Thank you so much for this video. God bless you! My mom passed away and her jag was sitting in the driveway for so long, my family all have older cars so we couldn’t figure out how to charge it. I showed my dad your video today and now we are charging it correctly. Thank God! 🙏🏼✝️ Thank you!
@@XJLuxuryIs the procedure the same when charging the battery using a Noco battery charger and maintainer, or is there a different way?@Mackhva I'm so sorry for your loss🙏
I just changed my battery today. Had to refer to your video to find the ground! I located the (+) easily on my own. Ty for continuing to post info. I love my car to pieces! THANKS for the bit about how to jump the battery properly. I didnt realize about the ground in the boot.
Once the first end of the ground clamp is placed, some people prefer to complete the circuit to the helping vehicle's ground (or jumping box negative terminal) before connecting the first positive clamp to the discharged battery. If you have both the positive and negative clamps of one end of the boosting cables connected, and then inadvertently cross the opposite end's pair of clamps (mishandling, wet surface, helper vehicle's exposed underhood metal, your ungloved hands...), sparking or much worse can happen, especially if the assumed dead battery isn't. Great series, thanks for all aspects of your XJ experience.
Correct to only apply power under the hood if the trunk won't open. As for the trunk battery jump... the reason for not grounding directly to the battery itself is due to off gassing fumes. Batteries give off chemical gasses when charging or in hot ambient temperatures to release pressure inside the case. those gasses can explosive. you connect red/pos to battery & ground away in case there's any arcing/sparking to avoid fumes in the area... it's rare, but it can & thus, teach the safest way for the general public. it won't hurt anything hooking directly to the battery if it's well vented for awhile (remember when the trunk is closed, that's an enclosed environment. it doesn't' get the same airflow as a battery under the hood does). Most trunk batteries or batteries installed inside the passenger compartment will have a small rubber vent tube attached to the battery... that only relieves pressure in the case, fumes can still be there, so alternate ground is recommended. **Some luxury vehicles have TWO batteries in the trunk (like Bentley etc)... they do different things & you need to find out which one is the starting battery. **Also keep in mind, it takes more power (amperage) to crank over an engine when the battery is in the trunk, the starter is still all the way on the opposite end of the vehicle on the engine... so all that electrical power has to make it the full length of the vehicle (just like an extension cord loses some due to length/resistance) so make sure you have a good power source capable of it.
The positive should be attached to your battery first then the negative to your earthing point. The reason it is not attached to the battery is to prevent any sparks which could ignite any battery fumes causing a battery explosion.
It's because of all those fancy electonic features that are standard on the car. If the battery is not fully charged even it is 12.3 volts, it wouldn't start. The reason is, when you press the Start button all of those electronics will wake up and compete with other electronics to power on. You don't need to buy a flooded battery always AGM. The flooded battery will not last long, maybe 2 years max
i have no power on dash i could not open my trunk like that had to remove rear seats to gain access to plug that opens trunk. took the battery charged it had a load test done and still not getting any power. checked a couple fuses but im not sure which fuse can cause this . not sure what to do, any ideas?
I inherited one of these from a relative. This car is a pain. Who the hell creates a car where the battery is in the trunk and you need power to open the trunk. This is one of the dumbest design decisions I've seen in any product. Do other cars have this "feature"?
I also have a 2011 Xjl , however I am having problems with the battery staying charged. I replace the alternator, but a new water pump, and replace the control manjania. Still, the battery would not hold a charge and the water is linking that cause the car to run hot. If possible can you jnform where is the battery manjania located and what maybe causing the car to run out as well. I like this car but I am really considering saving the car at this poknt😢
I had a feeling mine was draining also until one night, i was in the car and everything shut down like its supposed to and looked around and noticed the vanity mirror behind driver's side in the headliner was on even when it was closed. I pulled it away from headliner and just unplugged the connection. New mirror coming soon.
Yes, I still have my XJL. I’ve been away from making videos right now because I’ve been so busy with a lot of things in my life, but don’t worry. More videos are coming eventually!
Just be aware that this video isn't correct for 2015+ facelift cars onwards. You can jump start these cars from the fuse box under the bonnet. As well as the battery in the boot.

I am very happy to hear that and I’m sorry for your loss

Majority of European cars do have battery at the boot. This protects the battery from the heat of the engine and extreme cold during winter.

Good comment

Wow you made a lot of good points there, thanks for posting.

OK got it
Thanks, most informative. My 2011 XJL Batteries last about 4 years on average.
You’re welcome. Good to know

Oh thanks friend you have much information
Great advice! Thanks!
You’re welcome
Good advise on how to jump the battery in the trunk.

Do you know about the adaptive dynamic fault?
Could be many causes to this. Sometimes a low battery voltage will cause this too.
Hi mate where is yours auxiliary battery?

Believe it or not it’s a very common occurrence and some cars even have the battery behind the backseat.

Do you still drive your XJ? Would love more videos!
Yes, I still have my XJL. I’ve been away from making videos right now because I’ve been so busy with a lot of things in my life, but don’t worry. More videos are coming eventually!
Due to battery issues there ia any chance to get gear box fault
Yes there is. My battery was dying one day when I was driving and I got every fault code imaginable. Once I changed the battery it was back to normal.
Super helpful
So you can’t use your portable jumper to start the car?
It’s not recommended to do it that way but if need be you can just be careful because it can short out things on the car
I have the same Xjl and the battery consistently dies. I even bought 2 different batteries and same this I hate that about this car
Yeah they are battery drainers. Best to get a battery tender.
Great video thanks man!
My pleasure
thank for video helped me

True but I prefer this method.
What do you mean by facelift?
Yes my 2015 has 2 hefty terminals in the engine bay to jump from.
Safer jumping from nearer the load ie. the starter motor.⚠️
The alternator job is to hold the charge from the battery If it's not holding the charge it's not working
I am having this same problem with the same make car.
You can find out if you have a alternator problem by starting the car Taken off the cables off the battery if the car shuts off it's your alternator
