    Its crazy that we don't celebrate ourselves for simply living, we tend to wait for accomplishments to gives us the "okay" to give ourselves love. I learned this the hard way and still am, being in a state of wtf after finishing college and now working.. not feeling like I am doing enough because I am not constantly busy. Learning to appreciate simply being alive and healthy!

    I was cooking spaghetti .. thinking about the turmoil in my life… my three kids .. the battle raising them alone …just working on the resistance.. trying so hard to do this just one more day … and I literally burst into tears when she said “welcome home”… you’ve been hard on yourself long enough. I just cried and cried.

    Very interesting conversation. I’ve never heard of her work but I do appreciate this conversation. I don’t do it in the bathroom mirror cause I don’t spend a lot of time in the bathroom in the morning in general but part of my morning ‘ritual’ which I do in front of my altar in my bedroom I pull a tarot card and do smudging and use an assortment or sound healing tools and at the very end I do box breathing and give myself a hug and then there’s a floor length mirror I can see myself in probably 5 ft away and I always make a point to look myself in the eyes from that distance and say “I love you” and that’s how I’ve been starting my day for a while but I just added the “I love you” in the mirror about a month ago. Interesting with the high five. Good stuff.

    Just a thought but could it be that the 5 second rule worked so well for Mel Robbins because her trauma response was to be "on the run", like the fight/flight modes was automatic for her? I'm thinking that those of us still stuck in the freeze mode won't find success with it because our automatic response is very different and there are actual things holding us back which is what got us stuck in the freeze mode in the first place. The freeze mode is generally activated when you have no visible way of escaping so going 5 4 3 2 1 may not be as helpful as it may be for someone who is more wired towards the fight/flight mode.

    • @onewithher
      @onewithher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn't you use the 5 second rule to bring awareness to this freeze mode state and then from there ask yourself questions and bring you back to present moment and go from there?

    I am super curious. I appreciate the dialogue first and foremost. In any mainstream conversation that you both discuss in detail I have never heard either of you use the term mental illness when discussing yourself or your issues. In mainstream media all of this type of conversation is cloaked in that term. Both are selling a viewpoint. Such an interesting topic. I do t know what number the DSM is up to these days but I am glad to see and encourage anyone who helps people to help themselves. After all every individual has the seed of truth within themselves. Having some kick ass guides is cool for sure.

    Thank you two amazing women for this conversation. I do a fist bump in the mirror, that works better for me. I say "Keep going bro. Good work." Even if I haven't done anything special yet. Thankfully I'm pretty comfortable looking in the mirror. Good luck to all the ones doing this journey. It's not easy but you're not giving up and that means everything. That's the reason to be proud of yourself. Your willingness to heal and love yourself and others in a world that praises dismissiveness. Love you guys!

    I love the concept of giving myself a high five and I'm completely on board with what Ms. Robbins says about the positive associations your brain makes, but what if 'high-fiving' is not part of your culture? I don't think I've ever 'high-fived' anyone, so it doesn't come with any of the associated meanings, e.g. 'you're loved' that are mentioned. I would really appreciate some feedback.

      Hey, I liked your question and even I can't answer for Ms Robbins, maybe you could caress your reflexion in the mirror?like petting kind of a thing, or give a kiss even? I don't know since these imply more of a loving energy than boosting someones energy. Or try the hive five to see if it will have an effect on you after all :)

    I read the book by Mel after listening to this and I have to say that it felt a bit dishonest and commercial. Unlike your book. It made a lot of valid points but it was a just a pop science. It felt like it was just written to make sales. I didn't feel human heart poured into it.
