  • What is the most reliable car brand? Is Lexus the most reliable car brand on the planet? What is the cheapest luxury car you can buy? Should I buy an Acura? Is Honda a good car? What cars are cheapest to own? What cars are cheap to insure? Are Japanese cars best? Japanese vs German cars. Why is there so much plastic on modern cars? Why is plastics used in engines today? Today we go over my 2006 Acura TL. This vehicle is now 18 years old and it has been incredibly reliable. The exhaust is still original. The check engine light has come on just once. It's not too difficult to work on. You won't find plastic here! The engine construction is all metal. Intake manifold is metal. Valve covers are metal. Hose clamps are metal. The water pump is metal. It's also quite cheap to insure. And being a Honda, parts are easily accessible and very affordable. Of course, Lexus is a wonderful vehicle. But over time, certain Lexus models, such as the Lexus IS, tends to rust. The Acura TL is a better option in rust prone areas.

2008 Acura TL Type-S 6MT checking in. 253k miles. I've replaced: upper and lower control arm bushings, cam thrust seals, all 4 shocks/springs, spark plugs, coil packs, pcv valve, valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals, ac clutch relay, hood struts, both front axles and axle seals, evap purge valve solenoid, trans fluid, clutch fluid (and did clutch restriction valve delete) and an o2 sensor. So mine hasn't been quite as economical, but it's a blast to drive every day and I enjoy putting as many miles on it as I can! It's an EASY to work on vehicle if you have basic hand tools. I bought a shop press from harbor freight to do bushings and it's been a fantastic investment. I have no check engine lights and you can tell when you drive this thing will last for years and years to come, even with high mileage.

I purchased a brand new 2006 six speed manual transmission Acura TL in 2006. I had that car for 10 years and 168,000 trouble free miles. These cars are great looking into this day and Run like a Honda as in perfect, I highly recommend these to all kids these days as a great first car and if you can find one with manual transmission go for it!

Honda/Acura really tried with these 3rd Gen TLs for the North American market, still see many on the road daily, built to last outside of the cracked dash/torn seats and glass auto transmissions in the 04-06 ones

Smh I agree if you get a good TL but let’s not forget they are not that reliable unless you get a manual one the automatic transmission fails on these which is an arm and leg to replace and so on ball joints sometimes power steering whistles btw this car has 3 cat converters with like 4 sensors which is still annoying

The 2007 Acura TL has a 5-speed automatic transmission that's more compact and robust than previous models, with a higher torque capacity. The transmission is electronically controlled and features Acura's Sequential SportShift system, which is inspired by Formula One racecars. This system gives drivers the option of self-shifting or manual control, and was reprogrammed for smoother operation and better gear holding in 2007. The TL Type-S model also has the option of a 6-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential

I have state farm insurance. The annual premium on my 2000 TL for just liability is $70 cheaper than that of full coverage on my 2024 Camry LE. Have no history of traffic violations and accidents.

2004 TL, problems were starter (replaced with remanufactured one about 5 years ago), knock sensor, normal wear items such a battery, brakes, tires. Thanks to youtube videos I have been able to do all the work myself! Still a solid car with 20 years on it! Oh, I change all the fluids myself; here is a reminder to change out that hidden transmission fluid bypass filter! Ah, I just started getting the pesky dash cracking! The TL is a well engineered car. I even checked out replacing the fuel pump because of the age and was surprised to find that they had thought of that with an access plate in the trunk!

Having owned 04 6MT since 2012, here are what I say:
-The front lower arm compliance bushings are poorly designed. They begin cracking at about 10K miles
I've replaced them with Hardrace' metal bearing bushing
-The APP (Accelerator Pedal Position sensor) goes bad at about 150K miles
-The throttle goes bad at about 150K-200K miles
-F/A sensors & HO2 sensors may go bad at about 150K-200K miles
-Typical Honda valve cover & oil pan seal allowing oil to seep & needs re-sealed at about every 70K miles
-Fit & Finish are not impressive, with large gaps between body panels & interior panels (wouldn't pass quality control in Japanese market)
-Inadequate rust protection in snow belt
-Poor quality paint, typical of Honda
    -Large turning radius
-Engine mounts eventually fail & are expensive to replace
    POSITIVES:
-Great exterior design that doesn't age even after 20 years
-Robust engine that can take a lot of abuse, as long as the oil & timing belt components are changed at intervals
    -Reliable air-conditioning
-Aluminum alloy front subframe that does not rust & lightweight
-The OEM exhaust plumbing from header to tail pipe rust-free even after 20 years. Tried aftermarket free-breathing pricey headers (pipe-A), and they all dveloped tear at the flex section in relatively short period (a few years).
-More stable on snowy roads than AWD SUVs, as long as snow tires are equipped (all season tires don't do a thing)
Verdict: If one can do the repair & diagnostic, the TLs are a jewel. If not, look for new cars.

I used to own a TSX of the same vintage, it's also extremely reliable and very well built. Was a 5000 car when I bought it about 10 years ago. Just wanted to throw it out there as an option.

I own an '05 6-MT (bought new), and an '07 AT. These haven't been as reliable as Hondas I've owned previously. AND the interiors are complete, cheap, plasticy shit. I've never seen a dash crack like these have, and i live in a very mild climate, the SF Bay Area. Also, the worst leather I've seen on any vehicle, hands down. Paper thin.
Mechanically, they've been mediocre. The AT is notorious for clutch and pressure switch failures. These are probably the last Honda products I'll ever own. I've had far and away better luck with the two Toyotas I own.

Good video Dude, I own a 2013 TL with SH-AWD, And a 2019 TLX with the A-Spec trim. I love both cars . The TL I have had it for 7 years and it only has 89k . It drives like a new ride! I have only done regular maintenance. Oil changes, tires and batteries. Needless to say I will keep my Acuras until they die.

@@tilynnrainey3262 Hi , I love the 2019 TLX A-Spec better, because it has some other exclusive options that the 2013 TL doesn't have. For example the LED Jewel headlights are nice! And the Red Ambient LED lights inside are very cool!

I had the sedan version of the same Subaru, it was great but I had to get rid of after 160000mi. I kept having cat issues, got the head gasket fixed but the whole intake was getting gummed with oil still and I was losing at least a quart of oil every 3-4 weeks. Absolutely love you videos! Hope you get a 3rd Gen Prius someday and start working on that :)

Thank you for this tl information!!!! I just hit 217,000 05 to all original equipment just put a new timing belt! I am having issues with the drivers side xenon headlight intermittently going in and out. To replace the igniter and ballast is so expensive that as the original light equipment is so intricate! The car still flys it is still relevant today.

I have an '05 and it's been a gem. I'll be replacing the o-rings on the PS pump per your instructions. I do have an unusual problem that I'm hoping you have a trick to repairing. The air bag light has come on, and I've traced the problem to a switch in the lap belt latch. Shooting it with electrical cleaner helped for a few days. I'd appreciate your guidance on this one. Thanks for the great videos.
