I learned Italian at 14y/o, translating Edgar Allan Poe! In my country, his works were banned so I found a Milanese publication from 1938 and I started learning Italian so I could read Poe! At 22 I went to Canada and there I could buy it freely, so I bought a used copy and I was reading it outloud in English (of course) in a Metro line, I think it was King and Spadina! Everyone thought I was crazy and were giving me space! Little did they know...

If he'd damaged his liver severely enough, he could have started having hallucinations and died without going through DT's. Your liver eliminates ammonia that builds up in your body. If your liver gets too damaged to function, it can't do this anymore and ammonia in the brain leads to INSANE hallucinations. I unfortunately know this from personal experience. Nearly died due to liver failure after a decade of alcoholism. Got jaundice, spent a month in the hospital, induced coma for a week because my DT's were so bad. Even after they woke me up I had open eye horrifying hallucinations for days and days. Also amnesia that cleared up as my liver returned to something approaching normal functioning.

Fun little fact, I live in Baltimore and the Westminster Hall and Burying Grounds where his grave is is now a popular spot for event hosting. So much so in fact, that I can say with 100% honesty that my Senior Prom was held in the middle of the graveyard where Poe is buried. The atmosphere is quite eerie but beautiful at night.

    • @arttrashuberalles7223

@@ahsokaventriss3268 I'm a native so I don't really know how it stacks up to other places, I give it a hard time but it's honestly a lot like other east coast places it's size. The neighborhoods change in vibe pretty dramatically from one to another, I grew up in a really blighted region with more abandoned rowhomes than occupied ones, but that's part of a large spectrum of different places. Between the museums, nightlife, music scene, and distance to DC it's certainly not boring. Rents aren't terrible but they're not dirt cheap either. The food and culture is fantastic. I don't think I'd wanna live anywhere else, even if i give it a hard time.

@@arttrashuberalles7223My father grew up part of his childhood in south-central Pennsylvania and has spent much of his time in DC, so he’s been to Baltimore many times throughout his life. He took me there on a few occasions, and he really likes the city, thinking of it as an underrated gem that’s been through too much.
That being said, his being from PA gives him a less positive attitude concerning Philadelphia (which I think is a shame; I’ve never been to Philly but from what I hear it’s quite like how he describes Baltimore).

i find it so sad that people in the 19th century (and other times too) didn't have any help with things like psychosis, delusions or other mental problems, i can only imagine how many people would have lived so much longer and better if only they would have been given the right treatment and support :(

It still happens these days. Unfortunately access to the needed drugs and treatments aren’t easy to get and for a lot of people around the world they’re definitely not free. There’s a guy close to where I live that stands on the street corner from morning to night claiming she’s waiting for his Mother. Now I can’t say for sure that this Mother doesn’t exist, but he stand there by himself for over 12+ hours nearly every day and I’ve never seen a woman appear. There are no programs in my country to help folks like him. I can only hope he has somewhere to sleep at night

Things were always bad, just now that we have globalization and information that we can have a glimpse into other countries' affairs. Modern humans are still struggling to handle vast information and accept that things are Out of our control.
Its good that we have the a system for mental health and the wisdom to understand the human spirit and psyche. Its better than just lobotomizing people :(

When my grandfather was passing away with severe Liver Sepsis from Diabetes with an infected bladder he had lots of delusions, hallucinations & times where he believed he was a kid again on the farm he was raised on.
One thing that struck me was that he would get agitated and start repeating the name 'Gary' over and over again, which was the name of one of his brothers that had passed away years ago.
Perhaps Edgar A. Poe was not 'drunk' that night but suffering from Liver Sepsis brought on from heavy drinking in the past or an internal infection? It could've exacerbated by a 'Cooping' incident I suppose.
Reynolds could've come from anything his delusioned mind was focused on at the moment, could've been a childhood friend, bully or person he believed conspired against him if he was paranoid.

Woah, huge fact check. Hallucinations from delirium tremens can start WAY earlier than 2-4 days after a severe alcoholic's last drink. By 2 days they're already going to be far into the worst of it, and by day 4 a detoxing chronic alcoholic is likely either done withdrawing or the worst is over and they're starting to get better. And if you're sleep deprived hallucinations can start before you even start withdrawing, sleep depravation is super common. When you start getting really sick from drinking so much you are often sleep deprived, when I was at my worst I could only sleep for 2 or 3 hours at a time before I'd wake up dry heaving, but I was always tired. I was really sleep deprived by the end and it was effecting my basic cognitive functioning. This has been an entertaining video, I just had to throw that in. I know way more about alcohol withdrawal than I'd like to, but thankfully I'm sober now.

I did some research into the Maryland elections of 1849. I went through all the runners of Senate and the House of Delegates and didn't find a whole lot. But in my research, I came across a man named: *Henry R. Reynolds.* He was a carpenter who served as an election judge on election day in Baltimore.
My theory: I believe that Poe was in an all around bad physical and mental state at this time and may have had an underlying and untreated illness. I believe that he was an easy target and the victim of cooping. I believe that he was drugged by thugs and forced to vote and he kept yelling the name of the election judge in the hospital, maybe thinking he was still at the voting polls. As for what exactly killed him, I don't know. But I do believe that's what happened to him in his final days. But it's just my theory.

A “Henry Reynolds” related to the election in Baltimore was mentioned in the video, I think also referenced as an election judge. Haven’t yet heard he was a candidate, though if he was that makes it seem more plausible.

