It's so true, they don't prepare patients for anything that requires major painkillers. I think you're courageous to share your experience. Thanks

I wish I would have watched this pre-op instead of post-op. I am a amazed at how the medical field completely blows off the pain you will be going through and how little they do about trying to lessen it for you. I just had my surgery on Wednesday and they said I could go back to work Saturday. I could barely stand let alone work feeling better today (Sunday) after lots of fiber and stool softeners. Thanks for posting this and anyone who sees this please take it seriously ....

I know I'm three years too late. My surgeon pushed around before even the surgery date and flat out told me I can go back to work in three weeks after my surgery on light duty. Told her I have to lift 50+ lbs at work if I can't lift 50 lbs at work won't let me work because I'm a liability. She just stood their in silence looking at me before asking.
      "What do you do?"
I work in a warehouse. I don't have a desk job or a cashier. I work in the back with the rest of the guys pulling 80 lbs one-handed. It was a position that paid more and I jumped on board because I'm a 5' 10 woman in my work shoes who's husky from having grew up on a farm.
Just blew her mind away that I could do that type of work. Hence forth why I got the hernia.
So she switched up her story to. "We'll see when that time comes."
Called worked giving them the heads up and saying she automatically was going to put me on light duty after three weeks and was flat out told.
"You can't come to work only three weeks after surgery. You'll hurt yourself."
      Thank you!
Work gets it but not surgeon. So more than likely I'll be going three weeks without pay because my surgeon may not sign my disability papers to extend my leave from work.
Tip* Paying for short term disability doesn't work if you don't have a good enough doctor that will let you use it when work says you can't work and even the doctor says you can't do all that work.

Actually, it’s normal to have the first bowel movement 1-10 days after hernia surgery. Saying 2 days without one is much too long is actually false and most likely causing someone unnecessary stress. I had my first bowel movement after 5 days and I wasn’t in any pain. They tell you to eat fibrous foods, and to eat mostly a liquid diet. Idk what kind of doctors you had to not tell you such simple information. Also you want to take a stool softener every day and that will help.

Today is Day 6 after inguinal hernia repair. I wish I had known about the constipation issues. It was 3 days before I had a bowel movement. I did find out what Paradoxical Diarrhea is. The stool softeners, laxatives and plenty of fluids helped eventually. I wish I started taking them earlier. Sitting in front of the fire waiting for the next storm to pass. It's a dreich night outside. Greetings from Fochabers, Moray Firth, North East Scotland and Happy Burns night for Thursday. 😊

Thanks for having the balls to post something so embarrassing. That must've taken great courage. I think I'll make a few videos about my condition, pre-op, and a couple post-op. And sprinkle plenty of before/after shots so others can compare notes. I'm 95% convinced the medical establishment doesn't want you to know all the dirty ins and outs associated with surgery or many customers would be too damn afraid to go through these procedures. I heard the pain factor will be over the top for we patients but I had no idea the very pain meds they administer can could so much added discomfort. Thanks a million, Chris. FYI: This will be my third hernia operation to date. 2 were inguinal and this one is umbilical.

I've been in the ER twice now with impacted bowels .. very scary and painful, and now my doctor says I have a possible hernia from chronic constipation and bowel movement straining. I'm just waiting for my general surgeon referal to come in the mail to get the official disgnosis. I'm glad I ran into this video before hand, and will definately bring it up to the surgeon pre-op to get as prepared as I can. Also I've used fleet enemas myself by just sitting on the toilet, administering it, then going immediately to the bed and lying there knee to chest for about 10 minutes. God have mercy on all us hernia and constipation sufferers.

    • @lgalina997

Straining on the throne due to constipation can also cause hiatal hernia, a rupture of the normally-closed valve located at the diaphragm where the top of the stomach meets the bottom of the esophagus. Afterwards that valve remains open all the time, allowing undigested stomach contents to roll up toward the throat when you lie back (as in "GERD" aka "acid reflux"). Over night, acidic air has access to the enamel on your teeth. Toothe enanme is irreplaceable. The typical remedy for acid reflux, from the naive establishment medical community, is antacids (e.g. Tums), a whole aisle of which are available at any drug store. So actually, the acid reflux is due to the open valve, not due to excess stomach acid, so neutralizing what little stomach acid you have with an antacid is exactly the wrong thing to do. Instead, supplement with vegan digestive enzymes available at the same drug stores to aid the hydrochloric acid in completing the digestive process and stop eating several hours before going to bed.

