Waste Oil Burner Table Top Size

  • I made a waste oil burner out of a small Blower I bought from fleabay which turned out to be small than I anticipated. I scaled down a design I had in mind and built this as a test platform to see if this idea for a new Design Vegetable oil Burner would work. It DID!
    I'll do some more R&D on this with a bigger blower and modify it to be something useful for cooking.
    This would run for many hours off of the small battery shown. I have not measured fuel consumption but as always that depends entirely on the output of heat you want.
    Don't forget to like and share and have a look at my other 80 Odd Videos by clicking on the channel name.

      "a terrible welder" Well that part is True at least. Would you Believe I have never had lessons? :0) Small burners are definitely the hardest because I think they are so much more critical in air/ fuel and retained heat than larger ones. Also just thought of Bending the tube down after the the air output so all the oil ran that way and not out the front if there was excess. Keeping that hot zone is the thing to keep in mind with these though. I'm sure whatever mods you come up with will be an improvement on this design and look forward to seeing them.

      @@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 The holy grail of pumps for this application is peristaltic or dosing pumps. Some you can program to the exact amount of Liquid you want. Not cheap here but may be where you are. They are used for medical and chemical dosing applications. The little pulse fuel Pump I had in the L burner vid has been good too. With a timer like I showed and a bit of measurement and calculation you could get these fairly accurate as well. Jet A mixed with Veg or engine oil would be good. I'd Like to get a good amount of transmission oil to try. I have a feeling that could burn pretty clean with Minimal residue. Mate of Mine used to work in the Navy on sea kings. He got that special jet fuel with all the anti corrosives in it. Mixed that with a bit of Veg and put it in his Diesel truck and with the few mods he made the thing was Unbelievably quick for a stock engine. Scared the crap out of me a few times in it. Thanks For the kind words mate. You are a Motivation and an inspiration. I have been thinking about that Mega burner we talked about years ago. Still want to give that try to scare the Neighbours.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the compressor designs are wasteful and unnecessary. As I have said 100 times, the key to oil burning is NOT atomisation, it's heat but people can't seem to come to terms with that.
      I have seen people that use industrial engined compressors to try and get enough ait to get into the higher output ranges and still fall short where I can do it easily with a 400W blower.
      That said, don't need much power at all for a furnace to melt ally, 30 KW is heaps if you are doing it sensibly and practically.... unlike me! :0)

      @@glumpy10 Also, I think the idea of preheating the oil and air is a great way to increase efficiency and power output. The simplest way is just by coiling a capilary tube around the burner where it's hot and flow the oil through it. If done correctly, the oil could vaporise before even leaving the tube

    The fuel regulation...
    either....
    Gravity feed .. with a gate tap .. with a cut in it to produce a drip feed ..

    a tee junction with valves and return what's not needed back to the tank...
    Regards Mark UK.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gravity feed I'm just not that big on any more. I find it fiddly and varies. On big burners it's hard to get enough fuel in. On some of my old burners I can get outputs I never could with gravity when I pump the fuel. The T Idea is a good one I have thought of before. Use that method on my oil processors so I can run a pump normally and regulate the flow through the filtering or drying outlets. Also thought of an overflow feed. Could be gravity or pumped. Have maybe a larger tin, outlet on the bottom to burner, larger overflow say half way with a feed from the tank going in the open top. as long as there is a slight overflow, the head height and control of the flow into the burner will remain constant. Over flow is either pumped from catch tank back to feed tank or emptied when it gets full. Still subject to oil thining as things warm up but a lot more consistent than straight gravity feed.

Then the inlet tube with a pipe elbow can be screwed/unscrewed as needed for use. Would make a very compact design for storage. Maybe use a stainless steel scrubbie stuffed down the tube to improve the atomizion?

    WAIT. I JUST REALIZED. You can put some peltier cells near the hot spot! To generate electricity to make it self-sustaining! You'll need big heat sinks and an extra fan on it.
    ps: Maybe have the blower feed fan blow the fresh air through that heat sink to save on fans. It'll probably be a U shape pipe.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I looked at Peltiers recently. I'd need at least 10x 40mm size and have to maintain a 100oC temp Differential between the hot and cold sides to run this. Peltiers put out VERY low power. Not enough surface area on this example but the thing could be scaled up. I doubt this blower would have enough output to keep them all cool enough. Use more power for the blower and one might end up chasing their tail with having to add and cool more peltiers. The return air setup would probably be a bit beyond my engineering abilities but others could give it a crack. The idea has one advantage over self powering though. Pre heated air. Everyone thinks of reheating the oil but that takes VERY little energy relatively. The AIR weighs much more and is a larger thermal mass on drain on the process. Heating the air rather than the oil is MUCH more effective but something else people dont seem to get. Setting up the sealed air passage would be difficult for my ham fisted approach, a small solar panel on an old car battery would run this thing day and night forever really and that's more in my lack of skill set. :0)

    • @dimitar4y
      @dimitar4y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@glumpy10 Very well thought out, though peltier technology has advanced. But yeah a basic small solar panel would be easier, simpler and more reliable. Peltiers do degrade faster than solars do.

Probably why if you feed them 13 or so they burn up quicker. I have had cars I never changed the GP's in for years and then others that seemed to go though them no matter what brand you put in. Other people with the same cars found the same. People have said depends on combustion chamber design and location of Injector. I don't know but just seems in some Diesels they last and some they are real pains. My merc and Nissan were fine with them The Peugeot went though them in months if that. Something else I had for a while blew through them too. Gave up in the end and rigged a Pump to squirt Metho in the inlet and it would fire up on that.

    Greetings!
    I want to melt steel in an oil fired furnace but the flame keeps blowing out.
    The burner is super simple a 36mm ID pipe with a smaller 6mm ID pipe running through the middle of the large pipe and terminating at its end, dripping waste engine oil into the furnace.
    The air blast is powerful enough to where it breaks apart the oil into smaller droplets scattering it onto the furnace wall, the problem is no matter how much I turn the air blower down it still blows the flame out, I tried mixing the waste oil with diesel a 50/50 mix because waste engine oil is more difficult to keep lit but still it blows the flame out.
    I tried shoving a burning rag soaked in oil in front of the burner and then it ignites and burns with a roaring flame but the moment the rag burns out the flame goes out again.
    I know that if I atomize the oil it would be much better and more efficient but it gets way too complicated and costly, also judging from a reply you gave to a comment on this vid that heat is the key to oil burners and not atomization and watching a bunch of Pakistanis melting stainless steel with a super crude drip-fed burner and waste motor oil, atomization is not necessary.
    I have achieved steel melting temperatures before but with radiator oil it was very thin and it burned very nicely.
    Thank you in advance!

      SI may be great for easy calculations, but it's meaningless to me. My brain thinks in American system terms. I know, almost instinctively, what an inch or a foot look like and I'm pretty good estimating those measurements by eye. I'm way too old to change that now. So I'll just convert units as needed via phone app.😁

      @randyvandeusen Because they are just random units. The metric system all joins together, such as 1 litre of water weighing 1 kilogram, and the imperial system. How many ounces is a cubic inch of water? I'm not saying the imperial system is wrong, just confusing.
