This actually reminds me of how I got a copy of Turtles All The Way Down. I was in high school, wicked depressed, doing very badly, and so broke that I was only eating eggs, rice, and potatoes. Turtles All The Way Down had just come out; I wanted to read it, but I couldn't afford a copy. I was the last person in the locker room at the gym, and I was walking out with my stuff. I looked down, and on the ground, with a couple pages torn, was a brand new copy of Turtles All The Way Down. I looked around for anyone left in the locker room, I checked the inside of the book for a name, nothing. Since it was pretty badly ripped, I figured whoever had it didn't like the book much, so I picked up the scattered pages and put them and the book in my bag. At lunch, I sat in the library and taped the pages back in. At the end of the day, I walked home, sat down, and read the entire book, cover to cover. It made me cry, and made me feel seen, and the fact that the book was abandoned like that made it feel like somehow it was waiting for me. Just figured I'd share.

I get that in reality, this is an activity book made by Hank but while I was watching the video, I was invested in the story of the video so toward the end I got upset with Hank for reproducing a book authored by someone he didn't know since he just found it in a trash can. All while he was talking about making different versions of it for sale, I got more and more upset. How do you get part of the proceeds to the person who made the original book?! Are we going to end up with thousands of sentient books around the world? These are all terrible ideas and acts! ... after the video ended and I went to the kickstarter and it looks like something Hank made and then I read the other comments on this video and I guess it's a thing from the book Hank wrote, like a macguffin in that book that he's made into a real life book? I'm intellectually aware of what is happening now and I'm sure it's all fine but there's a part of me that still feels like Hank's a plagiarist book thief now. Sorry, the video was too convincing with no disclaimers.
Thank god, or should I say thanks paulidin, I was worried someone individually wrote this book, gave up on the idea, threw it in public trash that just so happened to be where a 1 in a million trash searching Hank walked by and found it, because obviously Hank wouldn't steal the idea or lie about it, so to know its meta makes it okay and not a lie
It's funny cus at first I thought he found "destroy this book" cusba lot of people buy it then go eh not for me and throw it out. Then as he got more into the story I'm like nope can't be that book what other activity book is there. And it turned out it was a new unreleased book lol
Before Hank talked about selling it he talked about the book being sentient and having thoughts and desires… I think that is a good cue to start maybe questioning about whether Hank is telling a story…
Excuse me. I believe you have plagiarized my experience of watching this video, and I realize that I did not in fact document my experience anywhere, but I still feel a little like you are a comment thief. Seriously though, he spent so much time talking about being a trash pirate, in that Hank kind of way where he is clearly embarrassed and defensive but knows he needs to be authentic to build a connection to the community. Is this what good writing is?
tbh I'm in college right now and it sounds like a great idea... Though it probably worked better in 1999 than today when most people buy or just download digital textbooks.
Once, my mom found a book in the trash, which she took out because she knew it was my library book, and I would have to pay for it if went missing. My dad had thrown it away without telling me, because he said it had too many swear words. The book was An Abundance of Katherines.
I took Hank completely seriously and I was like "Is this how he came up with the idea for The Book of Good Times?" and then OMG IT'S LITERALLY THE BOOK OF GOOD TIMES!! Also wow this is a stunningly beautiful edition of The Format, what excellent locations
Oh my gosh. My first thought when you said you found a book in the trash was it's the Book of Good Times. Pizzamas is such a wonderful and self-aware holiday that making the Book of Good Times really fits perfectly with the vibe.
As a teen, I went to a music festival with my sister. We fished the cutlery out of every trash can, because you got money back for returning them and people got too drunk to care. We made the tickets back, and more! 😂
*A:* "Hey, wouldn't the original author of the book be mad about copyright??" *B:* "The story of the trash can isn't literal. It's a metaphor." *A:* "Oh, really?" *B:* "I don't know, man. Just trust that Hank wouldn't do a bad."
I got so invested in the story he was telling amd how it related to archaeological and anthropological theories of object biography and objects as actors that I didn't even consider it was just a fictional framing device until reading the replies
"Hey, wouldn't the original author of the book be mad about copyright??" Honestly, even without the reality here being what it is, it sounds like the book explicitly gave instructions to do this very thing, so I doubt the "author" in that case would be upset for you participating in the experiment fully. It's entirely the point of the thing! (Incidentally, there are several great licenses that could be used that weaponize Copyright against itself to facilitate exactly this kind of endeavor if desired or necessary).
I haven't backed anything on Kickstarter since Nuka-Break, but I had to pause this video to go back this one. Love the idea, especially as I'm about to move across the country next month. Seems like a good time for helping a book become a person.
@@EzaleaGraves The Format is what this kind of video is called on this channel, as opposed to the usual "sitting at a desk talking to a camera" style. It began as something Hank did a couple of years ago to switch up the style of gis videos, and then John also started doing The Format and it's become more associated with him as he does it more frequently.
@@EzaleaGraves The Format is a different way for vlogbrothers to make videos, involving a looser style, a variety of locations (rather than just the office background) and a handheld mic with a long cord. Hank made the first video in The Format (see “After 12 hours in LA I’m a stand-up comic doing ASMR with a side gig as a music promoter”), but John named and popularized it (see: “Introducing: The Format”).
This reminds me of a Magnus fanfic I read one time where Jon reads a book that makes him do whatever anyone tells him to. It goes exactly where you’re expecting.

