- The reviews must flow! And the spicy subject here is the first computer game adaptation of Dune, made by Cryo Interactive and Virgin Games in 1992. Take control of Arrakis as Paul Muad'Dib Atreides, reclaiming spice mines from the evil Harkonnens and forming a Fremen army to dominate the planet! Early 90s MS-DOS game goodness.

I played this when I was probably 4 or 5 years old and got freaked out when I accidentally walked into the desert and died, that cutscene scarred me lol
Me too!!! 😂
that was me 🙋🏻♂️
i too was traumatised by this game as a child
important life lesson, don't walk into the desert, you can die
That's a life lesson for today too in real life@@monad_tcp
So, fun bit of trivia on regards to growing crops on Arrakis. If you have a sietch directly south of a Harkonnen stronghold and start growing crops (remember that vegetation always spreads North), you can make the Harkonnen just up and leave. They're only there to harvest Spice, and anywhere there's plants, there's no Spice. So you'll send troops to the stronghold, and the Harkonnens will have abandoned it.
Dang, 30 years of playing this game and I didn't figure that out.. not that it really matters, I usually have a bunch of pretty kick-ass fighters before that strat becomes viable, but this does give me an excuse to replay the game..
Ohhh yeaaaaaaa. I haven’t thought of that in 20 years. Thanks for the memory
Spice?
@@louistournas120the spice melange
@@almenajamband9206 It sounds like something I heard on South Park. There was an episode where Kyle's mom and others went to a football players house and they want feces.
Ecology was actually tactically interesting.
Because the plants destroy spice reserves and always propagate north you can defeat the harkonens by starving them off resources.
All you need to do is cultivate plants directly to the south of their settlements. It also makes your fremen more effective because they're all loyal to you once you start terraforming.
I always used to use this method in the endgame as a kid. It changed the vibe of those last couple of hours of gameplay... but also I'll admit that 12 year old me liked roll playing as a teraforming hero who had more peaceful ways to shape the known universe.
huh, the fact it destroyed all spice just felt to me like I was shooting myself in the foot. I discarded it as a pointless waste of resources almost immediately.
LGR, thanks a LOT for including the link to the bandcamp download! of Dune Spice Opera 2024 remaster! Thank you also for understanding how Orni's DV's design are very close to the original Cryo's stuf...
I tried playing the game but had stuff to do. Those spice dreams with Chani were interesting.....
The music in this game has followed me through out my life, I've always gave find memories of what is the best soundtrack of any game ever
That soundtrack was an instabuy for me, after hearing about it thanks to this video. I'm listening to it right now!
Strange really how the music impacted me. I only played through the game once back in the 90's, so clearly I wasn't the biggest fan of it. But the music stayed in my mind. Years later I was glad to stumble upon the soundtrack on TH-cam and had been listening to it occasionally. Finding out that there is a recent remastered version, I'm very happy to support it.
Thank you, Stephane, for your incredible soundtrack
Right?
In the house I grew up, the family computer was in my bedroom. I would be asleep late at night, and awaken to the sounds of my Mother playing this game on our old AST Windows 3.1 PC. The music was unmistakable, and still to this day, I remember it. But, I also had a fair number of nightmares because of the game, because of those freaky looking Harkonens, who absolutely terrified me as a small child. Still... it was always funny to know my mother was obsessed with beating the game, and spent hours playing it, just like I am now when I play more modern games.
Is your mother single
Good memories.
I was always terrified by that death scene you get when you fail. One of few such scenes haunted me as a kid, together with the game over screen from Robinson's Requiem and that suicide animation from Isle of the Dead
You know that "Treehouse of Horrors" Simpsons episode where Mr Burns is the Head vampire and they stake him in the heart in his casket and he shrivels up and melts like wax?
Messed me up for years 😂
I wish I had tech savvy parents
6:45 "I'm your mother, Jessica."
Thanks for reminding me, mother. Now if only my father could present himself...
"I am your father, Luke... urhm.. i mean am Leto!"
Motherly care, making sure her boy is kept informed about reality while he's tripping out with spice.
To the father nothing.... lol
6:00 "I am the Duke Leto Atreides, your father."
@@mrlescure Well, "What ?" is obviously the correct answer, he doesnt remotely look like Oscar Isaac so I´d be confused as well!
I remember my father handing me the novels when I got stuck playing the game when I was about ten. I loved everything about this game, but what stayed with me to this day is the music. And Chani's eyes...
"it's no popcorn bucket but it'll dooooo" - please don't have sex with the videogame box

