as a young female animator myself it's so cool to know that one of the pioneers of animation was a woman. furthermore, this animation 100% still holds up today. it's beautiful and expressive, and the fact it's so well synched to the music knowing that she created all of this traditionally makes it all the more impressive.

Thank you so much for posting this. Brilliant to see this original film done on her and her technique, itself a beautiful window into history.

thank you. I'm an illustrator and animator. I'm shocked I didn't know anything about her! I've just discovered this amazing artist.

The V&A Museum of Childhood had some of Reiniger's characters on display when I visited in 2015. Looking them over proved an emotional experience, even though I have never actually watched any of her films in their entirety.
    That's some magic indeed.

Thank you! A friend on DeviantArt mentioned her to me when we were talking about cartoon history. She seems like a real pioneer on this field!

3:22 The puppet in this is a wayang that has existed since the 10th century in Indonesia. So this show is inspired by Indonesian wayang.

This is fascinating, and amazing…does anyone know specifically the kind of paper, for the backgrounds and what is the lead?

See, the films Reineger made herself weren't in traditional animation, but paper cutout stop motion! People say she animated traditionally but it's not all that. The characters are paper cutouts.

In animation it's considered the same field. Both stop motion animation and drawing based animation use similar pose to pose techniques to get the illusion of a fluid movement. There are a multitude of camera shots layered to create the illusion of movement.
