  • Ride along for my BFR. Haven't done much of this type flying since buying the plane. First time doing stalls, manual gear extension and shutting down an engine! I haven't spent much time at uncontrolled fields recently and with the haze/snow it was hard to see the concrete runway and white planes. Of course when I have an instructor on board I make some of my worst landings. :)

    Got my multi rating in a 310 back in 1983 and started my flying career, now flying a Global 6000. The 310 is a beautiful airplane and it flies as good as it looks.

    Nicely done. It’s kinda nice to be put through the paces once in a while. I learned quite a bit more about twin engine and landing gear by watching this. Congrats!

      Thank you Stephen! I was glad to have him do my BFR. It was cool to actually shut down an engine and to do the manual gear extension. Now if I have to do that for real, it will be easier understanding how easy it is. :)

    Great BFR Sir . There is a lot going on with flying and Keeping eyes outside and inside during any type of flying but in a Twin it's more to do and when I did my commercial check ride in the Piper Arrow I had to demonstrate emergency landing gear system failure and my hands was full staying ahead and at the end of a check ride or a BFR when the engine is shutdown you get the best words you love to hear is great job and congratulations you passed!!! Congratulations on your BFR and a great Instructor that was absolutely amazing

      Thank you Bernard! You are correct about a lot going on in a twin. Lots of things to consider and a lot of them go much faster than normal GA planes. It is always great to pass a check ride or BFR and in this case, beyond just checking the box, the MEI I flew with really knows 310's. He was great!

    It's remarkable how hard it is to see the runway in those conditions and as far as the landings go, I see nothing wrong with them. Any landing you can walk away from in my opinion is a good one. Great job

      Thanks! Some planes are easy to squeak on every time ( C172 for me) and some (like the 310/Saratoga) are much harder to get that perfect feeling on landing. I always try though :)

      You are Welcome , Where i live in Apple Valley , Ca. I can stand on the top of my pool slide and look to the left and see where the Song Bird took off from the old Apple Valley Air Port .. and I can almost see the Flying Crown Ranch, ( Yes its still there) the facade is totally different and the Song Bird no longer sits out front but the chimney is still from the original house. As a matter of fact I was at a Garage Sale at the Crown the other day.. Didn't buy anything just rubbernecking.. Keep up the good work Later A J

    Nice work! These videos are an excellent way to debrief, for all of us. A couple of comments: For multi-engine (I own a Baron 58) you might like GUMPSS. Gas, Undercarriage, MIxture, Props, Seatbelts, and Switches. The final S at the end is great for Yaw Dampner, landing and taxi light configuration, and heater.
    The only other constructive idea I'll share since you are already more than competent: (unless gusty and heavy) blue line, and especially blue plus 5, is a lot of energy for short final, and in my opinion, really fast for over the fence. Check your POH before listening to some random guy like me on the internet - but my POH is 101 blue and 95 final approach @ max gross. I have VG's so when light 85-90 on short final with judicious up trim, gets the mains on soft and slow in unison with stall warning horn.
    In no way am I criticizing your ops - just noticed you wrestling the landing energy after calling out blue or blue plus 5. Thanks for sharing your beautiful 310 ad pilot skills with all of us!

      Thank you Tango! I only use the blue line plus 5 on long runways. I use 1.3 Vso whenever I go to short or grass fields. I've never flown a Baron but the twin cessna's need a little bit more energy to the flare to not plant it too hard. I usually cross the fence a little above blue line and start bleeding the speed better towards the threshold than I did here. VG's are also on my list of safety upgrades...along with shoulder harnesses. Thanks again for watching and your words of wisdom! I am always eager to learn. I'll get some greasers again!

    Great video. Just found your page a week or two ago and have really been enjoying your flights. I'm in the western suburbs and fly out of DPA, so I also enjoy the familiar sights. In fact - also met Elmer just about 2 weeks ago as I was seeking out some more training.

    As a kid I used to watch the TV program "Sky King." When the TV series began, Sky King flew a Cessna T-50 Bobcat. In 1956 it was replaced with a 1956 Cessna 310B. The last aircraft used was a 1960 Cessna 310D. A third 310, “Song Bird III,” was used for publicity photos.

    Thanks for the video. Love your avionics suite / layout. Could you share what you've got in there? Is that an Aspen in front of you and 430 in the center bottom? Any guidance appreciated as I look to update my avionics as well. Thanks!

      Glad you liked it Mathew! The attitude indicator is a Garmin G5 (if you look at a newer video you will see I also installed the Garmin G5 HSI), the audio panel is the Garmin GMA 340, the top gps is the Garmin GNS530W, below it is the 430 and below that is the Garmin GTX345 transponder. The MFD on the right stack is the Garmin GMX200 and the radar is a RDR160 (need a new screen). Hope that helps and good luck on your avionics upgrade!

    Beautiful 310. Recently discovered your channel and subscribed. Quick question: why the large split on your fuel flow (pressure?) gauge between L and R? Is that actual or a gauge error?

      Thanks for watching! It's a gauge error. I have the actual fuel flow on my Engine Monitor on the pilot side and it is matched. I'll try to have the gauge corrected during annual.

    Great day for flying, cockpit alittle warm with the a/c inop.....I think the inop sticker is just there so renters don't use it. Next time im going to try it on the ground to see if it works. lol

    FWIW: Please, take this with the spirit intended as you may have asked the examiner out of courtesy. When random navigating especially with altitude changes, TCAS equipped or not, asking for flight following IMHO isn't optional, it's mandatory.

