Waste oil burner construction and operation for free heating and cooking. . No power needed

  • This vid shows how a waste oil burner can be made that is good for heating and cooking. This Burner is an adaptation of the draft or Drip burner design. It can be filled and left to burn without the need for any drip feeding or it can use a dosing pump for sustained and unattended operation.
    It will run for around an hour once filled but can be much longer depending how fast and how much heat it is putting out. It will burn ANY waste oil or melted animal fat and does not need any power to operate.
    The primary air controls the burn rate and therefore heat output. The design has NO critical dimensions, just use whatever scrap you have and Build it. If you follow the principals of operation it will work and you can get an understanding of how these things really operate and the principals behind them.
    Thank you to everyone for all the kid comments and support on my last video. It means a great deal and was very humbling. I will try to keep the vids coming more regularly.
    If any one knows of a reasonably priced wireless lapel Mic I can put on my camera, please let me know. I'd also like some feedback on the idea of doing an Instagram page for progress updates and contact with my viewers.

    This reminds me of a rocket stove, just liquid oil powered (instead of small pieces of wood). I like it! Plasma cutters look really fun! My wife got me one, but I haven't tried it out yet. It needs a pretty hefty compressor as well as power source. I need to do some wiring first.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Plasma's are Brilliant. I am surprised more people don't have them and are still using grinders. You may find that running the plasma and the compressor at the same time Blows fuses with the power draw. If that happens, pump the compressor up first then switch it off and use what is in the tank.
      I have an old LPG tank from a car which is about 100L that I connect to the compressor as extra reserve. This Cutter has the compressor built in which is handy. I run a solar inverter through the same circuit so I have all the power the Circuit can take and no voltage drop which is handy.

    I like the triangles for secondary air, they heat up and induce turbulence. I'd wrap some exhaust tape around the bottom foot of the flue to increase the burn chamber temperature. I'd look at how I could preheat the secondary air, perhaps with a sleeve. You'd get a better combustion which translates to better kw/l. I have thought a lot and I'm about to build a version 3 rocket stove based workshop heater that should be able to run multi-fuel. I have abundance of pallets, oil and logs, and pellets are cheap. Ideally all in one with minor adaptations,all builtof scrap and cheap local materials. My firebox is lined with 25mm fire brick to add heat to better combustion. I have pre -heated secondary and tertiary air.

I have made a few draft oil burners and whilst they work it's hard to get the air flow right the first one I had to many holes and lacked velocity after blocking some it got cracking but needed baby sitting as the drip feed is hard to get right. I did get some pumps and timers but yet to try them.. I have also made some your other designs and work extremely well and are good for melting the shed they are hard to tame and are noisy. .

      yes, the forced air type are a bit sledge hammer in output and are certainly noisy. This one makes a calming and pleasant noise I find. Certainly no shouting over this one. Pretty much like a good camp fire. I found this design is quitre insensitive to the secondary air holes and only really effect how clean the burn is. That said, I have run it smoking pretty well and the thing turned red hot. I am thinking to do another vid with this when I get a longer flue for it as increasing the draw should also increase the burn rate and heat output.

    When the oil has completely burned is there any ash or deposit in the burn pot? And if so does it crud up or crust up and stick inside this burner rendering it useless?

    • @jeremiahshine
      @jeremiahshine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not if the air flow is right. This is achieved in an "L" rocket stove by a proper sized ratio of the riser to the burn chamber. 4+:2 respectively. In a "J tube" configuration it's 4+:2:1 4+ riser to 2 burn chamber to 1 feed chamber (wood/pellets/acorns/corn.

    Hi, Thanks for the funny and informative video. For your water heat exchanger project, it sounds as though this burner with its soot problems might not be as good as a clean-burning fan-forced equivalent. In either case, I think the best solution would be to complete the combustion at the highest possible temperatures before there is any attempt to extract heat. Could a voluminous insulated cavity with mixing baffles do this?
    I have encountered the soot condensation problem in very tiny wood-fired backpacking tent stoves that stay soot free when burning sticks. However, when fired with supplementary vegetable oil fuel the soot accumulation is very slow, but when burning for hours, this slow accumulation of soot is terrible. In my case, I think the soot problem stems from my tiny compact burn chamber that is also acting as my heat exchanger. Hope this makes sense. Tim

    Joke's on you lad! We americans know all about liters because them's the sizes what our liquid diabetes comes in.
    I think maybe you'd get a cleaner burn if you put a restrictor plate inside the pipe. Just a metal plate with staggered, small-ish holes drilled around the outer edge to allow the hot gas to flow, just welded right in there.
    If the gasses only come through around the sides of the casing, you can place the air inlets there to ensure a thorough and even mixing of fuel and air.
    It could also slow down the burn and keep the fuel hotter, since all that gas is coming in contact with the plate at some point rather than going straight up the chimney. Might be worth trying!

