    An all-wheel drive station wagon with extra ground clearance is nothing new, but Volkswagen puts a new spin on this tested formula with its 2017 Golf Alltrack. Equipped with VW’s 4Motion system and an Off-Road driving mode, the Alltrack looks tougher and more capable than a regular Golf, but it’s not intended for true off-roading and has less ground clearance than a Subaru Outback. Its 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque.
    Chris Wardlaw loved the Golf Alltrack’s driver’s seat because it’s exceptionally comfortable. Space in the 40/20/40-split backseat isn’t generous, but each section can be dropped individually, and with those seats dropped, the Alltrack can stow 66.5 cubic feet of cargo. Wardlaw was pleased to be able to get a standard transmission, but found the navigation system in the available Discover Media infotainment system unimpressive. Happily, the system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/j02B5

    I always enjoy your reviews because you seem to touch on all the things I think are important. Your reviews are concise, informative, not too short or too long and the production is great.

    You can actually get the SEL for around 25k currently. Which is a great price. $600 for an APR tune and you have yourself a car that does 0-60 in the mid to low 6's.

    Chris. Thanks for the review of the Golf Alltrac. Your review ability is AWESOME. I own a 2017 Alltrac and after owning several SUV’s I’m glad I decided to try this out. Driving is fun again. As of reliability, I’ve been fortunate not to have any issues on any VW I’ve ever owned. I feel like I just got a lot of car for a fair price considering I got a 8000 discount on the car. I guess the dealer wanted to bring in their new 2018’s which I have no doubt that they will do great.

      8K discount? There’s one 6sp manual left on my local dealers lot right now. 5K off. I’m hoping it’s still there in December and that I too will get 8K off! What month did you buy yours? Thanks.

    I got a 17 in January 19 from a dealer with 4800 miles..for $22,000... bought it for ski trips. The engine is superior to the Subaru crosstrek.. Anything over 12" you have to dig out.. but the drive on hard pack or mixed roads is just perfect.

    So who classifies the outback as a 'truck/cuv' and how did they do that...last I checked, it was a lifted car... I think the S wagen w/4motion is a better way to go...amazing how those options add up quickly

  • @howardkerr8174

    Back in 1974 when I bought an Audi, "leatherette" was considered to be a fancy name for vinyl, and cloth covered seats were the optional upgrade.
    I do commend VW for not going with leather...but only if the leatherette is still the name they use for vinyl and they are not charging leather prices for it.
    I don't know what the prices are for new Outbacks, but suspect the Outback with real leather is a few grand more than an SEL Alltrack.

    The 1.8 turbo has got 180 bhp in europe prior to the facelift in 2017, and a diesel with 150 and 184 bhp. The biggest diesel does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, don't think that is bad. The mid range acceleration is very powerful according to car reviews.

    I just test drove this car a few min ago and i was a bit disappointed with the quality of the interior.
    The clutch is on the soft side for me and the shifter was ok. Acceleration is ok but it drives pretty well. I do like the mechanicals of the car but i wish they built this with better materials plus the back seat is not as big as to what i need.
    I really was hoping this would be my next car but i have to pass this up.

    If you are going to compare the price of a VW Alltrack to other vehicles, why compare the most loaded and expensive Alltrack available when not many people buy that level? Also, you can get quite a bit more headroom by getting the S model which doesn't have the problematic panoramic sunroof.

      I'm in the process of selling my Sportswagen TDi back (on March 13th VW takes it) and I'm going to miss it. I've been test driving other vehicles for a replacement purchase and none of them seem to drive as nice. The Subaru's certainly don't and I have test driven this Alltrack and it doesn't feel as nice as my old TDi. But VW is giving me $22K for a 2012 car, so how can I pass that up? Besides, I'm putting out up to 80 times the carbon as what's allowed! (good documentary on Netflix right now about VW's transgressions.)

      I've owned three water cooled VWs, put over 225,000 miles on each of them with no major problems. My current 2006 Jetta, with the 2.0T and DSG just rolled over 270,000 miles. I would still trust it to take me anywhere. I wouldn't trade any of those miles for some "more reliable", but boring car.

    $ 36 K FOR THIS ? They are going crazy. I think you really have to be stupid to buy this car AND bypass such vehicles as Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Outback even with V-6, Dodge Durango and many truly decent family cars. This car is nothing, a 4 cyl. that will cost you even more to repair the turbo and in US at least there will be many,many busted engine belts ruining the engine. It is not spacious it is not fast it is not comfortable and I would not take this anywhere off the paved road. Like he said it doesn't even have tinted rear windows. It is really another stupid crazy expensive basic car from the company that can't make cars any longer /

    • @honda900000
      @honda900000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      VW doesn't understand the US market at all. Exactly like the US companys doesn't understand the Europe market. This car is nearly perfect for Europe but nothing for the US. Same with the US Cars in Europe. They're to big, to slow, not sporty enough., really cheap interior.
      In Europe this is the old Golf Alltrack. Their is a newer version. Or you choose the Passat Alltrack. European Passat is a complete different world to the rubbish US-Version.

    • @tntmyth
      @tntmyth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man...It's not that bad. You can get a base S model for $25,955 as per the VW.com website. That has good looking imitation leather, 4-Motion, alloy wheels, heated front seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic LED head lights. Pretty good for less than $26,000. You don't have to buy the top trim. I would rather have this base model than a stripped Subaru Outback. And the VW now comes with a 6 year 72,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Not bad. Now if you are talking a Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited or Touring trim vs the VW Alltrack SEL, well that's a different game. I would take the Subaru all day. It's a bigger vehicle in a different class. The higher trim levels with leather are nice. But in lower trim or if I wanted stick shift, I would take the Alltrack.

      Careful, k K, your misinformation is showing! I paid 27K for a brand new 2017 Golf Alltrack SE (MSRP $32,765.00) - you just have to time the purchase right. Consumer Reports recommends the 2017 Golf Alltrack and it's the highest rated wagon in CR's reporting for 2017. The Alltrack is even rated higher in predicted reliability than the Outback! Also, the Durango is in a completely different class of vehicle - k K showing your automotive illiteracy once again. The 1.8 TSI engine is reliable and has been around for many years. No timing belt - the timing is chain driven - more misinformation on your part. I have owned many Subarus over the years and they are pretty much all very underpowered - very reliable, but very underpowered. I test drove a 2017 Outback with the four cyl and CVT - it was terrible! The engine and transmission do not get along at all! The Alltrack outperforms both Outback 2.5 and the Outback 3.6 for 0-60 and top speed and the Alltrack's handling is excellent - the Outback felt soft and jolly! It is spacious. And, most of all, it is quite fast! I love my 2017 Alltrack! I'm a first time VW owner with no regrets. So, ketothegate, you might try getting your facts straight before you rip on an affordable, safe, fun, capable and very practical vehicle.
