S1 - Ep 139 - Lutzville, a very Busy Town on the West Coast!

- We stopped off at a farm where they were harvesting tomatoes and spoke to one of the workers. He told us that they were sending the tomatoes to Durban since they can't grow them there successfully. A very interesting fact was that when grape season was over, they grew tomatoes underneath the vineyards to use the same irrigation system. Then we headed for Lutzville. This West Coast town is a very busy place. We took a drive through the town before we headed to our accommodation. We bought chips to snack on because we were starving again! We spent the night at Art Guest House and what a great place. So much effort went into making it a pleasant experience for their guests. The next morning we made a quick stop at the church and then were on our way out of Lutzville. We spotted a rocky outcrop called Vlermuisklip. Lutzville is for me the gateway to the real Westcoast....I drive form there past Koekenaap towards the Namakwa Sands Mine, then you engage 4x4, let the tyres down to 1.2, if not already done, you switch off your cellphone now and put it in the cubbyhole. Get a Tafel Lager out of the fridge, open the windows and start your slow drive north along the sea. Tonite you will park somewhere next to the beach, put up camp and start the fire. This is the life...along the most beautiful Westcoast. And yes about Vlermuisklip....I remember as a child my parents use to talk about the railway houses of Lutzville as well as of Vlermuisklip as if it was a settlement....I wish I had listened better to what they had to say. All gone now so no way to know... Thank you for reviving some memories again.

You know vome to think of it. My Namakwa experience started in Lutzville and ended between Lutzville and Vredendal were Nama Vent stood in a plantation for the last time while all the paperwork were done and the equipment were sold. Were born and grew upin Belville, started my school years there, then moved to Grabouw(beautiful, beautiful area). Then my dad started working for the De Beers sub division call Namaqwaland Ventures and the best and most beautiful time of my live started with the first town being Lutzville and there, apart from Wellington, my love for small towns started. Between Lutzville and Vredendal I for the first time saw bread being baked in a real bakoond, laught at the drunk chickens and donkey at Lutzvile Winery during "parstyd", laught at my mom when Swarrie Kotze taught her to drive on the back road going from Lutzville station to Vredendal and she found the only piece of wire to take my dad's DKW junior through and lived a charmed live up the coast from Strandfontein to Kleinzee, protected by De Beers
while searching for diamonds. Only opened up when we moved on and De Beers gave the farms back to the farmers. Met the farmer who were the first person to see Robbie Leybrant on SA soil. And so, so much more. Openness and freedom. Those were the days.
You should write down all those memories so that they're not forgotten. Precious tales like those should be passed on to future generations so that they know how free, simple and uncomplicated, yet wonderful, life was back in the day. No wonder you love small towns so much, you certainly lived in enough of them! 😍🚗
I have never been to Lutzville, but I lived in Vredensdal (about 26k away) for a short stint. The Olifantsrivier flows through many of these inland West Coast towns, and the region is also proud of its wine-making tradition. I know that some of the locals long ago made their fortune diving for diamonds along the coast.
Yes, we must've crossed the Olifants River about ten times, but I lost count eventually. 😁 We also saw evidence of diamond dredging when we explored further along the coastline close to Seal Island. Fascinating stuff! 💎 Thank you for watching! 👍

Ok backseat passenger now only got to Lutzville. Am a little behind because I seriously started traveling with you two from Hondeklipbaai. Use to live there when my dad started to work at Nama Vent. The house we stayed in were opposite the Lutzville hotel, owned by tannie Gesila Smit and then when she sold the house, we moved to the flats that you past at the stopsteet before the Lutzville Hotel. Next to the big shop on the right just after the stopstreet, were a small building that house the first library started by my mom. Next to the church, in those days, were open fields but I see it is fully built now. Went to school there both primary (from home) and highschool (boarding school) but then went to school in Wellington (birth place to both my mom and dad) at Hugenote High, when woman were allowed to go and stay with their husbands at the Nama Vent camps. Lutzville is also one of the first Namaqwaland town that I absolutly love(well the Lutzville back then) and then ofcourse the very best, Kiongnaas.
Wow, so many memories of Lutzville! Thank you for sharing them with us! Good on your mom to start the first library in town. 📚 It's a very busy place and there don't seem to be many of those open areas you refer to left. It seems as if the town is quite the economic hub in the area. Nice of you to have tagged along to Lutzville! This trip was long before Hondeklip Bay, but you're slowly catching up! 😁🚗
