Another amazing review, great work guys! Just one thing to mention as an Ex-Toyota/Lexus service advisor in Darwin, one thing we found for the CHR's in terms of ownership was that, compared to other more mainstream models like the Corolla, Camry, Prado etc, the CHR has really weird Tyre sizes, and therefore it would always cost owners like 3x as much to get their tyres replaced than most other models - perhaps this was also contributed to due to our remote location in Darwin, and such uncommon tyres as CHR tyres were not stocked readily in Darwin all the time, but I'd imagine it would be a similar story down south. So yeah, just some potential value to add to this video, if you're looking to buy a CHR, make sure you're getting the best price possible on tyres as they can be very pricey due to their uncommon size. Cheers

Well done! I have a 2019 CHR XLE with TRD performance part here in the States. I also love the way it looks. It is my daily and I have had ZERO issues with it. It does take me a long time to wash it because I treat all the plastics on the outside and it has a lot of exposed plastics but after 5 years of daily use, the car still looks and drives like new. Actually there was one issue when things were not displaying correctly on my dash board but that was because the battery was going out (I have a 2.0 liter non hybrid) and the issues were fixed with a new battery. Again there is something to be said about that legendary Toyota quality. I looks forward to having this car for a long time to come.

An interesting used review. I have a 2019 model, 1.2 litre turbo with a 6-speed manual. Purchased Feb. 2020. I’ve had no issues at all. It isn’t a road burner, but with a manual transmission I can get the most out of the engine. And in sport mode, I can get a little extra pep. On long trips I have managed 4.8 litres per 100 K’s. Very good on fuel. Overall, I’m still very happy with it. I would have liked to have seen a mention about the manual, and what the mechanic thought about the manual too. There's no good news in the back seat, it's a sea of depression and misery back there. It's like Toyota took a ride in the back of a CX3, and said, hold my sake, we can raise the suffering level.

But you know it’s actually a great car! Reliable, easy and fun even if a bit sluggish, coolish styling….head unit sucks but i can live with it.
1. Our JBL read loudspeaker system simply failed (replaced under warranty) The 12v battery failed in less than 4 years. Towtruck driver said this was happening a lot. New batteries have a warranty. No on-road problems of any kind.
I did buy one, a 2019 pre-facelift version with 1.8L hybrid engine, eCVT. No regrets so far. It is indeed not the fastest car, but it gets the job done very well.
I loved this car! I purchased it new in 2018 and my transmission went out Dec 2023 and it only had 78,000 miles on it. Toyota wanted $10k to replace it. I eventually bought the 2023 Highlander and love it.
The funny thing about these types of cars is that, although typically car journalists cannot rationalise buying one, the crossovers will somehow be the best selling segment. Look at the Mitsubishi ASX! It's rubbish on paper, but people will happily buy one. I guess for the buyer it's a predictable, safe option.
Mitsubishi ASX is not just rubbish on paper. It's rubbish to drive. I drive one at work. Marginally better than walking. My wife's 8 year old Mazda2 is far, far superior.
Too bad the 2024/2025 Euro/Asian one has a larger screen. Heck even the driver cluster is all LCD. Oh, panoramic sunroof, surround mirror, Digital rear-view mirror, self parking. So much more features. Oh, even a PHEV model.
Adam, love your - no BS - videos. But the amount of adverts is getting ridiculous mate. Usual YT at start, 3 other advert breaks during and 2 breaks for sponsors. 5 breaks in a video lasting under 20 mins. Not cool.
Well the channel needs some monetization. Ads + sponsors are keeping them afloat. Patreon is an option but it's up to the channel and not every content segment is suitable. So just get over it. You have to pay with either time or money (yt premium) for the content. Do you think the production is free?