As someone who loves A Beautifully Foolish Endevour and felt a strong connection to the idea of "The Book of Good Times"... yeah. This is an instant yes.
It's always fun when an anecdote starts with "If that sounds weird, it's going to get way weirder." But it being a full-on fantasy story plotline is something only Hank can pull off with a straight face.
I also have a thing for trash. Dumpster diving will do that. Went through a whole phase of dumpster diving at department stores. They throw away returns. Found some awesome stuff and sold it too, like Hank. 💜
DUDE this HAS to be the inspiration for the trash book in A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor! So cool. I never knew there was a real life example for something like that, but I gotta say how you expanded on the concept in your novel was a super dope idea.
It is crazy how often I see youtuber's that I watch comment on youtuber's channels. Love your stuff man! This whole video is so weird to me because Hank doesn't seem like the kind of person that would "lie", but does seem like he might make up a fun story like what Ditocoaf said, so I truly don't know what to believe at this point lol.
@@zanebartlett8004He's kinda retelling a story from his novels. The Book of Good Times is in his books. So the story in the video isn't true, but it's also not plagiarized. He's borrowing from his own book to market in a more interesting way than just saying "yo! The book from my book is real now!", I think.
Hank, I read your excellent books, and I said "The Book of Good Times? Sounds great, I want one!" And then, like a year later, I learned that my partner totally wasn't remembering that we had ever done anything fun or meaningful together because her depression liked to chuck those memories out the window unexamined. So we've been keeping a collaborative journal on our coffee table called the Book of Good Times, wherein we record all of our good times. It helps a lot!! So thank you for the concept, and I can't wait to get your Book of Good Times and do the Good Times in the Book so I can put them in the Book of Good Times. 🫡
Is there any way to order more then 1 copy? I would love to put a few handfuls of this kinda book at the local outdoor shared books library boxes. More opportunities for random people to get their hands on things like this book would be awesome 👌
I’ll be honest, for most of this video I thought the book was just a metaphor for something else and you were gonna explain that near the end of the video but then you said you can buy the book and I was legitimately confused
The Book of Good Times is a prominent feature (character?) in A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour, the sequel to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. (Both are worth a read!) I can see how this concept would be very weird out of context. To be fair, it's fairly weird even in context. Though that can be said for many things in Nerdfighteria - and that's why we love it!
紙 = Kami = paper (折り紙 = origami, folding paper) 神 = Kami = god/gods (死神 = shinigami, death god) 髪 = Kami = hair (前髪 = maegami, front hair aka fringe/bangs) And this is one of the less common homophones in Japanese (this is why kanji is a thing because trying to read all-kana Japanese is a nightmare ww)

