    Great review...this video convinced me to get a 75" X95K vs. an A80K OLED since it's in my living room with windows and skylights and brightness is still king for that. Best TV I've owned yet! The only tradeoff is the bit of blooming, but in actual viewing it's actually very minimal unless you're watching something like a space movie with stars or torture test demos. Anything colorful renders blooming a non-issue.

  • @loki76
    @loki76 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Apparently the 85" version of the X95K is FAR better than the other lower resolution models. Something to do with using AUO panels instead and also the 732 zones somehow creating more "zones" for each same size object on screen. Or something like that I don't know Vincent would know.
    It's a bit less blooming on 85" and better black level.

      Many on the forum pages have confirmed this. The 85" version has a much better panel than the 65 & 75 inchers.
      It's not cool that you have to get an 85 inch to get better blooming control, but at least it's an option if you can accommodate it financially and spatially.

    Huge thanks for the review and especially for mentioning the PWM frequency. This is very important info for us that are sensitive to it but still care for image accuracy. I assume the correct Local dimming setting for accurate EOTF tracking is still "Medium"? Currently have the 75" TCL C935 but seriously considering returning it for the X95K (or A80K). I see exactly the same black crush issues as on the C835. The darker tones just don't have the rich tonality my old XG95 had. Blooming is of course vastly better on the C935 vs. XG95. There also seems to be quite a bit of brightness fluctuations between scene cuts of different APL on the C935 when Local dimming set to "High". It's much better with "Low" but then you get floating blacks.

    • @BaSiC47
      @BaSiC47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely agree. My new Samsung Neo QLED TV caused headaches for a long time until I found out that activating motion clear or every picture setting except „Movie“ will drop the PWM frequency from 960 to 120.

    • @BaSiC47
      @BaSiC47 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@markusrayan I can fully understand that. The problem is that only a minority of people is sensitive to PWM flickering. Most people are not affected or don’t even know what PWM is. Sadly I’m not one of them. I can instantly sense low frequency PWM just like wild animals can sense earthquakes.

    • @markusrayan
      @markusrayan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BaSiC47 Pretty much the same. I would have gone OLED a long time ago but it also has issues with stutter and motion flicker. PWM is usually tested with a static white test pattern. This is where OLED is essentially flicker free and no PWM. Things change dramatically when there are objects moving on screen especially if the objects are dark or mid tone (dithering). For me causes similar symptoms as LED-tv's with low PWM frequency (eye fatigue, headaches, migraines, nausea, vertigo).
      Being a 'videophile' and dealing with such issues is not easy and I do hope manufacturers take these matters more seriously in the future and not just hide under the "..for most people.." blanket. Some of your customers are not "most people".

    We decided on the 75" Sony X95K because of its picture accuracy and shadow details. After owning it for 3 weeks, we couldn't be happier with our decision. Compared this to my other 65" Sony OLED A8H, the X95K is a major step up in picture quality in my brightly lid living room. Blade Runner 2049 looks incredible! Interesting to note, my X95K panel doesn't exhibit the same level of blooming for the subtitle (14s); you illustrated. In fact, we find it to be just right in our room. If there is any trace of blooming at all, we would trade that with shadow details and color accuracy any day.

    I'm sorry... But I would always take more blooming while retaining accurate picture then to have less blooming but crushed blacks and less then accurately bright image... Blooming can be adjusted to but hardcoded black crushing algorithm cannot.
    Blooming can be very well subsidized by implementing D65 above 95% CRI running at very dim state (with high flicker rate dimmer that is over 7000hz, as dimmers flicker that is at about 1000hz or lower can cause INSANE headaches due to eye straining from strobing effect like it did to me before buying more expensive one with higher flicker rate) ), which also at the same time greatly helps your eyes from straining due to sudden high brightness flashes (like gun flares in the pitch black scenes or sudden fade in into maximum brightness white from pitch black).
    But with purposely built algorithm that lowers blooming also kills accuracy of the scene as obviously observed and that is to me a no go.
    So i'd still take Sony mini LED.

If the TV takes several seconds to get there, that means that most moving images will never get to the 2000 nits value, am I mistaken? Can the TV reach 2000nits? Yes. Will that look the same compared to a TV which can reach 2000 nits instantly? No. It's good to know the max brightness but I feel there should be a measurement for that too - such as "max brightness after 1ms". Opinions?

