The old sailors used to say “Mares' tails and fish scales" - "Carry low sails". Horse tails and patchy cirrocumulus signal that a rain storm is on its way. the other one I rely on is "Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight" - "Red Sky in the Morning, Sailor take Warning". Or better yet use barometer as August suggested.
