Pickaxe: Coffee AND rock buster bonus, uses no gas, generates less heat Auger: Only rock buster, but the speed lets it take advantage of the duration of the buff more than the pickaxe. Generates heat per click, especially generates a lot when mining metal, and uses gas. A simple-minded breakdown of the traits for these tools without taking into account speed. I think GNS mentioned it before: because of the heat generation, use pick for metals and auger for stone and non-metals. But if you have the mods and perks for the steel pickaxe to one-shot then by all means, because coffee AND rock busters give a bonus harvest on top of being faster than the auger.
You can also just break the dew collector and get the whole thing back, not even needing a land claim block to do it. 👍 At least in the first iteration of the a21 experimental.
The first thing I noticed too with art of mining in alpha 21 is the 1 shot was gone as well so I figures steel pickaxe would be better because of coffee rock blaster and no gas which is a pain in the early game but I'm glad to see you test it.
The augar is good for soft materials, but bad for screamers (remember to crouch when mining). I've worked my way up to level 6 steel pickaxe with mods attached miner/motherload completed and rockbusters candy about 143 ore per hit. I prefer open mining, but run multiple ladders along each wall from top to current mining level. Also, carve a small alcove from primary area so when you hear screamer you can run in to it and crouch to take her out.
Listening ro these at work today. On ten now , hopefully 3 or 4 more before I'm home. After work, looking foward to restarting a world with a ton more knowledge now
I noticed the same traders having the same items over and over and over after trade cycles. I then found another Joel in my world and he had THE SAME EXACT ITEMS as my main Joel. Traders/quests are BUGGED.
With miner 69 at 5 and level 6 steel pick you can 1 shot oil, coal and nitrate but metals still takes 2hit, you don't need rock buster bonus for that but need luck to get level 6 pick with good stats because bad one leave like 4 hp on ore.
I've always found the auger to summon more enemies than the pickaxe, i think it's something to do with the insane speed it hits at just making a ton of heat, personally i never use it, plus it just sips at your fuel reserves, meaning you spend more time digging oil shale which kinda makes it not worth in the long run either
Steel pickaxe is more efficient given that it doesn't require gas. It does use up stam/food/water but once you get to the point to where you got an auger that probably doesn't matter. Pretty much been that way since i've been playing in A16 i think. Given the same tier/perks and mods i'll default to the pick. Now where the the auger shines is when you are in a area where bounce around to different resources like dirt, stone, coal, etc in one session. pick isn't great against dirt and takes an extra hit in some cases.
@@IzPrebuilt note that the auget dont generate additional heat when you hold the mouse button down. Evert time you click and release and then click agein it generates heat
Great video and a useful comparison. The pickaxe speed could have been better in the stone mining if you had drank a few coffees to prevent energy drain, something which obviously doesn’t affect the auger.
you do know that the chance of spawning a screamer occurs each time you activate the chainsaw or auger, try just holding it down you wont get nearly as many, but youll use alot more fuel

Generally I'm a proponent of the pickaxe for mining because it's safer and quieter, and because I'm almost always specced into Miner/Mother Lode because it's useful and my friends don't long for the mines. But it's definitely made clear to me that if you're not specced into Miner/Mother Lode that the power tools are the way to go, particularly with stamina costs being what they are in A21. If I ever end up not specced into Miner/Mother Lode I'll know what to use for sure.
Just mined oil shale last night with a lev 4 steel pick while having lev 5 miner 69er and mother load. One shoting oil shale and the amounts of shale was just... insane!
when they removed that buff to one shot ore the auger is useless now calls screamers to fast when you can harvest with the pickaxe forever with no issues with screamers
I haven't really played alpha 21 but in Alpha 20. I would switch between the pick and the auger. using the pick when I have stamina and I use the auger when I ran out of stamina.
Also good to note that you're missing the final Miner 69er rank which does effect your stamina consumption. It's very possible that the Steel Pick Axe with just that maxed alone could scale a few thousand more resources than the Auger.
I'd also add onto your point that the coffee itself, would buff picks not just through the increased ore rates but also the stamina Regen would allow more continuous mining.
i think part of why the shovel was worse than the auger is that the auger is faster, plus the fact the shovel gets you 39 clay per block, while the auger gets 44 clay per block. the difference adds up with time
Try digging a mine shaft and fill the top 5 blocks above you with soil. You should be able to mine to your hearts desire without worry. Well until you come back to the surface. But if you are playing on a server with teleports. Just teleport home.
to be honest i like that, auger and chainsaw are now just better for everyone else except strenght focused builds who are god like with just an axe , a shovel and a pickaxe.