Love the videos, man! A truly, truly sad story, no matter how many times I hear or read it.
Just two things I want to contribute!
First: here on Brazil I'm reading a book talkinng about Poe's biography translated from Shelley Bloomfield. The book is amazing. She details so much in so few words, that is actually amazing how she manages to do that. Combining that with other books I already read about his biography, I can certainly say that Poe's biological father, David Poe, was also an alcoholic. So he was and also his brother (he had one older brother and a younger sister).
Alcoholism is a very hereditary trait. And a very deadly and bad one to have. He suffered with it all his life. I'm not saying that the theory about the alcoholism talked about in the end is true, just pointing this little trivia.
Second: these two common "photos" you show in your videos are a very archaic way to take a photo that was common in the mid to late XX century. It's called daguerreotype and in Bloomfield's book shee says that Poe hated these two pics. He said that no matter how he appeared, he didn't like the way it was portrayed. And in this one that you also mentioned that people once theorized that he was poisoned by the look of his eyes, Bloomfield says that this pic, that is immortalized in cover of notebooks, books and so on, was taken a few days after he attempted suicide with laudanum (a type of medicinal opium). This pic I'm talking about appears exactly in 25:20. That's why he appears so... down, sad, in suffering. And sadly, it was immortalized as the appearance of a poet.
This daguerreotype is titled "Ultima Thule" by Helen Whitman, one woman that Poe gave one of his poems to, and was taken in 1848 by W. S. Hartshorn, Providence, Rhode Island. The book I took all this info is from 2007, titled "The Everything Guide to Edgar Allan Poe" by Adams Media and F + W Publications Company (I'm reading the brazilian translation).
I love this man so deeply... Thank you for creating this masterpiece to cover this mysterious death. It's impossible to not shed a tear after knowing the sad, sad way he died. Alone, lost, sick and don't even seeking for help.

From around 8:45 - Alcohol hallucinosis is also a possibility which causes hallucinations much more acutely after alcohol intoxication as opposed to the 72 hr-ish timeline for alcohol withdrawal and DTs.

Halluncinosis is a symptom of dts but can occur in heavy drinkers when amount of alcohol intake is lowered due to how body metabolizes alcohol, you should look up the study done adjacent to mk ultra on dt and hallucinosis it is fascinating and provides alot of nuance to the way it works

I remember listening to the Pit and the Pendulum alone on Halloween when I was was a boy. At that point life had already claimed what I was more times then seen as possible. I can still hear that pendulum rending time itself that night, swaying to and fro eerily soothing in a contorting calm that caused cracks to form. Only to grow cataclysmic pulses throughout my mind, I won't say anything else about what happened that night. It is beyond any metric the horrible things your perceived "loved ones" will inflict on you with a mad joy painted on thier face. Peace

18:00 this is also an apt description for exploring and/or healing our psyches, ime.
whether in therapy or during meditation (vipassana - contemplation of things with a still, focused and 'centered'/detached mind), the vast majority of us stop/turn away just as a liberating (yet painful to accept) insight, connection, realization is about the be accomplished.
the ego (let's call it negative conditioning mostly during our formative yrs) lies to us, that if we cross that threshold, it will kill it destroy us somehow. when in fact, it is the ego (rather a conditioned view or habit we have via the ego, a part of the ego) that is about to extinguish...not "US" (our life or sanity).
come to think of it, from the "trip reports" and my own timid dabbling, people reporting a presence or voice or just the overwhelming, emphatic, panic inducing feeling of "you took too much you idiot...AND with no sitter...you're going to die*." during the 'coming up' phase of psychedelic experiences with salvia*, mushrooms, and even eating thc ("greening out").
    * my personal experience

    • @JimmyMatis-h9y
      @JimmyMatis-h9y หลายเดือนก่อน

I know that feeling of imminent destruction is a lie but we do like our distractions.
I suppose this means I'm not yet sufficiently convinced the confrontation really _won't_ kill me, so here I am 'spreading the Gospel' for others to benefit from...feeling good about myself while avoiding confronting the demons* that are taunting me with that piece of exciting but out of reach ("never to be imparted" because, in fact, we're too afraid of it) knowledge, healing, Freedom, (personal) Power.
      * daemons, to the ancient Greeks - spirits that bring us knowledge... some of which is uncomfortable so we, as a culture, came to 'demonize' them as evil; another maneuver Ego.
✌️ ❤️‍🩹 I'm off to be imparted, ty for being an excellent sounding board 🙏

I do agree TB is the *most likely* cause of Poe’s death, however I do not think rabies can be ruled out entirely based on the two exclusions mentioned.
    1) “No bite wounds”- Not all animals which carry rabies may even leave many noticeable bite wounds. Bats, for example, cause most rabies related deaths these days and their teeth are tiny. Bites would go unnoticed by almost everyone. It’s common for people to wake up with a bat on them and never know they were bitten. In fact; this has happened with virtually every rabies case in the US in the past 10-15 years. Also, rabies has an average incubation period from 1-3 months. Meaning you could receive a bite, and the bite completely heal over before the incubation period to begin. Meaning bite wounds would likely never be noticed.
    2) “hydrophobia” while it’s true that in many cases, rabies victims suffer a fear of water and may go so far as to avoid drinking entirely, that doesn’t mean every case exhibits this. (Approximately 80% exhibit this according to Google) while it’s still very common for victims to experience hydrophobia, it’s definitely not enough to completely rule it out based on Poe not experiencing it.
