Rochdale has gone the same way as my birthplace Farnworth/Bolton which has been taken over by the religion of peace as a lot of once beautiful NW towns have. Could you please visit Alderley Edge there’s a fantastic circular walk/hike up The Edge for you to go with Helen. Great vlog as usual James 😀👌

A few of the shots James shows us in the precinct could be any town in the UK.
I've mentioned this a few times, glass, featureless consumer monoliths devoid of all life and character.
Some of the centuries old masonry in our cities and towns practically could not be recreated these days. We've lost the know-how and with it we're losing our identity.

We're at a point in history in England where if you happen to say 'can't we try and fix our own problems' then you're accused of all sorts of nonsense. Serving in the British forces in early adulthood taught me important lessons..
I've learned that if you don't fight for your heritage it will slowly be taken away from you inch by painful inch, and I've also learned that government (no matter who they are or which party they represent) they never have the electorates' best interest at heart.
I could go on all day but I don't wanna bore you James.
Great video and thanks for shining a spotlight where it's needed

I'm a 53 year old Plumber. Been self employed all my life. I worked with my Dad for over 30 years. When I first started work with my Dad he said when he was first at work they were promised the average worker would only work 3 days a week as the country was so well off? Things have changed so much. I feel sorry for kids today as the worlds so confusing. I live near Bath. It was once a thriving city with every shop you could think of. Now its a drivers nightmare full of cafe's bars and hairdressers.

My brother used to work with my dad as a plasterer and my mum didn't need to work as his wage supported the family, allowed us to go on holiday, albiet not abroad but camping to Cornwall. How times have changed for the worse ! Now both parents need to work, pay a fortune for childcare which often means its not worth going out to work so have to rely on benefits - How can that be called progress ?😔

I moved from London, I could not stand it anymore. I was born in Cheshire, but lived in london since I were 3 years old. 55 years later. I moved to Bridlington and love it here. I know that u love Brid also. Some locals will moan about Brid. I tell them that they do not know how lucky they are. Beautiful skies, gorgeous coastline and countryside. Hi James, I’m an avid watcher of your channel and also a councillor - though not for Rochdale. Without knowing the problems in Rochdale I can honestly tell you that local services are run on a shoestring these days and in particular this includes the emergency services and NHS. Residents will be upset with increasing council tax bills and at the same time reduced services - but the truth is that central government financial support for local authorities has dropped off a cliff and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. The biggest problem facing local authorities right now is managing to not go bankrupt. It’s shocking and upsetting…so councillors have to do so much with so little and encourage communities to play their part in making things better.

The former Drake Street canal basin could be beautifully restored and use the canal. It will brighten up the station area and put bars, restaurants, shops and accommodation around the basin and they will thrive. It will be aesthetically more pleasing than industrial units which will not be used. But the council won't speculate to accumulate. No brown envelopes for them.

100% agree James...the previously proud north of England which was once the power house of industry and commerce, producing thousands of products that were sold all over the world is all gone. No money is being spent in the north...the levelling up is a joke. Now our towns are empty, boarded up shops, closed down factories and mills and the people are no longer people from the area...(of course there are a few). Turkish barbers and vape shops seem to have taken over every town centre...I wonder why? In another town I counted 13 Turkish barber shops in one street with no customers...so what are they really about?? It's time someone looked into what is really going on. Come and see Accrington next James, if you can believe it- it is even worse than Rochdale...our once beautiful country is being allowed to crumble right before our eyes. So sad and unfair.

Hi James these small towns were once lovely places to live but when mills factories and mines shut down money went elsewhere. Things aren’t going to get better in the near future and it is depressing as you say. it’s rather frightening to be honest. Good luck finding a happy place next time you know you can do it😂 xx

Well done on a balanced view of Rochdale. When I saw your destination town I wondered how you were going to tackle it, bearing in mind your oft-stated wish to stay away from politics. At the moment, it would be wrong to go to Rochdale and not mention the many socio-political problems the town has. I think you got it about right. These northern towns are not at their best on a cold, rainy February day. Another vlogger visited Bolton (my birthplace) last summer on a nice sunny day. Didn't look as grim as you found it, with people bustling about. As a suggestion, why not give them a rest for now, and revisit in the summer. Instead, I'd love to see you, and Helen, out in the countryside again now the weather's beginning to improve a little. Blow the cobwebs away. In fact, just going to re-watch one of your Lake District programmes!

I've delivered many cars into Rochdale, and there used to be a sign on a railway bridge that read "Welcome to Rochdale, the birthplace of Co-operation". I stood under it with my trade plate marked Liverpool (my next collection) and a sign saying "see above"....It certainly paid dividends because 10 minutes later I got a lift in a van going all the way, and he dropped me right at the door. Now that's what you call co-operation!.....I've not been there for a few years, and I'm sure that sign is no longer there. So maybe it should be reinstated, to give the good folk of Rochdale their pride back.

@@KeithChegwin24 spot on. Working class people need to stop voting against their own interests. They are taking the bait on the culture wars -- which is entirely fabricated for this purpose -- instead of looking at policy and which candidates will advance policy that supports the interests or ordinary working people. The fact that so many working class people voted for Boris Johnson, a man who wouldn't waste his spit on them in the street, because he trotted out enough racist tropes, says it all.