My thought on the Auger was always mixed. I never liked it's noise. I loved it's ability to be 2 items in 1 slot (shovel and Pickaxe). I loved it was another way to use gas. I am an iron pickaxe guy now. No stamina expiring. Breaks blocks fast. Easy to get early game.

Pickaxe wins if you maxed out the strength tree and have coffee and an ergonomic grip mod you will be having a good time. Also get a turret set up going on outside your mine to deal with screamers
Augur was even worse spawning screamers last alpha, literally one a minute if you weren't underground, made the chainsaw pointless, it pretty much is anyway considering how fast axes take down trees. I think automatic tools need to collect extra materials and generate less heat to make them worth it, or perhaps cap screamer encounters to one every in game hour or something.
Move to different biome to get harder hordes, i got demos on day 14 in the wasteland :/ But yeah, you can easily make the hordes on foot and some explosives. In the mining.... got a lv6 pick and lv 5 auger, and really, auger maybe can be used on iron, not on the other mining resources. Definitely for clay. By the way, you can use the coffee for extra resources and stamina on the pickaxe. Keep up the good work!
what I do is, I use a tier 6 steel pickaxe with blackstrap coffee, which keep you mining non-stop, no need to stop to regain stamina. blackstrap coffee is not that expensive either. its way better than auger with same condition
@violetteplague3043 If you crouch, it makes the auger quiet . I used to not like the sound either, but ever since they added the crouch feature, nothing compares for me. There is no need to swith to the shovel and never out of stamina for the inevitable screamers. Which I don't mind because mining is a bore. By the way, you should use a level 6 auger. It absolutely makes a difference in gathering. So do all the mods that can go on either.
I don't get any screamers when using an auger, because I crouch when I mine. Obviously I uncrouch if I need to move around, but I don't think the lower movement speed affects me much. If Blood Moons seem easy I recommend going to a harder biome for it. Zombies properly scale with gamestage now, so you'll get demos on level 30 in the wasteland which wouldn't have happened in A20.
They've cranked to valheim levels. Wasteland I had a vulture almost every 5 seconds. Even had 'em follow me back to my green forest biome and mess up my roof.
One thing I will say that may have changed the overall efficiency of the steel pick vs auger; the "ergonomic grip" is to the steel pick, as the "large motor tool tank" is to the auger. Testing with one without the other is a little rough. Do I believe that it would have made that massive of a difference? No, but it still would have been a closer comparison. I think that for at least the stone test, it would be the difference of 3k. I do wish they would have more modifications for specifically the auger / chainsaw, since I believe they are meant to be more efficient, but you cause screamers to spawn more often / use another resource (gas). Maybe a "diamond tipped" mod or something would be good, not just "hehe more gas"
I never mined with an auger ever since it was added (mainly becuase I never knew it could one shot and I didnt really need it most of the time since I was solo), and now without the one shot I will STILL use the pick.
I tend to prefer auger over mineaxe because of one simple reason: stamina. With pickaxe i swing several times and need 20-30 second rest. With auger I only need fuel and can work non-stop and much faster. From other side Pickaxe have much bigger range, so when i am digging a hole and not for resources and dig around the place i can use pickaxe better to destroy top and bottos side of the area so everything will fall down.
Lame that they changed that the Art of Mining set bonus. While it's still good, the old one just made auger mining awesome as you just ripped right through blocks with it.
With maxed miner69er and coffee, you really don't use any stamina. i generally spawn a screamer before depleting my stamina so my stamina recharges while shooting.
@@NTJedi Dont need to be one shot. If you two shot the blocks without overdamaging, its fine as well. In the video it would have saved him 1 hit per iron block, if he had only a litte bit more block damage. He could have mined 3 blocks instead of 2. 50% increase In the oil shale example he would have needed i believe 89 more Damage with the pick axe to mine 2 blocks instead of only one.
9:15 I restarted my game the first time this happened to me because I thought it bugged 😂. Nope just casually one-shotting stone with a T5 pickaxe nbd.
I'm curious whether a level 5 pick with miner 5 would have been better or not, you were so so close to 2 shotting iron that had you had a slight bonus damage i wouldn't be surprised if the results mirrored stone
Would you please test again on digging Iron using Level 5 Steel Pickaxe vs level 5 auger after you have get max mother node and miner 69er since the different is small and it seems you can 2 hit iron after getting max miner 69er.
