For the actual headwaters, continue down that forest road to Stoney Pass. The road is quite rough in several places, but that pass is absolutely gorgeous, and the start of the Rio Grande is a really neat area.

You are correct. Driven Stony Pass Road twice and it is indeed a gorgeous highcountry area and it's amazing to rock hop across the upper headwaters.
