Hello my best beloveds, are you tucked up and ready for a bedtime story? (What do you mean it's only 4pm?! Get those bloody PJs on now! ) I'm going to tuck you in...yes, the restraints are necessary...and tell you a nice fairytale. And if you're still not asleep after that, I've tagged on a whole 'nother story as a bonus! Hope you enjoy. If you're interested, I'll be sharing my thoughts about this episode TOMORROW on my Postmortem for TH-cam members and Patreons. (Would have shared it today, but I haven't recorded it yet.) Stay spooky - J
Thank you for this. Home sick and tucked in for a most rewarding listen. I appreciate your stories and always eagerly anticipate and I'm m never disappointed!
I’m the youngest of 5 children and now I know what must of happened. By the time I grew up the second mother was already in residence! Bloody children, who’d have ‘em. Thankyou for another treat.
Creepy af and read very well. Not so bad having a head cold on the holidays because of this gift. Thank you everyone who made this possible. I am a little less lonely.
@kblake6841 To clarify: I'm not sure if I would consider the authors you mentioned as writers of "horror" or "weird" authors. Aside from Gilman and Jackson of the "Yellow Wallpaper" and "The Lottery," respectively; the list is a bit short. Mary Shelley is obvious, but beyond that... I'd like to read or listen to more.
I still cannot get over the fact that you are back my friend I literally have listened to every story you've done like 10 times my favourites are Mr meldrums mania and the cairn but of course your own originals most of all :D I hope you are keeping well bro👍
Oh gosh I remember doing the Flypaper story with a reading group I used to facilitate. I spent so much time reading short stories in those days, trying to find suitable ones. I thought that the Flypaper was one of the most chilling I’d ever encountered. Very cleverly written - we get quite a detailed description of Sylvia, despite its brevity, including the fact that she’s already given up on her life ever getting any better. The flypaper with some of the flies still half alive was such an apt metaphor. I remember my terrible shock when “Herbert” turned up for tea.Elizabeth Taylor wrote some pretty good stories I think, they’re very much of their time and class but there are some real gems amongst them. Thanks so much for reminding me of this, I remembered as soon as you said the title, but still felt my blood run cold when Herbert arrived for tea, despite expecting him!
Fantastic story. Lucy Clifford has peopled her dark tales with archetypes I never knew existed. The girl in the village is horrible and upsetting trouble. Older kids, so dangerous. I don't know where you went cos I've only just happened upon you yet I'm pleased you have been able to return. Another great story teller along the lines of Tony Walker, who is an absolute favourite. Happy new subscriber.
I read a version of this story as a kid, in More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz. But that version doesn't have the vividness of the imagery of this one. Strangely, Schwartz just lists the story as traditional and doesn't credit Clifford. So I'm very glad you read this one, it's wonderful!
Thanks so much Jasper, you're a life-saver. Had a shocking week as a result of technology misbehaving and I am mentally exhausted. This will be perfect. Will be tucked in shortly-ish!
Two truly twisted tales! Your narrations are masterfully done and your sound effects drag me through the wormhole. Today's double feature was astoundingly disturbing and horrific. Thanks ever so for another wonderful recording!
😅Yay!! Fascinating title…. I am instantly drawn into wanting to hear more! I love this one already! Sounds too good in the cottage I sense that all is not as it seems😱lol 💫💛💫
Goodness! These were a pair of very dark tales indeed! That second one...gave me the horrors like one of Flannery O'Connor's darkest. Perhaps those of us who have had narrow escapes of our own have a uniquely stomach-churning sense of the impending trap to be sprung. Well done, Sir. You have pulled no punches with either of these, and it's given me food for thought this evening.
Another (back to back) great recording - needless to say - Mr. L'Estrange. Good god... The FlyPaper indeed. Eee... I recall as a wee boy, back on a particularly windswept evening in southern NZed, watching FlyPaper as part of Dahl's Unexpected. Disturbed the living sh*t outta me. Your narration last night had rather similar results; maybe moreso in that, as with the intervening decades, the all too plausible realities of such a story can strike one a bit harder. Onya Jasper, as always.
A thoroughly enjoyable listen. Blue eyes and Turkey are not quite as intriguing as the Werret girls, but they’re still a memorable pair - many thanks for the reading
Well I'm *not going to bed, so there!* Mostly on account of when I started listening, I had only just gotten out of it. Finally had a chance to listen until the bitter ends while I work at weeding (I'm a twitch Witch! Out by the roots! no sissy weed whackers). Truly creepy tales. Should be more like em I say. 👍🇦🇺👷🏼♀️😎
The addition of the bonus story reminded me of a question I wanted to ask: how many bonus Patreon exclusive stories do you have? Are you still producing new ones? I remember listening to a teaser for Alfred Noyes' "Midnight Express" and I think you had a post a while back and I'd like to hear it.
Hi John, I think I only did about 8 or 9 bonus stories. I always mean to do more but it's hard enough getting the main ones out 😆 so now I'm making the Postmortem episodes the exclusive content, although I have earmarked a few exclusive stories to do over the coming months 👍
You really are a talented bugger, Mr LeStrange. Enjoyed these immensely, especially The New Mother - did you know this was a children's story...?!!?😳 (Wikipedia '"The New Mother" is a short story written by Lucy Clifford and first published in her collection of children's stories, The Anyhow Stories, Moral and Otherwise in 1882.') Taylor is an absolute legend for scene setting. Her short stories are 👌
@@EnCryptedHorrorBlimey... you won't find this little gem on how to control unruly children in the good parenting guide. I hope you perform more of her short stories. ✌️
Isn’t this the kind of fable that once taught to a few could keep many out of trouble. It is, I believe, a bit like the grass is greener… Lesson(s) learned…but I have/had met The New Mother, though I happened to be lucky enough that her daughter had left, so we shared in our shadow dance with love & grace.
Sorry Jasper, this one is too disturbing for me, going to take a pass on it. Made it to tea time kids want to be naughty and wigged out - I don't want to know what's happening. There's scary and then there's heart break disturbing loss of innocence - which is where I imagine the story is going. Found my weakness.
That's the MO here. Other people comment on how much they like them. It's not all about you. There are countless other narrators out there to choose from who don't "do voices". Cheers.

