I was working in a group home, and the manager insisted on buying scented detergent and heavily scented dryer sheets (I have scent allergies which trigger migraines and asthma for me). I noticed the dryer wasn't drying, mentioned it to the manager, she was nonchalant about it. I called the fire inspector from the local fire department. Manager wasn't happy with me. Inspector found the pipe from the dryer (flex hose from machine to the pipe in the basement) was full of lint. He and I cleaned it out, literally pounds of stinky (mildewy), damp lint came out. He called the manager outside where he'd piled up some of the lint, dropped a match on it and it exploded. Really. Boom. She was appalled. He told her to ditch the dryer sheets and to not use liquid fabric softener, and switch from the chemical-laden detergent to an unscented and less toxic detergent, and she listened to him. He said one of the best ways to keep the hose and pipes clean is to completely avoid any kind of fabric softener or dryer sheets. So instead of writing me up for insubordination, she thanked me and changed the laundry products, as well as providing written instructions for the other staff for proper use of the washer and dryer (most of them were careless). She also had the dryer vents inspected every 6 months (a free service of our local fire department). It was a win for safety, and a win for staff with allergies. Matter of fact, she even bought a couple of wooden drying racks. 🙂 All of this can be applied to anyone, not just group homes!
