- Preston Sturges’ screwball masterpiece is typical for the director, mixing outlandish slapstick with colorful characters and outrageous plot twists worthy of Mark Twain and Voltaire. There’s a touch of melancholy about the duplicitous romance between Barbara Stanwyck’s luscious but two-faced card shark and Henry Fonda’s hopelessly naive beer magnate but it’s mitigated by another stellar Sturges supporting cast including the magnificent William Demarest who has the (literal) last word: “Positively the same dame!”

Love love love this movie!
And that scene with horse…magnifique!
I have a rare love for this movie! It's pure gold!
If we're talking screwball comedies I want to add Bringing Up Baby. another favorite!
Best romantic comedy of all time in my opinion with His Girl Friday right behind it. Amazing era that really brings up the feminist issues that we're still struggling with.
Out of those 4 years I'd also put The Palm Beach Story right there with Lady Eve and Sullivan's Travels. and Christmas in July and Hail the Conquering Hero sure are close.
Love Rudy Vallee in TPBS!
Lubitsch was also a great comedy writer.
I'm more partial to Hawks' BALL OF FIRE because Barbara Stanwyck has a great set of legs.
Totally agree with Peter Bogdanovich !! This one is the one of the best screw ball comedy there is, but I slightly put "His Girl Friday" over it.
Great film.
Good movie👻
I think Unfaithfully Yours is his masterpiece.
