More Kissing Booth. Ew. More terrible dialogue. Ew. Still no apple boxes. Why!?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are continuing to react to (and suffer through) The Kissing Booth. They discuss the horrible relationship dynamics between Noah and Elle. They are frustrated by the cheesy score, poor green screen compositing, and the ridiculous framing of the actors. At least Twilight mustache dad shows up and has good things to say. After one movie, Jono’s brain has been liquified, and Alan swears almost as much as Tarantino. Dare they watch the rest?

Exactly! The Edge of Seventeen is a great antidote to this. The ‘bad boy’ Nadine is into in that film clearly has no interest, and she organically realizes on her own that she likes the good guy, Erwin, who really likes her, back. They genuinely like getting to know each other, spending time in each other’s company. And even though it starts off with Erwin clearly being more into Nadine romantically than she is into him, she realizes she likes him, too, and is upfront about it at the end. It’s such a sweet relationship they have, and I’m ten times more invested in that than this pile of slag that’s called a movie, where two characters who don’t know anything about each other but have sex a bunch and have no healthy dynamic going on, are expected to be idolized

    • @Simplenotion
      @Simplenotion ปีที่แล้ว +156

I am really sorry that happened to you. I think in this case it is more a case of bad writing - Noah isn't meant to be portrayed as violent towards his brother - as shown in their "brawl" - where in the end is deescalating - it's just a cheap shot to ramp up the drama. Apart from that though: they aren't close at all and both have a pretty simplistic stereotypical picture of the other (by what they hear and see at school and through their parents). They obviously have basically no common interests (besides Elle *insert eye roll* ) and there is a lot of jealousy, disinterest and non existent communication at the forefront of the relationship. They really don't KNOW each other at all. I have friends with relationships exactly like that with their siblings. Some later in life actually fought to develop a proper bond and had to talk through everything...so many wrong assumptions. This could serve as an explanation as well.

And generally, even if Noah hasn't had a history of abusing his romantic partners, it's still entirely reasonable that Lee would think Noah would be because Noah is still like that outside of relationships.
He gets into fights with other guys constantly, his first reaction when Lee accused him of hurting Elle wasn't to try and explain himself but to attack his own brother, and even before him and Elle were a thing, he was showing abusive tendencies, with the whole trying to control her life, threatening other boys into not dating her, slamming his hand on his car and forcing her to get inside (and then promptly taking her to a secluded area where they are out of the view of witnesses instead of taking her home), etc etc.
Even without the idea in mind that he's been abusive to his partners before, it's completely believable that he would be because every moment of this movie could make him pass as a serial killer in the making.

I was also highly amused and confused when she was sobbing over Noah actually doing the right thing by restraining Lee, but really, it's just another thing that reinforces how unhealthy the relationship and Noah himself are. Elle is in so much distress that she can't even recognize Noah has zero intention of hurting his own brother. She can't see anything but Noah's history of violence and his current anger, even when he's right in front of her doing nothing except stopping Lee from physically hurting anyone including himself. It honestly kind-of-a-lot-sucks that what Elle took from that is "being with you hurts the people I care about and I can't do that" instead of something like "you've hurt too many people, and I *won't* tolerate that no matter how much I care about you/you care about me"!

Abusive dynamics in relationships in movies shouldn’t be overlooked for the sake of the good parts that make them fun to watch, because those dynamics can be recreated in real relationships and people, in a real way, need to be aware and to look out for them and to not romanticize them because they cause real harm.

That's just an irreparable red flag to me. If someone chooses to use violence (and I count that as violence, or the threat of violence) to ignore the boundary you've just set and force you to relinquish that boundary and do what they want instead, that's a major problem and not just an imperfection. That says something about the kind of person they are. That tells me instantly they're not the kind of person to respect or even understand your boundaries. To me, losing your temper is just another term for getting really angry, lots of us lose our tempers every day, that's just a thing that happens. The issue for me is that even when you're angry, you need to maintain healthy boundaries with yourself about things you will and will not do with that anger. Noah repeatedly demonstrates that the line is not "i will not turn my anger towards violence", it is "i will not turn my anger towards violence against *these people*", and i think (and i'm pretty sure elle and lee think, too) that it's only a matter of time before he crosses that boundary as well.
I once read a therapist's account of running a group therapy session for domestic abusers. In it, one of the participants talked about how he'd gotten into a fight with his wife in the kitchen and he said he just lost it, he couldn't control himself, he hit her.
The therapist said, well, you were in the kitchen, why didn't you grab a knife and stab her?
What are you talking about, the man said, i would never, i'm not a monster.

