Calling out Ola Englund

  • Dream Theater fans who lambasted the trend of fake Instagram and TH-cam guitarists are in a bind, now that there is evidence of musical deception committed by LaBrie and Petrucci. I chose to make an example of Ola Englund in this video, but there are many others who are guilty of similar hypocrisy, including Become The Knight, Rick Beato, Nik Nokturnal, and Steve Terreberry.
To be clear, I think Ola is a good guitarist. I've liked his playing in every video of his I've ever watched. On the subject of Dream Theater, he had a blind spot.

To all of the folks saying "the Instagram video is obviously a joke," it's not obviously a joke, due to the sheer amount of crap that's been going on with this band since 2015-ish. If someone had told me 10 years ago that Dream Theater would make an album of warmed-over Disney musicals, and then LaBrie would start lip-syncing, I'd assume they were joking. You really can't put anything past this band at this point in time, and they never clarified the Petrucci video was meant to be a joke.

I agree with a lot of the points you make in most videos. But this video is obviously a joke or simply something meant to tease fans.

i completely get what you feel about the band but dude, just stop acting as they owe you a damn thing. just chill and enjoy the music they have written while they were in their prime. it's a live show, Petrucci has to play lots of complex stuff and everybody knows he's lip-syncing for ages. who cares? i personally don't and i wouldn't consider this as a problem. LaBrie should have quit the band when he was still a respected vocalist. overdubbing the vocals of the whole live album is just another level of "LaBrieing" but did he fake some of the lead vocals at the live shows? lol it's better for me. i already paid for a show in the summer and i don't want my ears to bleed. you can't theorize everything. i used to watch and dig all of your videos the time you were MrDreamTheater2 but the point is, you really should stop attacking the band in this way. looks just childish to me.
like Akerfeldt said once, people carry their favorite bands in their pockets as if they own them. anyways, On the Backs of Angels solo over The Enemy Insıde is fucking dope.

@@sepita10 yeah and probably they won't realize but about the caring circumstance, i guess it all comes to personal perspective thingy. i'm a musician as well and i'm thinking if i had complicated guitar work similar to Petrucci's, i wouldn't even attempt to look like i actually sing. the backing vocal stems would just go in and go out and there wouldn't be a microphone in front of me. maybe that would be better tho, nobody claims they sing the backing vocals in that situation.

A lot of fans or DT lovers act like the band owes something to them, it wasn't some sort of personal criticism. I've seen some of these videos and footage from their latest live shows. It's CLEAR some things are being hidden on purpose and overdubbed, it's a shame but I can understand the reason for it.
it's sad though because it basically means Labrie is completely worn out and can barely sing at all, I wish he could take a long break and try to heal his voice but commercially I suppose they can't stop.
I don't believe these actions are done in order to deceive fans, I do believe they're trying their best to be professional towards the outside. I personally stopped listening to them almost 10 years ago.
It reminds me the mili vanili story where all of it was fake and it was discovered (there are different versions as to how it was discovered) and the Grammy was taken from them.
I don't believe anyone is going to take their glory and frankly I don't understand the purpose of the video.

At those recent shows LaBrie got a bit better, but they still fake that bridges in the sky part, even though he's now capable of singing it. What a travesty, I swear, I'd rather prefer LaBrie to sing with a real time pitch correction that seein him just fucking mimic singing and ape around the stage (even out of sync with the playback, lol)

All the bands he despise or doesn't care about, like Black sabbath, Megadeth, Death or Voivod are million times more progressive and creative than any of the modern djent prog that he likes...i mean, he thinks it is cool to be self-proclaimed "music snob", even though being any kind of snob is a really bad thing.

I talk about him in my video called "Who Wrote Distance Over Time?" He doesn't interest me too much as a target, nor does Ola. There are so many opportunist idiots on TH-cam, so little time. I'm particularly irked by people who specialize in "reaction" videos, or grade-school level humor applied to rock and metal - Steve Terreberry, Jared Dines, Samus66, Bradley Hall types. One thing you'll notice about these fake ass "rock and metal TH-camrs" is that they rarely, if ever, take genuinely controversial stances on anything like I do. No balls. They just want to fit in.

      1. Really bad drum engineering on 2013 album
      2. Live At Wacken
      3. The Astonishing
      4. Continuing farcical vocals from LaBrie

As long as it's interesting, the performer can have a flop or two. I really don't mind.

I think BC&SL was their last decent effort. Coincidentally their last record with Portnoy.
Anyway, the writing and melodies from I&W and Awake have never been reached again.
They became a show-off technique band, especially recently. The fanboys probably had something to do with it, with their constant hype and elitism for decades.
I still remember this comment "with Kevin Moore they were 100% Dream, after they became 100% Theater", or something like that. Wich isn't far from the truth.
