I used to live in Yangon and was trained by Lone Chaw, the Lethwei world champ. I was a Muay thai fighter before that. To be honest the fighting standard in Thailand is way higher but Lethwei is brutal. You can't notch up 200++ fights in Lethwei like you can in Muay Thai as you would be dead.

@@quinnlaya331 Truth is top Thai fighter can beat Lethwei fighter easily, even without head butt. Because Lethwei's purse is minimal, top ranking muaythai fighters are not interested in competing in Lethwei organized fights. Muaythai in Thailand is immensely popular, and to reach top ranking you must be especially talented. Also more fights under your belt = more experience. Burmese Lethwei fighters do not have this opportunity to cut their teeth on. Witness Dave Leduc who was a nobody muaythai fighter, but quickly became a Lethwei champion.

    • @FGCTekken
      @FGCTekken 4 ปีที่แล้ว +102

@@Supbrozki This isn't exactly true. Gloves spread the force across the face meaning it has less direct energy transfer thus meaning lower chance of knock out. However, the spring effect from the glove delivers more force than bare knuckles. More force with less chance to get knocked out equals more brain damage because even though you are not getting knocked out you are still being concussed.

    • @Supbrozki
      @Supbrozki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +77

@@FGCTekken With the force spread out it makes it more likely to hit the knockout spot thought, the gloves also have some weight to them which increases force. But most importantly, fighters tend to punch alot harder with gloves on that protect their hands. Without gloves they subconsciously pull their punches a bit as to not risk breaking their hands.

He's an utter beast in Lethwei now. If you go back and watch his matches from like 4 years back, then his most recent ones. He has evolved. That right flying elbow fake out, dip down left hook is a monster. He jumps into a fake out elbow, which helps generate power into his left hook. 2- Tries MMA but for the first time he has to face a guy of the same size loses in a one-sided fight. MMA too conpetitive, it s not for him
3- He travels to Myanmar fights like 10 fights in Lethwei (a version of muay thai with poor boxing but good headbuts) wins 5 times against smaller guys. Now he talks as if he was the best striker on the planet.

He didn’t make it to the “Big League” though, because guess what! He was financially struggling and fight money in Muay Thai simply sucks.
After his first three Lethwei fights, he was already living rich.
Oh yeah, all his opponents in Lethwei were smaller than him, but in his debut in WLC, he fought a bigger opponent, he knocked that guy out anyway to claim his first WLC title.

Umm no, Dave. As much as I think you're a good fighter and seem like a nice person, you weren't winning the striking exchange in the fight you're referring to. I'd also like to point out that you keep catching Lethwei fighters with a spinning elbow. That's the same technique Enriko Kehl used in a Muay Thai tournament and kept winning with it, because people didn't know how to react to it. Until he faced Buakaw (and later challenged him to a farce of a kickboxing match). I think what you bring to the table is unpredictability. Which is good. But I'm just saying that you couldn't win in the MMA matches (although you did win one iirc) because they knew what you were doing. Had they allowed headbutts like in the original cage fights, you'd definitely be in your element a lot more, but on the other hand, the MMA fighters would also be practicing for that. Food for thought. Btw, be careful not to get a permanent head injury from Lethwei, as from what I've understood, all the headbutting and no gloves make for a very rattled brain. Good luck.

@leslie alcantara Uninformed and ignorant comment. You seem to confuse height with weight. If you imply that Dave fought bigger guys in MMA and only won in Lethwei because some guys where shorter, it couldn't be further from the truth. Dave's first mma fight was at 170lbs with no weight cut, against a heavier highly experience fighter who eventually went to UFC. Second fight, was his first attempt at cutting weight, to 155lbs, Dave was severely dehydrated and got caught with a lucky blow while locking a triangle choke. In to Lethwei he always fought at his walking 175lbs (80kg) and even fought a 91kg opponent while he was 80kg. All his opponent were same weight or heavier. If he would cut weight like all other fighters, he woud compete at 72-75kg (160-165lbs).

I think the similarities come more from the fact that the countries are so close. Originally all these styles where similar. But history has changed the path of many of these countries. British colonialism almost strangled Burmese martial arts. Lethwei tradition have been kept alive not by the Burmese but by the Karen. Where as Thailand was never colonized. But instead changed their martial art into a competitive ring sport that has garnered fighters a livable revenue. Now that Burma is opening up to the west, we will see how lethwei will change to get more audience, competitors and money in. Off course, lethwei needs to distinguish itself from Muay Thai, so I guess it will stay more brutal.

Not true! Thai and Burmese haven’t been fighting for thousands of years. Thailand is less than a thousand years old. At the time when Cambodia ruled Southeast Asia, Thailand did not exist yet. Muay Thai is originated in Cambodia, check out the art on the wall of the temples. In the 90’s Laos and Cambodia asked the ASEAN committee to renamed Muay Thai as Sovannaphoum Boxing, but Thailand disagreed because they wanted to claim the art.

Won on the stage but disabled when older. Head is an important part must to be saved for all sports. For a long time is not good for long life, so the headbutt and bare knuckle were removed from Muay Thai sport over 100 years ago. So some Thai boxers can fight every months on the ring or one and a half month and somes can fight over 250-300 fights in their life. Muay Thai boxers have still good health when there are old. They can be trainers for younger boxers later.

