From Bastard File To Puukko (With Help From Lasers)

- Making a Puukko knife with stacked cork and cardstock handle recycling the good steel of an old and worn file. Heat treatment is skipped by keeping the blade cool during all grinding stages. The goal of this project is to see how I can incorporate a laser cutter into my knifemaking workflow, in this case by tracing patterns and cutting the cork and cardstock for the handle stack. The laser I have is the FLUX Beambox, with 40W laser. Read more here:

Love that style of knife .
I had a professor in college that mentioned the he would take files and turn them into knives like this project and use the for deer hunting. The steel that files are made out of and how they are heat treated make them really good for this purpose. They will hold an edge for a really long time. The one downside he mentioned was that the steel was very prone to rusting, so you had to make sure to not leave it unattended to for long periods of time, much like people who cook with cast iron cookware.
I like the laser cutter.
Generally files are a bit too hard and has no resilience, so if you wanna make a knife out of a file you should start from zero, annealing, quenching and hardening, or you can just harden it in the oven to make it a little softer

File have to be grinded first! Files are made of toolsteel. Thats why they stay sharp very long time! 1,2% carbon + vanadium + nickel.

Great idea to use the laser cutter to cut the washers for the stacked handle! Nice end result, I’d probably have tempered the blade before fitting the scalesto bring the hardness down just a bit from the original file. 👍🏻
Additionally reinforcement to the end of the handle would be great and much safer to use

He didn't temper it; that is critical
There is a pretty good chance that knife blade will break the first time it gets dropped on a hard surface or has any side pressure applied to it unless you didn't show us how you tempered the blade. Files are pretty good steel but it has to be tempered or they are brittle.
The file must have been annealed then quenched, the belt sander just wouldn’t have worked otherwise. I assume it was heat treated/tempered afterwards to regain hardness. But I agree, it would be good to have seen that.
@@neill6189 You can grind a non-annealed steel with the belt sander - it just takes longer.

Simple, easy, but the handle could use more refinement in my opinion. It could benefit from some good finger swells and a threaded pommel to hold more securely than just epoxy, at least if your choping with it.
The tang seems way too narrow, expecially that 90° angle at the transition between tang and blade

Only question is how good is the grip on the handle? It looks super cool, but seems like it would be very smooth/slick
You can see that his thumb bumps over the rough surface at around 7:54. Rougher than it may seem from the prep work.
It looks terrible for durability. I’d prefer a stacked leather.
@@RadDadisRad I made two with cork tiles, held together with beeswax and turps - still going strong after four years.

Looks nice.
To make it stronger, spine should have more width and rounded transition to blade. And peen the spine end, that holds the handle in place. Traditionally no glue (or any epoxy or blastic) is used in puukko, nor is it needed when done properly. Handle is made from curlybirch or stacked birchbark.
