      Same! I was raised in Galveston, and I, a Latina, grew up celebrating Juneteenth every year with parades, food, and performances. I had no idea it wasn't celebrated everywhere until I went to college.

    • @HercuLync
      @HercuLync 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Galeveston is ground zero for Juneteenth. The reason it wasn't celebrated everywhere is because a lot of other places had their own celebrations centered around their own hometown's emancipation day. Places like Detroit picked up Juneteenth because their state didn't have an emancipation day. There was a big argument over whether Juneteenth or Dec. 6th should be the national holiday. The wrong day won. @@alanacholmes

    I disagree with the celebration timeline. My mother (1923-2008), born and raised in Dallas until age 19 never heard of Juneteenth until she saw a poster in Berkeley CA announcing their 8th annual Juneteenth Celebration. This was on the late 90's.

    1. Juneteenth was ONLY a Texass holiday... there were Two northern states that still practiced slavery 5 months later.
    So in theory the end of slavery would be December 18th and not June 19th.
    Keep in mind that we were still finding slaves in the late 1960s who never knew they was free!

      @@ludokerfluffle6232 If anyone has ever been to Washington DC and visited Capitol Hill, the US National Archives building is about a block from Congress. The 1942 USDA video *Hemp for Victory* was found in the Library of Congress in 1989 and has been officially listed in the US National Archives since 1990. There was a bill in Congress titled HR 3652, the *Hemp for Victory Act of 2019.*
      Let's review: a video from 1942 was listed in the US National Archives in 1990, but didn't reach Congress (a block away) until 2019 (and still didn't become law because barely anyone has heard of it ).
      Nothing makes sense because humans don't make sense.
      We call ourselves a "free country" while we pay billions of tax dollars every year for police to wage war against our fellow Americans over the exact same "Marihuana" plant that was legalized to defend America during World War II, and video proof of this generations-old lie is on everyone's cellphones at an official government website but not even Senators have heard of it.