Well it's made by Virgin Games... they know what they are doing.
No sex with box, but dry humping is ok
I talked recently with Stephane Picq. According to IMDB there is a short easteregg in the new Dune movie. Gurney Hallek plays a short melody thats the Intro music to old Dune game.
Stephane was unsure if its exactly HIS music, but I think its at least very close. Would be a nice reference by Villeuneuve
So it might be "Not Even Dune Music"
He is a fricken genius. This is still one of my all time favorite video game soundtracks to this day.
I just quickly skimmed through the movie, I didn't see Gurney ever play an instrument. There was an instrument beside his bunk tho. (Is the melody in Part 2, perhaps?)
It is.@@Kumimono
ha I thought it sounded familiar! Will have to keep an ear out in my second watch
Microsoft Flight Simulator added the Ornithopter as a free addon a couple weeks ago. Also includes some flight challenges on Arrakis.
It's really fun to fly.
My only complaint is that it's not an accurate simulation of what it was like for me to fly one of those things when I was in the military.
Absolute classic. I was fortunate to be be blessed with this game as a pack-in title of a multimedia CD-ROM upgrade set back in the early 90's. For those who didn't grow up in that time. It was when CD-ROM drives were starting to become mainstream for PCs and manufacturers packed in a bunch of games and other software to sell the drives. The particular pack my Dad bought had Dune, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and Stellar 7. There was also an edutainment CD about the NASA space shuttle but I don't remember much about it.
Funny seeing the characters winking at you to hint at what you should be doing.
There have been a small and vocal number of us who have been championing Cryo's masterpiece over the decades. It did RTS before Dune 2. It's a real-time adventure game that's fully-voiced. It had an open world with a day/night cycle and recruitable companions. It was absolutely marvellous both from a technical and gameplay perspective. And it deviated from the original book AND the film of the same name!
I wouldn’t exactly call Cryo’s Dune RTS, but more something like BTS (background time strategy).
I definitely liked the game (though I was already a fan of the book, sooo…), but it always felt more like an adventure/RPG with some strategy game elements. But that very mix is what makes it fairly unique. I remember mainly being worried about its replay value, though.
Lawnie!
I’m trying to remember if I payed this or Star Control 2 first but the idea that your character could have a romance was a big deal to young me
The two games were actually developed simultaneously, but yeah ;)
Definitely ambitious!
I've played Dune 2000 so much that I forgot House Ordos isn't actually a thing in canon
So that apparently means it"s very good? I've been planning/meaning to play that for years. I assume you could hint how it compares to Command & Conquer so-to-say mechanically. I like Dune 2 but it felt too dated to control when I first encountered it. I'd assume 2000 is close to C&C?
@@jothain Yeah, 2000 is a much better game imo. Better controls, better graphics (obviously), better music and much closer to the C&C games that we know and love. Definitely give it a whirl
@@rare437 Thanks. Looks like I gotta go browse GOG if it's available... Or the sites if nothing else.
@@jothain I really love Dune II. But it does suffer from early RTS pacing and difficulty curve issues. It's absolutely maddening to start building something, and see this group of enemies tediously marching like red ants toward your base or vehicles, and know that it's going to be a 3 minute wait before your defenses can inch... or more like centimeter their way over to them.
@@nickwallette6201 to biggest issue was simply the UI. Moving everything invidually was too much pain. But it was very late time when I got to play it myself. I did like it first time seeing it at friend. But it was like years later until I got computer good enough to play it.
"We're doing spice mining"
If you ever played it, you just heard that in your head in the original voice.
Had no idea about the OST remaster! One of my all-time favourite soundtracks. Stephane Picq is an outrageously good composer.
Thanks a lot! Next release: Lost Eden Remaster. Soon 🎲🌞

