I don't get how their marriage problems are solved by the end of the movie. He just says he'll try harder, and promises to not cheat. How does that change anything?
Well apparently you've never been married, sometimes fixing a problem in a marriage is complicated and sometimes it's simple. You could take the same situation that a couple is having in their marriage and depending upon the people both simple or complicated could work depending upon the people. Sometimes couples just need affirmation in their marriage. You might be surprised how easy it is for a marriage to become mundane over time. To the point where we almost forget that we are married to that person and supposed to be in a loving committed relationship. All it takes is a simple affirmation and a recommitment to that Union to begin the healing process.
When you have kids, sometimes one has to do big sacrifices for their sake. And sometimes those sacrifices entail repairing a broken relationship with your spouse. I've seen children whose parents got divorced at an age at which their worldview centered around their family was well cemented in their consciousness. And believe me, they didn't end up well.