Just a note. I'm not big on enemas, though I will use them if desperate enough. I personally keep Fleet suppositories in the house at all times. They can be used from the sitting position on the toilet and while not unnoticeable, they aren't as uncomfortable to hold in as an enema. Allowing body temp to melt them 15-30 minutes before going is best. If you are impacted you need the enema, but if "normal" level of constipation, the suppositories soften the stool and lubricate for easy passage without straining. Straining can and does cause hernias. Good luck to all needing the advice here.

I used Docusol from Rite Aid. I bought the mini enemas before leaving for surgery and ended up needing them, My bowels shut down on the flight to Ft Meyers for surgery and stayed that way until day 2 post op... so 4 days. They work. I did a second one too, before things started moving again.
Reporting back on Desarda Mesh-free Inguinal Hernia repair; It was great, so glad I did my research.
Surgery was local anesthesia, happy to miss general anesthesia. No narcotics after, only Motrin and an analgesic.
It was like the lights ent out and the next thing I knew they asked me to roll off the table into the wheelchair.
Pain level 1-2 except getting in & out of bed was 5-6.
I was normal gate in a month. Had to be careful with stairs because I had bilateral inguinal repair, one direct and one indirect, plus my abdominal wall was discovered to be blown out and he sewed that up too. Desarda method may leave you more vulnerable longer than mesh but there's 0% ongoing/chronic pain. No foreign body sensation and no complications from mesh.
I flew across country to Dr Tomas in Ft Meyers, FL and it was well worth it. Ufirst Health is his clinic and they have a good deal with a Marriot who shuttles patients to & from all 3 appointments. They have a protein smoothie for you when you get back from surgery. The rooms are Accessible rooms so getting in the shower was easy. Sleeping on the couch eliminated the pain of getting in/out of the tall beds.

I was fortunate because I did the pain meds for 1 day only. I had a different complication because I received a foley cath (why, I don't know) . 95% of these surgeries are foley-free, but I guess I was “lucky”. I returned later in the day presenting with urinary retention. I had too much fluid in my bladder to measure with the sonogram. So the one bit that I'd contribute on this matter is to make certain you won't get a foley unless absolutely necessary.
And what he mentioned is true also… which is why I did 1 day of pain meds.

Had surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital two weeks this Thursday. I had little pain after operation and needed no meds. Operated on at 9:30 walked out to parking lot well over a hundred yards at 2 p.m. with no problem.
Some discomfort. They gave me a percocet as I walked. Out.
Had coughing and sneezing that caused little discomfort in the lower abdomen .
I iced down for two days the first nite with a huge water chest ice pack, Had no swelling.
Having the best docs has to be part of it. Was in the fifth day back to my normal schedule. Told to rest a lot first 4 days.
Only problem is with fatigue. Doc said that would continue for 4 weeks and get better every day.
Saw doc on l0th day. Doc said things looked great. No heavy lifting till after 4th week. At this point can do lite weights, exercise, bike riding and stop if it starts to pain.
I guess I have been lucky. Ate raisin bran every day that helps with the flow of things. Had no constipation
and not problem going to bathroom. At lite for 4 days but a couple chicken cutlets.
Orderly told me to expect some belching and gas from the air trapped inside my stomach. Did not have laproscopic. Wasn't the largest hernia but by the time of the op it was one inch wide and one inch high
which had doubled in size in two weeks when the surgery was planned.
I just want the fatigue to go away, but have been active walking almost 3 miles every day after the fourth day.
Had no bloating whatsoever so maybe the huge ice pack helped that. In fact, my stomach was immediately smaller after the surgery and lost two pounds right after getting home.

I am 5 days post hernia surgery, thankgod the pharmacist gave me the advice to take stool softeners on release. Went to the chemist and bought some. Finally had a bowel movement this morning but was passing gas for last three days. Best advice you will get, the pain medication will constipate you otherwise.

A tip from a life-long IBS sufferer. If you have ANY GI related procedure, you’re safest and easiest method of regaining proper function of your intestines is a gentle, liquid diet leading into system tolerable foods until you’re back to “normal.” If on pain meds, avoid cheese or other constipation inducing foods. Take 1 regular dose of Miralax in proportion to the amount of food intake. Drink LOTS of water & Gatorade as the excess fluids helps the Miralax work to “flush” your system in a more gentle way. Hope you’re better soon.

