Interesting. I'm in orchestra, so I've never heard of the bass clarinets. Respect to bass clarinets! :)

In high school there were 2 bass clarinets next to us saxes. They could blow!

Bass clarinets aren’t really rare, they’re actually used almost always in ensambles and orchestras
the rare ones you are thinking of are probably contrabass or contralto clarinets which are like the tuba of the woodwinds