@@3elsiyeah . . . the ones in the story are amazing because they are fully contextualized with your life, and they actually know what will make you more fulfilled. I'm still tempted by this one though.
I'm reminded of the epiphany I had when I read that all agriculture, gardening, flower arrangements, produce, etc. is the result of plants evolving properties that convince us to take over the active role in their upkeep, propagation and distribution for them.
I came here to say this. At least something very very similar... Maybe a semi-sentient book/other object some guy tried to throw away but it kept coming back?! I dunno. This is the weirdest deja vu I've had yet.
Of couse everything Hank and John creates is a huge hit. I just backed the KS and the project has more than doubled its goal in just four days. I am excited about this book. Hank, great job on your video montage. Well done!
Okay weird question, but is there a way to not get early delivery, but delayed delivery. Like I feel like I'd rather forget about this book and then unexpectedly in a year, at most 2, receive the book (preferably at a date completely unknown to me ofc). The christmas/march delivery feels like it's just that long that I might still be expecting it, getting a little hyped, and then too hyped for the book to actually live up to. If I just forget about it, I won't get hyped and instead experience it as naturally and authentically as possible as if I'd found it in the trash
2:04 "If there's a way to get closer to human, it got closer, if you see what I'm saying" I don't, because you haven't defined what a "human" is (I'm half sassy, half serious) 🤔 You taught me on Crash Course Philosophy about personhood ("deserving moral consideration"), so I wonder if that's what you were going for. How is that "deservingness" even defined, and by whom? Would a book qualify for it?

Well he did still a Lemur from a zoo once…
Is this what good writing is?
college Hank fishing textbooks out of trash and selling them on ebay is the most Hank thing I never knew was a Hank thing
tbh I'm in college right now and it sounds like a great idea... Though it probably worked better in 1999 than today when most people buy or just download digital textbooks.
I don't know if that's actually true or if it's just part of the made-up backstory for the kickstarter.
@@Ditocoaf oh my god you might be right
Color me intrigued. And color the book whatever pencil I find first.
Once, my mom found a book in the trash, which she took out because she knew it was my library book, and I would have to pay for it if went missing. My dad had thrown it away without telling me, because he said it had too many swear words. The book was An Abundance of Katherines.
WARNING: This ENTIRE video is EXACTLY the way a good Doctor Who two part episode starts out! Oh! I bet it's the bloody Cybermen again!
The Book of Good Times is certified cybermen free! Dalek free too!
what?! who was throwing out real flatware...at a music fest?
This is a great idea, I missed the video, wish I’d seen it before the kickstarter closed!
This reminds me of the journal called "Destroy This Book"
*A:* "Hey, wouldn't the original author of the book be mad about copyright??"
*B:* "The story of the trash can isn't literal. It's a metaphor."
*A:* "Oh, really?"
*B:* "I don't know, man. Just trust that Hank wouldn't do a bad."
*C:* Oh yeah, it's fictional. Hank borrowed that story from his book A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor. So, I guess that makes Hank the original author.
@@untappedinkwell that book and its predecessor are two of my favourite reads from recent years
I got so invested in the story he was telling amd how it related to archaeological and anthropological theories of object biography and objects as actors that I didn't even consider it was just a fictional framing device until reading the replies
"Hey, wouldn't the original author of the book be mad about copyright??"
Honestly, even without the reality here being what it is, it sounds like the book explicitly gave instructions to do this very thing, so I doubt the "author" in that case would be upset for you participating in the experiment fully.

This is like a book version of a chain letter.

THE FORMAT? HECK YES
Please help, what is The Format? I keep seeing comments about it
@@EzaleaGraves The Format is what this kind of video is called on this channel, as opposed to the usual "sitting at a desk talking to a camera" style.
As a fan of Hank Green: Yes! This sounds lovely!!
As a fan of The Magnus Archives: _Sheer unadultrrated dread fills my body_
There's no "from the library of..." book plate in the front, it'll be fine. Right?
This reminds me of a Magnus fanfic I read one time where Jon reads a book that makes him do whatever anyone tells him to.
It goes exactly where you’re expecting.