Very true. I had epighernia hernia (above belly button ) . Went to National institute of health to have repaired. The surgeons "fellows" ( those studying under him) insisted that it was not necessary.
OmG ....i agrued. They insisted it was not needed.
HUGH mistake. My surgeon had to open me up to perform life saving surgery. He had to cut my bowel resection the resection he did a year prior.
I was constipated before surgery and after I insisted NO pain meds.
It took several days post op to have tiny Bowel movement. Over a week to finally get cleansed. Took 2 enema , lot of water, walking ,miralix, senna and stool softener. ALL because a cleanse was not done prior to surgery.
Lesson learned. Because I was not feeling well and tired I caved and said ok.
Please......make sure you get cleanse before surgery.
Make sure you do not eat any foods that constipate you for at least 3 months post op.
I eat high protein yogurt. Half my body weight in water each day.
Lot of low starch low carb food.
I limit meat or fish to 4 ounces .

For my post-hernia, on the 2nd day I tossed my opioid painkiller and started taking CBD oil instead. Comparable level of painkiller effect, minus the constipation risk. Possible side effect I should mention, tv shows seemed a little better and cheezies tasked super good.

But did take a shower and the little red pills to soften things up are working just fine. Today its 3 days since the knife and feel much better. Just taking things slow but have some "bruising" around that area, but then again when I bump into anything always get a bruise...its a age thing...Also will NEVER take them pain pills again...period!

Second surgery, so I knew how bad this part is. Painful as each gas/air bubble has to slowly work it's way thru your system. Currently Day 4 in the recovery from robo inguinal. When it's time to "go", do a bit of walking around to get your body's internal movement going. It helps to prop your feet up a few inches on something, and read something obscure to help take your mind off the anxiety/pain of having/trying to go. And usually, the cork will blow soon after.

46 year old female, had an incision repair for an inguinal hernia 5 days ago. Very little pain post surgery, slightly tender and very swollen but for anyone worrying too much, I’ve barely had any pain and paracetamol and ibuprofen for a couple of days post surgery held aching at bay. The only annoyance I can feel a pulling but think that’s more to do with swelling. As a comparison to it feeling like this poor chap was going to have a baby, I have delivered an 8 pounder on my bathroom floor with no pain relief and honestly they’re very different feelings 😂. Hope anyone worrying about relentless pain is assured that this isn’t always the case.

The healing time predicted was right on, I didn't beat the initial healing timeline but now 42 days out I can climb ladders at times for work. Incision healed w/o infection. I held both sides, sutures and superficial inguinal opening areas when I coughed or sneezed - with hands not pillow.
I took longer to poop that estimated but bought mini enemas at Riteaid, Docusol I think. It kickstarted things and glad I took another guys advice there.
Dr Tomas is a skilled machine, I think. I was at ease going in, surprisingly. I was put to sleep under local anesthesia. I felt nothing. The pain level was a 1-2 except for laying down.
For pain they provided Motrin and an analgesic, gabapentin - no narcotics gratefully!
I have had sensation feelings "pain" that changed as healing progressed. Now internal on right side. Sutured on incision dissolved from what I see. Internal sutures will dissolve by 7 months. Then I'll lift for hypertrophy again.

Hi - thanks for your advice. I was so concerned about having that bloated, painful feeling that I stuck to liquids a day-and-a-half before surgery and water only the day of. It`s now three days after surgery and no bloating and no hunger. Just clearing my throat once in a while really reminds you where they were digging around. Odd thing is that while some doctors suggest a diet of roughage, my doctors said to avoid fruit as it would cause gas - bloating - pain. They say it`s good if you walk around, chew gum to stimulate or reawaken your intestines - that from a medical center website. I still struggle with a way to get out of bed, but otherwise, even on day two, no pain, just soreness. By the way, in Belarus, where I live, the doctors require you to stay overnight in the hospital for monitoring for an inguinal hernia repair surgery. They said my company wouldn`t pay for that, and I was wondering how much it might cost as it was a private clinic. It cost me $37 for that hospital stay. That made my day. So the second day of pain never materialized. So far, so good.

@@slocad11 Thanks for the advice. My hernia surgery day is Feb 1st. Didnt think of being on liquid diet a full day before. I was only thinking the day after. I'll stock up the fridge with smoothies and yogurts. I won't eat any harder food the day before.