That bit made me have to pause the video fucking lmao
I had this game as a christmas present in 1992 and we didn't have a soundcard in our 386 dx40 yet. I just remember how we waited for our dad to buy that soundcard and he did one year later. I just remember how I couldn't stop playing this game after we installed soundblaster pro into our pc. It still sounds amazing. And looks. I've also been a Dune fan ever since I first time played this game.
DX 40Mhz was our first PC too. I loved Dune 2.
@@mikakorhonen5715 I waited for dune 2 and when I finally had it, I realized it's completely different. I really liked it, but I was a bit disappointed cause it wasn't really a sequel. I still don't understand why they did that...
@@HyperHillBilly Dune is made by Cryo Interactive and Dune 2 is made by Westwood Studios. I liked RTS games and Dune 2 started that genre.
Why did it take an entire year to finally buy a soundcard?
@@jonbourgoin182I guess it's good to learn to wait for something that you want, the games worked without it AND the pc wasn't bought for gaming. So.
This game is the most optimized 256-color game I've ever experienced, it can run at full speed on a XT 8088 at 8mhz with MCGA graphics, VGA is not even needed. I had so much fun playing this on my old IBM PS/2 with those exact specs back in the days.
One of the most memorable games ever for me: still play it every now and then. The music is unforgettable: masterpiece.
IMO: One of the greatest games of all time. Your praise and criticisms are spot on, but I've been playing it at least once a year since release. Those first notes in the throne room every new game hook me every time.
I'm impressed the by the mouth animations while characters speak. Seemed to me like the Xbox 360 era is when games began expressing an ability to consistently do this.
Final Fantasy X had lip syncing for the Japanese version, but they didn't put much into adjusting it for the English version so it almost got it right on PS2😅
Nah, that's been around in live 3d longer too. One example being Outcast from 1999. Open world, water physics you can swim in, and a jetpack.
Edit: also it has a remake coming this spring 2024.
That first edition copy of the Dune book is in stunning condition.
Yeah man has a game collection but also a rare first edition dune that's badass
My favourite part of this game is the demented voice acting. You'll meet a Fremen who'll scream in your ear "COULD HE BE THE ONE!?" And then whisper in sweet ASMR tones: "... The Voice from the Outer World..."
My favorite is when they’re out of things to say and go “Uhh.”
@@huntz0r from the 1984 movie, "I will take the man-child (weird grunt)."

Lovely Feyd! LOL
I adore this game.
It was the first full CD game we bought for our brand new PC in 1994. It introduced me to the Dune universe which I’ve loved ever since.
Thanks for the great video Clint.
This game was hard, unfocused and clunky... and I LOVED it.
Just like the sprawling novel it was based on, sorta fits!
I had no idea how to play it as a kid, but I loved just walking around and looking at the visuals
Back when strategy game was not even a glimpse in Westwoods eye...
Agreed. This game was an underrated and overlooked gem.
It was a very experimental game that didn’t really fit any molds.
I miss the times I could just go into a store and randomly come across a gem like this.
Dude, this is crazy awesome! I have the European version and didn’t even know it! So, my Dad got me into this franchise, and growing up in Chicago, there was a big store right outside the city he’d always visit called “ELEK-TEK”. No voices, different title screen and opening animations, and didn’t have the McLaughlin cover on it. My Dad bought it from that store without ever leaving the country.
A modern Dune RPG would be awesome.
They should make a Dune RTS.
Patrick Stewart + Battlepug = Pure Win!
Didn't know that Star Trek played 20000 years in the future. 🤔
Its a shame that we didn't see Ser Pugsley in the new Dune movies. He extends happiness, he is vital to the series!
I thought you said Patrick Stewart + Buttplug = Pure Win!

This is one of the game with the "thickest atmosphere" ever, I replay it every few years just to enjoy the feeling of it
I'll admit I missed your Simcity review, but when I saw this I was like, HELL YEAH, LGR IS BACK ON THE MEAT AND POTATOES RETROSPECTIVES
And it was anything but a Lazy Game Review. Top notch coverage.
Right!
It was the first game I’ve seen in vga. They did incredible job with only 256 colors. Getting out of palace and watching sunset was something out of this world
this is the game that got me interested in the world of Dune. Always loved everything about it. The soundtrack CD release is amazing, gameplay, art...
These two Dune games started my fascination with Dune. I’m now off to see Dune Part Two for the 500th time! 🤣
Those dialogues ... "I'm your mother, Jessica". No shit, mom.
"My name isn't Jessica!"
Get it?
pc game packaging used to be so cool, I remember going to compUSA in the late 90s as a kid and looking at all of the cool boxes
Completely agree on the ornithopter design, my younger self discovered them in the game(s) and the visuals from the latest movies just fits
This is absolutely one of my favourite games of all time! The soundtrack by Stephane Picq, the "French touch", beautiful palette blends. Mad to see Herbert, Lynch and Cryo mashed together in a strategy adventure epic. Timeless stuff.
He got the rights back this year and re-released his remastered version of Spice Opera on Bandcamp!
@@RaptorShadowfor real? I love that soundtrack and listen to it at least once a month, but I never bought an official copy. Heading over there right away! Edit: just got to the part in the video where LGR talks about it😊
Absolutely loved this, so unique and atmospheric. Couldn't get on with the command and conquer inspiring follow on. A different class
The story in this feels like a "what if house Atreides hadn't immediately been betrayed and could have proceeded with their original plans" kind of thing.
When I played this back then, I was always pissed that Leto didn't leave some airplanes behind for me.
That joke about Sting's voice was masterfully done.
I remember this game! While the sequel holds a place in my heart, this game has gotten me into the Dune universe established in the David Lynch film, on both the DOS and Sega CD versions. I also loved the Dune Theme, as well.
I have never seen that moving worm box art - that was cool
Haha, the inclusion of that little sliver of "Hell March" was a nice touch. Thanks for the great video as usual, Clint! I was much more familiar with Dune II than its adventure counterpart.
I had the Dune II RTS randomly on my computer, geeky uncle must have put it on there for us, and it was a blast. Didn't even know there was a Dune I game for DOS. I bet I would have loved it too.
I remember playing this game when i was 12 or 13 on an old Samsung laptop, it has been probably one of my favorite strategy games since then
This may have been my first computer cdrom game. I remember playing it alot only to get confused or frustrated. One day I sat down determined to play it for real. Other than NES games I feel like this was one of the first games I ever beat. The feeling of accomplishment and awe of what a superb game it was has put this game at the forefront of my video gaming memory. This was a nostalgia blast from the past. Thank you!
The floppy version was better than the CD in one way. The terrain changed when you started to terraform up the world. Much better than the repeating FMV loop. Thanks for sharing this classic masterpiece LGR!
Dude is one of absolutely best games I've ever played. I'd be happy to see modern remake. Never seen such blend of different genres in any other game.
One piece of music from this game was used as background music for Spiderweb Software's Exile 2 (later remade as Avernum 2).
I'm glad you included bringing in Feyd and Rabban for your video. Thanks
My memory of this game is that after a ton of trial and error I suddenly beat it as a 80s/90s kid and I had no clue how exactly. I had no idea what I was doing lol, I just kept talking to a lot of people. This game was so weird.
Man i miss buying games this way. I still remember the feeling of coming home and unboxing a game, it was so much more than just "a" game, it was a whole experience and sitting down playing with friends. Man, those were the days.
01:55 Hey, glad to see you've got a copy of Frank Herbert's computer book there...
You're a great man Clint. Loved this on my old 486 back in the day. Though im a massive Dune fan. That CD-Rom version went under my radar!
Played this game a bunch as a kid, long before I knew anything about Dune and the atmosphere of the game sucked me right in. Later on I read the book and got hooked all over again.
This game has a unique atmosphere and audio design and I love it.
I love Stephane Picq's soundtrack for this game so much, it introduced me to his music (okay to be specific, a midi of the Dune Morning theme I stumbled upon at random in 1998 introduced me to his music XD) and I've been obsessed ever since.
Played this game on the Amiga .. Love it to this day. The soundtrack is fantastic, the Grafics are beautyfull to this day - the pallet playing with sunsets and rises is neat, flying blind with a thopter over the planet, discovering unkown Sietches - i played the hell out of this one!
Hope you'll like the remastered Hi-res Audio verrsion, then!
Thanks for helping me to relive this game all these years later. Flying around could be challenging, searching for all those seitches, sometimes flying right past them and having to turn back to try again.
This video is my first ever exposition to Dune. The only thing I knew about this was the recent movies. The existence of them, as I haven’t seen them.
I just want to take a moment to say how much I love seeing videos like this from the channel. Just classic DOS games that are weird and cool and fun. It always feels like you have a good time making these ones and they're always a treat to watch. So, thank you for all your hard work and I hope you have an awesome day!

I loved Dune II and Westwood Studios (Command & Conquer, Red Alert), but never knew about this one being a more adventure/role play rather than RTS. Great summary!
It's great to hear someone else who likes the old movie! I adore the new films, ofcourse and the book is great. But the old movie has something that makes me hope more people goes back to it now after the newer films. I've never played this version of the game, but I do have Dune 2000 on ps1.
Randomly found the CD version of Dune at weekend markets back in its release year and grabbed it without having seen any reviews or coverage - such an awesome game to walk into blind! No idea why they made Gurney a bit of an oddball but I had good times dragging him around the planet. 😄
Oh my goodness I'm so excited to see this video. My first RTS was Dune for Sega Genesis (which was a port of Dune II). It's stuck with me all these years and I'll often replay it. I finally read Dune this year and of course love the movies. Thank you for doing this retrospective!
I remember reading somewhere, from Mr. Picq himself that he had to wait ~ 30 years for his contract with Virgin to expire to be able to re-release Spice Opera Soundtrack, probably the reason why it took a lot longer to get a digital release and a remaster...
I still listen the OPL track everyday, amazing work done by the composer!
It was foretold that the Lissan al Gaib will use a AdLib Gold card...
Im so jealous at your copies of this game! Unable to find these anywhere in good shape for years in Europe. Good stuff Clint! Love the channel

One of my first computer game experiences when I was a teenager! Mysterious because of it's unconventional gameplay, and absolutely beautiful for it's time (I played it recently and still am marvelled by the change from day to night and vice versa). Inspired me to read all Dune books (by Frank Herbert). Also, what a legendary sound track! Totally agree with your review!