What this guy forgot to tell you is that the Thais who fight in Burma are not top-level fighters. If you were to put the strongest Lethwei champion (Tun Tun Min) against a strong Nak Muay (Singdam, for instance) there would probably be no story. There is a reason why technique is so important: because flawless technique enhances power and maximizes efficiency, whereas brutality works only on the weak, inexperienced ones. The Angkor Wall depicts a man fighting a lion.
Laos, Burma, Thailand and Cambodia don't have lions.
      India has lions.
And the picture in the wall probably tells the origins of boxing from India.
Thailand has received many cultures from India.
Ramayana, Khon and others, Muay Thai may be influenced by Kalaripayattu of India,
which is more than 2,000 years old, it's a hand-to-hand and armed combat.
Muay Thai has been improved over time for use in combat during war. Different people have different styles. Therefore, Muay Thai is different as follows.
      Muay Thai Boran Styles
      th-cam.com/video/TPkQvzHmnSI/w-d-xo.html (Part 1)
      th-cam.com/video/Od0R8-2BBqc/w-d-xo.html (Part 2)
Cambodia has been occupied by Thais for about 400 years if Khmer boxing is really good. Why is it a colony of Thailand for hundreds of years? Later it was a French colony.

Cambodia is therefore influenced by Kalaripayattu of India and Thai arts.

Lethwei, Muay Thai, Muay Laos, Kun Khmer. Whatever you call.
    For us it’s means “Boxing”
Historical Fact was the Land in between India and Vietnam to Singapore developed this as a way of fighting for at least 500 years and likely to be before 1300s. Which even before Thai Kingdoms ever exist.
King of Ayutthaya kingdom in Thailand used to be the “King of Kings” until lose to Burma in 2 occasions in 1569 and 1767
This boxing still continuous practice widely in all of this area until today.
This wasn’t impose to “colonised” country as he said. This is not like “Siamisesation” as Thailand did to Cambodia for 300 years before the French took Cambodia as their colony in 1863.
The Burmese Viceroy were relatively short lived due to political infighting , over concentration of power and failure to centralise state.
During era of “European Colonisation” King Rama V of Siam standardised the rule of boxing to wear 8oz. gloves and no head butted to be comparable to European after diplomatic match between Siam and French Cambodia resulted in the death of Cambodian fighter.
Therefore no one really had a concrete prove where this boxing came from. It just evolved over time.

Agree it a style; each country have their own style. Through time each style grew a part and become very unique though.

Ancient Burma never conquered the Khmer empire but the same goes for Burma. But the largest Southeast Asian empire was the Khmers. And Khmers practiced Bokator and Predal Serey.

Bokator is most likely the "original" southeast Asian kickboxing. Why? The khmer/Cambodia empire was the largest and oldest empire of southeast Asia for a long period of time. Then the Burmese gained power after the Khmer empire went into decline. The same techniques you see in muay thai, lethwei etc are all in bokator/kun khmer. But Bokator is a system that also has weapons training and is meant for war. The kickboxing aspect was specialized in the boxing ring as kun khmer. Difference is Khmer had taken over all of southeast Asia and parts of Burma, maybe that's where Lethwei and all the other "muay" kickboxing got some ideas and roots.

Wrong the largest empire in SEA is the kong bong dynasty of burma. And also lethwei is older than bokator. Bokator was created around 12th century while lethwei was created at the time of pyu which is like 2000years ago. Lethwei was not a system back in the day. It would be more like ancient MMA but there were barely any rules. Only win and lose exist. The word lethwei translate to "blood stained hand" or "bloody hand" as practioners fight bare knuckles and bleeds from their hands. And the rest is kinda the oppsite of everything u said.

Cambodia claims that Thai arts and culture are Khmer all the time.

Cambodia has been occupied by Thais for about 400 years if Khmer boxing is really good. Why is it a colony of Thailand for hundreds of years? Later it was a French colony.

Cambodia is therefore influenced by Kalaripayattu of India and Thai arts.
I have watched Bogator boxing. I almost died laughing so hard I couldn't stop.

@@mamaisookjai4609 No kalaripayattu has no resemblance with lethwei, muay thai and bokator. Kalaripayattu is mostly weaponized martial art. All three of the above unarmed and they were more of a combat sport/system. Thai used krabi and krabong as armed system during ayutthya age. And burmese used bando and banshay for war during their kong bong age. About the lion thing u are correct about three of the countries not having lions. But i believe the lion u talking about is fabled lion beast i think its called dog of fo,chinthae from buddhism(buddhism came from india). Most buddhist country have that lion statue infront of their pagodas.

You said "All three of the above unarmed "
I said "may be influenced by Kalaripayattu of India"
Kalaripayattu differs from many other martial arts systems in that weapon based techniques are taught first, and barehanded techniques are taught last. In the past, Thailand mainly taught how to use weapons and boxing was also taught to defend yourself without weapons.
Kalaripayattu, its birth anywhere between 200 BCE and 600 CE, and its cresting popularity between the 14th and 16th centuries. But what has never varied, is the awe with which chroniclers and poets of different periods recorded the complexity of the techniques, the liquid beauty of the moves, and the enviable elasticity of the practitioners of Kalaripayattu.
