This actually reminds me of how I got a copy of Turtles All The Way Down. I was in high school, wicked depressed, doing very badly, and so broke that I was only eating eggs, rice, and potatoes. Turtles All The Way Down had just come out; I wanted to read it, but I couldn't afford a copy. I was the last person in the locker room at the gym, and I was walking out with my stuff. I looked down, and on the ground, with a couple pages torn, was a brand new copy of Turtles All The Way Down. I looked around for anyone left in the locker room, I checked the inside of the book for a name, nothing. Since it was pretty badly ripped, I figured whoever had it didn't like the book much, so I picked up the scattered pages and put them and the book in my bag. At lunch, I sat in the library and taped the pages back in. At the end of the day, I walked home, sat down, and read the entire book, cover to cover. It made me cry, and made me feel seen, and the fact that the book was abandoned like that made it feel like somehow it was waiting for me. Just figured I'd share.

    • @lanie5759

@@lucasthemycologist I mean, it doesn't have to be a part of the kick starter. It could be a part of just the later sales. But also, there are PDF copies of so many books available, and most people still choose to buy the physical copy, because its a lot of effort to produce a physical copy of a book yourself, and more money to pay someone else to do it. And even still, the result will be different from buying it. Ive seen successful crowd funding operations that had a PDF version of books before. The point is accessibility, and he wouldnt *have* to produce that copy of the book, and hed still get some revenue from it.

@@lexykj Okay, so Hank didn't put it there. Not surprising. But someone had to leave it there.
It looks very 1940s-50s, possibly a 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe 4 door. Not obscenely expensive, but a nicer car at the time.
The dents are localized to in front of the passenger door; nothing else has been touched except by weather. The headliner sagged as a result of weather damage since the front passenger door wasn't closable. The roof eventually rusted to the point of detaching along the passenger side, tearing the ruined headliner. The glass on the front passenger door may have been busted when it was left there, but the other windows probably broke over time. The passenger door was prone to accelerated wear, which is why there's a chunk missing above the window.
I'm not sure if insurance auctioning off totaled cars was common at the time. I'm guessing the owner was left with a totaled Chevy after some traffic signal was ignored, resulting in a side collision toward the front of the vehicle. Rather than take it to a junkyard, they towed it to a field that couldn't be used for much else due to the steep, rocky hills and just... left it there. Because it was easier.
I'm no Rainbolt, so I can't say anything about the surrounding area and how Hank may have spotted it, but it's not terribly relevant to the car whether the land it's on got eminent-domain'ed into having a road nearby that wasn't there before, or if it was just left in public view in a rural area to begin with.

All while he was talking about making different versions of it for sale, I got more and more upset. How do you get part of the proceeds to the person who made the original book?! Are we going to end up with thousands of sentient books around the world? These are all terrible ideas and acts! ... after the video ended and I went to the kickstarter and it looks like something Hank made and then I read the other comments on this video and I guess it's a thing from the book Hank wrote, like a macguffin in that book that he's made into a real life book? I'm intellectually aware of what is happening now and I'm sure it's all fine but there's a part of me that still feels like Hank's a plagiarist book thief now. Okay weird question, but is there a way to not get early delivery, but delayed delivery. Like I feel like I'd rather forget about this book and then unexpectedly in a year, at most 2, receive the book (preferably at a date completely unknown to me ofc). The christmas/march delivery feels like it's just that long that I might still be expecting it, getting a little hyped, and then too hyped for the book to actually live up to. If I just forget about it, I won't get hyped and instead experience it as naturally and authentically as possible as if I'd found it in the trash

I am also on board with this -- I would _love_ to receive this randomly after I've forgotten about it.

Have a friend or family member - or complete stranger, buy the book and agree to mail it to you at a random undisclosed future date?

2:04 "If there's a way to get closer to human, it got closer, if you see what I'm saying" I don't, because you haven't defined what a "human" is (I'm half sassy, half serious) 🤔 You taught me on Crash Course Philosophy about personhood ("deserving moral consideration"), so I wonder if that's what you were going for. How is that "deservingness" even defined, and by whom? Would a book qualify for it?

I'm not allowed at my local bookstore anymore after trying to do "human things with a book"

The quality of the Pizzamas videos is so high that I'm earnestly worried for the effort they will take to continue -- IT'S A PIZZAMAS MIRACLE

I love that “follow the instruction in a random book” also became a subplot in Hank’s novels AART and A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor
