In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're talking about Dune (1992, Cryo Interactive) - a very unconventional mix of strategy and adventure gameplay for MS-DOS, Amiga and Sega Mega CD based on Frank Herbert's Dune. It's the most faithful video game adaptation of the source material and, to me, one of the most fascinating adaptations of Dune ever made.

Dune always found its way into my Top 10 of Amiga games. It was released to good reviews but got never much recognition afterwards. Especially after DUNE II everyone either mocked or just dismissed it alltogether, which I found unfair. So thank you, thank you, thank you RagnarRox for making a beautiful review of this odd and nearly forgotten gem.

This was the ever first game I owned in a big box - because I was a lousy fucking kid not knowing how to value a gift from my father, sadly I don't have it anymore - but this game was my first favorite. It also introduced me into the world of Herbert and sci-fi and had a VERY long lasting effect on my thinking in general...once I replayed it a bit older, and read the books and saw the movies. Thank you for this. I might just replay it again this weekend.

This was one of my first and still most favorite games as a child, as well. I'd wake up early in the morning and sneak downstairs to our living room where we had our Tandy computer, and because the morning sun was so bright from the windows, I'd have to hide both myself and the computer screen under a blanket to play. Some of my best memories are from those times... and Dune is probably still my favorite book series today.

Instant Nostaliga; have many fond memories about that game. The graphics are still stunning and the game itself blew my mind when I was kid. Played it so much I could eventually speedrun it in 20 minutes.
Most adventure games are about solving object puzzles while the story is mostly linear, but Dune has no puzzles like that. Instead it's all about politics, building relations and gaining influence and military power through diplomacy and meticulous management of your loyalists.
So even though it has the structure and style of an adventure game it feels like you what you decide really matters to how the story progresses and the npc's aren't just static hint dispensers but people with their own agenda. That was an amazing achievement in 1992.

I loved this game soooo much, was playing with it on Amiga 1200 back in 1992. I have never managed to finish it, it was hard, and was still studying English, did not understand much of it, but loved the movie as a little kid, so I was playing with this game. It did not help much that on Amiga saving was ... rather tricky. But nevertheless, I loved it, the graphics for its time were pretty, and the music. Oh my God, that music.

Oh gosh, yes, dune 1... sweet memories.
I broke the game in quite a unique way in my first playthrough.
I don't remember the details, but I missed some crucial elements to progress the main story. So I developed my spice production and my army and, after a while, took over one Harkonnen fort after the other. At one point, only the Harkonnen capital of Arrakeen was left unconquered.
At that point, I finally managed to continue the main story, and Chani was captured. I was told to liberate her, I needed to find her first.
Not a single Harkonnen fort was left, so she was held captive in Arrakeen. When I rode there by worm I even saw here standing there, just before I was killed.
But the attack on Arrakeen was the culmination of the main story; it did not allow an attack on the capital out of order.
Whenever I tried to attack, I got a "you need to find Chani first before attacking the capital; otherwise, the Harkonnen will punish her" message.
The Harkonnen had no troops left, so they did not try to re-take the surrounding areas even when I left it devoid of any defenders.
So on my first playthrough, I conquered all of Arrakis, minus one place, and could not win the game.

'I am your father, and this is your mother.'
Paul receives this stunning revelation EVERY SINGLE DAY OF HIS LIFE.
In all seriousness though, this really leaves me disappointed in how little imagination goes into today's modern game design. I mean, studying ecology to bring Arakas's Mars-like wasteland back to lush green jungles? What a magical way to wordlessly unfold the player's stakes in the state of the planet! I only wish the game had taken it one step further, and made it so that your more dogged rivals try to burn your cultivated lands down to try to reset to the old status quo, and have to wage a huge skirmish as a result.

Kind of wished I could have gotten this to work in Dosbox. Getting an abandonware ISO is easy and legal. Whenever I try to follow Ragnar's guide though it never works. I drag the ISO onto the DOSbox shortcut. It mounts. I go to type in cd dunecd and it says it can't change it. Oh well, wanted to play it, can't.
Edit: Okay, I figured it out because I went to find a new ISO and it tells you how. Ragnar's guide is right, but if his way doesn't work try this ignore all quotation marks.
    Type: *D:* hit enter
    Type *dune*
That should start the game up and you'll confirm your settings. Then you'll probably have to launch it again.

