Five-door hot-hatch comparison : Volkswagen Golf GTI v Peugeot 308 GT v Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV

  • The Volkswagen Golf GTI has long been the preeminent hot-hatch for keen drivers. But what if you’re after a European small car with a little extra spice, that isn’t the Volkswagen? What are some alternatives? And how close can they get to the benchmark GTI?
Taking on the Volkswagen Golf GTI today, we have the Peugeot 308 GT and Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV.
And here with us is Alistair - who contacted CarAdvice asking, “If you don’t want to follow the GTI crowd, what other sporty hatchbacks are worth a look?”
    -
Paul: So tell us, why don’t you want a Golf GTI?
Alistair: Nothing against the Golf at all. I think it’s a great car. But I used to have a Peugeot 205 GTI and I’ve always had a soft spot for the Italian marques. I want something a little different but also something that can comfortably accommodate myself, the wife and my little one Harry, who’s three.
Paul: Fair enough. Right, well let’s kick things off with the Golf…
Paul: Ah, tartan seats and a golf ball-style gear knob. It’s not hard to tell that you’re in a Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Starting at $41,990, the six-speed manual Golf GTI gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 162kW and 350Nm.
Paul: You’ve got really premium materials and this 5.8-inch touchscreen with sat-nav. The GTI also gets what’s called Driver Chassis Control - which let’s you choose between five different driving modes for the engine, steering and suspension.
Paul: Should we try out the Peugeot?
Paul: It is yeah. Now, the 308 GT is the same price as the GTI but has a smaller capacity engine, putting out less power and less torque.
It claims 7.5 seconds 0-100km/h - which is a full second slower than the Golf - but it betters the GTI on claimed fuel consumption by almost 10 per cent.
Alistair: …And it’s nice in here. The seats are good, the space is good and it looks like there’s plenty of room in the back for my little boy and his child seat.
Paul: You also have a bigger boot than the Golf and there’s this fairly massive 9.7-inch colour touchscreen that looks after all of your navigation, entertainment and climate controls as well as vehicle information. Very cool and it means a much cleaner centre stack here.
Paul: Now while all the cars here have five doors and drink 98-octane premium unleaded, the little Alfa - with its engine and gearbox pinched from the rear-wheel-drive 4C - is the fastest and most powerful of the lot.
Alistair: And again, very different from the Golf in here.
Paul: Yeah. It is a fraction dearer than the GTI but you get these cool bucket seats and this in-dash 6.5-inch touchscreen. Unfortunately you also have to physically turn the key to start it up and this flat-bottom wheel feels huge compared to the one in the Peugeot.
Paul: While that was interesting, we are at the track. So while Alistair sizes up the backseats, we’re going to set some lap times with the help of CarAdvice’s very own tame, racing…driver… No?
Dave: No. Just gimmie the keys Paul...
    -
Paul: So comfort, price and features are all important, but we want to know the times. Alistair…?
Alistair: Yeah no worries. Golf GTI - Best lap - 1min 7sec.
Alistair: Just ahead of the Golf with a best time of 1min 6sec… the Alfa Romeo…
Paul: Wow, so how far behind was the Peugeot?
Alistair: Only 1 second behind the Golf, the Peugeot’s best lap was 1min 8sec.
Paul: So the more expensive Alfa Romeo was faster than the Golf GTI around the track but you weren’t sold on its rear seat space. The Peugeot was the slowest of the three but you liked the styling and its winning space and boot capacity. And of course, there’s still the Golf GTI.
So, do you still not want a Golf? (laughs)
Alistair: (Laughs) I really like the Golf and there’s no doubting it does most things well. But the Alfa really impressed me around the track and the Peugeot really impressed me off the track.
It’s a tough call, but I think I might have to go with the Golf…
Paul: So there you have it.
And remember, if you ever want to know something about a car or have a specific question you’d like answered, contact us via CarAdvice.com.au.

I had a Fiat bravo sport and the inside shared similarities in parts used so if felt like it was the same car. That was my only reason against the giulietta that I so keenly wanted.

Probably the Golf GTI still a better all-rounder, but VAG products... Yes, except for true Porsches (911, Cayman/Boxster and the limited-edition hypercars). Even Lamborghinis have lost part of their wild charme after their company has been purchased by Volkswagen, except for the Murcielago that also was the last one to fit the V12 Ferruccio Lamborghini designed himself: most VAG products have some boringness in them. And that not just a problem of halo: they always also feel not to be as much as proficient as their direct competitors in fact of driving.
What they do the best is to sell exactly what most appeals to the majority of the market: comfortable "furnitures" to go to A to Z in safety and comfort. That's no bad, but if we are talking about driving i wouldn't go for the Golf...

comparing 308 GT with Golf GTI on performance basis and saying that Golf is "better hot hatch" is rather sensles... of course it is beter, cause it has more powerful engine and it has a drivetrain and setup that suit a proper GTI, while Pug is just a bit more "capable top spec" model.... it is like comparing Mini Cooper with JCW and "discoverig" that JCW is "better"
and about Pug's "obstructing" steering wheel... I'm 1.72cm tall (slightly over 5ft7in) and I had no problem viewing it's instrument table over the steering wheel....so, i find this something like those flowers on the dash of first new Beetle... somebody stock them there in the first test and then everybody repeated that endlessly in every test after that...