Gee thank you so much !! Had no idea Stephane Picq did a new remaster !! Just wishlisted it and will soon buy it !
Man, I haven't seen one of your videos in forever. I'm glad this popped up for me.
Best game soundtrack ever.
I need to re-visit and finish this, myself. Despite loving the novel, the 1984 movie (more so when I was younger) and Dune II, I never got very far in this game, probably because I didn't realize what I was supposed to do. Still, I have strong memories of it, especially being blown away by the CD-ROM cutscenes. Thanks for the retrospective. I'd love to eventually see one for Dune II.
love your retrospective. 30 years ago, i was spending weeks playing this game, even created a detailed walkthrough. got completely fascinated and captured by Dune world, characters, spice, the planet, and especially the music. What CRYO did is a masterpiece. and whole game (diskette version) took only 1.6MBs. also the visual effects, transitions, 256 VGA color palette shifts were amazing, this game was like anything else before. still listening to those soundtracks from time to time. and 2024 remaster, what a nice surprise.

Loved seeing you pull the different versions of the game off the shelf, it's like I'm there with you checking out classic games.
Amazing how many games I've forgotten until you show a few minutes of gameplay. I must have had the CD-Rom version because I remember the voice acting.
The rotting away corpse death animation that played whenever the player died haunted my childhood, especially as I was too young to know what I was supposed to do so would usually just fly around until I died in the desert.
Always good to see people talking about this game, my first introduction to Dune. I've seen so so many articles over the past 30 years (and several this week) saying "the Dune games have a long legacy, going all the way back to the original game, Dune II". So few people seem to even remember that there was a Dune I.
I found these games in the late 90s when I was a preteen. I wasn't quite old enough to fully appreciate the books, or even the Lynch film, so these games were actually my introduction to a universe that I'm now deeply obsessed with as an adult. I watched the film soon after, which was an unfolding inspirational journey as I continued to get more out of it with every viewing. In high school, I was ecstatic to finally borrow the book from my school library. Since then I've made it a mission to digest as much Dune lore as possible, and Brian Herbert has made that a daunting but highly enjoyable challenge. Great video, thanks for sharing!
It might be time to go back and re-watch allllll of LGRs actual game reviews now...
those character sprites are SO GOOD, especially Jessica and that guy at 10:31

The new movie universe lacks the mystique of the Lynchian Dune-universe. This game looks surprisingly timeless!
The old Dune movie is so awesome, glad you're a fan of it too.
I mostly prefer it's bizarre atmosphere as well as set and costume design in comparison to the new version (which is still a better movie overall, imo).
I couldn't get into the new version, it's wasn't freaky enough for me
The new movies are amazing but I LOVE the David Lynch one. I thought the navigator arriving in that weird tank, leaving pools of oil on the floor, being pointlessly swept by those strange dudes was so bizarre and original!!
Look. Into. Jodorowski's attempt to make that film. He brought the artists that produced the inspiration of Lynch's movie...
The spicedriver edit is the best one.

And some sort of video disk too ?? :)David Lynch's Dune is an absolute masterpiece... Dune 2024's ending is just carp in comparison.
Oh man that travel music has taken me back 30 years.
Oh and If I remember correctly, the terraforming was a major boost to the fremen morale at the end of the game. When the area was completely harvested of Spice, it was essentially dead territory. But it could be assigned to plant vegetation, providing morale bonus to the WHOLE planet. The fremen were just accepting to fight for me immediately after I arrived at their door. That FMV through the "screen door" really killed my eye!
This is the kind of thing that seems most jarring about old games now. There was such a push to include FMV, but there were still gulfs between live captured video and rendered or animated cutscenes and gameplay. It didn't matter _as much_ back then, when we were just excited to see any multimedia. But now, it seems awfully disjointed.
How could let the fmv scar your 4k eyes?!
That was done to keep the playback as smooth as possible. It's unfortunate but back then we didn't exactly have GPU's. We had video cards, yes, but not GPU's.
I don't see any problem with that personally haha, granted i'm watching on a smartphone so maybe the small screen does it? Anyway I find that looking amazing lol