Stuff like punching walls, throwing things, and, yes, Noah slamming his hands on his car while yelling at Elle, would definitely be hinging on physical abuse or at least HUGE warning signs of abuse down the line.

This movie definitely deserves some credit for making Lee bad as well. Normally, Lee would be the "nice, vanilla, and boring" love interest, but the fact that he was actually possessive of Elle and also had some anger issues was a nice twist. Plus, there are some interesting comparisons to be drawn between Lee and Noah. Once Lee snaps, you can see some clear similarities between them, the main difference is that Noah is a lot more obvious about the type of person he is, or perhaps Lee simply hasn't had a chance to become fully garbage due to always being behind his brother. Thinking of it that way, Lee is actually scarier than Noah. At least with Noah, he's a giant walking red flag labeled "STAY AWAY". With Lee it's much harder to tell and you might already be in a relationship before he reveals just how bad he is.

@@evanbeinstein5102 How am I giving him too much credit? I'm not saying he's good. I'm just saying that it's easier to get out of a toxic relationship the earlier it is, and someone who is obviously bad allows you to hit the emergency exit sooner than someone who takes some time to show their true colors.
Noah and Lee are both garbage, it's just that Noah is an easier to get rid of type of garbage.
Probably at least. I ain't a relationship expert, nor do I know the exact difficulties of exiting a toxic relationship.

@kylerivera3470 I meant it more as Noah seems much more toxic than Lee. Not to say Lee is some golden boy, he is controlling over Elle and his violent reaction wasn't warranted, but Noah is all of Lee's flaws times a hundred. Lee fights with his (probably abusive) brother and just asks Elle to not date him. Noah threatens every man who was interested in her so he would be her only option, he fistfights anyone who so much as makes Elle uncomfortable, he slams the car and yells at her when she isn't "obedient." I just don't feel like the two are comparably toxic.

    • @kylerivera3470
      @kylerivera3470 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@evanbeinstein5102 Not now maybe, but we don't really know how toxic Lee could become. The thing with Lee is that he never had a chance to become truly toxic because he was always in his brother's shadow. Give Lee freedom and power and he could very well become as bad as Noah, or perhaps even worse since he's probably more desperate for control after lacking it for so long.
Basically, with Noah you have a pretty good idea of how bad he is while Lee is more of a wildcard. Both are bad, but at least it's easy to tell that you should avoid Noah while Lee might take some time to show his true colors.

I'm not saying Lee is a Saint or anything, but I can KIND OF see his point of view? Hear me out 😅 the implication is that Noah has bullied Lee all his life. He's taller, stronger, popular with the ladies and very clever (entry to Harvard and all). Plus Noah has these anger issues, I'm pretty sure the film says he's had them since he was a kid. So not only would he likely direct that anger towards Lee but he'd suck up all the attention from the parents, because they'd be trying to deal with Noah's behaviour. Now imagine you're a kid dealing with physical and verbal abuse from your older brother, watching him get everything he wants and watching your parents pour all their attention into him. Your main support system, the one person you can confide in, is your best friend, and then you find out she's willingly entered into a relationship with your abuser. I'd snap too under those circumstances. That being said, I don't think the film portrays this well AT ALL. Because the tone of this film is light-hearted teen rom-com, and you're supposed to ROOT for Noah, Lee's outburst seems completely out of place and over the top. This film SHOULD have been a drama told from Lee's perspective, about how damaging sibling abuse can be.

I think you should cover My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I'm not Greek, but I'm Latina on my mom's side, so my parents' wedding was almost exactly like Toula and Ian's wedding where they got married in her church and her family took up an entire side while his side was just a handful of people 😂 (They got married in Panama because that's where my mom grew up and where they met, while my dad was from the United States and met my mom while he was in the Air Force)
Anyway, I think there's a lot to cover in MBFGW, one of the obvious things being the culture shock between Ian's vanilla American family and Toula's Greek family that is portrayed throughout the movie as the embodiment of pure chaos. On top of that, Toula spends a good chunk of the movie being ashamed of her family and culture, but she eventually turns around and embraces them, in large part because Ian embraces them so wholeheartedly out of his desire to be part of the family that he's marrying into.
Also, I love the part where Ian realized that Toula was the server at the restaurant because he didn't recognize her post-glowup. When she says that she was Frump Girl, he just said, "I don't remember Frump Girl, but I remember you." I almost literally swooned lol. It undercuts the rom-com stereotype of the girl who isn't conventionally attractive getting a glowup and suddenly she matters. Sure, her confidence goes up, and that's probably what helped Ian take interest in her, but he already liked her personality before she changed her appearance, even if it didn't equate to an immediate love connection. The movie also makes a point in showing that Toula is already smart and determined pre-glowup--she just didn't have the confidence at first to stand up to her family (especially her father) to make her life what she wanted it to be.