Biggest reason I like augur is it doesn't use your stamina like picks witch is pretty much the biggest thing in mining it does suck spawning screamers but on old alphas I spawned them mining with steel tools also not sure if you had the same mods on each tool cuz if one has bunker buster and one doesn't the test isn't accurate
Surely the benefit of the auger vs a pickaxe is the fact it's a multi-tool - you don't have to swap to a shovel to clear sand/clay like you do with a pick. This is more obvious when you do the shale test, and when you're mining ores gathering sand is beneficial due to it's inclusion in the concrete recipe. Plus, from a practical perspective, augers keep your stamina bar full, meaning you can deal with random problems turning up with melee easier than if your stamina bar is drained from using a pick. However, if you're buffing up with coffee and red tea, you'd be in a better stamina position with the pick (ergonomic mod on the pick too). It wasn't clear from the video - how many screamers actually appeared in each test? The heat generation change for the auger is a buff, so would be another factor to consider.
Screamers appeared when I said they did, which was about 6 for the iron test with the auger. Every other test had no screamers because the pick didn't generate enough heat on it's own and oil shale and stone don't generate anywhere near as much heat when you break them compared to iron and lead. So even the auger didn't spawn any screamers on those.
Wow, this ma really hates auger. Big thing is as someone mentioned, there is no skill, no perks, no stamina auger wins. Now from the tests. "Everytime I use pick game throws weird enemies at me, like zombie bear" we will not include killing em in the time.. but he includes time for killing screamers...
I think it also has to do with the fact that you using a pickaxe to dig sand along with the oil shale. When sand and clay is ideally best used with shovel
Is your in game time extended? I feel like you make so much progress in a single day where as for me the time flies so fast! Don’t remember if you mentioned it before >
Good video, tho probably good to test with maxed perks and such stuff that increase block dmg. Given the pickaxe oneshots stone and auger doesnt. I would certainly use steel pickaxe for stone and ore mining too probably even tho it might be a bit faster for ore with auger.
i wall my mines off and leave a long corridor open into the top of the open mine pit and put a junk turret in there to deal with screamers and random wandering zombies then i can mine in peace
Is it just time that you are testing with the pickaxe and the auger? Does one mine more resources from the block than the other or is one just faster than the other? Previously, I believe that if all perks were the same in regards to mining they both would gather the same amount of resources from the block. One was just faster at doing so.
If I played this game, I would totally have all the Workstations, and all the guns, and all the Ammo. Because anything good enough to do, is good enough to overdo.
you will never find ONLY 1 kind of book though. You can always find off-spec books as well. Its probably working on a weighting system. Like @IzPrebuilt said, each corresponding perk increases likelihood of book drops by roughly 20%. So you improve 1 kind of book by 20%, but you still have dozens of different kinds of books.
I wonder how many repair kits and how much gas you went through during the testing of the steeltools vs motorized tools. i usually avoid using the latter so i dont have to deal with the constant screamers and the extra gas i rather spent on vehicles than the motorised tools. less resources to mine, going with the steel tools. my feeling is, that you get practically a horde level earlier than in alpha 20. So for example in alpha 21 i see a horde on day 14 i normally got on day 21 and on 21 what i usually get on day 28.
Does coffee mining buff work for both the auger and the pickaxe? If it doesn't increase the harvest amount for the auger, the pickaxe may still be better if you can only two shot an ore type.

I do wish they would have more modifications for specifically the auger / chainsaw, since I believe they are meant to be more efficient, but you cause screamers to spawn more often / use another resource (gas). Maybe a "diamond tipped" mod or something would be good, not just "hehe more gas"
Thank you for going through this pain so I didn't have to, have very informative.
While it's still good, the old one just made auger mining awesome as you just ripped right through blocks with it.
for me the auger will always be better because you dont need to manage stamina
With maxed miner69er and coffee, you really don't use any stamina. i generally spawn a screamer before depleting my stamina so my stamina recharges while shooting.
@@thedevilorder right, but with the auger i dont need miner69 or coffe, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@pumpy_jack Looks like auger is always better, unless you find a steel pickaxe which can do a one shot kill on each ore block.
@@NTJedi Dont need to be one shot. If you two shot the blocks without overdamaging, its fine as well.
In the video it would have saved him 1 hit per iron block, if he had only a litte bit more block damage.
He could have mined 3 blocks instead of 2.
50% increase
In the oil shale example he would have needed i believe 89 more Damage with the pick axe to mine 2 blocks instead of only one.
