How to reseal a leaking shower tray | Silicone shower tray

  • A leaking shower tray can often result in water leaking through the ceiling into the rooms below. In most cases this is relatively easy to fix, although the job can be time consuming. The shower tray in this bathroom has not been touched for years, the intention was to replace the whole bathroom, but once the water started to leak through into the kitchen, it was time to fix the problem. Originally gaffer tape was used as a temporary measure, but after applying that I was busy for a few months and did not get around to fixing it.

    This is a job that I put off doing for months (hence the mould under the gaffer tape). I was intending on replacing the whole bathroom, but then decided that was too much work, so decided to reseal the shower tray. In next week's video I apply a UPCV quadrant beading over the top. If you are going to reseal your shower tray, please put a camera tripod in the shower cubicle with you - then you know how difficult this job is 😂
    I hope everyone has a great Sunday 👍

    That’s either a badly fitted tray/ tiling or the tray has dropped. Done properly you won’t even need cornice , just a small bead of silicone. Great preparation and it looks much better already before the quadrant

    In my experience, Silicone is often used as a filler material and not its intended use as a sealer.
    The end result is uncured blobs of silicone which seal nothing. It's best to apply a thin bead of silicone between surfaces requiring sealing and draw it between the surfaces.
    Thx for the content mate👍

    Think we can all associate with the ‘been putting it off for months’ - one of my least favourite jobs stuck in a small shower enclosure scraping that stubborn stuff off and trying to keep it neat whilst cramped up and getting grumpier by the second. Yeah, jobs like this are not fun. When I worked on site I used to get a right crap job every shutdown on a glass washing machine. Once you've siliconed a few baths and showers you'll be seeking out the Bette upstand range of baths and shower trays. Also the silicone can go off quicker than you think, often it's worth doing half or a third of a run behind a bath then tooling it off then doing another stretch. I've had Dow silicone go off on me and start to tear and grab when tooling off a long bath run.

    FWIW I had trouble with silicone sticking to PVC in my shower (including 785) so I contacted Dow's technical support team. They told me that acetoxy based silicone (vinegar smelling ones) don't do well with PVC in general and recommended a neutral cure silicone instead. So I used Dow 785N on their recommendation and it worked really well, no more leaks and it's stuck really well. It's a little fussier to use than normal silicone but fine once you get the hang of it.

    Hi when I tiled by bathroom I used a plastic ¼ round that went under the tile and kept the water from going behind the bath, I have just put in a new shower and removed the bath as at seventy years old I was finding it difficult to get my leg up high enough to get into the bath and getting out was even more difficult. However, removing the ¼ round left a gap like your bath.

    Great video, Thank you. Regarding the ceiling wall on the lower level where it has leaked, do you have a related video which would be able to link to on how to fix the impacted ceiling? I have the same issue and have left the issue for about a year, not caused too much of a leak, but wondering how to remove the leak/mold stains as I'd need to plaster and repaint.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve not covered that in a video yet, as I’m waiting to replace both upstairs bathrooms here before I fix the ceiling. Normally I would cut away and damaged plasterboard and either replace it, by cutting back to the joists, or if the damage is not too bad I would just use a filler such as Gyproc Easi-fill. Then give it a light sanding, prime the whole area, then give the whole ceiling 2 top coats of a decent quality paint.

    Wow! That gaffa tape covering the failing,lol. Anyway great video considering the circumstances of a confined area. Hate doing jobs like that myself because of the small area. I've been meaning to ask someone who might know...... Like in a new bath install, is it worth weighting the shower tray down before applying new silicone so that once set and the weight is then taken out the tray may rise and not over stretch the silicone when in use ?. and next time you have to work in a confines are like that and you were saying about having to work with a camera, Maybe get a baseball cap with an on board camera mounting or a spring clamp with a flexible arm camera mount so it get the camera off the floor ?

      I normally use a seal like this on baths- th-cam.com/video/tRweaE32_ks/w-d-xo.html
      It guarantees that there will never be a leak, but you have to install it when fitting the bath (before tiling).
      I installed a bath in this video- th-cam.com/video/cKqmvUyAVqE/w-d-xo.html
      If there is any movement at all in the bath, I pack it up using blocks or wood. Then fill the bath with water before siliconing.
      I think a camera on my head would be really annoying, as it would catch every head movement. I tried a small Go Pro once, but the sound quality was terrible.

    How do I take off the roller doors?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the middle of the shower enclosure (where the two doors meet), there are two plastic stops at the top and bottom. If you stand in the shower with the doors open you will see them. You need to remove the stops from the top and bottom, you should see that the profile has a bit of the aluminium rounded away. You remove one door at once by pulling it past the stops that you removed, until the wheels land in the rounded off part, this then enables the wheel to pop out of the channel. It's a bit tricky as you have to do the top and bottom at the same time.

      How? The seal he took off is made like that so it's not the tilers fault.

    Horrendous job, i did similar to our tray last month although no leaks from ours the silicone had mould on it and looked unsightly.Getting the old stuff off is the biggest hassle 🤮

      Yeah, it can be a right pain to remove. I think a lot depends on the make of silicone used, some seem much more difficult to remove than others.
      Thanks for the comment 👍
