Hello my Fellow bilingual babes of the internet! Today we're sitting down with fellow American expat in Paris @damondominique to have a chill talk all about what it's like being American in France (in a mix of French/English of course)! We filmed this right after I was a guest on his red wine talks (hence the chaotic vibes hahah) but I hope y'all will still find it fun and inspring!
Damon and I have pretty different lives here in France, but one thing we both have in common is our love of Paris and taking the road less traveled. As we both moved to Paris young, we have a lot of shared experiences around making friends in France as a foreigner, the struggle to find an appartement in Paris, French culture shocks and more. I actually remember watching Damon and Jo before moving to France so it was really cool to dive deeper in to the topics around French culture and what makes living here so special as a creative.

I love how philosophical, and critical, and artistic the French are. Whenever I try to have a conversation in that vein in America people are just like "Are you high bro?" lol

lmao that's interesting but you do have to look for people in the right places. Im american and all my friends can have conversations ranging from the dumbest things to philosophy and critique. i love it. we joke around but we definitely value creativity, museums, art, etc

I think EVERYONE should live in a completely different country to their own for a while. It's so important to put things in perspective and is enriching to the soul. You also become aware of the stupid things of your own country and it relieves this pressure to keep up with everyone else.

Juliana Shavers girl don’t worry abt that, you just rlly have to think that you know more than other ppl, like you can talk to French ppl and have a French accent but guess what? YOU WILL BE BILINGUAL that means that you know more than the average person so if you do say something wrong they will correct you and you will learn from it so no hard feelings at all. Just do your thing, no need to be insecure 😊😊

I love how Damon will speak in english, realize it, and then start over in french. i feel like its so hard to force yourself to practice french when English is an easier option so I really admire that!!

When I moved to London, I took Japanese classes, became friends with a Singaporean and then went on a hiking trip to Scotland with her. great times

I totally agree with Damon on the personality question. I've been living in Switzerland for over 10 years, and I'm originally portuguese. And I still feel like I'm different when speaking in french, it's just not the same as in portuguese. I'm not able to tell stories the same way, jokes, and I'm way more reserved in french too.

yes because at that time people thought that water was full of bacteria so you will get sick by washing urself
I remember a girl from England used to just whiff some perfume and no deodorant.
yeah, i’m mexican and in multiple history classes they taught us that aswell, i believe that it was at the time of the Renaissance when perfumes became particularly popular in Europe, because of the fear that water contained bacteria and carried disease, the people would avoid taking baths and wore perfumes instead
I heard it come from ww2, french people couldn't buy soap so they used to made some at home (I'm french and my grand mother still has a recipe from that time), the homemade soap was efficient to clean but didn't smell good like those you can buy. Plus they had less. Maybe American and Canadian soldier talked about this later at home.

I really do admire that concept of having a decade plus loyal, tight knit friendship group. I'm the kind of person who would like to connect with people from various nationalities but with the way the world is set up and how surface level people are these days, I can't blame people for wanting to keep their friend group as it it and not caring to let anyone else in. It is what it is.
I love the bilingual videos ! As a bilingual person myself it feels so natural to see you switch between french and english, I wish I could do it all the time because some things are easier to express in french and others in english haha

I just randomly came across your channel yesterday and this was the second video I watched. Being from Louisiana, born in New Orleans, I've always had an appreciation of French culture. Even though we didn't speak much French ourselves. The food, architecture, fashion, history you never notice growing up in Louisiana until you move away. ( currently residing in Florida ) The last few years I've been exploring French cinema, art and philosophy which has sparked an interest in learning French. I thoroughly enjoyed this video of just two fellow Americans expressing their love of things French and their experiences there. I've subscribed to your channel and Damon's channel as well. Looking forward to more content and your perspective of life in France to help bridge the understanding of the culture there.

About the shower curtain, you have to buy it yourself, a detachable one. We consider it to be a decoration so some landlords just don't put any and let the new tenant do so according to his/her taste. Also, it is possible that the previous tenant bought one and took it when moving.

lol i think it's funny but it makes sense. his ex was someone who catapulted this life in paris for him, i feel. not giving his ex all the credit but it seems like it was years of him falling in love with paris while also seeing his ex.

@@nicholaslowick3381 I am from Ireland, which has been largely unaffected by the virus, and the french boarders are open to people who are going on holiday/travelling for work. I took all the precautions (sanitizing, masks, no public transport, my own cabin on the ferry etc.) I made a video on it, so if you want more info you can check that out xx
