  • Running watches arrive on the daily vlog today. I am not a tech guy, truly. Therefore, I'm interested in a running watch that is simple to use, does not give me too much data to sift through, and is lightweight for faster marathon training. There are some incredible running watches out there, and I need your help figuring out if I should purchase a Coros, Garmin, Suunto, Apple, or maybe another running watch brand that I have never heard of before. I must say that Coros has peaked my interest as a possible running watch to buy. Currently running in the Suunto Ambit Peak 3, a heavier watch that is designed for longer mountain runs. Alright, looking forward to your comments and ideas on my next running watch!

I just got the garmin forerunner 245 to replace my FR 235. I recommend you the FR 945 or the older 935 because it has a built in altimeter and excellent battery life.

My choice has been Polar Vantage M. Excellent battery life (over week active use), very accurate GPS, best wrist HR accuracy, all essential features for running & biking and also affordable. Plus for me that Vantage M & V can be bought with S-size strap for us with smaller wrists. Automatically syncing to both Polar Flow and Strava has been working well, no complains so far.
Polar and Suunto are both from Finland.

I have the garmin forerunner 35 and have had no problems with it. It is the most simple forerunner garmin has and it is lightweight with about 12 hours of gps engaged battery life.

I am currently using Garmin 235, its interface are just pretty simple and clean, long battery life. But a new model, Garmin 245 launches recently, the interface is totally different from the 235, it has more functions. But for someone who prefer easy and simple stuffs, the 235 would be a great choice, yet you could get it cheaper now since the newer model has came out.

I have the new Garmin 245 and it’s a very solid watch for road running. But for mountain and trail running, the 945 is the beat option for you. Garmin are expensive but they get the job done without being over complicated.

Coros Pace is a great little watch with great value. The battery lasts long enough for a full Ironman. It does temperature, elevation, VO2 max, HR, GPS, and a bunch of other things like barometric pressure. It also tracks a bunch of activities like road runs, trail runs, track workouts, interval workouts, hiking, indoor runs/bike, open water swim, triathlon etc. It's basically a more updated version of the Garmin 735 xt, with double the battery life. It is also suprisingly light and veeery easy to use. Long story short I LOVE the thing. I would look into one (they have made a bunch of updates since the review videos that are posted on TH-cam. You can look at laps and paces for each lap. P.S. I am a former Garmin user. I chose this because the value. You get so much more for the price.)

Have the Apex and love it. Battery life cannot beat for the price. Coders actually take user requests into consideration for updates.I have the Apex and will never go back to another watch. It doesn’t have a bunch of options I don’t need.

Love my Fenix 5, does everything I want it to, navigation import/export gpx and breadcrumb nav or turn by turn, data and stats, great app support, configure screens, Garmin Connect app store for specialised data screens and add ons, great battery, price on the fenix 5 is quite good now because of the newer 5x and 5 plus series. Multi sport and fitness tracker.. List goes on..

Garmin forerunner 245m here, great watch, but you would probably be better with the new 945 as it can calculate elevation better with the altimeter.

Started my watch game with TomTom Runner 2, then moved to Suunto Ambit3 Vertical and then moved to Suunto Spartan Sport WHR.
After over 2 years of using Suunto watches I bought Garmin Fenix 5 Plus last month as my tech geek cravings finally took over, but I'm very satisfied with that choice.
If you are looking for something lighter that will still provide a lot of insight for your runs I would recommend Garmin forerunner 935. After FR 945 premiere you will probably find a lot of good deals for the previous model. In case you would like to stay with Suunto I think Spartan Ultra is a great choice. Not as pricey as Suunto 9, but still gets the job done with same functions as the newer model, but it will be on the heavier side compared to Garmin.

  • @jefflambert7928

I use the Apple Watch for daily activities and the Suunto 9 for running. I like the feeling of not having to worry about battery when I’m running with the Suunto and it was more affordable than Garmin.

I would generally recommend the Garmin Fenix, but it isn't exactly light... So probably something like the garmin forerunner 935 or 945. Both are very light, packed with features and have a long battery life.

  • @RunningOtaku

Now you’re in my wheelhouse! 🤓. I recommend that you get a watch with a barometer so that it can measure altitude and vertical climb accurately. Barometers are usually found on higher end running watches, so your looking at $600+ ...and all of those watches aren’t that ‘simple’. They tend to have confusing menus and a whole bunch of features that you’ll never use. In addition, I think you’d benefit from a Stryd footpod (another $200) for the following reasons- accurate pace/distance when running in deep canyons and power metric for maintaining an even effort level in mountain races. The Garmin 5s Plus or Suunto 9 Baro are good choices. I haven’t tried the Coros lineup yet, so I cannot vouch for it.