I played this game at a very young age, without any knowledge of English which made it infinitely harder to play or even understand exactly /what/ was happening, but the visuals and the gameplay somehow were so striking that to this day, just seeing it invokes the most intense sense of nostalgia, especially since I haven't thought about this game in literal decades and this video is the first time I've seen it again in a long, long time - and yet it feels completely familiar, as if I last played it yesterday.
It's really fascinating to see how to actually play the game and to realize the immense detail that went in to it, all things that flew over my head when I was a kid that barely knew ten words in English.

This is still my favorite adaptation of Dune, as well. Played it so many times back in the day. Never tried pure ecological warfare against the enemy, so that has me wanting to boot it up again! One of the things I liked to do when I figured it out was remain outside of a capture base long enough for it to get turned into a Sietch. You can even do it with the Harkonnen headquarters at the end, and the final bits of dialogue play out in a cave instead of the fortress. It's pretty funny.

I am assuming from your accent that you are Swedish or at least Scandinavian (the user name helps in this assumption lol). The production quality is great in these videos and it is evidently very well thought out but also your command of the English language is really very impressive, you legitimately speak more eloquently than a lot of mother tongue speakers. This is real quality content, congrats!

I still remember today when exactly I played this game back in may 1993 on my good old Amiga 500. I didn't know much about Herbert universe at that time - I read the books only 2 years later during my chemical engineering studies, what a coincidence ^^ - but the music and the atmosphere of the whole aventure has left such a footprint. I was so excited to be able to win by ecological meanings, it was like discovering games in the games in the game... in a very appealing and subtile way. Yeah the game was a bit easy, especially compared to the Westwood one - I absolutely loved by the way - but not short. And for once it was a joy to be able to play in its original French version.
Love your video, awesome 25 minutes. Thank you!

My dad and uncles were obsessed with dune. I used to watch him play this game on the Amiga 500. The soundtrack is amazing. This game was mechanically inventive and unique. I specifically searched youtube to see if someone did a review on it. I don't know what to call this type of game design. It's such a mishmash or hybrid. I haven't really seen things like this anymore. Dune CD was the first game I had on CD-rom and the animation sequences were completely mindblowing to me. It was mezmerizing

Love the video! Just a small language tip: at 11:58 you talk about flying all the way around the planet and say "you'll surround the entire globe until you reappear from the east". Surround means to be on all sides simultaneously. A better word would be "circumnavigate" which means to go all the way around ;)

Man, you had the fancy CD-ROM edition. I owned it too but only the floppy disk version. It's the same game, minus full-motion video of flying around/scene transitions. And of course, it lacks the recorded audio of spoken dialog. The day/night cycle is still in the floppy version, though!
The game just oozed atmosphere and it's one of the reasons I really miss that sweet spot of early 90s PC/Amiga gaming. The audio/visuals were becoming really advanced (yet still retaining the stylized hand-drawn look of earlier, simpler graphics before it all became digitized/3D rendered CGI) and there was a lot of experimentation with game play and structure.
Also, still to this day: One of my favorite Dune soundtracks to listen to. Particularly the Adlib version for that extra flavor of nostalgia.

If you're truly looking for similar and endearing experiences that expertly mix adventure gameplay with strategy elements, you should look for Lost Eden. It's by the same guys that made this game, I think, but with an original story and made like, 3 years later. Much more polished and all. I fell in love with it when I was a kid and recently found out it's on Steam for around 10 bucks.

Thanks to the modern tools available in 2024, enlarged stereo field, clearer sounds and punchy dynamics, expanded spectrum with crispy high-pitched and mellow basses, makes the sound really better in comparison to the 1992 version. This version pulls you in a higher sound experience! Total 20 tracks!

There is 1 remake-ish. But it's for adults only. Sad part is the gameplay is minimal. Mostly just a visual novel with a very distinct art style.
I too wish for a proper remake. I could loose myself for hours in the oroginal, but there's only so much to do. And I've finished it multiple times over the years.
The adult one does take the story further and is very faithful to Dune. Fans can appreciate the love in it.