i don’t know if you would ever actually watch it, but one of my favourite platonic male-female friendships ever put on screen is Carter (Dan Byrd) and Sam (Hilary duff) from “a Cinderella story”.
They don’t have a falling out the whole time and they genuinely show love and warmth without it seeming romantic at all. They are both super supportive of each other and it’s honestly the first m/f platonic relationship I ever saw on screen.
It was also the first time I saw a female protagonist unapologetically call out the romantic interest on his crap and actually mean it/make it convincing - that speech is iconic
(Also Jennifer Coolidge is the evil stepmother which is enough of a selling point on its own)

Something that bothers me immensely about movies like this (and scenes in other modern media such as games) is that the actors always portray as "victims of love". As if when two people fall in love, they just can't help but be irresponsible and often harmful to one another in every possible way in the face of looming consequences, and in the last ten minutes, it all magically ends up happy despite being based almost entirely on physical attraction.
I can't say I've been in love yet, or in a romantic relationship, but to my understanding:
    > loving someone also means *caring about* and being there for them, not just wanting them - a tragic, but easily avoidable, limitation of using the same word "love" for physical interaction, platonic closeness, and actual relationship.
    > They also miss out on the whole *choice* aspect of love - like choosing to care and be loyal and respectful after an argument, or choosing to stop and figure out a resolution together before proceeding.
    > There is no "I feel so-and-so about this" discussion, mostly accusatory shouting followed somehow by passionate kissing?!
    > There is rarely accountability or growth. For example, Noah says sorry for being violent, then brushes off the idea of changing. Later, he maybe doesn't punch his brother back, but is physically restraining him really that much different. Its a humiliating strength-flex with no admission that maybe Lee has a reason for reacting like that, or that Noah might be in the wrong about something.
The whole thing just promotes a misunderstanding of love and conflict resolution to viewers, especially young viewers.

When I was in college, my professor spoke about his marriage. It had been an arranged marriage for him and I had grown up knowing that I would opt for an arranged marriage myself. So he said that love is a choice. He chose to love her and he chose to be a good husband to her. And when they lost their daughter, they were able to stand together.
When I got married, it was arranged, it didn't work out. He broke my heart and I got divorced. I married again, it was also arranged and I chose to trust him after my terrible first experience. It has been a continuous process. We have fights. There are days where we scream and cry yet, through it all, we choose each other. Over and over, we choose to listen and understand and change our behaviour and better ourselves. That is what it means to love someone.
Unfortunately, it is just not that dramatic and so not many movies show this process.

So do I! And it's so very true. The truth will inevitably come out, and it will never come out in a way that's gonna put you in a good light. If people find out through other means than you telling them, they have no way to trust that you would tell them things openly and honestly. Maybe you would've told them later, but they can't know that. And if you tell them yourself, you have control over how you tell them and when, and can make it come as less of a shock than if people just find out on their own. You can immediately do damage control, and you show them that you'll tell the truth even if it would make you look bad. And that builds a lot of trust.
I've had some traumatic experiences with partners in my past, and literally the only reason I trusted my most recent ex (who is just the best guy I've ever met, and we're still good friends, we just grew apart) is that he on several occasions told the truth even when it made him look bad and even when it would hurt my feelings. So I knew that he wasn't the kind of person to hide things to either spare my feelings or save his own skin. And if the truth would hurt my feelings, he made sure to show up and put in the work and be there for me to help me work through it. We have a saying in Dutch, "wie z'n gat brandt, moet op de blaren zitten", which means as much as "if you burn your ass you have to sit on the blisters". And he was the epitome of that.
If we hadn't been in those situations, I wouldn't trust that he'd always tell me the truth. To this day he is still the only person I trust to always give me 100% the truth, no matter what.