Thanks for your great, fun to watch reviews! 😃 👍🏻 I love the styling. I remember sitting in a new one checking interior quality in 2018. I fiddled with the indicator/flasher and wiper stalks and noticed the when you operate one, the one on the other side moves. Toyota cheapness + that digital clock from the 80s! The boot was small, the back seating quite claustrophobic.. Also priced high in comparison. 😂 You're 💯 right when you said it just doesn't inspire you. Just those exterior looks are fantastic.
Hopefully you have flushed the CVT at 30k miles. My 2018 XLE has just over 50k miles and will get another flush at 60k miles. I don't care what Toyota says - the CVT sucks ( K114 ). Variator bearings are the culprit.
The CH-R to me always looks like a pissed off Rav4 for some reason. Like the new video format layout but one thing that'd be good would be a bit of music for the transitions between segments. Surprised at how practical yet aesthetically pleasing the interior is. Was considering one of these for myself but the blind spot and non-mechanical problems, while rare, are pushing me towards the Lexus that shares the same platform or a Mazda CX-6. Good video guys and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍.
Its style over practicality. My 84 year old grandfather bought one for the high seating position and ease of access. While it is easy to get in and out of theres lots of shortcomings. Its too dark in the back and its hard to see to the side due to the large A pillar
I have one, my wife has a Mazda CX3, my Koba CX 3 is 30% better, my wife agrees. I’ve driven 260 000 kms and it hasn’t missed a beat. Interior has maintained its look. Only two issues were no Car Play on my Dec 2017 model and the colour of one lower panel below the boot has faded a few shades in comparison to the rest of the car.
We have the 2017 1.2 for over 3 years, apart from performance it’s great, yer there are blind spots but the spec gives you warnings when cars are along side or close by, park assist works so I don’t get the issues, only issue we have had is failed air con compressor replaced under warranty, only the very fussy will worry about the slightly dark rear on a day to day basis, the touch screen is slow, you can press the button a couple of times while waiting for it to react. The 1.2 is economical but it’s 113bhp is not enough for this size of car, overtaking in UK busy country roads has to be well planned it’s fine on duel carriageways or motorways it does keep up with the flow of traffic, I would say you need 150bhp to be perfect mix of performance over economy, we only get 3 engines the 1.2 1.8hybrid (which is only a little faster) and the 2.0 181bhp which is still nothing more than adequate plus in the performance stakes (newer models may have different specs) but it’s reliable, dependable and super easy to live with if you like it which contrary to this review nearly everyone I know does) then I would say go for one, my Mrs likes it so much we she is looking at another to replace it, can’t say fairer than that !
I love mine for these reasons: There is only limited number of these cars left. They had very short production cycle. Will be worth a fortune one day. Unique look, inside and out...no other car out there like it. It turns heads. Fun to drive. Feels like a sports car. Toyota reliability and dependability.
Just got to keep up with that K114 CVT maintenance. Flush that fluid every 30k miles and it should be good. One owner has over 150k miles and I think he will be dropping the pan to check on it and change the filter.
A very RARE bird indeed. Only seen one in the last year. Mine is a Ruby red/White one 2018 XLE. In Sport mode it moves. With the Remark exhaust - growls for what it is.
First, i bought a corrola cross hybrid.. But later i also buy this so called CHR just for the look of it.. It is the most handsome non sportcar around..
I bought a 2022 CHR and have had no issues. The motor is good enough and as long as you service it properly, it seems to be of Toyota quality. It’s no Corolla but better than any Ford you’ll find Highly reccomend if you want a bigger car but not a full SUV. It has some quirks !
In the UK you get a 10 year warranty up to 100,000 MILES so long as you have the car serviced annually at a Toyota dealer If you want some extra excitement look at the new C-HR plug in Hybrid, 7. Something seconds 0 to 62mph (100kmh) We have had ours 6 years with only 1 issue, a flat battery during COVID as what not driven for 3 months, and the battery has not given any problems since The proof of the pudding is it cost £30k in 2018 and they still sell for £15k+ with less than 40.000 miles and it is not surprising with so few problems and 4 years of warranty still. My Jaguar I Pace cost £65k 5 years ago and only worth £20k now, but better to drive than the C-HR😂😂😂 Great and honest review by yourself
I seriously love this car from the moment it came out. Firstly, I like the design and another plus point is the brand Toyota - long lasting ease of mind to own and maintain. I like myself a car that doesn’t give me another life’s filth, like what Jim said 😂
Don't go near them if they aren't the hybrid. Non hybrid CVT transmissions can have massive issues. The eCVT transmissions on the hybrid are indestructible. I have a 1.8l hybrid and I don't think it is underpowered. It is less powerful than any diesel I've owned but I love it still.
The K114 CVT has major issues (check the C-HR forums) and most likely from driver abuse and lack of fluid flushing. I had my 2018 flushed at 30k miles. May have the pand dropped and CVT filter changed at 45k miles due to my C-HR being nearly six years old.
I just bought a CHR hybrid The only thing I need to comment on is When the cruise control is on The car wants to do its own thing and you are fighting it
Thats the question I am asking, this or a KONA or Mazda. The thing I really hated about the C-HR was the rear, its extremely uncomfortable, the rear visibility out the back is poor, and the boot space is a measly 366 liters (compared to the Konas 433 Liters). There is a compromise...the Yaris Cross its boot is 398 liters and although not as comfy as the KONA beats the C-HR. You could look at the revised C-HR as that fixes alot of the above but as they are brand new, they wont be cheap.
I helped caradvice with a podcast and test of these in a weird comparison that's still online against my 1988 Corolla 4wd Wagon. The Corolla wagon won as its practical. However I was surprised how well the 1.2 and CVT went went in the C-HR compared to the 1.2 in the work Skoda Yeti with DSG. No flat spots and smooth if droney power delivery in the C-HR . hated the dark interior of the C-HR always thought we should have got the new Corolla wagon in Australia instead of this overstylised SUV.
Hi all I've been driving my 1.8 exel for six days now and my commute to work is 12 miles wich can be a drain on the hybrid battery ( not enough miles to charge it ) just wish they had a function so you could sit there for ten minutes to top up the remaining few plates I get the whole point of saving the planet but surely the emissions produced wouldn't be as bad as driving a extra ten miles or so to achieve the same goal
Any chance of a review on Australias least know car? With a TBTL factor of just 0.25, but with one of the most useful and clever floor plans, as comfortable as an old Lexus, drives like a Camry, but has a huge belly. With zero claustrophobia in the rear, or rear rear seats. Air conditioning for everyone, very popular in Singapore, which also happens to be the most expensive country in the world to own a car. Seats fold to create a perfectly flat floor for camping or hauling crap. Not a Tarago or Alphard. Sold officially in Straya from 2001 to 2010. What could it possibly be?
We never got a manual or AWD (IIRC) in the U.S. plus I don't do SUV's. It's a product that looks great up front, like a Honda in the rear, falls in-between categories, and was NEVER on my radar.
The ones commonly available in Australia are all fairly new and barely 3-4 years old. The older gen ones (2are rare to find and didn’t exactly have a reputation for being anything but cheap so they can just be ignored.
I was once homeless, and got taken to an appointment at public housing a few years ago. The case manager called it gutless and I made my way to finding a place just to avoid being in one of these things again.
If you are really tall rear seat passanger, you can see out of the side window, just. Want to know if you suffer claustrophobia? Just go for a 5 minute ride in the back.
My olds just bought a new hybrid corolla and I remember my Father telling me about this new sporty car called a C-HR. Think for me the blind spots on the car are enough reason to not buy one, just buy a corolla or Yaris instead if you are after a small hybrid. If I buy something small myself I want a sporty manual car so that would rule out the corolla and yaris unless you get the GR.
This car is slower than my 1.4L 2009 Hyundai Getz to 100km/h I like the looks of it, but it's bordering on being a dangerous car , especially when overtaking
Love the look of this little SUV. Agree with Adam thay should put the Yaris GR motor & driveline into this and it would be a sales success. VIVA-LA-TOYOTA!
Great job on the review Smart looking cars .. and of course Toyota reliability ! That rear seat not great for claustrophobics .. and yeh the blind spot !!
It's a great car with some quirks. It drives great, it's super reliable, it's comfy, it's incredibly nippy (less than 5 liters on 100km with the 1.8l engine are possible). People wanting a sporty car will absolutely avoid the CVT, visibility is a bit annoying at times, the trunk door is really, really heavy and the trunk has a big load lid (that's why it's certainly not ideal for elderly people or small females). I don't know how the owner of the car in the video managed to fuck up the interior like that. Are her hands made of sand paper?
I think that person driving this car wears rings on left hand and that is why the left side of the steering wheel and automatic transmission gear selector is so worn out.
I saw one of these the other day and thought it looked pretty cool. Went home to do some research only to find out it's underpowered and not surprisingly, over priced. Surely this should have come out with a 2 litre turbo! Looks like Japan are back to making underpowered cars like they did in the 80's with models like the 4runner; big car/truck/SUV whatever you want to call it with a tiny underpowered engine. The last time I saw power figures like this was also in the 80's. I guess if all you're doing is driving around town and you're a hairdresser, this car is for you. But at that price, I'd prefer something else....anything else. Underpowered and over priced, pity it looks so good.
You're quite right about the Toyota line up. Their cars are very down in power but every now and then they'll get the GR Dept to make a performance version. There's too large a gap between the normal engines and the HR versions. The recent hype Toyota has been getting is only due to their GR versions. GR 86, GR Supra, GR Yaris, GR Corolla. Otherwise no younger people would even pay attention.
I live in the UK and do 90% of driving in the city, 30-40mph max. The hybrid system has very good pickup at those speeds. But none of that really matters when I get over 80mpg on some runs and i have peace of mind with 10 years warranty
@@mdo yeah good point. I guess if that's the sort of driving you're doing, then this car is spot on as I mentioned in my post. Here in Australia, it's under powered and dangerous for overtaking on our many freeways, highways and main roads.
The 1.2 Litre engined version is the one to avoid. I cannot comprehend why they brought that to the market - unless it was just for the school run by timid soccer mums - or as a first car for new drivers. Go for the 1.8 or 2.0 Litre Hybrid versions. The latter will NOT disappoint in terms of acceleration or agility for the average user. If you’re a racer demon, buy a GR version.
Any CHR owner having water leaking through & to the underneath of the rear door ? I have been going back to the Toyota service centre multiple times and the problem still persist.

A problem with many current cars is a lack of vision through the rear quarter. C pillars are freaking HUGE on modern cars like this.
This C-HR and the Honda Crosstour are my two favorite-looking small SUV-things by far
Me chr and cx3
About the dark rear seating of the C-HR… vampires🧛 love it! No sunlight!!!!🤪
I had one for 3 years. Never had a problem great car to drive.
Weird, in Euro land, Toyota offer a 10 year/170Km warranty, if they service it. Btw, Own hybrid one, love it!
My mum brought a 21 Red/black roof Koba brand new! Bloody brilliant car.
I like the touch screen,I like how you never need to use it.
The voice commands are good for a laugh though.
Not cool.
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying the vids
Get TH-cam Revanced, it automatically skips all those segments for you.
Pay for youtube, no ads at all. It's what I did.
I love the styling.
Mine is a 2018 with 65,000 miles and nothing wrong with it thank god
Hopefully you have flushed the CVT at 30k miles. My 2018 XLE has just over 50k miles and will get another flush at 60k miles. I don't care what Toyota says - the CVT sucks ( K114 ). Variator bearings are the culprit.
@ nop, I have not
The CH-R to me always looks like a pissed off Rav4 for some reason.
The blind spots aren't that relevant, because of its sensors.
:) as an owner of a 2018 Rav4 XLE (used rental ) and a 2018 C-HR XLE (new) - I would agree.