    Local controller made a bad call telling the Bonanza and additional aircraft ready for departure to hold short and wait for 1BC. Not an unsafe call but: Good gosh she had enough room she could've rolled a couple of VFR 73's out ahead of you (1BC) and still had room. No call for intentionally delaying aircraft...that makes me nuts!! The meter's running lady! Maybe ATC training in progress?

      Yes. I only know because one of the vids I watched he had a double vacuum pump failure which caused his de-icing boots to misbehave. Not in icing conditions but maybe you can find the vid. He explains to Jaime how rare a dual failure is and that he checked both pumps prior to t/o and he showed her and us what the boots were doing.

    During run-up , your mixture knobs are not in the full forward position (?) Even at high density altitudes runups are full rich, aren't they? At takeoff you DID push them up.

      I'm not an expert on much of anything but I do subscribe to Mike Busch's engine running philosophies for the most part. The only time my mixtures are full forward is low DA takeoff's and go-arounds. Other than that, you'll usually find them leaned to some degree. Kind of long to explain the concepts here but if you are really interested look up his writings on engine management. He writes for AOPA and EAA. Thanks for watching!

      I agree about leaning for higher-DA take-offs and general operation, but again, in this video you're only at 700 MSL, and moreover, you DID push them full forward for take-off in this video. So why not for the runup?

      Because dumping more fuel than needed in the cylinders doesn't help check the magnetos or verify that the prop feathers. It just doesn't make sense to me from a mechanical standpoint to push them forward for the run-up.

      Hmm, I'm under the impression that doing a run-up ALSO determines whether an engine is capable of developing full power, exclusive of testing the mags and prop(s). In my 172S (fuel injected), when I attempt to do run-ups at 1800rpm with the mixture taxi-leaned, I have to push more throttle to get there. The engine tends to either lag or run rough. Doesn't it also do that to you? Not wanting to beat the dead horse here, but I'm thinking the POH instructions for a run-up must say to use full-rich for a reason, right? I'm willing to be schooled on why this isn't necessary, but I've never seen anyone else do a run-up with the mixtures leaned (unless at high DA's of course). I'll check out Mike Bosch's info mentioned above.

      @@drpando I hope by now you've read the articles he was referring to, EXCELLENT info. We were all taught they way you described, but it's not the "best" practice. Do you land with the mixture full rich? You shouldn't! Do you lean enough on the ground so that it won't run over about 1200RPM? YOU SHOULD! that way you will never take of with it lean, since it won't hardly run above idle. Do you Richen the mixture in the decent? Why? It's all in the Mike Busch and John Deakin articles. Oh and BTW, unless you are doing a full throttle run-up and checking the max static RPM you really aren't checking the power output during the run-up.

    ATC Question on the Cessna 310. I had a 310 lose the right engine the other day. Pilot must have been pretty busy in the cockpit because he wouldn't declare an emergency but said he needed to land at the nearest airport. It wasn't until his first right 360 that I realized he had an engine out. Was difficult to get information from him because he was busy so I just did what I could. My question is, with a right engine out he was only able to make right turns to line up with the airport. If you were to line up with say for example runway 36 in this situation and my vectors had you just 20° off to the right of centerline, is there any trim or other that a pilot can use to do a slight left turn even with the right engine being out? I'm guessing a very sketchy move would be to cut power on the left engine and then make that correction gliding... But short of that answer, under power, how much realistically can a 310 turn to the left using trim or flaps or whatever to line up when they're too far to the wrong side of straight and level for the runway? Or do they simply need to make another right 360 and then ease it over to line up? He was about 5 mi North on the 3rd 360 when he finally lined up.

    I need to move a Cessna 340 form KLOT to 1C5 (Bolingbrook). Does anyone know a pilot qualified in the 340?

      @@310Pilot Will do , You might find this interesting ..I went to a Garage Sale at the Flying Crown Ranch here in Apple Valley ,the other day ..didn't buy anything but the new owners are nice..No Songbird though and the facade is completely changed and the only thing that is left from the original ranch is the Chimney... Time changes things Oh well later Happy Flying A J

    If you can manage the fuel system in a 310, the rest of it is a breeze.

    Hi, I bought the Cessna 310r for Microsoft Simulator. In the manual it says, after running flying the plane on the Main Tanks for 90 minutes then swap to the Aux Tanks. My question is,is that 90 minutes per flight, or an accumulated 90 minutes, say over two or three flights.

    What is the Aircraft like on pitch.. I have a model on a flight sim and the pitch seems quite flimsy and sensitive.

      I'd say it's the opposite. To me is seems very stable and solid on pitch...the controls aren't too heavy or light.

      Contacted the developer and he's had a look. He's found an error that's made it 20%-25% more pitch sensitive xD..He's gonna fix it on the next update. Cheers for the reply!.

      Hello Tyler, flying isn't as expensive as many usually think. The plane cost as much as the average new wake boarding boat. If you get hooked, it does require some financial dedication to it like a lot of hobbies but it's completely worth it.

      310 Pilot thanks for the reply man! I guess I see all of these vids and assume most of these people are owners. I've got 32.5hrs so far and am about to kick off training again towards my PPL, no one has solod me yet lol, luckily I found an instructor who will very soon. I keep looking forward to your vids!

      Every day is a good day to be flying....well almost. As long as there are no thunderstorms, icing, LLWS, severe turbulence, etc. I take great effort to stay clear of things that can jeopardize safety. Thanks for watching.
