  • When we hear think of the animated film produced by the Walt Disney studio, we’ve come to expect a film of a certain quality, rich in music, character and story, and exceptional in its visuals. But that expectation is one built upon a tradition of innovation that often goes unheralded.
So with the recent announcement of a live-action 'Lion King' remake, let's go back to the beginning and see what it was that made their work so special in the first place.

Unfortunately creativity doesn't always lead to profitability. We should support innovation and the pushing of the art not the lazy buck

I have nothing but respect for Iwerks, but that's not true. Iwerks left the Disney Studio in 1930, and Disney's multiplane camera didn't premiere until 1937 with 'The Old Mill'. In 1933 Iwerks created a multiplane camera, but he used it much in the same way that Lotte Reineger used her prototype int the '20s - as means to create SFX.

He rejoined the studio 1940, but in a purely R'n'D SFX position from that point onward. He was instrumental in developing the xerox process that enabled '101 Dalmatians' to be made (and Hitchcock's 'The Birds', on which he was a consultant and for which he was nominated for an Oscar). I'm not sure in what capacity, if at all, he worked on 'Mary Poppins', but he worked on combining live-action and animation in 'Song of The South' in '47, which I imagine was probably done in the same way, though not as successfully.
Also, glad you enjoy the videos :)