    Hdtvtest, you should try to find a Sharp Elite LCD from around 2013 and compare it against modern flagship LCD. It had over 700 dimming zones and I suspect it would perform better than many modern flagship sets. Many AV enthusiasts consider it to still be the best LCD set as far as accuracy and black level performance is concerned. Would be a fun video just like the plasma vs OLED video you made. I have this TV. First I will say I am very happy with it, it's miles better than Samsung's 8K Neo QLED (which I had as well). However, there does seem to be something amiss with Dolby Vision. DV 4K Blu-rays look incredible, but Dolby Vision streaming from Netflix and Prime (not sure about other streaming services those are the only two I have currently) is washed out pretty bad. I was mainly able to correct this issue by setting black level to 49 and black adjust to medium, but it really shouldn't be that way and hopefully Sony will fix this in an update.

      I have done this to compensate in the meantime, you might want to try it: Contrast not max but 95, advanced contrast enhancer medium, peak luminance medium, and smoothness/clearness both 1 and cinemotion low. I know clearness is black frame insertion, but there is no noticeable flicker at all and it seems to help the washed out thing that is going on.

      However, even after 3 years, I never quite got used to the stuttery motion. Watching 24p content would strain my eyes, and motion smoothing always looks bad to me, as well.
      Since then I got an X95J on clearance, and for movies at 24fps, the motion is WAAAAAAY better. I also tried the QN90A, and motion was pretty much similar to the X95J. Much easier on the eyes than OLED.
      However, when I play fast paced games like CoD, even at 120fps, I can see so much blur. On OLED, even at 60fps, fast paced games look way cleaner and more responsive compared to even 120fps on the QN90A/X95J.
      Which is why I have an LG C2 on my desk now for multiplayer gaming on my Xbox, and the X95J for PS5 games at 30-60fps, and of course, movies.

    But what i'm wondering is: isn't blooming itself a flaw that affects image accuracy?
    For me, blooming is much more distracting than less accurate colors or lower brightness or
    reduction of shadowy details.
    The point is that if I have to choose between these aspects, not having a reference monitor next to the TV, I prefer the one that least of all destroys my image and least of all makes me lower the general appreciation of a film.

    • @hdtvtest
      @hdtvtest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @Michele Martignetti: Blooming only affects certain scenes with bright objects on black background.
      Greyscale, gamma and colour inaccuracies affect EVERY SINGLE SCENE you watch, which means that the creative intent is subverted more frequently than what the occasional blooming can do.
      For us, as purists, we vastly prefer image accuracy which - in our books - "destroys" least of the picture in the majority of movies.

    • @Lucisael
      @Lucisael 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @justsaying993
      @justsaying993 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In my experience, I’ve tried both the QN90A vs the X95J earlier this year.
      Initially, I got the QN90A, hoping to keep it because it has less blooming. However, it felt like a really imbalanced picture to me. Near black detail would be crushed, and bright highlights on dark backgrounds would be dimmed excessively to make sure there wasn’t blooming.
      Bright whites could be excessively bright.
      I returned it for the X95J, and even though I do notice the blooming (owned an OLED for 3 years), I also find in not losing detail, and highlights on dark backgrounds are only dimmed a little. On top of that, the XR processor has a way of making people and objects look more natural, and the upscaling on 1080p content was much better imo.
      So moral of the story is, you have to try things out for yourself to really know what you will like and won’t, because originally I thought I would prefer the less blooming on the QN90A because it was closer to the OLED I was used to. I was wrong.

      @TheCrucialQ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is nothing more disappointing to me than discovering that there is something in a scene, I couldn't see because detail was crushed or clipped. Minimal blooming is fine to me, I'd rather have the image accuracy over crushed shadow detail.
      A accurate image tends to sharper, which makes having the sharpness setting set to zero, much more beneficial to your experience.

  • @_burd

    Despite the accuracy within the standard range of luma/chroma, that blooming and ghosting (@5:10 especially) makes the X95K really problematic even. Though one thing I've noticed is that subtitles are often placed at 100% white. In SDR this is totally fine as that's only 100nits. But in HDR that can be upwards of a thousand nits, creating a huge contrast delta for the display to handle in a very small space :/ I wonder is there a way to develop a different standard for subtitle rendering when using HDR 🤔