Seth, I have been a die hard Garmin user for 8 years including using the Garmin Fenix 5 for the past year. About a week ago, a running store reached out to me and asked if I would like to test the Coros Apex. I have used the Apex for 5 runs now including a 26 mile trail run. I have to say the Apex is on par if not better in every way over the Fenix 5. On the 26 mile training run, it only used 12% of the battery, and it was a 5 hour run. Super light, and just a great bang for the buck.

I've been using an old, old Suunto Vector for the past 12 years. It's been running that long! Anyway, I decided to upgrade my watch for fitness and simple smart watch features. I ended up getting a Suunto 5 because it was just being released this year, it had fitness/sport, sleep tracking, and stress/recovery tracking. I don't need temp, baro, alti. So, the Suunto 5 was the perfect amount of data, simple to use, and not as big and bulky as the Suunto 9 or some Garmin watches I've seen. I love the look of it way more than an Apple Watch, but the Suunto 5 is a bit pricey for what it does in my opinion.

I currently have the garmin forerunner 235. It is the best running watch I've ever had. It has a long battery life and is very simple to use. It has an app where you look at your runs and take a look at your pace and such. My favourite feature is the race predictor, it predicts your 5km, 10km, half, and full marathon times. It's a great price for the quality too.

Gosh, this video makes me feel hopelessly old-fashioned! Compared to me, you’re a technical wizard. My running watch is a … well, a stopwatch. It measures minutes and seconds. It doesn’t track distance or pace or heart rate or altitude or gamma radiation or anything other than the passage of time. The battery is non-rechargeable and has to be replaced every few years.
That’s all I’ve ever felt the need for. About fifteen years ago, I did finally get a watch that could record laps and spits, and I’ve found that useful for track workouts. It’s certainly an improvement over the wind-up analog stopwatch I carried in my right hand when I first started running distance. Oh, one day, I’ll probably break down and get something more sophisticated. But maybe not: when I go running with GPS-wearing friends, I find that my mere guesses about how far we’ve gone and the pace we’re running matches up pretty well with what their gizmos are telling them.

Suunto Spartan Ultra user here. Only watch I’ve ever owned so can’t really say what it does better than others BUT I find it very simple and extremely inclusive when it comes to features and use cases. That being said, I do like how the Coros Apex (seems like their take on the Spartan Ultra) has a noticeably smaller profile and is much lighter but still doesn’t compromise on battery life. Seems like Coros has caught on to this but the next big feature I’m looking for is music streaming/storage, something the Apple Watch users have over all of us that somehow isn’t standard on the upper tiers of these watches. I’m a techy guy though so this whole thing may not even apply. You get what you pay for so if you want something simple, stay on that penny pinching grind and go for a shiny new timex 👌

I got the heart rate band after a while as I wanted to check a bit more the heart rate during trainings (but now sensor is broken..) so back to use how I feel. Since you're not an extreme data nut, but would still like general running information, really consider the Garmin Forerunner 245. I use the Fenix 5 and it's a bit on the heavy side, but has several other exercises (and golf) which I frequently use. The 245 is very lightweight and gives you an adequate amount of information about your run.

I use a garmin forerunner 645 music with the running pod for extra stats. Honestly the stats are most of my motivation to keep going. I'd look at a 645 or new 945. However I dont feel they are worth the price. I know someone that works at garmin. If you do or have a garmin employee following you maybe they can help you out. At 45% off they are definitely worth it! I get 7-10 days battery life with about 4-5 hours gps use a week. 945 has even more battery life I believe.

The Garmin Fenix 5s is my favorite watch I’ve had. I’m intrigued by Coros. But I have so many years of running history in Garmin that unless they have a way to transfer it all, it’d be hard for me to ever switch. However, I will switch to Apple if they ever make their battery last as long as Garmin. I had one and loved all its smartwatch & fitness features except for running. If they improve battery and add more running insights built in, I’d be sold.

I started more serious running with Polar M200, later gave it to my sis and switched to Garmin 235 - light and really good for road running (ran my first 50k with it as well), but no altitude there. I just got the Garmin 945 after having the 935. I like to listen to music while training and the mapping is great with the 945. (Very expensive though) I also own a Garmin 645 music which is great for marathon training and has an altimeter, but lacks some other things that I think would be essential for mountain running. (Less expensive than the 945 and around the same price as the 935) Agree with Rodrigo below. 945 and 935 has an excellent battery life with the ability to switch into Ultra Trac GPS mode for those really long treks and is very light considering all it can do. Unfortunately, you will get tons of data, but you can always ignore and or shut most of the metrics off if you want to simplify things. Coros looks compelling, but it looks like they are a little inconsistent at this point. DC Rainmaker has good reviews on all of the leading providers.

I use Polar Vantage M which is really good for my use, however for mountain running you should check the Vantage V which has an altimeter (M model uses gps to get altitude and it is not as precise)

I would say COROS Apex, I have the 46mm version. The difference between the 46mm and 42mm version is the battery life and the cost. The 42mm could be a good Choice because the battery life is,if I am not wrong, something like 25hours instead of 35 for the 46mm. The 42mm version is also weighter.

