  • (Nov. 6, 2021) Saul “Canelo” Álvarez, boxing’s biggest superstar and consensus No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, made history by becoming the first Undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion when he stopped IBF champion Caleb Plant Saturday night live on SHOWTIME PPV in front of 16,586 screaming fans at the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“It hasn’t been easy to get to this point, but with your support, my family and my team we’ve gotten really far,” Álvarez told SHOWTIME’s Jim Gray (through a translator) following the historic victory. “This is for everybody, especially for Mexico. This is another one for our team. We did it tonight.”
After months of an intense buildup to the fight and ten rounds of back-and-forth action in the ring, the fight came to a dramatic end in the 11th round. Canelo connected flush on a left hook that signaled the beginning of the end for Plant, who fought valiantly in his pay-per-view main event debut. Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) followed up the left hook with a huge right uppercut that sent Plant to the canvas for the first time in his career. Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) returned to his feet, but was never able to recover. Canelo pounced on his injured opponent, unleashing a barrage of power shots that again floored Plant. This time, referee Russell Mora stepped in to put an end to the action at 1:05 of the 11th.
“Caleb is a good fighter,” said Canelo, who shared words of encouragement for his opponent in the ring following the fight. “I have a lot of respect for Caleb Plant. He was a difficult opponent with a lot of ability and I do respect him. We are both men at the end of the day. He wanted to fight me and still continue. I told him there’s no shame. We had a great fight tonight.”
The future Hall of Famer Canelo, 31, already a four-division world champion, slowly broke Plant down over the course of the fight with a steady diet of body shots. 53 of his 117 landed punches were to the body and he landed 40 percent of his power shots. Canelo closed the show landing 9 of 14 power shots in the 11th round.
It was a history-making night for boxing’s biggest star. In addition to becoming the first undisputed 168-pound champion in history, he became just the sixth male undisputed champion in the four-belt era and the first undisputed Mexican fighter in history. “This means so much for the history of Mexico to become an undisputed champion,” he said. “There are only six undisputed champions in history. It keeps me happy and very motivated to be one of the six.”

@Akmal after the first knockdown on the 11th Plant was already stunned. After the second knockdown, as we saw plant could've gotten up, however the ref knew that plant has taken enough damage and he probably didn't want to see him take more punishment had he let him continue to finish the round and the 12th round, thus stopping the contest.

There was a left to the body near the beginning if the 11th by Canelo that made Caleb drop his right hand and obviously hurt Caleb because he didn't protect himself from the quick left jab that immediately followed. Been waiting for this one to get uploaded! Caleb really showed the level he is on in this fight. Bc he had someone to bring it out of him, as we just saw again with Dirrell. Real solid performance by Plant, especially considering at the time Plant made his pro debut, Canelo had already fought 45 pro fights! With only a 2yr age difference! Been a fan of Canelo since 2012 and always will be, but I was rooting for my countryman Caleb Plant. It's these moments like this where you have the opportunity to showcase yourself, and no matter the outcome, leave an impression on ppl saying next time that guy fights, I'm buying it. And IMO that's exactly what Caleb did, he lost the fight, but capitalized on the opportunity.

    • @billyblanco89

@Theplug88 Dirrell was taking it to Plant bru, it was back n forth until Plant took him out. We will see about that my bru, Dirrell gave David good work, you probly didn't see that. David been beating these smaller shorter fighters, Caleb has the height and the speed I say its 50-50 fight. But when David fought Ellis they were evenly matched. Ellis big, strong, and quick but he not as slick as Caleb.

This fight still had me on me feet full of excitement 2 years later. This fight was so beautiful, Caleb’s style against canelo was just a beautiful thing to watch. Both are great fighters, I love the IQ that this fight displayed. Man I fucking love this fight, i think this was one of canelos best performances..

All Plant had in his favour was his height and some dirty tactics ..super average boxer

Anybody notice Caleb kept asking his trainer if it was the third round yet? I think he was getting frustrated with what he was telling him. He let him go as trainer after this fight I believe.

The only downside to Canelo is that he doesn't throw that many punches

    • @mrdark9916

That's what allowed Bivol to beat him.
Plus he punched in 5-6-7 punch combinations which nobody ever really tries with Canelo for fear of getting hammered with a counter

Yeah I noticed in he’s last recent 4 fights canelo barly throws as many punches as he use to and he doesn’t really counterpunch the way he use to he seems to want the throw less punches but power punches , he use to throw so many beautiful combinations I wish he could fight like that again
