South Rim
Overnight backpacking trip in Big Bend National Park. This is a last-minute change of plans hike as I had mistakenly booked a site for the wrong date for this trip. I didn’t discover my mistake until I was halfway to the park, but I was luckily able to book another site while driving to the park the morning of my hike.
My new plan is to do a South Rim loop hike going clockwise taking the Pinnacles and Boot Canyon trials to the South Rim. Taking the South Rim trail to the Colima trail and using the Colima trail to get back to my campsite at Boot Canyon. Day 2 I will be retracing my steps back down the Boot Canyon and Pinnacles trails to the Chisos Basin Backpacker parking lot.
Total mileage for the trip was 13.2 miles and an elevation gain of 3,148’.

To beat the West Texas heat I drove to Northern New Mexico for a quick trip in the Pecos Wilderness. With a highpoint of 11,840 feet and the July monsoon weather bring daily rain this trip was a nice departure from the triple digit temps in Texas. Starting from the Jacks Creek Trailhead I climbed to Pecos Baldy Lake and set up camp in time to escape an afternoon thunderstorm. On day two, what I...

Great overnight trip. Very cool that you saw multiple bears! And pretty fortunate that you were still able to get a site. And a pretty good one at that. I might have to get in a trip to the Basin if possible before May. If not, itll be a long hike up to the mountains from the desert. But will likely be a lot less people up in the Chisos.

I thought the same thing. Hard to get up there from the desert but you’d probably have it to yourself. I counted over 100 people on trail while hiking down the Pinnacles trail. So maybe not a bad thing to have to work a little harder to get up there.

I dont know how i have never seen this video. I do monthly or weekly searches for new videos at Guadalupe Mountains and somehow I have never seen this. Really neat video. Geez that western face of the Guads is so epic. And that point you were talking about being always windy, I would feel pretty confident saying that is the windiest point in the park. The story of Geronimo's duggout was neat. Its been years since ive been out that way. But i have Shumard booked in December. So I may dp some looking around in Guadalupe Canyon on my way out. Very interesting. Looking forward to seeing you at the meetup this weekend. There will be several of us GUMO enthusiasts there. It'll be fun to swap some stories.

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for the update on the off trail rules. Some of the most ridiculous rules in the NP System. $150 is a joke. But they know it. That's why they set it so high. I had high hopes for the previous Superintendent but it didn't workout like I had hoped. Hopefully the rules are rolled back soon. I haven't stayed at the Tejas Campsites in years. I always tell myself I'm going to on my next trip. But it never works out like that. They really are nice for getting out of the wind. Awesome to have them all to yourself. Thanks again!

Really enjoyed watching. I did the exact same route on my very first backpacking trip a couple of years ago. Hiking up Bear Canyon in July wasn't my best idea, but I survived 😂. I saw that herd of aoudad climbing through the Tejas arch a couple of months ago! The new rules you mentioned are holding up a lot of my plans in the park, so I'm very hopeful they hire a competent superintendent soon. The permit office hasn't responded to me or my friends' inquiries for off trail permits. I bet they haven't issued a single one since the rule was implemented. Thanks for sharing & have a good one!

Really enjoyed the video. Looked like a great overnight. I love that section of the park; although I've only done Marcus and the main part of Blue Ridge once. Blue Ridge is also the only campsite I've never spent the night at. I enjoyed seeing your time around camp and your gear. Those are usually my favorite parts of backpacking videos. Your microphone worked pretty well. I noticed your hangtime hook in your tent. How do you like it? I've been wanting to get one of those. I never hang my food while backpacking out there. I've only seen a skunk in the backcountry once. The past couple times I've camped at Pine Springs and Dog Canyon I've had lots of skunk encounters. I definitely keep my food in my car. They're annoying. The turkey was a really cool experience. That would have made the whole trip. I've only seen them from the truck while at Dog Canyon. I still tend to think there is more wildlife overall on that side of the park. At least I tend to run into more. Can't wait to get back out there. I appreciate inspiration from your video. If youre interested, you should join us at our Texas Backpacking TH-cam Meetup later in the fall. We're hoping to get together at Lost Maples for a weekend in November.
