- Just some beautiful shooting to the sounds of the court and the crowd... The record for points in an Olympics game set by the legendary Oscar Schmidt. The transition threes he takes and makes in this game, perhaps, represent the least fucks given I've ever seen. The man's worst case scenario in the NBA probably would have been Kiki Vandeweghe. He can definitely score with the best of them.
Disclaimer - I swear he only made 53 points. Now, I don't want to challenge the legitimacy of another historical statline (like Shaq's a week ago), but I specifically re-watched the game by fast-forwarding it. The broadcast helps by showing each team's flag and total points after each basket and thus I kept notice of every point by Brazil. And I''m telling you - Schmidt scored 53.

+Johnny 34, in 1992, Brazil team played a game against the real Dream Team, with 11 first ballot Hall of Famers (I have excluded here the college guy, Christian Laettner, for obvious reasons). Oscar was 34 as you have mentioned, and probably not on his prime at this age. He was guarded by Scott Pippen, simply 8 times NBA All-Defensive First Team (1992-1999). If you watch the game you will notice that Pippen was not able to really guard him. Oscar scored 24 points over the best defensive NBA player of that season. More, the only NBA player able to score more on that game was Charles Barkley, with 30 points. Also, the match was even until end of first half. US team was only able to impose their game over Brazil on second half, and I would say that it was because of the better athletic condition of its players.Cris Mullin scored 19, Jordan 15, Pippen 14, Ewing 13, Malone 12, David Robinson 11, Drexler 8 and Bird only 5 points on that game. So, how do you explain this? Is Oscar really an international player in a level below the best NBA stars?? Really I don't agree. The proof of my statement??? On next olympic games, in Atlanta, 1996, Brazil played again against USA on quarter finals. Oscar was the MVP of that game and simply scored 26 while, Penny Hardaway scored 14, Pippen 13, Reggie Miller 12, O'Neal 11, Barkley and Malone 9, Olajuwon, Garry Payton and Mitch Richmond 7, David Robinson 5 and Grant Hill 4. Oscar was 38 years old and scored more than double of points than any of the USA team players. Another information to you: Drazen Petrovich which has played on Nets and on Portland Trail Blazers, was one of the great competitors of Oscar while playing in Europe. They have some similarities on their game. Drazen is recognized, by some of the best NBA players ever, as a great player and one of the best shooters ever to play on NBA, even better than Reggie Miller. So, do you really think that Oscar should be an average player on NBA?? I don't think so...
Oh! I forgot to mention that in 1988 Seoul Games, when he was at his prime, he scored 31 Pts + 7 Rebounds over US team. One more time MVP of the game against USA team with Danny Manning 12 Pts and David Robinson 11 Pts. The top scorer at USA was J. R. Reid with only 16 points.

To be fair, the entire Brazil offense was geared towards him, he was their first, second and 3rd option, if possible. If your team is looking for you every possesion, it is not hard to score 24 points. The Dream Teams used a balance attack, where everybody would have their opportunities. So the fact that he outscored most of the Americans in those games doesn't really prove anything.
However, I am sure he would have been an All Star in the NBA, and possibly average 25ppg for multiple seasons. If you look at some NBA players like Alex English who made the all star teams multiple times during that era and scored almost 30ppg, he had an advantage over them. Most of them were smaller and did not have a 3 point shot. I don't think it would have been a problem for him to shoot the longer NBA 3, and that would make him a nightmare for any forward trying to guard him, as back then forwards were not used to guarding 3 point shooters.
So his offensive skills would have made up for his lack of defense in the 80s, and in the 90s, when defense really stepped up and he was aging, he would probably would have played a lesser, 6th man role, a guy who's job was to come off the bench and light it up.
So he could have easily had a 15 year career in the NBA. Compare him to Detlef Schrempf. Oscar was a much better offensive player in terms of ability to score, and Detlef had a solid 15 year old career in the league.
It would have been fun to see him against Larry Bird in the 3 point contest.

I watched Oscar playing in Brazil when he was 40 years old, and in that game he scored 40 points. He was unbelievable and unstoppable. Unfortunately for us, Brazilians, he played most of his career in Europe, so we didn't have many chances to watch him play. When he was close to retire, he came back to Brazil, and at the age of 40 he completely dominated our national league. He was indeed of of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Oh, thanks for uploading a piece of the basketball history of my country. I doubt Oscar would be one of the greatest players in the NBA had he came in the 80's, but he surely would be among the top scorers, he had one otherworldly skill(shooting), and put 100% of his focus on it. It was fun to see him playing in his 40's here in Brazil, he couldn't(nor wanted to) do anything related to defense and his passing and rebounding were always subpar, but the guy at 44 could still make those shots with 3 hands on his face look easy. Not even the best brazilian basketball player of all time, but certainly the most unique, and definitely one of the greatest shooters that ever walked on earth.

Jeremin .C It's either Wlamir Marques or Amaury Pasos, both Olympic Medalists and World Cup MVPs. Oscar was a great scorer, and the best brazilian I've seen play, but by all accounts and accolades, those two were the best players Brazil ever had.

Jeremin .C Those were the late 50's and early 60's. Even though the USA were always the best at basketball, the NBA itself was a baby and struggling to even make money, recruiting foreign players was something they even hadn't dreamed of. Wlamir and Amauri played professionally here in Brazil(even though they were amateurs by FIBA rules, fuck logic) and didn't make much money, basketball was more of a passion than a reasonable way to live.

I've been thinking about this ballplayer since 1988. There is a lot to learn from the way he played. I was 18 then and should have taken notes. I really didn't understand the game until I coached it.

Looking at the footage, there's no doubt that Oscar Schmidt would have been an extremely effective NBA player. The original poster mentioned Kiki Vandeweghe as his wrost case scenario, and Vandeweghe was a two time NBA all star and had years in which he averaged 29 and 26 points per game and that over his NBA career had a 19.7 ppg average. Last I checked, a 20 ppg scorer in the NBA is pretty darn good, and its a shame that we didn't get to see him in the NBA.

I found this guy because I was looking back at recent Team USA performances and Kevin Durant kept showing up as the scoring leader for multiple Olympics, so I thought to myself, "surely he's got to be the all-time Olympics scoring leader." Not even close, Oscar Schmidt's point total is more than double of Kevin Durant, who is the US leader by a fair margin. Schmidt played in five Olympics and Durant will get his fourth appearance in 2024-I don't imagine anyone is touching that record anytime soon, perhaps ever.

You can really see how Larry bird was his idol, bro has great passing chops and a very good post game too. Obviously the first thing you notice with him is his shooting which is incredible but he really has a good all around offensive game, definitely made his teammates better. Shame he never played in the league fr probably one of the most underrated players as a result

One of my aunts scored 35ppg as a pg with no 3 point line . She had offers to all the top programs in the country, but turned them down to join the convent to become a nun. Her sister was 2-3 year younger and also really good. Went Rutgers and blew out her knee in one of her first practices, never played again. Both of them would of been even better with a 3 pt line.
