Fantastic overview, I would like to point out that those who already have audio interfaces with ADAT Lightpipe, Expert Sleepers has another cv sound card ES-3 mk4 listed for 199$ on Modulargrid and it provides 8 cv outputs. Paired with ES-6 mk2 which offers 8 inputs listed for 155$.

+1 for the ES-8. Bitwig studio can also send CV via the ES-8 to your modular. So that's a great way to get LFO and random CV into your modular without needing to buy a load of CV generating modules straight away.

No waaaaay. I had literally just talked myself OUT of getting the ES-8 today, telling myself the capabilities of the MiniBrute 2S I ordered would be enough for a long while. Then you go and release this video. Well done, now I want one more than ever.
Also worth noting, the ES-8 and MOTU integrate really nicely with the Reason DAW's CV based Rack environment, especially with two recent Rack Extension releases.

    Awesome!
    What should be mentioned.
If you use a DC-Coupled Audio Interface to transmit CV signals you will need a special cable to avoid damaging the interface.
    A floating ring cable.

But do you need a TRS to TS cable out of the audio interface? You seem to use only TS to TS (6,3 to 3,5) cable. Have you noticed any problems with the CV signal sent ? Looking to buy a DC coupled audio interface but I am a bit confused about the cables I should use. Thank you for the demo !

And I was feeling like the coolest kid in the room getting my ES-8 / ES-3 Reaktor Blocks hybrid going. It really is the coolest thing ever!
I especially like using it as a mixing color/texture box. Very easy to send audio tracks/samples into say Verbos Amplitude and Tone Controller, XAOC Belgrad, Optomix, Morphagene, or a Retro Mechanical Labs GPI connected to many flavors of distortion/saturation boxes, some of which have CV control. Taking say a kick (or bass line) from an Ableton drum rack into a Zvex Mastotron while playing with its sub switch and tone knob = massive bass/punch/analog glow. So you also get a powerful reamp/mixing color box setup in addition to a Swiss Army knife of control voltages (you may not yet own in your hardware) to tickle your modules with. Add to that super tight sync that allows you to run your modular alongside your daw with the simplicity and ease of a VST....powerful.
Also sending sections of your rhythm tracks to say the Dynmc input on the DYNAMIX to create new rhythms from modular sounds or samples is so easy. It’s really THE best conduit to fluidly integrate all the joys of modular with your DAW production process.

VCV Rack has limited functionality on my late 2014 Mac Mini., but MiRack (VCV Rack for iOS), works great on my iPad.
The ES-8 is class compliant, so should work with my iPad.
Would be great to use all the great iOS sequencers with my eurorack too.
The Polyend Poly 2, is a nice option for $350, that includes MIDI I/O and usb in.
Manikin Electronic CV-DAC-8 is an 8-channel audio/CV USB interface eurorack module. It sends both CV and audio signals through two sets of outputs, for $400.

Can you elaborate about the latency that the es-8 is introducing? In my experiments with using a Roland aira modular bitrazer as dc coupled Interface (minimal Blocksite 256 Samples) the latency is quite noticable hence it's unusable. When I e.g. send triggers from the modular Hardware to Hardware modules and VCV simultaously the VCV modules get noticebly delayed. Thank you for this Information.
    ES-8 cost 400 Euro =0
    Motu 8 cost 777 Euro =0
The ES-4 and ES-3 with ADAT/SPDIF can do well, but only with SilentWay.
Arturia Beatstep Pro should also work digital and modular, was not trying all the outputs yet.
Also a Audio Interface can CV over the Audio Outputs (in my case Motu UltraLite mk3) can 3,5 - 5,6 Volts over a TRS to TS (ring floating) Cable Type.
But i never try that last setting, i dont wanna destroy my Setup or Rack if something going wrong ^^,
So there are possibilities choose on...for people who like digital modular more than relalife cable patching, should by the ES-8/4/3. A Eurorack Modularsystem will make u poor and depressiv.

