The BMW M3 GTR doesn't just have a voice. It has a chord. Two distinct sounds harmonizing flawlessly. The absolute blender of an engine, and the banshee whine of the straight-tooth transmission gears. Carbon did it better, in my opinion.
while i agree that between MW and Carbon, Carbon had the better M3 sound, i think NFS Heat released back in 2018 did a better job than both of them in MW, you hear more of the actual engine than the straight cut gears in Carbon, you hear more of the straight cut gears than the actual engine in Heat, you hear a perfect combination of both
For those that don't know, the M3 GTR actually uses a sound sample from a TVR Speed Eight. Their in-house replacement for the Rover pattern V8 they used previously after it was discontinued. No idea how/why they got their hands on or wanted to use a Chimera 4.2L for the sound of the M3 since TVRs aren't common even in Europe let alone North America and it doesn't even sound similar to the M3 GTR used in official races. but it is an absolutely fantastic sound. stick straight cut gears on a TVR Speed Eight an you get the sound from NFSMW

EA only publishes games their companies do, Blackbox makes the NFS games. SMS used to be one of their companies which made the Shift saga. Nowadays independent, they make games for the Project CARS saga.

They tuned the car so it would be more realistic... i mean Darius' R8 Quattro can get a top speed of ~400 kmh so it would be silly for a M3 GTR to reach the top speed it gets in Most Wanted (389kmh)
MW'05 is better, because i can hear the engine and whine is just minor addition and not loud shite that covers up the true music which is ofcourse the engine sound. I like Carbon still tho, just one of things that should be fixed about it(PS2 had MW'05's whine kept so it's better :v)
NFSMW gives you a pretty heavy choice in the Volumes setting. Either lower the Music volume and hear the roar of your cars, but miss out on the Soundtrack, or Higher the Music volume so you can jam out to Decadence as you shift past your opponents, but miss out on the Roar of your car while doing so.
I like MW more since it sounds so powerful, and the fact that the game makes it look like it actually has speed to it; NFSC makes it appear as if you are going 40 mph at all times
I like Carbon’s, it sounds cool at high rpm with straight cut gears. I might change my mind after I unlock the gtr on ps2 and race with it, but I probably prefer the loud gears

NFS Most Wanted feels like you are watching the car from the outside hearing the roaring wheezing sounds from the gearbox. NFS Carbon feels like you are inside the car and hearing all the RAW POWER of the M3 GTR. Both did great. EA Black Box was the greatest NFS creator ever.
What they did with the BMW in Carbon was that they lowered its top speed because unlike MW, Carbon/Palmont's tracks are tighter and have less straights, meaning the car makes up in cornering for what it lacks in speed. Though if that's the case, why is the transmission howl so much more intense? Lol, the logic.

Well, if you think about it. Palmont was not really made for cars to be extremely fast, as it's got more bumpy roads, shorter straights and tighter corners that are made for aerodynamics and downforce compared to Rockport where there's more highways, longer straights, and less tight turns that are made for the cars to reach their true high end top speed. So, overall the M3 that lacked speed in Carbon from it's faster counterpart in Most Wanted, makes up for responsive handling.
Carbon came after in the saga and since then they made the GTR's engine sound like the actual engine in real life. There is a video on TH-cam of the BMW M3 GTR doing a lap in Germany.