Mirko Zlikovski This wasn't just a performance comparison, Mirko. The performance test formed part of the comparison, but wasn't the only deciding factor. The 308 GT was in here as it was identical in price to the Golf GTI. We are a huge fan of the 308 GT and think that come the 308 GTi, the Golf GTI will have a big challenge on its hands.

I honestly think you can't go wrong with either the Alfa or Golf.
I owned a Giulietta QV some years back - I havent driven a Golf GTI yet, but do now own both an Audi S3 and a Skoda Octavia RS245 (which is effectively a heavier, less aggressive GTI).
I dont think the Skoda is any quicker then the Giulietta was - they are pretty close. Giulietta felt a bit more aggressive uder acceleration, but the issue with that Alfa motor is that it has a very narrow bandwidth - it's got very noticable turbo lag down low and it dies of very quick in the top end, so it really only feels like it's pulling from 2,500 RPM to about 4,500 RPM, and outside of that band if feels like its doing nothing. This means you really need to change gear a lot. I had the manual and found it quite frustrating when navigating carparks or when going up steep hills because of that turbo lag requiring you to constantly drop a gear. The Skoda feels much more linear in it's power delivery - it pulls fairly strong even from 1800 RPM or so and right up to 6,000 RPM. To be fair though the Skoda is a DSG also, so that probably helps - if I bought the Giulietta again I would probably get it in TCT mode because it would be more drivable in those low speed / high incline type scenarios.
And it's a shame to say that because the Giulietta manual actually is really nice - quick, short throw shift and very precise. The clutch is a bit touchy/sensitive though and can take a lot of getting used to, especially for hill starts, etc.
As far as handling goes I thing the Skoda is more stable in high speed bends, which seemed to be the weakness of the Giulietta (it would feel a but unstable in the rear end at times). With some light damper/suspenson mods and the TCT gearbox I could imagine the Giulietta being a pretty fantastic little thing to drive...and to be fair the Skoda I'm comparing it against is a 2019 model, so abou 5 years newere then my Giulietta was.
One thing that the Giulietta did impress with was refinement. You dont really expect to hear this about an alfa, but it was actually a very solid feeling car. Very smooth, quiet and refined and it was pretty good over bumps too. I think it was just as smooth and refined in every way as the Skoda, though the Skoda does have some better build quality and material quality - albeit the difference isn't as great as some reviewers would like to have you believe. The S3 is obviously a big step up in quality and performance, but I won't even compare that because it's obviously a totally different class of car.

1st - The VW would fight back with the Golf R, so the GTI wouldn't do you much good. Alfa would be behind though as they have yet to introduce a compact engine with higher HP.
2nd - It would be a different engine tier, it wouldn't be a fair comparison, the Golf GTI, Alfa QV and Peugeot GT are in the same tier and insurance group, so the difference would be which company did a better job in designing their cars overall.

Golf slow steering ratio makes this car horrible to drive although it has a nice chassis. Maybe it is faster than the Alfa when you drive it on the edge, however the everyday feel is on a different level. Compared to Giulietta it feels like you race a dead pig. Golf is a benchmark only in sales, that should be said.

  • @ryanmilner4315

I always thought that the Golf was the fastest, but I bought a Giulietta because it's an Alfa Romeo and now I'm glad knowing that the Golf is now second best. The Peugeot's steering wheel is too small and the majority of French cars are being driven by slow, useless drivers.

I would buy a golf but they're too common now, same as the fiestas. I've drove quite a few cars in my little time driving and the one that stood out to me the most was a alfa 159 even though it was 12 years old it drove flawlessly for it's size and weight, the only other car I'd say handled better was a mk7.5 fiesta, but that was practically brand new.
My next car will defiently be the giulietta 1750 tbi

  • @monique6490
    @monique6490 ปีที่แล้ว

Sure, the Volkswagen might be the cleanest of all these three. But that's the exactly the problem with it. It's too clean. Plus the driving assist can't be turned off to 100% like with the Alfa Romeo, Renault Sport, Peugeot, DS or Ford which is very sad. It's too smooth, there's almost no resistance you have to fight against, and that's the most fun part when driving a sports car. To tame the beast💯
While the Volkswagen is the cleanest,
The Peugeot is the most nostalgic,
The Alfa Romeo is as always the most emotional though.
So everything is as it should be.

So the alfa wins the lap tests...then the looks, power, noise, design,....what did the golf win....nothing......yet it placed first! The "decision" is frankly rubbish. I've a 2018 Giulietta Supersport in misano blue and a bmw 220 msport coupe in estoril blue...yeh i love blue...but i love cars that perform/drive/grab your heart/are exclusive blue......they are both diesel...but they absolutely fly with massive torque.......i pick one each morning.....no favourite....but no golf gti.....because gti is too generic, bland, lacking design or flair...yes its got a good engine but the rest is....yawn....and predictable. And i did have a passat 2.0t petrol turbo sport 197bhp 2006 that i loved...but it never pretended to be a great car but it was..... a wolf in sheep's clothing....golf.....blah! Buy a bmw 2 coupe for handling but love a giulietta for being that bit different with handling ....and fun....and makes u smile on the inside....and misano blue is just a great colour, dark alloys, red spiltter, super stereo, the cockpit.....be yourself and get one....who cares. BTW the 220d coupe is a complete cracker too. Grin........