The purple halo means you are risking a collapse when the water collectors are full. Same thing goes for farm plots.
no it just means that the structure is at its support limit, it will collapse if he tries to put another block on it
Does the XP decrease with MOTHER LODE seem necessary? I usually get rid of it in the progression file because I want more to = more unilaterally.
I am using this exact same base on my server. Its a great POI, I also took the roof off.
9:15 I restarted my game the first time this happened to me because I thought it bugged 😂. Nope just casually one-shotting stone with a T5 pickaxe nbd.
Have i told you how much I've missed watching your video? No? Well, i did now.
zombie bears are a heat trigger event i believe. 15:20
maxed out miner69er the pick is better without question. The auger is for those who spec into other areas.
To sure up the science, you should’ve started with brand new nodes for each tool
Wow! Awesome video. Thanks bro!
35:38 Is it? Ammo usage is way low though compare to machine guns for example.
Now that you have done that awesome video I ask, does the fast swing in the strength perk affect tools?
Good question
Nope, just clubs and sledgehammers.
I have a junk turret watching the entrance to the mine. Plus put in a plug.
finally somebody whos brain works as mine. (that was about the forges etc haha) do i need it? nope but i have to.
That mish mash of textures and rando blocks might explain some of the little lags as they and the zombies spawn in on some pc's?
@@IzPrebuilt ah right, missed that bit, thanks for the clarification.
I made my base in the same POI and I recognized that place immediately lmao
How did you drink from the pool?????
Wow, this ma really hates auger. Big thing is as someone mentioned, there is no skill, no perks, no stamina auger wins. Now from the tests. "Everytime I use pick game throws weird enemies at me, like zombie bear" we will not include killing em in the time.. but he includes time for killing screamers...
you really need to test out lvl 6 tools, because pickaxe would do it in 1 swing then against shale, nitrate coal and stone.
I personally bring an auger with me at all times so that I can break into reinforced chests etc, with ease.
Fetch quests are much easier even if noisier.
the pickaxe, because you dont spend half the day fending off screamers. meaning you actually get more time to mine, and safely.
I think it also has to do with the fact that you using a pickaxe to dig sand along with the oil shale. When sand and clay is ideally best used with shovel
Can one shot sand with pick, makes no diff :P
@@LupusUmbra995 well shoot dang. You are right
Is your in game time extended? I feel like you make so much progress in a single day where as for me the time flies so fast! Don’t remember if you mentioned it before >
That sight being misaligned on the rocket launcher is very triggering😅 but great video love the series
It's interesting to watch, I'm not having the same experience. Book find rate is way down for me.
Terrain rock gives less resource than boulders if I recall correctly, this might be why the pickaxe won that round
Nope
“My money is worthless”
Nah. Melt your dukes into brass for casings. Not worthless, just repurposed.
5+ workstations that you will only partially use just to keep the OCD in check. Yup sounds about right.
If I played this game, I would totally have all the Workstations, and all the guns, and all the Ammo. Because anything good enough to do, is good enough to overdo.
Would have been more fair if you gave the auger the bigger tank mod, half the refills should make a difference imo.
Amazing
I would say that a21 makes the pickaxe kinda useless because of the stamina problem
Didn't even notice till today they nerfed the art of mining book set instead of a 20% chance to 1 shot any ore its now just 20% more ore
Same. It's not documented in patch notes from what I can tell
What would happen if you picked attributes, and only ONE skill for getting the + towards the skill books from looting.
You would find more of the book?
you will never find ONLY 1 kind of book though. You can always find off-spec books as well.
Its probably working on a weighting system. Like @IzPrebuilt said, each corresponding perk increases likelihood of book drops by roughly 20%. So you improve 1 kind of book by 20%, but you still have dozens of different kinds of books.
Rocket launcher day 28 horde night love it!
So for example in alpha 21 i see a horde on day 14 i normally got on day 21 and on 21 what i usually get on day 28.
you have to advance your better barter and the quest reward perk to get better items
Better barter has no effect on the items in the trader anymore. It's just a discount.
Does coffee mining buff work for both the auger and the pickaxe? If it doesn't increase the harvest amount for the auger, the pickaxe may still be better if you can only two shot an ore type.
Unfortunately, the coffee buff doesn't work with auger. Only on pickaxes
@@Ardyey It works with the auger
ngl, in A21 I like steel pickaxe better. With coffee, I don't even need to wait for stamina which gets me mining stone continuously.