      hE HAS TO HEAT UP THE OIL TO ABOUT 200 DEGREES F before it will run. I Heat our 10 car garage with old engine oil and have to heat with a blow torch for about 4 minutes then let it burn for about 10 minutes, then I blow air with an old furnace blower into the pot. we melt our pots made of 3/8 (10mm) steel away in a month or so. I put a brake rotor over the top with a 2 inch air gap between the pot and rotor and drip and blow straight down into the pot from directly above. The brake rotors boil away in a week. the flame is so bright you can only look at it with welding helmet. but it is inside and old wood furnace for heating an entire house. It has an 8 inch stove pipe and will not run with a 6 inch pipe with out back puffing. the unit only smokes out the stack on start up, once running for 20 minutes you can only see heat waves coming out of the stack. It runs 10 hours a day every day but Sunday all winter. our engine oil is unfiltered we burn about 50 gallons in 4 1/2 days. I have to clean the dirt out of the pot every morning before starting it, but it is much easier than filtering your oil and then having toxic wast filters to deal with. I start with a cup of diesel then drip the engine oil once it hot. The carbon and dirt from the pot can go right in the trash. Ive been running ours In this final configuration for 7 years. I tried 27 other configurations before settling on this one. You could run it cooler and the rotors would last three months, the pot could go, 4 months. But we have a very old garage when the wind blows we feel it on us inside LOL. So I run it really hot. Good luck ... I don't know and don't really care. :0) There are a lot of contradictory laws but the reality is unless someone dobs you in, which they encourage these days now Oz has gone completely down the tubes, no way for them to find out.
      I believe you are supposed to have a burner licenced if it's over 600 or 1000 KW, forget which now but I don't really pay attention to any other nanny state laws. If you are reasonable and don't have plumes of smoke or ignore fire bans, never known anyone to have any trouble here.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My suggestion would be to burn them hot as you can n every few days. The soot is a problem on this design even if they do burn clean. The other thing you could try is to give the thing a hard burn on kerosene or Diesel which should be cleaner and might remove some of the soot. You need to hit around 600C for the soot to burn out.
      The other thing I have just found is flue length makes a big difference. I added to mine and the fire burns much more intensely. When I can get some materials I'm going to do a 12V low power forced air design for heating as they self clean and avoid the soot problems.

      Oh i forgot to say that i actually have found that burning kerosene for some reason makes more soot in the pipe. In fact, i think the majority of the soot that builds up in the pipe comes from the cold kerosene startups, because when i run it on kerosene is when it really belches black smoke out the of the stack. Wheras on oil alone, once it is warmed up, it just has a light haze of brownish grey smoke

    Welcome back! How the devil are you? Cool design. My wood stove used to have a flue that was about 30 feet tall (which for the rest of the world, is about 30 feet tall). It had an automatic dampener of sorts on the back that would let ambient air into the stack to actually lower the draft/suction on the stove when it really got going so the stove didn’t get too hot. Good problem to have. Your water heater idea sounds interesting. I’ve seen a simple design for a self contained charcoal maker with an oil drum filled with wood and a flue going up the center that heats up the wood and once it gets going, the wood vapors are fed into the bottom burner tubes and it sustains itself until all the volatiles are burnt off. Your burner is similar and could be used to start something like that- sort of an oil/wood hybrid (not sure how much wood you have around there). Anyway, keep up the great work.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen those char Kiln designs and I wonder why why everyone does not do them like that instead of letting out Plumes of smoke. Smoke is just unburnt fuel so to waste it is inefficient to me. Also seem people making oil from plastic and cracking motor oil. The let vapours drift away which is un distilled product.
      When things get back to some sort of normality ( if ever here) I'd like to do one of those Char Kilns. The auto flue Dampener sounds brilliant.
      Having a variable secondary air intake with one of these would work well I think. Thanks for the idea!

    • @ProlificInvention

  • @metagen77
    @metagen77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's not burning clean because it's not hot enough, in a rocket stove they isolate the burn chamber and extract the heat from the hot gasses. Your big draft introduces a lot of cool air and loses a lot of heat straight out of the chimney.
    Insulate the burning area, and redirect air intake to flow across hot surfaces to preheat it.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is something to think about. I would like it to burn hotter just for cleaning purposes but I'm not having a lot of luck with that. I haven't seen anyone use this principal of burner that has so I put it down to a limitation of the design. Thanks for the suggesting though, I'll have a think about putting that into practicality.

    you mentioned the burner isn't as efficient as forced air, doesn't always burn all the oil.
    Kerosene heaters usually have stainless screen to retain heat to help burn fuel better Catylitic burners use metals like platinum for exothurmic consumption of many kinds of fuel
    I was wondering what kind of inexpensive metal would heat up faster and help combust the oil better, maybe🤷‍♂️
    I'd imagine stainless baffle maybe with holes would hold head and provide turbulence to mix fuel and air not sure though just thinking out loud😂