Its style over practicality. My 84 year old grandfather bought one for the high seating position and ease of access. While it is easy to get in and out of theres lots of shortcomings. Its too dark in the back and its hard to see to the side due to the large A pillar
I love driving my 1.8 Dynamic Bi tone, they stand out from the boring norm on the roads. The only thing I have found is the noise at 70mph.
I love mine for these reasons:
There is only limited number of these cars left.
@@stevenv2190 I have 29 year old Volvo in my family. It has 352,400 miles on it, and transmission fluid was never changed. Not once. Car runs great.
I *REALLY* want a turquoise/teal one of these.
A very RARE bird indeed. Only seen one in the last year. Mine is a Ruby red/White one 2018 XLE. In Sport mode it moves. With the Remark exhaust - growls for what it is.
I got one 2 years ago . so far nothing drastic to complain about
First, i bought a corrola cross hybrid.. But later i also buy this so called CHR just for the look of it.. It is the most handsome non sportcar around..
I bought a 2022 CHR and have had no issues. The motor is good enough and as long as you service it properly, it seems to be of Toyota quality. It’s no Corolla but better than any Ford you’ll find
Highly reccomend if you want a bigger car but not a full SUV. It has some quirks !
In the UK you get a 10 year warranty up to 100,000 MILES so long as you have the car serviced annually at a Toyota dealer
If you want some extra excitement look at the new C-HR plug in Hybrid, 7. Something seconds 0 to 62mph (100kmh)
We have had ours 6 years with only 1 issue, a flat battery during COVID as what not driven for 3 months, and the battery has not given any problems since
The proof of the pudding is it cost £30k in 2018 and they still sell for £15k+ with less than 40.000 miles and it is not surprising with so few problems and 4
years of warranty still.
My Jaguar I Pace cost £65k 5 years ago and only worth £20k now, but better to drive than the C-HR😂😂😂
Great and honest review by yourself
Sick sick design,I love it😍😍😍😍😍
Have you seen the 2024/25 C-HR - sorry USDM, not yours
Just buy one. Love it. The xle 2021 it amazing. Or at last after a 10 hour of used it. 😅
13 minutes for you to start talking about common problems and that section only last 5 mins out of your 20 minute video.
You read my mind !!! Im after a second car and I have this on my list !!! 🎉
What’s your thoughts in comparison to a Nissan Juke, because I like the quirky looks of both
took a carpool service and rode on the backseat of a CHR one night, i haven't felt so nauseated in a car in my life
Best rear door to get in the car!
Well render me un-shocked! That was the one after the Tercel? Doesn't matter, yours is the looker in the family. ;-)
yeah that's the one. Still going with original radiator and clutch at 300,000kms@@UncleJoeLITE
Disappointed? Many people (including me) love the CH-R. Being everything is part of its uniqueness and charm.
Got one by accident when I hired a car in Adelaide - it was the "or equivalent". Found it claustrophobic, hard to see out of, small boot - not a fan.
My 2020 chr koba has high Klms and never had an issue (320,000klms) weekly interstate driving
Im sad the hybrid is not all wheel drive
The adaptive cruise control is another selling feature
My 2019 CHR 1.2T CVT transmission broke at 130 000km. Toyota tried dodging the replacement of the transmission 3 times
I test drove one of these a few years agoafter my 2009 golf needed it's second gearbox... The CH-R was zippy but poor vision out the back...
Everytime I see one of these its always being driven by a middle aged or elderly lady. Just an observation.
Australia is just a massive middle aged or elderly lady with the odd dickless combover keeping it company.
Or by my hot wife. And it's certainly a bad car for an elderly lady.
😂So true. But those are the ones to buy when shopping used!
Yeah target market in my opinion... but those willing to accept the blind spots...
She swaps between them pretty quickly for an older bird - I've seen her too!
you’re literally my comfort person i love you kislux !