I don't own Modular, I am not planning to jump down that rabbit hole, but I do have several semi-modulars including the Arturia MiniBrute 2S you are using in this video. I've always used MIDI - but have pre-MIDI legacy synths. Plus I have been using Motu Interfaces for ever - and never knew about "DC-Coupling" I have 828ES and 8PRE-ES - and the manuals don't even mention it - MOTU website does - 8 DC Outputs each only. I got onto this because Synthtopia had an article about Spektro-Audio CV toolkit today. (Do I need it?) And that sent me searching. Motu Volta software does not seem to be around any more - and was for MAC only, and $$$ anyway. Now I have a lot of new things to learn! Fascinating.

Have you ever used the ES-8 as an audio out/in without the MOTU? I own one, I love the functionality, but sending audio out, into say the Morphagene, and back to the ES-8 seems to color the sound. While it isn't horrible, it is a noticeable difference in the audio from a synth. I do plan on connecting it via ADAT to a MOTU interface similar to this one, but I was not sure if the ES-8 really was for input / out voltages, rather than audio. Any thoughts? I really do appreciate all of your videos you have helped me tremendously.

Hi, thanks for this video, it’s very helpful... I’m thinking about buying the ES-9 and I would like to sai you a question:
I see that it’s possibile to use 2 audio devices simoultaneously in VCV Rack... is it possibile in Ableton Live too on MacOS 11, without creating an aggregate device? Or, of not, at least is it possibile to use my main soundcard (MOTU 896) for sound and the ES-9 for MIDI and CV? Would Ableton “CV tools” recognize the ES-9 as a CV output even if in the Live preferences the MOTU is selected as sound source for input and output?

Nice...looking into an old MOTU 828 mk1(much cheaper than expert sleepers ...)
if I understand it will only provide DV coupled outputs , not inputs correct ? That would be fine as I only intend to send modulation from Ableton CVTools to my Eurorack....the thing is : can I use two audio interfaces simultaneously in Ableton? My other synths and drum machines would be recorded multitrack through my interface Allen and Heath QU-16 interface.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

If your question is about passing audio, then any audio interface would work, just make sure you attenuate the audio before sending it to your interface, and if your sound module doesn't accept line level audio, find a VCA that also amplifies levels, or get a dedicated module that does that (like SBG for example)

I don‘t want to fiddle on the pc, but with effects that I just turn on or off it is a cost factor ... people pointed out to me that modulating reverbs and so on instead of just having them on might be interesting so that is why I‘m asking.

softube is adding effects on Modular with cv inputs for modukation, i already own Tsar reverb now they released spring reverb and more comming soon, but latency can be a great trouble mixing both analogue real thing and digital in particular the way you do, modular sound is great but CPU demanding i mostly use it and sample the results cause the DAW becomes slow soon, i own a powerfull computer for audio,
the best way of mixing both is just usin an external mixer a Sync Gen from innerclock or similar system for sync all your hardware and your go lot cheaper, (no interchanganble cv signal but for what the hell do you want that?), if you monitor through your DSP sound card no latency and all is OK, that´s my advise, cheers

Hi - I noticed your using a "core audio driver" for both input and output however you are using both the Moto and Expert Sleepers hardware for input and output audio. You did however mention you only need one Audio device. Is this possible? I have a Steinburg UR22c and want to route my Model D into VCV rack, modify the sound, and then out again through the UR22c. This crashes the VCV rack when using the ASIO driver. I understand the core audio driver allows multiple audio channels in and out. Is this what you were talking about using only needing one audio hardware interface? That would be nice, but maybe not possible. Currently I can get the Model D audio signal into VCV rack and can see the wave signal on the scope. But then what?
This would be great if it worked! Thanks for your video.

16:15 - do you hear aliasing in the right channel? i'm not in headphones now... but something "buzzing" there as i've heard this.
How much this VCV costs? Is it the only way to use it as an Eurorack module or it's possible to have a "standalone" version? It's really interesting thing because i would like to use some quick and free features like precise LFO and VCAs for external analog devices. Not "from Minibrute to a virtual module" as you've show it here :D

      1. I don't but you and I are hearing the same thing - maybe you can hear aliasing that I can't. 2. VCV is free, some modules cost money, most don't 3. you can use it standalone 4. yes you can send CV out from a PC if you have a proper interface and cables as indicated in the video