This movie reminds me of a movie I watched in my high school health class. I can't remember if we were doing a segment directly related to this or if they were just using the health class taught by the PE teacher as an excuse to have students watch this. I can't remember the name of it or even names of characters atm, but like lots of things in high schools, it starts with the Female Lead is crushing on the Male Lead.
It starts out okay, he played a sport, she's like a cheerleader or something, they end up dating. But then he starts acting different. Telling her who she can hang out with, policing how she dresses-I remember in particular she wore a shorter skirt to school for him, but of course other people saw her in it too. One of the guys in the locker room made a comment on her looking hot and ML's response was to tell FL to never do it again, even straight up calling her a slut for showing herself off in front of other guys.
He got physically violent with her too. At one point after starting to isolate her from the others, while they were walking to his car he straight up hit her. I can't remember if it was implied he'd done it before, but this time multiple their friends saw him do it. Which of course causes a schism between them all.
There's also FL's mom, who has a partner, iirc dad passed away and this is a new guy. This guy is abusive and horrible to her, too, but Mom wasn't breaking up with him, i forget the stated reason why. When Mom finds out FL's relationship with ML turned toxic, Mom tries to convince her daughter that she needs to break up with him. FL says something akin to "You don't get to talk to me about abuse while you're still with him." This ends up being the trigger/wake-up call for the Mom to cut her toxic guy out of her life, and that in turn is a big step in the FL doing the same with the ML
The friend group got divided into essentially those that believed the abuse happened and those who didn't. Situations then transpired where the FL ended up being in the same place as the ML again, and he was supposed to be giving her a ride home-with someone else in the car with them. But the ML didn't take her directly home. He took them to the local lake. And he insisted that she talk to him. Alone. And she agrees. And the extra actually stays with the car.
And then the ML comes back to the car. Alone. With blood all over his hands. He killed her in a "If I can't have you no one can" rage when she wouldnt take him back.
The movie culminates in a trial. Some of the kids still side with ML, saying things like "But he was never like this before dating her; it's her fault she changed him." But ML is, of course, convicted. The judge ends up calling out a lot of what the kids did wrong, like not doing anything when they started suspecting abuse, letting her be anywhere alone with him. The overall message as I remember it was to highlight all these toxic, dangerous behaviors and tell the viewer what not to do. I'm pretty sure the movie was specifically made for the purpose of making kids watch to educate them on abusive relationships.
All this to say that SO MUCH of this movie is like the one I saw in high school. The controlling behavior, the aggression, slamming his fist on the car, "I wanna show you something" instead of taking her home-I genuinely kept having to remind myself that this was not the same movie.
TL;DR: This movie reminded me of an abuse awareness movie I saw in high school to the point I genuinely forgot at points that Noah doesn't kill her in the end.

As a younger sister of about the same age gap, I was hurt when mutual friends would choose to be closer to my big sis than to me. Especially when we were in high school.
Tho that one plus is not worth putting myself through watching this pile of toxicity. Thanks for putting yourselves through this and please don't forget your aftercare!

I love to see a video where you compile the movies where the woman actually had an appropriate and healthy reaction to a toxic or abusive man (if there are enough to compile?) because these movies are really horrifying. Having been in abusive relationships myself, the romanticization of abuse here really feels similar to how it is in a toxic relationship: in both, it's like there's a mirage where it seems loving and they say the right things, but if you stop to think about their actual actions, it's really abusive. (And same goes for non-romantic abusive relationships, like with friends, teachers, or parents.)

I actually have a very good friend who was very similar to Noah in his anger management issues during high school. His older brother committed suicide and he had a lot of anger to resolve. He would get into fights and punch objects (walls, doors.. that sort of thing) when he would get upset. Maybe because of him I am a bit more forgiving of Noah's violent outbreaks.. I was never afraid around my friend during that time, I felt completely safe that he would never harm me, which in Elle's case - having known the guy her entire life, could arguably also be the case.. I should state though that my friend made a point to learn to manage his aggression with sports, Karate, therapy and meditation - which would have been a much healthier - if more mundane and boring - story.

You mentioned it in the last one wondering why Jacob Elordi keeps getting these roles, saying if he's just a normal dude it must be weird to keep playing these guys. He genuinely seems like a good guy overall. I've seen interviews with him and he seems a pretty soft spoken, down-to-earth kind of guy. He really likes film, historical and otherwise, and he's a pretty good actor imo. I often think about why he gets these kinds of parts and honestly it's probably just his physicality -- he's a big guy 6'5" and he looks imposing on screen. I would also like to note that the casting for his romantic counterparts in both The Kissing Booth and in Euphoria are 15 inches and 11 inches shorter than him, respectively. It creates certain optics that i think are just trying to magnify physical dominance. He just physically happens to fill that space. In some interview, he talked about the focus on his physical presence/size being somewhat frustrating, actually, since it ends up taking up a lot of time that he would prefer to recenter around his performances.

"Get in the car" said only loud enough so that she can hear it, she doesn't listen, instant anger and violence, she stops and suddenly he lowers his tone, softens, and says please.
He's not just angry and violent, he's using it like a tool to manipulate her. If you'd put that scene in any other movie, it would be used to show how he's an abuser.

Saying Elle was the only thing he had that his brother didn’t is just as gross to me. He’s not a good friend to her at all.