Now I live in USA and I bought CHR that is built in Turkey. So, I probably got the one with bad CVT transmission
We never got a manual or AWD (IIRC) in the U.S. plus I don't do SUV's. It's a product that looks great up front, like a Honda in the rear, falls in-between categories, and was NEVER on my radar.
Hey mate, the BMW F Gen 440i, the alternative to the M4, would be a great review given the M car prices are out of reach for most
2000 mile engine oil swap. 1 year on coolant, trans fluid and filter, large transmission cooler. the price you pay for efficiency
How much does that curved back end affect luggage space in the back?
I'd love to see a Haval vehicle soon!
Why? Google 'Chinaman takes a dump' and there's your vlog. 🙄
@@Flaming-Hedgehog I'm afraid to google that lol. If 5gis vlog is real, do you mind sharing the link?
The ones commonly available in Australia are all fairly new and barely 3-4 years old. The older gen ones (2are rare to find and didn’t exactly have a reputation for being anything but cheap so they can just be ignored.
I was once homeless, and got taken to an appointment at public housing a few years ago. The case manager called it gutless and I made my way to finding a place just to avoid being in one of these things again.
Okkk cause a homeless Person is going to complain about ac and roof over their head , get lost faker
Nice place to be in with you for a trip
I don't touch the door when I am driving 🤔
An actual GR version of this (i.e. powertrain etc) would be so so good.
Best looking car Toyota makes.
Not available in USDM - 2024/2025 C-HR GR does exist
If you are really tall rear seat passanger, you can see out of the side window, just. Want to know if you suffer claustrophobia? Just go for a 5 minute ride in the back.
My olds just bought a new hybrid corolla and I remember my Father telling me about this new sporty car called a C-HR. Think for me the blind spots on the car are enough reason to not buy one, just buy a corolla or Yaris instead if you are after a small hybrid. If I buy something small myself I want a sporty manual car so that would rule out the corolla and yaris unless you get the GR.
This car is slower than my 1.4L 2009 Hyundai Getz to 100km/h
I like the looks of it, but it's bordering on being a dangerous car , especially when overtaking
you haven't tried keeping it in Sport mode 🤣. I mostly keep mine in that mode thanks to a Mod I did - CANBUS hat with SPDT switch
@stevenv2190 lol that won't change much
Hi, could you do a review on Haval H6/Jolion?
Love the look of this little SUV. Agree with Adam thay should put the Yaris GR motor & driveline into this and it would be a sales success. VIVA-LA-TOYOTA!
😂 Not at all.
SUV?
Too bad the US will never see the next-gen C-HR. There are videos for the 2024 C-HR - starting to like the GR. So many changes and upgrades.
Great job on the review
Smart looking cars .. and of course Toyota reliability !
Nippy?? No
I feel like she might have gone extra on the wet wipes during Covid 😂
Nippy no
0-100 is bordering on dangerous
Isnt it amazing how the Lamborghini urus looks plane Jane next to this. Its like the design teams met up one night and swapped designs.
Doesn't CHR stands for Coupe - High Rider?
Yes mate....saluti dall italia....most sold car here in Lombardy north Italy
Tried seat on the driver seat in one of these in a shopping mall. The blind spots are horrendous.😂
Clean GC8 in the workshop back there
Which might be for sale soon. - AK
Any CHR owner having water leaking through & to the underneath of the rear door ? I have been going back to the Toyota service centre multiple times and the problem still persist.
how many kms on that car?
almost 100k miles on mine!
We found it unrefined on NZ roads up against the Kona . And it is slow.
That's odd. I tested a Niro before getting the CHR, which is a bigger Kona, and in terms of refinement and noise the CHR is in a higher class
Please do a review on the Iveco Daily van please?
At least it's not confused like FJ Cruiser in design 😅
What? Where do you even connect those dots? Are you smoking crack in a Afghan takeaway in downtown Zimbabwe? What's wrong with you?
The windscreem guy told me that the rear windows is long wait to replace.