💛🧡♥️
Thank you, Jasper ((hugs)) 🤗 (it’s a bit of a stretch to actually get my arms around you... being restrained and all 😉) Sweet Dreams!
Yes I'm tucked into bed and my kitty is not. She only sleeps with me when it's cold.
Thank you for another Double Plus Good Time story (time).
❤
Absolutely terrifying. No room for mistakes! Poor children…
For some reason, as I was listening, I got to thinking this was a Slavic folk tale. Good story
Yup. These answered the mail. Quite scary and terrifying! No blood and gore, just the craftful use of language.
The end of the second story...oh my!
The New Mother was one of the most unique stories I've ever listened to. It was amusing at first and increasingly disturbing.
The first story was heartbreaking. And both were totally creepy. Shiver.
Well, it is almost dark where I live & the sky looks like it is on fire from the sunset ... perfect setting for these creepy tales.
These were disturbing yet excellent. Female authors are very much underappreciated both now and then.
Thank you!
So true!🙏
What you mean like Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters, Agatha Christie, J K Rowling :)

Welcome 👋
I am home sick and tucked in in eager anticipation. I am never disappointed in your stories. Thank you Jasper, I'm feeling better already!
That was utterly terrifying, Jasper. What did you call her? Lucy Clifford. I've got the creeps and night is falling. Have to share this....
Yes, I haven't established whether Clifford was also retelling a much older traditional tale, but I agree, her version is striking and memorable.
You had me at ‘the’. Bloody loved this J. Thank you xx❤👻
Thanks so much Jasper, you're a life-saver. Had a shocking week as a result of technology misbehaving and I am mentally exhausted. This will be perfect. Will be tucked in shortly-ish!
Relaxed on a Sunday evening listening to a Jasper L'Estrange reading. Thank you, a real Bonus

Indeed, I used that very word to describe his sound design- horrific! But wormhole is apt.
😅Yay!! Fascinating title…. I am instantly drawn into wanting to hear more! I love this one already! Sounds too good in the cottage I sense that all is not as it seems😱lol 💫💛💫
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful story and you’re reading is by far the best one I’ve since listened to others but they’re no match ❤
Thank you! It was brand-new to me too. I was quite surprised to find so many other recordings.
What a wonderful way to end a sleepy Sunday 💜
Once again, Jasper saves my life.
That one was TERRIFYING! Right up there with Tarnhelm for that strangely disturbing, dry-rot childhood specificity!
glass eyes and a wooden tail was terrifying as a child ... love how you read these stories
yassss ☠️☠️☠️ youtube was made lesser by ur absence JL'E; so glad u back 🔥🔥🔥
Brilliant as ever . Thank you Jasper ❤
Excellent choice, Jasper. A fairly obscure story, that I first encountered on the old Pseudopod podcast.
Brilliant stories - superb narration as always from Jasper. Recommended.

Thanks for the outstanding production! Creepy, so creepy...
Soooo glad you came back
Wonderful! Two stories I hadn't heard before. Thank you. I always look forward to your narrations.
Great! Thank you kindly 🙏
That was so weird and creepy, my favourite combo from my favourite narrator. Why did their mother just up and go?
Another (back to back) great recording - needless to say - Mr. L'Estrange. Good god... The FlyPaper indeed. Eee... Thank you Jasper!!! That grim duo was a perfect Sunday treat!
Yes!! Tucked up and a new story 🎉❤
I’m so excited you recorded these - I haven’t heard either in so long and they’re told so well here!
Blimey Jasper, I'll be needing Teddy tonight after that! 🤣
A thoroughly enjoyable listen. Blue eyes and Turkey are not quite as intriguing as the Werret girls, but they’re still a memorable pair - many thanks for the reading
Blue eyes and Turkey we a pain in the arse and deserved all they got !! Great read again mate and loved the singing sections 😮😅
Haha! Don't encourage me or I'm going to look specifically for stories that include singing 🎵
Encrypted the Musical ....its got legs ...😅😅😅
Excellent……..a twofer 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've done live public readings of this one; yours is better than mine
But live public reading is an art form and skill in itself. Hats off to you! 👌
Brilliant!! 👏🏻
Thank you 🙏
My heart actually dropped at the twist of The Fly Paper. What happened next???
nothing good
Just what I need.
Well I'm *not going to bed, so there!*
Mostly on account of when I started listening, I had only just gotten out of it.

Yes, and I think I read somewhere that Turkey and Blue Eyes were the pet names of her own children and she wrote this for them 😁.

Circa then respectively. If so thanks!
I'll be on my best behaviour for the rest of the month and won't be talking to any strangers (even if I am a 50 year-old man).