October 17th for me
The book of good times is an absolutely remarkable thing for sure
Isn’t this how _Death Note_ started? 😅
Similarly
I was literally like "wait, is this a reverse Death Note?"
As someone who loves A Beautifully Foolish Endevour and felt a strong connection to the idea of "The Book of Good Times"... yeah. This is an instant yes.
as a student that is interested in advertisements, this is the best ad I have ever seen
It's always fun when an anecdote starts with "If that sounds weird, it's going to get way weirder." But it being a full-on fantasy story plotline is something only Hank can pull off with a straight face.
This is an absolutely remarkable thing!!
"I've got kind of a thing for trash" Hank? I mean I know you've dumpster dived before but a thing?
I also have a thing for trash. Dumpster diving will do that. Went through a whole phase of dumpster diving at department stores. They throw away returns. Found some awesome stuff and sold it too, like Hank. 💜
Wow, I just watched the Kickstarter page reach its goal within 3 seconds of landing there. Woohoo! 🎉
DUDE this HAS to be the inspiration for the trash book in A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor! So cool. I never knew there was a real life example for something like that, but I gotta say how you expanded on the concept in your novel was a super dope idea.
I don't think anything in this video is true, it's just like a fun fiction thing to sell the book.
@@Ditocoaf I want to believe
Sounds great, I want one!"
And then, like a year later, I learned that my partner totally wasn't remembering that we had ever done anything fun or meaningful together because her depression liked to chuck those memories out the window unexamined.
My partner just finished A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour yesterday after me continually recommending it!!! A perfect Christmas present, thank you Hank
Hooray!!!
Is there any way to order more then 1 copy? I would love to put a few handfuls of this kinda book at the local outdoor shared books library boxes. More opportunities for random people to get their hands on things like this book would be awesome 👌
Agreed, I wanted to get one for me and my partner to do together!

I’ll be honest, for most of this video I thought the book was just a metaphor for something else and you were gonna explain that near the end of the video but then you said you can buy the book and I was legitimately confused
Lol same. I thought he was going to start talking about Generative AI for some reason.
The Book of Good Times is a prominent feature (character?) in A Beautifully Foolish Endeavour, the sequel to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. (Both are worth a read!)
I can see how this concept would be very weird out of context. To be fair, it's fairly weird even in context. Though that can be said for many things in Nerdfighteria - and that's why we love it!
Yeah I was confused as well 😅
Was waiting for him to say the book told him to sell socks
A PURSE!!! I'm glad you put that little image up for when I wound back the video to hear that one again. I was not watching, just listening.

in shinto every object has spirit in it. you awoken a kami.
also fun fact in Japanese "spirit/god" and "paper" is pronounced the same - kami.
That's lovely!
紙 = Kami = paper (折り紙 = origami, folding paper)
神 = Kami = god/gods (死神 = shinigami, death god)
髪 = Kami = hair (前髪 = maegami, front hair aka fringe/bangs)
And this is one of the less common homophones in Japanese (this is why kanji is a thing because trying to read all-kana Japanese is a nightmare ww)

I've read something very similar to this....
As the son of parents from MT, thanks for the sly Missoula area tour. Oh, and thanks, too, for the book.
Kinda fucking sad that I'm just seeing this video recommended to me on October 13th. Big Screen does not want me to have Little Book.
There is something SO creepy about this yet I still kind of want one.
Something about the tone of this in the first half was giving me BDG before the horror twist and that’s a vibe I think Hank could do very well
The truth of this statement is blinding, and now I kinda want to see BDG take this concept and run with it.
Wait, are you releasing The Book of Good Times?? (I’m halfway through the vid)

I knew as soon as he mentioned the book in the trash that this was going in an absolutely remarkable direction
I am also on board with this -- I would _love_ to receive this randomly after I've forgotten about it.
Have a friend or family member - or complete stranger, buy the book and agree to mail it to you at a random undisclosed future date?
2:04 "If there's a way to get closer to human, it got closer, if you see what I'm saying" I don't, because you haven't defined what a "human" is (I'm half sassy, half serious) 🤔 You taught me on Crash Course Philosophy about personhood ("deserving moral consideration"), so I wonder if that's what you were going for. How is that "deservingness" even defined, and by whom? Would a book qualify for it?
