scream at them about how they're not even that far off base, they're literally right on the money with that. This was super entertaining to listen to and I can't wait for more content to come out

Very true, and it's not like furries are the only ones who do the whole adopt/whatever. They're just more prevalent.
Basically, we don't get these to make money or as a status of wealth.
People like these characters and want to be represented by them. Like buying a personal logo rather than a picture that says "hey, I have money and I'm a duche".
yes this was irritating me a little bit, crazy to lump all adopts or designs into fursonas lmao
That 1000$ t-shirt is completely boring.
love how nerd turns the chaos in the call into a point he's trying to make in front of everyone's eyes its pretty good
The mix of reprobatic-yet-intellectual conversation, as well as the blend of Newgrounds animation and Quake III icons staring back at me makes me think this podcast will be huge. Heck, it's at least got me wanting more!
"being a hypcrite does not make me wrong." -pyrocynical, 2022
100% right
First of all, gotta say I really love how you made a podcast so enjoyable to watch with all the editing and I'm looking forward to future episodes.
All the use cases can already be handled by a traditional centralized database, the devs can even add trading for real money if they really want to(remember Diablo 3 marketplace?)
As for using the same item in different games it would involve the devs of both games to agree which item id means what(cause I'm assuming they're not gonna put actual assets onto the blockchain), how those items are used in games, etc. Might as well have a shared database for that.

Honestly - feel like between the four of you there are a lot of topics and stories that can be shared. Was very excited to hear/see the first episode. Someone else said they were surprised at the amount of visual editing that went along with the video. While very funny I'm aware of the amount of work that takes. Wouldn't mind just audio podcasts if it meant less work for you guys - you're all pretty busy. Loved the first episode chaps.
Only a couple minutes in and I did not expect this much visual editing, hopefully y’all are able to keep going this strong because it was a pleasant surprise compared to most podcasts

Greetings from the Netherlands, you absolute madmen.
This was an entertaining episode 1. The patience and curtesy displayed by NerdCity is nothing short of polite. I think I'll subscribe since the robot was kind enough to recommend this to me.
This was so entertaining
you guys have perfect dynamic for a podcast. Keep them coming
Then again Sam Hyde made bank with that fake pony dating simulator, these furries will buy anything.
I think it'd be a hard sell to get artists to use some unknown but less ecologically-damaging chain than one of the bigger, more established ones

suprised how good this podcast is, realllly well edited the visuals help so much keep it boys
"Jaystation Responded," I think "old man Coloss yells for 1h about an overpriced T-shirt and furries" would have been a bit more accurate :P
Pyro's fursona's character development is measured in kilograms

Hey just curious, how long did it take you to write this comment?
@@gnewhall4116 I wasn't watching the clock but overall less than 10 minutes, I'm a fast typer and enjoyed the video enough I had been thinking of what to say in my comment while watching. :)
Just replying as an artist to say thankyou for this post.
I didnt want life made even more complicated and exploity!
That editing was amazing, I normally won't even have the tab of a podcast I'm listening to focused but I didn't want to miss that stellar editing.
this going to be one of the most entertaining podcasts if they actually get around to doing it
The NFT stuff presented here contrasts to what I been learning on Coffeezilla. Apparently, most NFT art sells a hyperlink, and aren't an analogue to "owning an original," since the art can't be hosted on the block chain unless it's just a few pixels.
the amount of effort put into this my gosh
blows most other podcasts out of the water. whoever does this editing deserves to get paid at least 5 dollars.
The whole podcast is Nerd almost saying something and being interrupted. I hope you guys figure out a good system to improve this. I suggest shock collars.

How is status a construct? Human hierarchy is real
There is a hierarchy that nessecarily exists between parent and child
(besides the one that socially defined), for example.

So batches, you’re talking about adoptables. And in regards of NFTs, there have been multiple cases of assholes posting up others artwork on OpenSea to sell when it’s not their artwork or property to sell. I make adoptables to make a quick buck on quick designs.

I do disagree with nerd city on NFTs (I’m more environmentally conscious) but other than that, I love this podcast so far!
They're such a scam
The editing on this is great! Really looking forward to the next episode.