Fitbit Ionic Adidas edition is what I use. It's very simple, it tracks vertical, weight's not that bad once you wear it in, but idk, might not be as high quality as you want.

I second everyone who has said the Garmin 235. It's a workhorse and super affordable, especially considering all the tech it offers. I recently upgraded to a 935, which is a really great device that I plan on using for as long as it holds up. I love everything about Garmin watches, except for the notifications feature, which I just choose not to use. I had an Apple Watch series 2 for a while, but the battery life was just so weak.

All the Garmin forerunners are great watches. The Garmin 935 and 945 have great battery life. But the Garmin FR35 dose pretty much all you need if you only care about pace, time, heart rate and cadence.

I bought Amazfit Verge for $116. Pretty good budget watch with features and accuracy of much more expensive big brand watches. Price is cheap because version 2 is coming. This watch was introduced like 6 months ago, so it is pretty much almost the same with the new incoming version.

I went from the Garmin Fenix 5x to the Coros Apex. I was really nervous since I loved my Garmin but the thing was just to damn heavy. From my first run I new I made the right choice. So light and comfortable I genuinely forget it is on my wrist a lot. The app is amazing as well. It has some fun data but overall is so so simple to use and interpret. Plus it has a trainer in the watch that will go through warm ups, intervals and more. Totally love it and they are so cheap compared to the other top brands with similar features. Last thing is the battery. I ran a 55k that took me 7.5 hours in the highest GPS mode and when I finished the battery was still at 89%. I hardly ever have to charge this thing. They are amazing!

I personally use the Apple Watch Series 4 which was a big step up from the Series 2 i had previously. However i don't think it's the best fit for you'r use case because of the battery life. I know a ton of people super happy with Garmin (likely offers more data than you're interested in but the basics of course are there) and Garmin has it's own social platform. Not sure how much use it gets. I think just about anything that has a touch screen is not going to have the battery life you'll want. I listen to music or books almost every time i go out and i can do that with just my watch and no phone. Garmin now also offers media storage on select models as well.

But for what it is worth the garmin is a great brand and the garmin connect app is what I love the most about it.

Not sure if you’re already aware of this or not but Garmin’s lower end watches (45 and 645) probably won’t work for you because they do not have a barometric altimeter. So they can’t accurately track vertical climb.
The 645 would be perfect for you in my opinion. It is small, light, has a pretty large battery, and has a barometric altimeter. Many similar watches from other brands seem to be too chunky. My 2¢, call me a Garmin fanboy.

I wonder how much of a market there is out there for a super, super simple watch that only (1) tells the current time and (2) can act as a stopwatch? I was able to find a $10 or so watch at a large Walmart, but it is bulky and kind of heavy. I recently learned about the Stanford engineers who created a $0.68 malaria testing kit, with (mostly) paper microscope and centrifuge. Surely a super simple and super lightweight watch could be made along similar lines, and could be of interest to runners and the like?

I have a Garmin Vivoactive 3 music. I like to pop in headphones on a run without worrying about brining my phone. I only have 2 gripes with it. Battery Life and GPS signal. I often lose signal in the mountains. I did a 10 mile run on Saturday with about 3k vert. It tracked 2 hours of my 3 hour activity 👎. Also, on longer adventures it doesn't last. Died on a 14 mile trail run and barely made it through the grand canyon. I hear great things about the Coros Apex in terms of tracking and battery life. Probably my next watch, whenever that time comes.

Garmin Forerunner 245 Music from REI so you get 10% back for next years dividend ... bought the black one for me and the teal on for the wife.
Bought this watch specifically for marathon training. It is small on your wrist, lightweight, can set workouts on your phone, sync to your watch and it notifies you on everything.
Even has emergency functions which notifies help in any scenario!

Not having any experience with another brand, I really do love my Garmin Forerunner 935. It weighs half the amount of your Sunnto (49g), with great battery life and all the functions and widgets you need (I think you can survive without music and colourized maps). It's a few years old now, so there are probably "better" watches out there at the moment, but the price on the other hand should be a bit cheaper aswell.

Every running watch has its moments, no watch is perfect. Coros watches seem great, but I've seen some dodgy HR and GPS tracks, just the same as other manufacturers. Just get a watch that has the features to support your adventures, that's what matters. i.e. mountain runner will probably want Barometer.

Definitely not Apple or Samsung over every other. My friend actually went through your dilemma a couple of months ago. He purchased a watch of each brand: Suunto, Garmin, Polar, and Coros. His final conclusion, no one could really stack up to the Garmin. He ended up getting one of the new Garmins that were just released. He is an avid runner avg in the 80mpw range and is hoping to run a 2:29 marathon for CIM in his debut
